NOT ALL PLAIN SAILING

A re-enactment of the real-life drama and comedy bubbling beneath the waves during filming of the iconic shark movie.

You know the tale. A giant shark attacks and kills swimmers off the shores of Amity Island. A community is plunged into terror. Can the local sheriff, a marine biologist and a local fisherman set aside their personal differences and catch the monster lurking beneath the waves? If you didn’t read Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel, then you’ll probably be familiar with the story thanks to Spielberg’s blockbuster film, now almost 50 years old.

As audiences across the world dove behind cinema seats and hid their eyes behind oversized cartons of popcorn, they could only imagine the fascinating true stories that inspired it. The Shark is Broken explores the real-life tensions between the main characters as they filmed from a tiny boat; the stressful physical conditions, their different personalities and styles and the mechanical shark’s constant malfunctions. Little did they know that these behind-the-scenes struggles ultimately contributed to the film’s success – and, as they surfaced, became a whole new story for audiences to dive into.

Co-written by Ian Shaw, whose father Robert Shaw played crabby fisherman ‘Quint’ in the film, and Joseph Nixon, The Shark Is Broken is a brilliantly funny celebration of movie history, based on the true story of how Steven Spielberg’s epic vision was brought to life – against the odds. With every passing take, it seemed as though luck wasn’t on anyone’s side;

the mechanical shark kept breaking down and so, very nearly, did the actors. As filming was delayed again and again, and foul weather set in, booze flowed as freely as the ocean waves. As a result, tensions between three male egos – Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider – tightened to almost breaking point. Maybe they needed a bigger boat? The Shark is Broken examines what happened when the cameras stopped rolling – and promises to be a treat for film historians and theatre-lovers alike. Following its critical and sell out success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the play transferred to the West End in 2021 where it enjoyed an extended run due to popular demand plus an Olivier Award nomination for Best Comedy Play, followed by a 16-week Broadway transfer in 2023. So, cast your net, sink into your seats and enjoy!

The Shark is Broken

A smash hit in the West End and on Broadway, The Shark is Broken celebrates movie history and peeks at the choppy waters behind Hollywood’s first blockbuster.

FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Filming is delayed… again. The lead actors – theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider – are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic… if it doesn’t sink them all.

Step aboard the Orca and into The Shark is Broken, a ‘profound dive behind the scenes of the making of Jaws’ (The Daily Telegraph). This Olivier Award-nominated new play is ‘hilariously brilliant and pure genius’ raves the Sunday Express and stars Ian Shaw (War Horse, Common) as his father, Robert Shaw

BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF

From BAFTA-winning TV to acclaimed stage production, this timeless story continues to be an anthem for the working class.

Boys from the Blackstuff took Britain by storm when it first aired on TV in 1982. Britain was in the grip of social unrest. Unemployment was at a record high, and workers’ unions were at war with the Thatcher government. Written by Alan Bleasdale, Boys from The Blackstuff was seen as a portrait of working-class culture during one of the country’s more unsettling transitions as heavy industry and the idea of a ‘job for life’ was losing momentum and the message from the top was to ‘get on your bike’.

In 2024, Boys from the Blackstuff is still a stark snapshot of reality. Everyone must make a living, pay the rent, provide for the family, but if the means to do that is taken away, what’s the alternative? One of the original TV characters, Yosser Hughes became an unlikely workingclass hero with his relentless mantra, ‘Gizza job – I can do that!’ Desperately grasping onto the hope of being given any menial task to support his kids.

James Graham has taken this powerful story from screen to stage, and it remains a critically-acclaimed portrayal of unemployment, social inequality and community resilience. Like the popular TV show, the play’s unique blend of humour and pain captures the essence of working-class life.

The play is a collaboration between two visionary writers, Alan Bleasdale, its creator and James Graham who worked with Alan on the stage adaptation. It was commissioned by the independent-minded Royal

Court Theatre Liverpool in conjunction with the National Theatre and the legendary Liverpudlian impresario, Bill Kenwright. There is something very fitting that this story – with which he had such a great personal connection – should be his last production. Bill and Alan Bleasdale first worked together over forty years ago, when Bill produced Alan’s musical play Are You Lonesome Tonight? The show was one of Bill’s first great successes. In an interview in 1991, Bleasdale said: ‘Other producers turned away in horror from Are You Lonesome Tonight? but Bill saw its potential… He’ll go further than anyone I know to make a show work.’

With sell out seasons in Liverpool, at the National Theatre and in the West End when Boys from the Blackstuff premiered, its enduring legacy as a play for all time was properly assured.

‘Gizza job. Go on, gizzit.’

80s Liverpool. Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie and Yosser are used to hard work and providing for their families. But there is no work and there is no money. What are they supposed to do? Work harder, work longer, buy cheaper, spend less? They just need a chance.

Life is tough, but the lads can play the game. Find jobs, avoid the ‘sniffers’ and see if you can have a laugh along the way.

Directed by Kate Wasserberg, James Graham’s criticallyacclaimed adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s groundbreaking television series, is coming to Brighton direct from the National Theatre and West End. When Professor Goodman embarks on an investigation of three apparent hauntings – as recounted by a night watchman, a teenage boy, and a businessman awaiting his first child – Goodman finds himself at the outer limits of rationality, and fast running out of explanations.

After exhilarating audiences for two years in the West End and across the world with record-breaking, sell out productions and a smash hit film, Ghost Stories is ‘Genuine scary fun’ (The Sunday Times), a worldwide phenomenon more spine-tingling and fantastically terrifying than ever.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button “THE BEST BRITISH MUSICAL IN DECADES” (WhatsOnStage) has blazed into the West End. This epic, intimate, and unforgettable hit “IS A MUSICAL TO TREASURE” (The Standard).

Based on the iconic short story by F Scott Fitzgerald and reimagined in a Cornish fishing village by award-winning writing team Jethro Compton and Darren Clark, this unique, actor-musician led story is “EPIC AND CINEMATIC WITH A TREMENDOUS SCORE” (Daily Mail). The 13-strong cast of actor-musicians playing 30 instruments perform “MIRACLES OF DEXTERITY ON STAGE” (The Times), bringing to life a heart-burstingly magical tale of a love that defies all odds.

Under the light of a full moon, something most curious occurs… Benjamin Button is born old. Bound to the fate of growing younger each day, Benjamin wants nothing more than to live a little life. But will he ever find a place to belong?

Now playing at London’s Ambassadors Theatre, don’t miss your chance to see this “SURE-FIRE WEST END HIT” (The i). You’ll love every second.
