Greetings from Soror Carrie J. Clark

Great Lakes Regional Director Greetings Sorors, Happy New Year! I pray that your holidays were full of joy, happiness and time spent safely with close family and friends. We know that 2020 was a year filled with a multitude of challenges that impacted all of us. Many of us have endured the losses left by 2020 and the pandemic. Yet, I am so proud of the strength, resolve and steadfastness of you, my Great Lakes sorors. You continue to “rise up” like never before to find creative and imaginative ways to serve your communities and each other. Many of your activities are found in the pages of this issue of Great Lakes R.I.S.E. Now, we are already at the beginning of a brand-new year. We enter this year with hope and aspirations for great things to come. Of course, we will all celebrate Founders’ Day on January 15 with observances and Sisterly Relations activities, MLK Day and the Inauguration of Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President. In addition, plans are already underway for the Dr. Eva Lois Evans Leadership Institute later this month.

Also, we are excited about the 90th Great Lakes Regional Conference quickly approaching, April 15-18.

Great Lakes R.I.S.E. Up Great Lakesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Ivy Beyond the Wall COVID-19 continues to impact our sorors and families. Sadly, the Great Lakes Region has lost another soror. Soror Ambir Machelle Kirk became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on November 20, 2020. She was 27 years old, just shy of her 28th birthday in December. Soror Ambir was initiated in 2016 in Delta Zeta Chapter at Michigan State University. She leaves behind a very young son, loving parents and a host of line sisters, sorors, family members and friends. Please keep Soror Ambirâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, parents, sorors and all who loved her in your prayers.

Over 140 sorors spent their Sunday evening cooking along with Chef Alexa Joan Givens-Wajed who invited us into her home and showed us how to prepare roasted chicken, roasted brussel sprouts, cornbread dressing, homemade gravy and pink mimosas. Registered sorors received recipes in advance so that they could shop and prepare the roasted chicken in advance as it required a longer cooking time.

Soror Alexa, a member of Xi Epsilon Omega Chapter in Amherst, NY, is a visual artist, trained chef and jewelry designer. Her training includes a degree in culinary arts and a ten-week culinary internship on the Amalfi Coast in Positano, Italy. She is a creative entrepreneur, visual artist and jewelry designer. She is also the co-founder of Eat Off Art, a multi-dimensional agency that provides transformative experiences through creativity, art and food.

In addition to preparation, Soror Alexa entertained, answered questions, explained the science behind cooking and seasoning and provided excellent cooking tips for novice and experienced cooks alike. Sorors were engaged with many cooking along with Chef Alexa.

During the Virtual 89th Great Lakes Regional Conference, our region along with Alpha Omega Foundation was able to gain a number of valuable sponsorships that enables us to give back to community organizations in the Cleveland area that do work that broadens the impact of Alpha Kappa Alpha. On Sunday, October 25, 2020, we gathered together to remember the sorors who have gone on before us. The Ivies Memorial began with Madam Regional Director Soror Carrie J. Clark delivering a moving tribute for our queen, Soror Eva L. Evans, 24th Supreme Basileus and 16th Great Lakes Regional Director. She, like all of our Ivies Beyond the Wall, are and will continue to be greatly missed. We can only hope that we can fill their shoes as we move forward in the great work they had already begun.

Led by our former Great Lakes Regional Directors, the region took time out to honor our Ivies Beyond the Wall within each cluster of the region. Soror Gloria Stephens Smith, 18th Great Lakes Regional Director informed us that “not failure, but low aim is sin” as we remembered the Michigan Cluster sorors. “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me” (John 14:1) was the message from Soror Ann Battles, 20th Great Lakes Regional Director when remembering the sorors of the Northern Ohio Cluster. Before we honored our sorors from the Northern Ohio/Western Pennsylvania Cluster, Soror Toni S. Kendrick, 28th Great Lakes Regional Director reminded us that “Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what’s to be, A resting place along the road, to sweet eternity.” For the sorors of the Southern Ohio Cluster, Soror Charlene Truitt Nelson, 27th Great Lakes Regional Director expressed “A million times we’ve missed you, a million times we’ve cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would’ve died.” Soror Phyllis E. Robinson, 22nd Great Lakes Regional Director prepared us to remember our Western New York Cluster sorors and encouraged us to “keep the faith, sorors, God is still on the throne.” The memorial closed with the remembrance of our sorors from the West Virginia Cluster where 23rd Great Lakes Regional Director Soror Patricia Petty Wilson made a tribute to Soror Eva L. Evans and conveyed that “Our hearts are broken forever.”

