Phantom U vs. Detective Butt It was a morning like any other, and Detective Butt and his assistant Brown were restless. “We need a case, Brown” the detective said with a sigh. At that very moment, they heard footsteps and a knock at the door.

I smell a case, Brown! The whiff of adventure!
“Lord Capricornus trusts no one, not even the police. But his daughter asked me to seek out the greatest detective in the land. That would be you, Detective Butt. You see, the Capricornus family owns the Starry Sky, a treasure of unrivaled beauty.”
“ Almost as beautiful as this flower. ”

So what if Detective Butt told me to . . .
We will take the case!
No-one will touch the Starry Sky,

“ Just as I hoped! Thank you! ”
“ Watch your back, Phantom U! ”
The great detective and Brown climbed in the butler’s car for the long drive to Capricornus Hall.

Ah! Use your ears, Brown.
Goatzart said, “ Or so I hear.”
That means even the loyal family butler has only heard of this jewel, never seen it.
If he hasn’t laid eyes upon it, they’ll hardly let two newcomers get close.
“ Goatzart? More No-zart. He he. ”
“My goodness. I truly am in the presence of a great detective” gasped Goatzart. “It’s true that Lord Capricornus only trusts his daughter. Nobody but she and her father know where the Starry Sky is concealed.”

“Oh my. Could this be the dashing Detective Butt?” a soft voice spoke from the second floor, where a beautiful woman stood with a wrinkled old goat.

The elderly gentlegoat scowled.
Baah! I need no guards! I have hidden the Starry Sky where no thief could find it.
“ Strangers are baa-ad news. No ifs, and certainly no butts! ”
With a wheeze, he retreated to his room and shut the door. I am so sorry about my father’s suspicious nature. I am his daughter, Stella. Thank you for taking our case.
BUG! BAAH HUM “ Detective Butt, at your service. ”

“The old man loves his books! ”
Stella guided Brown and Detective Butt into the living room. “Hm. So only five people live in this mansion,” said Detective Butt. “A challenge indeed for Phantom U to disguise himself among so few!”
Boy, she’s pretty.
Please, enjoy your tea, gentlemen.
Suddenly, Goatzart burst into the room. We have been visited by Phantom U! He left this package in the front hall!

And so Stella returned to her room to change. Suddenly Detective Butt gasped . . .
Of course! “ His strong suit . . . ”
Phantom U means a suit of armor.
Do you remember where it is? 25
Yes! The suit of armor was by the front door.
And sure enough, when Detective Butt removed the helmet, there was Goatzart!
“ Poor fellow, the helmet squished his face like jelly! ”
Stella returned, her dress now dry. “Thank goodness you found him. I was so worried. Well, I’m exhausted after all this excitement. I must rest. I’ll be in my room if you need me.” 26
The others carried Goatzart to the living room and laid the groaning butler on the couch.
“ So . . . stiff . . .”
“ Well, Detective . . . we may as well admit defeat. Phantom U’s just too many steps ahead. ”
“ Defeat? Never. Especially as I suspect we have already spoken to Phantom U himself. ” “ Huh?! You can’t be serious? ” “ Quite serious. You see . . . ”

“That sounded like Stella! ”
Detective Butt, Brown, Nanny, and Pan rushed toward the sound of the scream and burst through the door. There stood Lord Capricornus and Stella, looking as white as a sheep.

“The Starry Sky . . . gone . . . all gone!” Lord Capricornus whispered to himself. “Nobody else knew where you kept it, and somehow it’s been stolen? Where the heck did you hide this thing?!” cried Brown, but the old goat just sighed. Detective Butt scanned the room.
Aha! I can see where the Starry Sky was hidden.
Can spot its hiding place? Here’s a clue: What place does Lord Capricornus trust above all else?
Nonsense! It’s in a book!
“ Why, it must be Stella! ”
It was concealed in Stella’s hair!
Nothing else in this room has been touched.
It was wrapped inside her bun!
“It seems you are a great detective after all. I thought hiding it with my daughter at all times would keep it safe,” Lord Capricornus said with a sigh. The room fell quiet . . . then the detective spoke.
Perhaps you were right. As it happens,
the Starry Sky has not yet been stolen.
What?!
Whaddya mean, DB?!
30
I mean it can’t have been. Because Phantom U is here in the room with us right now!
We all know he’s a master of disguise.
Use your eyes, Brown! Take a close look at everyone in this room. One is clearly an imposter. Can you see?
“The detective is right. Eyes are the key to unraveling this mystery. ”
Look!
Lord Capricornus, age 72
Stella, age 28
Nanny, age 18
Pan, age 27
31
Yes! It is you, Stella—since we first met, it seems your eyes have changed color!
NO OO!!
O H H H! You think I am the great and handsome Phantom U?
What on earth makes you say that?
“ Allow me to explain . . .
“ You first came to me disguised as Goatzart, to offer us this case.
“ By then, of course, the real butler was already stuffed into that suit of armor. “Then you used the distraction of that
exploding puzzle box to slip away.
“ You hid out of sight, waiting for your Goatzart scarecrow to trick us and stain Stella’s dress.
“ When she went to change, you took your chance.
33
“You disguised yourself as Stella, which gave you the opportunity to get Lord Capricornus alone. You ran to him and said the Starry Sky had been stolen, which was all it took to trick him into revealing its location,” Detective Butt exclaimed with force.
” It can’t be! ”
“ Stella! No! ” “ Aha! I knew it! ”
And all so you could get your hands on the treasure.
The Starry Sky is gone?!
What?!
“Trés Bien, Detective.
It seems you have seen through my plan . . . ”
“ Stella . . . ? ”
35
" It is I! Phantom U!
Exactly as you suspected! "
36
You were desperate!
So you tried to use us to help you find the jewel! Well, you messed with the wrong detectives!
Brown was furious.
“Please. I only came to you to make this robbery a little more fun. I told Lord Capricornus someone was planning to steal the Starry Sky, knowing full well he wouldn’t trust the police and would send for you, Detective,” said Phantom U smugly. Trés Bien, All great
games need an opponent. Even the most beautiful
rose has its thorns. And the aroma of this one is sweet indeed.
“ Don’t forget to smell the roses! ”
“ Because now I know
where the jewel is hidden! It is as good as mine! ”

Now then, pups, to be fine, upstanding detectives, first you need to be able to stand up. Then you must learn to talk!
The truth is, even at my ripe old age, there' s plenty I don' t know. That’s why learning never gets old! Yes, just the other day there was a flower growing in my own garden that I didn' t recognize. Didn' t smell like any flower I' d smelled before…
But speaking of bones, believe it or not, when I was in school they used to call me the Bone King. You see, back in my day there was no guarantee there were enough lunch bones to go around! So come bone day it was every pup for themselves…
So I marched myself to the library to look up what I' d planted, and let me tell you, when I lifted down that encyclopedia...
But yours drooly always came away with a bone. Which is why they called me the Bone King, you see. I daresay it was all them bones I ate that had me feeling like a million bucks after just a single night’s shut-eye. But speaking of eyes…
“ By kibble! ” I thought, ” surely that' s a bone slipping out of alignment! ” But a night of sleep had me feeling good as new…
