PROLOGUE Welcome to our “poetry project.” Robert Frost, an American poet quoted “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” Even
the Greek philosopher Plutarch
quoted “Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.” Taking advantage of our school lesson – talking about Shakespeare- and the upcoming celebration of World Poetry Day on March 21st, my students were asked to write a poem – a sonnet was what we were aiming for, but being quite difficult for first graders- we chose, of course, free verse.
For
some students the idea was enchanting, whereas for others, it was quite a challenge. Some students drew pictures- “ painting is silent
poetry” to express their ideas instead of writing down the words. For poetry’s sake, I have not tampered with my students’ work. Forgive us if we have violated the rules of grammar and orthography. Hope you enjoy their poems!
To my students , Classes A1/A4 and A2/A3, who used their imagination and the English language to amaze me!