There is a quote that goes: “People often say that when a loved one dies, we just need to forget and move on. However, the true way to heal is to remember. Keep their memories alive! They were a part of you and your life. They existed. Never bury your feelings. It’s ok to speak their name. It is ok to remember.” During this very moving Ivies Memorial, that is just what we did. We spoke their names. We remembered.

Great Lakes Region sorors paid tribute to 69 Silver, 34 Golden, and 9 Diamond Sorors at the Jewels Crowning Ceremony. Sadly, two of our loved, revered, and never forgotten Diamonds, Sorors Margaret Elizabeth Evans York and Mary Jane Mitchell Page, became Ivies Beyond the Wall prior to the Ceremony. Sorors York and Page were both members of Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter, Pittsburgh, PA. The Ceremony opened with a warm welcome by Soror Renee Micou, International Diamond, Pearl, Golden and Silver Soror Committee who invited us to celebrate our Jewels.

Soror Micou provided a history of the Sorority’s membership milestones recognition, which was the vision of Soror Bernice I. Sumlin, 19th Supreme Basileus. Soror Sumlin presented the first Gold medallions to members with 50 or more years of membership in the Sorority in 1976. This was followed by regional recognitions for 25, 50 and 75-year membership milestones. The Bernice I. Sumlin Jewels Recognition Luncheon honors her memory.

Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation which included honorees’ photos and sorority information, Sorors Sharon M. Bowman, Former International Protocol Chairman and Renee R. Micou read the names of our new Jewels.

Soror Bowman introduced Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, 29th Supreme Basileus. Soror Buckhanan Wilson provided a Litany of Celebration, after which our honorees treated us to a DON’T RUSH CHALLENGE “Quick Change” video recognizing their jewel membership status.

The Virtual Great Lakes Regional Conference hosted a virtual step show featuring both undergraduate and graduate chapters that was emceed by Big Steve, DJ Lokey, and step show chairman, Soror Ashley Thomas from Alpha Omega Chapter, Cleveland, Ohio. To ensure a socially distanced step show, each competing chapter had to submit videos from the past in order to compete for the $500 grand prize. The first video was from Delta Phi Chapter at Ohio University. The second video was from Alpha Omega Chapter in Cleveland, Ohio. The third video was from Beta Eta Chapter at University of Michigan. The fourth video was from Zeta Theta Omega Chapter in Akron, Ohio. The fifth video was from Lambda Phi Omega Chapter in Cleveland, Ohio. The winner was from Beta Eta Chapter at University of Michigan, and they won the $500 grand prize to support the work of their chapter.

The Dr. Eva L. Evans Legacy Parade was a chance to showcase grandmothers, mothers, daughters and sisters during the virtual 89th Great Lakes Regional Conference.

This year’s parade held particular significance as it was the first held since the loss of our 24th Supreme Basileus and 16th Great Lakes Regional Director Soror Eva L. Evans. Soror Toni S. Kendrick, 28th Great Lakes Regional Director poignantly described the meaning that the Legacy Parade holds to the Great Lakes Region, since it was Soror Evan's desire to ensure daughters, granddaughters and other specific family members of sorors had the opportunity to be a part of our great sisterhood. It was also Soror Kendrick who first named the Great Lakes Region’s observance in Soror Evan’s honor.

