“Screamingly good fun!” – Variety

At last! A musical spectacular to die for!

Show your groups the time of their afterlives with the supernaturally hilarious hit musical BEETLEJUICE! The spectacular, three-time Broadway sensation is now haunting London’s Prince Edward Theatre – for a limited run only.

Meet your new best fiend – Olivier nominee David Fynn (School of Rock, BBC’s Daddy Issues) – as he unleashes mayhem in the iconic title role. Starring alongside him in a cast that’s out of this netherworld are Oliviernominated Tom Xander (Mean Girls) as alternate Beetlejuice and Hannah Nordberg (HBO’s Euphoria) making her West End debut as Lydia Deetz.

Based on Tim Burton’s beloved movie classic, this wildly funny — and weirdly life-affirming — musical tells the tale of Lydia Deetz, a strange and

Star interview!

We recently interviewed David Fynn who plays Beetlejuice. Read on to find out what he had to say…

What initially drew you to this show and character?

The direct addresses to the audience! Having a fun relationship with the audience is rare in a big musical, so that was very appealing. Also, the writing is excellent!

Which number has been the most challenging to rehearse, and why?

The Whole “Being Dead” Thing. You’re setting up so much story, plus the rules of the world, whilst trying to be funny and engaging. It’s a lot of plates to spin!

Is there a song that’s become a personal favourite in rehearsals?

That Beautiful Sound (Reprise) is so much fun!

What’s it like working with the creative team on this production? Amazing! They’re so patient, talented and unbelievably collaborative. That’s so rare.

Who’s been making everyone laugh the most behind the scenes? Richard Frame (Otho) is a comedy god and a king among men!

unusual teenager sharing her home with a pair of newly-deads and the demonic ghost with the most, Beetlejuice. He’s dead trouble, but if you really want to feel alive, just say his name three times…

With a gleefully irreverent book, head-spinning set design and a score that’s out of this world, BEETLEJUICE is a ‘jaw-dropping funhouse!’ (New York Times) and a ‘feast for the eyes and soul’ (Entertainment Weekly). Outrageous, but with a big (cold) heart, it’ll make you want to live – and make the most of every Day-O!

But act dead quick! BEETLEJUICE only appears until April 2027… so you better possess a ticket now.

How do you think British humour influences the tone of the show?

We’re adding our own bits, but the audience will tell us what works. How do you balance the comedy with the darker themes in the show? If you play them both genuinely then they look after each other. The amazing writers already did that work for us.

It is New Year’s Eve, 1942, and a skinny 27-yearold Italian-American singer is about to step onto the stage of New York City’s Paramount Theatre and give a performance that will change music history. But as Frank Sinatra’s voice captures a nation, his heart is torn between his wife, Nancy, and movie goddess, Ava Gardner. When scandal and a hostile press send his career into a tailspin, the young crooner fights back and stages the greatest comeback in show business history. Featuring over twenty classic hits, including “That’s Life“, “One For My Baby“, “The Best Is Yet to Come” and “I‘ve Got the World on a String“, SINATRA THE MUSICAL is the most revealing portrait ever told about the legendary singer.

Our most recent U3A Group Leaders Afternoon was held at OLIVER! at the Gielgud Theatre at the beginning of May

We were delighted to welcome a lovely mix of 16 new and experienced leaders from groups across the South-East. They had the opportunity to socialise and network before the show too. There’s no better way to find out about arranging a U3A theatre visit than meeting another group leaders! The afternoon included complimentary stalls tickets to enjoy the matinee performance of OLIVER!

Lionel Bart’s OLIVER! first premiered in London’s West End in 1960 and has remained one of the most loved and iconic musicals. This latest revival presented by Cameron Mackintosh with director and choreographer Matthew Bourne played at the Chichester Festival Theatre in summer 2024 and transferred to London’s Gielgud Theatre later that year.

