As it celebrates its 75th anniversary, C.S. Lewis’ classic The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe leaps from page to stage in Bristol.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, C.S. Lewis’ magical tale, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe remains as wonderful and relevant today as it was in 1950. Leaping from page to stage, audiences in Bristol have a unique opportunity to lose themselves in Narnia, home to an array of enchanting characters many of which are brought to life with incredible puppetry.
Lewis’ enduring fantasy translates so beautifully into live action that it became a BBC TV classic in 1988 and was made into a film in 2005. Director Michael Fentiman, whose stage credits include Amelie and The Windsors: Endgame says, ‘In 200 years’ time, Lewis’ book will be like one of our Mystery Plays. The reason it’s a classic is that it has a sort of palpable mythicness that pulls from something older that we can understand subconsciously’.
The vivid and colourful production has a cast of 23 actors, musicians and dancers, including Katy Stephens as the White Witch and puppetry director, Toby Olié who began as a performing puppeteer in War Horse.
‘I moved from the back legs of Joey to the head,’ he laughs. He believes the joy with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the extent to which the puppets come embedded in the narrative. ‘They exist in the fabric of the story, as well as an extension or manifestation of it. They’re there to heighten the emotions as well as emphasise the theatricality: if the puppets came out of the story, the narrative wouldn’t be the same.’
Set in wartime Britain, the four Pevensie children are evacuated to a house where they tumble through a wardrobe and into the beautiful and strange world of Narnia. It’s a tale of escapism, wonder and adventure in an uncertain world.
Katy Stephens said, ‘Audiences won’t believe their eyes and ears! For two and a half hours, they’ll be completely transported. It’s a show that will captivate both adults and children alike. The level of talent on-stage is incredible. I’ve laughed, I’ve been moved, and I feel so privileged to be part of this production. I know the audience will feel the same way. It’s the most enchanting spectacle you could imagine.’