In addition, First Supreme Anti-Basileus Soror Danette Anthony Reed delivered a stunning spoken word rendition of her adapted version of one of Maya Angelou’s most popular poems, Phenomenal Woman. Soror Reed called her version Phenomenal AKA Legacy. As one who comes from a family of sorors (her mother, grandmother and daughter are all members), Soror Reed masterfully pointed out the attributes and honor of phenomenal legacies who help build and strengthen our sorority.

Virtual 89th Conference Recap Glamorous in Green for the Emerald City Ball What would a Great Lakes Regional Conference be without the opportunity for sorors to get glammed up and have a night on the town? Well, even in this virtual world, that’s just what we did. Yes, that’s right...after a day of business, sorors got dressed up in their glamorous green, headed to their living rooms, or rather their ballrooms, and attended the Virtual Emerald City Ball. And what a ball it was! The evening started with an outstanding musical performance from Karamu House, Cleveland’s premier African American performing arts theatre. For just a few moments, it was as if we were all transported right into the “The Wiz,” singing and dancing right along with them.

After a warm welcome from Regional Director, Soror Carrie J. Clark, greetings were brought forth by our very own Supreme Basileus, Soror Glenda Glover. For the GREAT Great Lakes Region sorors, that would have been plenty, but the night was just getting started. Next, sorors would hear from the guest speaker for the evening, none other than Bakari Sellers, attorney, author, politi-cal commentator, and former South Carolina Representative. Mr. Sellers brought a powerful message fitting for times such as these. The evening’s excitement continued with another Wiz-like musical performance from Soror Tina D. Stump of Alpha Omega Chapter and Soror Arshawna Warren of Omega Chapter.

As the evening came to a close the former Reginal Directors presented a special gift presentation to Regional Director, Soror Carrie J. Clark and sorors were gearing up for the “After Glo” party.

Before Soror Keniece Y. Gray took undergraduate sorors on a journey dedicated to helping them discover their authentic selves in a powerful session called “A Cinderella Story: Exchange of Excellence,” Second Supreme Anti-Basileus Soror Jasmyne E. McCoy gave greetings. Soror Gray, who is a former International Second Vice President, reminded sorors that “no one can be you better than you” and told sorors that staying authentic keeps you grounded. She talked about three elements of authenticity which are: 1. Being true to yourself 2. Maintaining coherence to what you say and what you do 3. Making value-based choices She also identified six barriers to authenticity: 1. People Pleasing 2. Comparison 3. Rule Following 4. Perfectionism 5. Workaholism 6. Not Knowing Your “Why” Participants identified not knowing their “why” as their biggest barrier.

Soror Gray, who is currently a first-year law student at Georgetown University Law Center, recounted her journey from working at Deloitte after college to now law school.

She encouraged undergraduate sorors to take control and do what they need to do to get where they want to go.

As a final activity, participants were encouraged to complete a Johari Window exercise, and members of the Undergraduate Leadership Team shared their responses. She also shared tips on how to build and cultivate your personal brand. Some suggestions were: 1. Get a LinkedIn account 2. Use photos that emphasize your brand 3. Watch what you post on social media 4. Consider a daily affirmation each morning During the workshop there was also interactive engagement with the Great Lakes Leadership Fellows.

Omega Xi Omega Interim Associate Provost Appointment NEW HAVEN, MI – Dr. Cynthia Miree-Coppin was appointed to serve as Interim Associate Provost at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Dr. Miree-Coppin is an accomplished scholar and her work has been published in academic journals. She is a passionate teacher with an abiding interest in developing and deepening her students’ engagement.

Dr. Miree-Coppin has been honored with the School of Business Administration’s Teaching Excellence Award, its Distinguished Service Award on two occasions, and OU’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion Faculty Excellence Award.

Dr. Miree-Coppin is a charter member of Omega Xi Omega Chapter where she currently holds the office of Parliamentarian.

Soror Named Women of Excellence NEW HAVEN, MI – Dr. Carla Postell, Director, Curriculum Integration & Instruction Hazel Park Schools, has been named a Michigan Chronicle 2020 Women of Excellence honoree.