The show remains faithful to the original memorable score and brings Dickens’ touching story of the orphaned Oliver Twist to life in a fresh and beautiful way. The Gielgud Theatre is a more intimate staging for this production compared to previous West End productions, but the specular effects including a revolving set and high bridge creatively takes us back into the world of Dickensian London. The Cast, including a troop of amazingly talented

and gifted children, overflow with joy as they lead us through this long-loved story with some of musical theatre’s favourites songs. There are three troops of children who rotate performances – the troops are aptly named Limehouse, Wapping & Bethnal Green. Our troop included Thomas Newman playing Oliver who, clearly adores performing, melted the audience’s heart. In addition to Oliver and his young friends, the star of the show was Fagin, played by Simon Lipkin. He cleverly brought fantastic humour, fun and love to the role. OLIVER! is the perfect show to uplift and entertain groups of all ages. You will be humming the wonderful score including “Food Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself” and “You’ve Got To Pick-a Pocket or Two” all the way home! For me, the secret ingredient to this joyous show is the closing scenes showing Oliver being reunited with his Grandfather and Fagin and The Artful Dodger bounding back to their life under the arches. Love and friendship remains the most powerful story in theatre!

Groups account handler Ross Finbow recently saw AVENUE Q Read on to find out what he thought…

When I first saw Avenue Q 20 years ago, I was very nervous. Our household is massive Muppets and Sesame Street fans, and I was apprehensive Avenue Q was going to ruin that for me. My nerves disappeared after the opening number. Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx had crafted a Broadway musical Mel Brooks style spoof. It was joyous, funny and even had lessons and morals to teach us. It just so happened to be on more adult themes. You would think the revival, currently showing at The Shaftesbury Theatre, would have me giddy and excited, wouldn’t you? That’s what I thought but boy was I nervous. A lot has changed in 20 years. Would the show be relevant, funny and as good as before or would it seem outdated, crass and not match my rose-tinted hopes?

I am beyond happy to report that it is still as amazing as it was 20 years ago. There are a few minor tweaks to update, the song Mix tape is now a Spotify playlist, Princeton’s jobs being replaced by AI and a certain American political

figure may have been mentioned but it remains, at it’s core, a funny, satirical modern musical that doffs it’s cap to its inspiration. It is still very much an adult show despite the puppets, but it retains the morality lessons through songs about racism, sexuality and the internet. It is a wonderful world in Avenue Q and in true classic Broadway style even those who live in the poor suburbs of New York the sun is still shining. The opening song brings us right into the heart of the fictional street where we meet all the lovely people/monsters of the neighbourhood. There is Nicky and Rod, a modern-day Bert and Ernie, Katie and Trekkie monster, Christmas Eve and her disappointing but lovable fiancé Brian. All there to welcome new guy Princeton as they share in the struggles of work, love, purpose and commitment

The score and songs are just as good and while the whole cast/puppeteers and monsters are brilliant a special mention must go to Emily Benjamin and Noah Harrison. At times on

stage, they are puppeteering one character while seamlessly singing as another. Think patting your head while rubbing your tummy. Insanely talented. Trust me, I should know. I did a ventriloquism course. The closing of Act one of with lovelorn Katie Monster, Emily Benjamin, singing There’s a Fine, Fine Line is a tremendous musical song, but Emily’s performance was captivating, subtle and elicited quite a few sympathetic aaaaawwwwsss. It brought gravitas to the wildness of the show and was a worthy showstopper. Quite the gear change from Trekkie monsters’ song that is for sure. I am very happy that it has returned and I am sure I will too, but it is for a limited time So? What are you waiting for? There is life outside your house and it is happening at Avenue Q Get your group together, get your tickets and get yourself to Avenue Q. I promise you that it will lift your mood, a spring in your step and restore your faith in people and monsters alike.

We recently interviewed Tristan Waterson who plays Gale in THE HUNGER GAMES: ON STAGE. Read on to find out what he had to say…

What was your first reaction when you heard The Hunger Games was being adapted for the stage?

My first reaction was that it would be something I would personally want to see, it’s a franchise I’ve grown up with. My big question was how are they going to adapt such an action heavy story for the stage!

