The BOOK

Howard Pearlstein & James Munro

Red Comet Press . Brooklyn

I don’t want to tell you a story!

I. AM. TOO. ANGRY!

. . .
I guess hitting, kicking, and biting weren’t great things to do.

But moving my body helped me feel less angry.

Maybe next time I feel angry, I can move my body . . . but in a less destructive way.

Like this . . .

Hey, shaking is fun! Want to try it with me?

SHAKE your arms.

SHAKE your legs.

SHAKE your whole body.

BOOK REVIEW

The Angry Book

“ The Angry Book made me angry.”
—Stu Pidmeanie

Him saying mean things made ME angry! Really angry!

And when I’m feeling angry, I make . . . I made HIM angry?

Oh great . . . now I’m feeling angry all over again!

. . . MY ANGRY FACE!

Breathing helps me feel less angry, and look, I’m less red. Let me show you what I mean.
Think about something that makes you angry . . .

Okay, stop holding your breath. Now, let’s breathe like this . . .

Breathe in slowly, like you’re smelling a flower.

Then breathe out slowly, like you’re blowing out a candle.

Try it again . . .

Breatheinslowly,likeyou

’ resmelling

a flower .

Breathe out sl o w l y , l i k e y o u ’ r e b l o wing out acandle.

Breathe in s lowly, like you ’ re smelling a flower.

B r e athe out slowly, like you ’ re b l o w i n g out a candle .

Now that we’re both feeling good, I’ll tell you a story . . . Breathing this way feels so much better than making an angry face.

Plus, they drew all the things I hate most in the world . . .

Who would draw all over me?! Why would they draw all over me?!

One: Spinach!

Two: Naptime!

Three: Splinters!

Four: Heights!

Five: Snakes!

5 4 3 2 1

That’s it! Counting helped me feel better.

But you know what’s not okay? It is easy to get angry.

And that’s okay, because everyone gets angry once in a while (even grown-ups).

Hitting, kicking, and biting -- even though we might really feel like it.

Instead, it’s much better to do the things we talked about:

Shake your body.

Breathe in and out slowly.

Count until your anger feels less strong.

Okay, those are enough lessons for one book. Now . . . finally . . . I’ll tell you a story!

But wait a second . . . that won’t make me feel any better.

Instead, I’ll shake my body.

Breathe in and out slowly.

That’s better. Nothing will make me angry now.

And count to feel less angry.

BOOK REVIEW

James Munro

Illustrator James Munro would like to take this opportunity to apologize to The Angry Book. It was James who doodled on your clean pages, and he is sorry. James finds it hard NOT to draw on stuff, and this has got him in trouble in the past. His drawings now cover countless other things, from books to posters to films and more. He lives in Liverpool, United Kingdom, with his family and lots of pencils.

What makes a book angry? How about doodles on its pages? Or, even worse, a one-star review?! The Angry Book is so angry that it’s in no mood to tell a story. But as the pages turn, the book (and its readers) discover valuable techniques for managing their emotions and taming their anger.

Heartfelt and humorous, The Angry Book is perfect for young readers who need help preventing outbursts and developing strategies for managing strong emotions in a healthy way.