Dr. Postell has served as a high school Principal, Assistant Principal, and an Adjunct Professor. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from the University of Michigan, and her Doctorate of Education from Western Michigan University.

Dr. Postell is a charter member of Omega Xi Omega Chapter, where she currently holds the office of Anti-Basileus.

Tau Alpha Omega Global Account Manager Appointment REDFORD, MI - Soror Paulina Johnson was promoted to Global Account Manager at ArcelorMittal USA. In this new role, Soror Paulina is the only African American female senior leader for the largest global steel producer in the world. Her responsibilities include leading a global sales team responsible for $1 billion in annual sales, providing commercial leadership and management, developing and implementing a selling strategy, and driving global cooperation and decisionmaking for the Ford account. Soror Johnson was initiated into Nu Lambda Chapter on March 3, 1996. She is a former basileus of Eta Kappa Omega and the current basileus of Tau Alpha Omega Chapter.

Alpha Rho Omega Chief Lending Officer Appointment DETROIT, MI â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Soror Alexis Dishman of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter, has been selected by Michigan Women Forward (MWF) as their Chief Lending Officer.

She will be leading their effort to become a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). In her role, she will be instrumental in helping small business owners access capital, improve their business acumen and grow their financial education.

Soror Alexis began her career in banking and transitioned to the non-profit sector in 2015. Her passion for being a catalyst in the area of economic growth for minorities is unparalleled. Soror Alexis has been the recipient of various awards including The Michigan Chronicle Woman of Excellence Award and Crainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 40 under 40.

Pi Tau Omega Small Business Leadership Council Appointment SOUTHFIELD, MI - Pi Tau Omega Soror Nilda Thomas was recently appointed to the National Small Business Association Leadership Council (NSBA). She joins the NSBA Leadership Council alongside other small-business advocates from across the country as they work to promote the interests of small businesses to policymakers in Washington, D.C. Additionally, Soror Nilda founded Workforce e-Training Solutions, LLC, which provides access to online career and technical training programs for minorities, teens, adult learners, women and return to work initiatives for veterans, displaced workers, and those returning to society.

Soror Doniska Taylor is an international student from Nassau, The Bahamas majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Hospitality Management. She is a Bahamas Public School Scholar who enjoys daily community service and communication with future scholars. She is a Graduating Senior and plans on attending Graduate School to study Human Resources.

Soror Doniska currently serves as the Vice President of the International Student Organization, Vice President of The Hospitality Club and a Student Ambassador. She also serves as a Resident Advisor in a Freshman Hall and encourages her residents academically and emotionally. Soror Doniska is a member of Delta Mu Delta and Alpha Kappa Mu Honors Societies.

Soror Doniska previously served as Miss Freshman, Miss Sophomore, Miss Junior and is currently Miss Central State University.

Soror Doniska is one of the newest members of Beta Xi Chapter. Her passion is encouraging youth within various communities to continue to uphold academic and professional standards.

Alpha Omega Alpha Omega’s COVID-19 Response CLEVELAND, OH - Alpha Omega Chapter did “Rise Up” in virtual service against COVID-19. Its April 14th Facebook PSA video posting on risks and transmission safeguards against the virus featured Basileus Sandra Brinson, First Anti-Basileus Angela Rush, and Second Anti-Basileus Marsha Smith. For the Donate-A-Thon on April 20th, sorors challenged themselves to assist the Greater Cleveland Food Bank with a goal of $1917, representing the chapter’s chartered year and each soror giving $4.44, representing chapter membership. Sorors did “Rise Up!” that day, donating over $3,100 to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. We thank the Alpha Omega Health Committee for leading these health and wellness virtual service efforts that align with International Target 2.

