SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS When visiting local beaches or enjoying an outdoor hike, always adhere to the safety signage.
Water Safety Never turn your back to the waves. This causes you to be unaware of the height or intensity of a wave that can knock you down. Know your limits. The ocean can be unpredictable and dangerous; if in doubt, don’t go out. Do not go into the ocean under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Adhere to beach signage that indicates water conditions. There could be strong currents, rip currents (water flowing away from the shore), high surf, jellyfish present, and dangerous shore breaks (plunging waves that hit the shore). Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. Do not swim in bad weather.
Land Safety
Practice the spirit of Aloha. Be respectful of the ‘Āina (land), people, and its culture. Please do not litter or disturb/touch the local wildlife. Please refrain from taking any rocks, sand, or native plants back with you. The weather is mainly sunny with occasional clouds/showers. Applying sunscreen and drinking plenty of water is recommended to avoid sunburns and dehydration. There are many options for scenic outdoor hikes, such as Diamond Head Trail, KoKo Crater Trail, Lanikai Pillbox Trail, and many more. Do your research before heading out. Some hiking locations have minimal safety railings, so please know your limits, follow the marked trails (protects native plants and you), and adhere to the safety signage. Be aware of your surroundings when walking on the street, and use crosswalks when available. 23