The story is very action-heavy. What kind of physical training or rehearsal process did you go through?

The first week we did a bootcamp with Kev McCurdy our fight director and within the first 10 minutes we were using swords and learning how to fall on the floor safely - in at the deep end.

How does this production differ from the The Hunger Games that audiences already know?

It’s live! You can’t beat seeing the arena come to life in front of your very eyes. The set design is incredible - it shifts and transforms from district 12 to the cornucopia.

What elements of the story translate surprisingly well to theatre?

Hearing Katniss’ inner thoughts and monologues taken directly from the books - that wouldn’t work in other mediums.

How did you approach playing such an iconic character?

I’m so lucky to have such incredible source material. Suzanne Collins has written such a three-dimensional character in Gale so that was my starting point. Then from there I wanted to bring myself to him and once I started working with the brilliant Mia Carragher, who plays Katniss, it was so easy to find Gale and Katniss’ relationship.

What has been the most emotionally challenging moment for you to perform?

The reaping scene always hits home with the reality of the situation they’re in. Right before the scene I hear Katniss deliver the line ‘Gales name is on 42 slips’ - that always helps me to find it.

Why should someone who already knows the story come and see this version?

It’s brand new - you may know the story but you won’t believe the spectacle!

We caught up with Alexandra Burke to talk about the challenge, responsibility, and thrill of embodying one of music’s most iconic voices.

Alexandra, what drew you to the role of Chaka Khan? It’s one of those roles that feels almost destined. I grew up listening to Chaka—her voice, her power, her honesty. When I was approached about I’M EVERY WOMAN, I wasn’t sure they had the right person! She’s so legendary and iconic. This isn’t just a jukebox musical—it’s her life, her truth, her struggles and triumphs. That’s something I felt deeply would need a lot of care and attention. My audition for the show was meant to last 30 minutes, I was still in there 3 hours later! I wanted what they sent to the Queen herself to be the very best I could do. This show has been such a challenge, it’s taken me to places I didn’t know I could go.

Chaka Khan has such a distinctive voice. How do you approach performing her music?

You can’t imitate Chaka—you honour her. That was my biggest lesson early on. Songs like I’m Every Woman and Ain’t Nobody are part of music history, and audiences know every note. So for me, it’s about capturing her spirit, her soul, and the intention behind the lyrics, rather than trying to replicate her exactly. Nobody can do that, she is so unique. What is wonderful about this show is discovering incredible songs from her catalogue that I’d never heard before. One of my favourite songs is Disrespectful, which was a collaboration with Mary J Blige. What has been the biggest challenge in portraying her on stage?

The emotional journey. People know the hits, but they may not know everything she went through behind the scenes - and oh my goodness,

she’s been through so much. This show really explores everything. It’s intense at times—vocally, physically, emotionally. You’re carrying the legacy of someone who’s still very much alive and respected, so there’s a responsibility to get it right.

You’ve played iconic roles before. How does this compare?

This is on another level. When I played Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard, that was huge—but this feels even more personal because it’s a living legend’s own story being told right now. It’s a full-circle moment for me as a performer. On Chaka’s last visit to London she came to visit us during rehearsals and gave us all so much encouragement. She’s the most incredible person. What can audiences expect from I’M EVERY WOMAN? Everything—joy, heartbreak, empowerment. It’s not just a concert, though the music is incredible. It’s a story about resilience, about finding your voice, and about what it means to be a woman in this industry. It’s a hard industry to be in. And of course, you’ll hear those songs that defined generations and have a great time. Audiences so far have been dancing and singing down the street after the show!

Finally, what does it mean to you personally to take on this role?

It’s an honour. Truly. To stand on stage and tell Chaka Khan’s story—night after night—is something I’ll never take for granted. If audiences leave feeling inspired or empowered, then we’ve done our job.

Collectively, these illusionists have performed thousands of shows in hundreds of cities, including sell-out residencies on Broadway and across Australia, Asia and Las Vegas – leaving audiences spellbound and questioning the very limits of possibility.