Alpha Omega Foundation Sankofa 2020 CLEVELAND, OH – Sept. 12, 2020 – Alpha Omega Foundation, Inc. addressed Targets 1, 2, 3, and 5 at “Sankofa,” the virtual professional development workshop for women and girls 16 and older aging out of foster care, experiencing homelessness, or immigrants/refugees. Reminded to get out the vote, guests also heard human resource professionals detail interview dynamics. The #dontrushchallenge video featured casual and business casual attire. Dawson Foundation brothers--a judge and a TV news anchor-pastor---illustrated building spiritual and positive mindsets. The #CAPSM committee explained college admissions and financial aid information. Financial literacy strategies concluded the workshop. Gift cards for professional clothing, personal care packs, and virtual resource guides were available for the 22 guests.

Alpha Omicron Omega Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration CHARLESTON, WV. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Alpha Omicron Omega sorors participated in a city-wide celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the national holiday, January 20, 2020.

During this community-wide inaugural event, the historically known Court Street in Charleston, West Virginia, was renamed the Honorary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In a heartfelt letter to the community, Dr. Bernice King expressed gratitude for the day of celebration and dedication to her father. Chapter member and Councilwoman Jennifer Pharr was instrumental in the renaming of the street and organizing the celebration that followed the ceremony.

Virtual Black Health Event YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Epsilon Mu Omega Chapter members participated in a virtual event for Target II Women’s Healthcare and Wellness. “Black Health: It’s Time We Talk” was hosted on June 9 by Shenango Valley Urban League and Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League.

Sorority member, Dr. Erin Houston is the Executive Director of the Shenango Valley Urban League. Sorority members Dr. Virginia Banks, Infectious Disease Specialists, and Dr. Tonia Farmer-Pitts, Otolaryngology/H ead & Neck Surgeon, participated as panelists. These sorors exemplify excellence in service to our communities.

Financial Planning Session YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Epsilon Mu Omega Chapter members participated in a virtual lunch seriesas part of Target III Building Your Economic Legacy. Sorority member, Dr. Erin Houston, Shenango Valley Urban League Executive Director, hosted a Virtual Lunch Break Series - Ask a Financial Planner. Soror Diane Gardner, Certified Financial Planner™, presented on Taking Control of your Finances, Managing the Unexpected-Unemployment Transition and How to Handle Your 401(k). These sorors are assisting our communities with Building Your Economic Legacy.

Eta Iota Omega HBCU Virtual Tour INKSTER, MI - On June 1, Eta Iota Omega and youth group, Sorrelles, had a once in a lifetime opportunity to tour 14 HBCUs in one day! Among the stops on the virtual HBCU tour were North Carolina A&T, Jackson State, Howard University, Hampton University and Tougaloo College. At no cost, and from the comfort of their own homes, attendees could see images of the campus and get comprehensive information on admissions, programs and scholarships.

Strengthening Sisterhood During a Pandemic INKSTER, MI - Even with adhering to social distancing requirements, Eta Iota Omega members continued to fellowship. So far, five virtual chapter parties have been hosted. Each party is complete with a theme, activities, prizes, prayers and tons of laughs. The themes have highlighted the chapter’s 60-year anniversary such as ‘Quiz Me PINK: 60 Questions For 60 Years of Service’.

Adorned in AKA paraphernalia and pearls, virtual partygoers participated in a sorority paraphernalia scavenger hunt; comedy; musical trivia; AKA bingo and an exciting refresher on sorority chants.

Promoting Mental Health During COVID-19 INKSTER, MI - Living during a pandemic is unprecedented and can make mental health vulnerable.

Eta Iota Omega’s Target 2: Women’s Health and Wellness Committee, took on the challenge to make sure chapter members – and the community – had the tools to keep mental health intact by hosting a series of virtual initiatives.

The committee hosted a Mental Health 101 Seminar on May 28, 2020. The seminar addressed various mental health concerns for children and adults specific to COVID-19. The initiative also included a social media campaign, #WellnessWednesday, to share weekly positive messages, healthy recipes and health tips.

I otaNu N uOmega O mega Iota Investment in Historic Structure SYRACUSE, NY - Soror Evelyn Ingram is leading the charge on an economic development venture to transform and revitalize the south side of Syracuse by recently purchasing a church listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The former South Presbyterian Church, built in 1907, will be named “The Castle” and renovated to become a multi-use facility for sophisticated styled events. She and her business partner Chino Ingram plan to invest $7 million to transform the facility.

