How do you feel about directing the first-ever stage adaptation of the iconic detective, Inspector Morse?
I remember my parents really enjoying Morse on television when I was a child. I know how much the character is respected and loved by thousands of people so it’s a great honour to be able to create a stage production of Morse. This story has a brilliant plot; it’s a murder investigation which unfolds inside a theatre. There are many layers for Morse to fathom his way through. What is real and what is imaginary? The worlds of crime and drama become intertwined – it’s thrilling. Will there be similarities between the stage character of the detective, played by Tom Chambers, and the character in the longrunning TV series, played by John Thaw?
Yes! Tom and I have talked in detail about the character of Morse and how he’s going to portray him. I’ve worked with Tom before. Like John Thaw, Tom is also from the north of England, and is exactly the same age as John Thaw was when he played Morse.
Do you need to know anything about Inspector Morse before seeing the production?
No. Morse and his sidekick Lewis are classic detective characters, like Holmes and Watson; solving crimes to bring about justice and make the world a better place.
Crime and mystery stage plays are really popular at the moment – what do you think audiences will love most about the show? Unlike other crime fiction on-stage – where the audience might be aware of certain things ahead of the detective – in this play the audience discovers clues and facts at the same time as Morse does. The mystery, the suspense, the intrigue remains at fever pitch and the audience will find themselves inside Morse’s thought process as he works his way toward the truth.
Are the stage characters similar to how they appear in the novels by Colin Dexter?
Playwright Alma Cullen worked closely with Colin Dexter on the creation of these characters. and was one of the main writers of the television series. Dexter describes Morse as ‘Someone who can do a crossword in two minutes. He has a quickness and ability to come to an immediate conclusion – even if it’s the wrong one! He’s melancholy rather than morose; a quiet humour’. The stage characters Alma has written are as Dexter created them for his novels.
What do you enjoy the most about directing for stage? I love it. It’s an endless guessing game – every night, hundreds of complete strangers sitting in the dark – what will they think? Will they be scared? Will they laugh? What will they think about it?
All of these questions are in my head as I sculpt the storytelling on-stage. It’s a thrilling job and it has just as many twists and turns as a good crime fiction!

A chilling mystery unfolds when a young actress suddenly dies on-stage during a performance and Detective Chief Inspector Morse embarks on a gripping investigation.

What begins as a suspicious death inquiry takes a darker turn when the legendary inspector, together with DS Lewis, uncovers a connection to sinister events in his own past, 25 years earlier.
Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts marks the first ever stage adaptation of the iconic detective. ITV’s long-running Inspector Morse, hailed by Radio Times as ‘The greatest British crime series of all time’, has inspired equally beloved spin-offs, Lewis and Endeavour
Starring Tom Chambers (Father Brown, Strictly Come Dancing) as Inspector Morse, this original story written for the stage is a must-see for fans of compelling detective stories and thrilling mysteries.