The iconic landmark stood vacant for more than a decade, in dire need of repair. Soror Evelyn said, “We want guests to feel proud of our heritage and have a sense of satisfaction that this is a Black-owned and operated business.”

Up O mega XXii O mega Omega Omega Sorors Serving the United Nations NEW HAVEN, MI â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporatedâ&#x201C;&#x2021; continues its legacy of global leadership and service with the election of six sorors from five metro Detroit chapters to the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) Greater Detroit Chapter Board of Directors.

Omega Epsilon Omega Explore the Mind, Body and Soul Event NOVI, MI - On Sunday, September 27, 2020, Omega Epsilon Omega hosted an afternoon of relaxation while taking some “sister to sister time” in exploring the Mind, Body and Soul.

The public event, hosted by Soror Joyce Hudson, Target II Women’s Healthcare and Wellness Chairman, and Soror Brittany Harris, Event Chairman, was to assist in the restoration of our entire body. Key presenters of the webinar included: • Tiffany Duneghy, Licensed Professional Counselor • Nisette Gray, Owner & Certified Personal Trainer – All4Fitness • Charisse Staine, Pastor - Detroit Worship Center Soror Angela Reed, Great Lakes Representative to International Programs, supported this program via Zoom.

Contribution to the Africa Mercy Ship

NOVI, MI - In a creative way, sorors from Omega Epsilon Omega raised $8,650 to help children in other countries receive free surgeries for a host of medical issues.

The chapter partnered with the Africa Mercy Ship to raise money for children suffering from life-threatening tumors, twisted limbs and blindness. Omega Epsilon Omega created 6 ships: Love Boat, Hope Floats, Wakanda Warriors, Ship of Zion, Anchor of Hope and Have Mercy! The captains and crew raised the money by doing things like donating hair and nail dollars since salons and nail shops were closed due to COVID-19. The crew included two OEO pirate AKA Pearl sorors.

Omega Epsilon Omega has been in partnership with Africa Mercy Ship since 2018.

Omega Xi Omega P3-Pearls, Pinot and Paperbacks NEW HAVEN, MI – The Target 4 Arts Committee of Omega Xi Omega hosted a book reading of Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon: The Story of the Last Black Cargo. During the span of the Harlem Renaissance also known as the New Negro Movement, the young anthropologist, working on her first big assignment, wanted to write about freedom and humanity. In the summer of 1927, Zora Neale Hurston traveled to Plateau, Alabama to interview Cudjo Lewis, the last man sold into slavery. Cudjo’s African name was Oluale Kossola.

The book was written with some dialect to maintain authenticity, but the message was very clear, ‘freedom is not always free’.

Donations to Haiti and Refugees NEW HAVEN, MI – Even during this time of uncertainty, Target 5 and the Global Impact Committee continue to raise the bar by exceeding OXO’s donation goal for the pillowcase dresses to little girls in Haiti. Forty-two beautiful dresses will surely bring smiles to the more than deserving girls in need.

In honor of World Refugee Day, Omega Xi Omega joined forces with Pi Tau Omega to donate more than $1,000 in donated items to Samaritas – an organization designed to assist refugees in crisis with temporary housing, job training/skill development and other community services. The donations furnished kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and household supplies for two units.

Omega Xi Omega HBCU National Impact Day NEW HAVEN, MI – In addition to supporting HBCU National Impact Day, Omega Xi Omega’s efforts focused on social media activities and awareness. HBCU grads were recognized and highlighted. The HBCU grads spotlighted as to why they chose an HBCU, and those who did not attend an HBCU spotlighted their ties to an HBCU. Chapter members also viewed the movie, “Tell Them We Are Rising”.

Omega Xi Omega partnered with other Metro Detroit chapters for the 13th Annual Metro 9 Youth & Family Financial Literacy Conference, which offered a workshop on HBCUs and HBCU Funding & Application.

Pi Tau Omega “Be Resilient” Webinar SOUTHFIELD, MI - More than 100 guests participated in Pi Tau Omega Chapter’s virtual webinar “Be Resilient – Finding Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Peace in the Midst of the Storm.” Women’s Health and Wellness Chairman Soror Susan Gordon-Jackson facilitated PTO’s first webinar and Facebook Live broadcast. The panel discussion included healthy ways to focus on self-care when facing stress, grief and uncertainty amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and social justice unrest. PTO also partnered with Ascension Providence, Rev. Dr. Billie Beverly and Beverly Cameron, who shared their expertise and wisdom for physical and spiritual wellness. This presentation was valuable and well needed during these perilous times.

Summer 2020 Leadership Workshop SOUTHFIELD, MI – Pi Tau Omega Chapter held its inaugural Leadership Workshop series for sorors during the summer recess. The courses aligned with the chapter’s objective to prepare members for leadership roles. Basileus Zena Kyles worked with Soror Terry Mann, who is a certified speaker, trainer and coach with the John Maxwell Team, to identify leadership traits needed in the chapter. Sorors studied John C. Maxwell’s book, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, which focused on personal growth and tapping into one’s potential. This five-week workshop provided a wonderful avenue for chapter members to continue their personal growth in leadership.

$137K in Scholarship Awarded SOUTHFIELD, MI - Pi Tau Omega Chapter, through its foundation – The Pearls of Service Foundation – hosted a virtual scholarship presentation and awarded more than $137,500 in scholarship money. The winners were Lawrence Technological University Presidential Jubilee Freedom Scholarship (Joshua Perkins); Ascension Michigan Scholarship (Katrina Liang); Kemp Funeral Home Jubilee STEM Scholarship (Miah Powell); John T. Miller Memorial Scholarship (Julius Crouch); Zeke Ross & Lucille Parker Dynamically You Scholarship (Sarah Hall); Anglin/Burke Memorial Scholarship (Amy Hiltz); PSF General Scholarships (Davelle Hunt and Rogelilo Garcia); AKATeen Scholarship (J’Nise Bryd); and Historically Black Colleges & Universities Scholarship (Sarah Hall).

Zeta Alpha Omega World Refugee Day TOLEDO, OH- Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter held a virtual community impact day on June 20, 2020.

Target 5: Global Impact and Sisterly Relations presented a PowerPoint regarding refugees and a Jeopardy game was played. The winner won a $25 gift card.

Corine Dehabey, Program Director, US Together, local RAAP organization, informed participants about the process refugees go through to come to the United States. Dehabey stated families need personal toiletries and cleaning products. The chapter collected and donated dental products, personal hygiene products, laundry products and bathroom products on June 27.

Zeta Alpha Omega HBCU Impact Day with Royalty Queens TOLEDO, OH - Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter conducted a virtual zoom event with three phenomenal past campus queens to raise money for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) The event, via Facebook Live, was with three phenomenal past campus queens from Central State University, Kentucky State University and Bethune-Cookman University. Other former queens from Central State University also joined the discussion. A QR code was created and posted on social media for donations to be made directly to the EAF HBCU4Life page. Over $2,800 was raised that day with $425 from the event. Additionally, from September 20-26, 2020, social media sites and website posts showcased prominent HBCU graduates from different professional backgrounds each day.

Virtual Voters Registration Event

TOLEDO, OH- Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter hosted a Virtual Voters Registration and Community Conversation about Voter Suppression in collaboration with the Nonpartisan Ohio Voter Outreach Committee on September 28, 2020.

Participants were asked to check their voter registration status via OHVOTES.org while participating during the event. Rev. Dr. Susan Smith and Rev. Joan Van Becelaere were the presenters. A 12-minute documentary regarding Voter Suppression in Wilmington, N.C. was shown. Other information shared helped others check voter registration by phone, learn information on ballot issues and sign up as poll workers.
