WELCOME from the Editor

With the evenings getting cooler, soon the leaves on the trees will be falling. Autumn is fast approaching, bringing with it the temptation to dig out your favourite jumper and swap the gin & tonics for red wine. As usual, the Worcester BID team have made sure that you won’t be bored over the next few weeks. We’ve got a brilliant month of events with our Fashion, Health & Wellbeing campaign, culminating in a charity fashion show at the Royal Porcelain Works, and a chance to meet the makers behind Worcesters fabulous independents. This issue of The Social is a Fashion and Wellbeing special, exploring trends for AW19, as well as getting some tips on how to stay healthy and happy as the weather changes.

A/W TRENDS “Forals? For Autumn? Groundbreaking!”

Buds might typically suggest spring dressing, but this autumn expect unapologetically full floral fashion. And when it comes to blooms, the bigger the better. The same goes for handbags; the days of the dainty clutch are long gone and this autumn is about bags that are big enough to fit in the kitchen sink, not to mention your usual make-up, phone and keys. Tartan and checks made a comeback last year and they’re not going anywhere, and don’t be afraid to clash. Plus, channel your inner golfer because the diamond Argyll sweater was seen gracing catwalks again. Waist-cinching belts are also in this season – wear them around chunky knits to add shape to your silhouette. And while trainers still hold a special place in our hearts (and more importantly on our feet), the less comfortable but infinitely more elegant pointy shoe is making a comeback. Invest in ‘party feet’ now at River Island on the High Street. When it comes to outerwear, you can dig out last year’s puffa jacket as they’re still big news. If you fancy something new though, invest in brown leather. From camel to chocolate, every shade is acceptable, but midi is the length of choice for the fashionistas.

but they are also a great way to get more nutrients into your diet. It’s also the no-nonsense way to supplement your diet with beneficial superfoods and macronutrients such as wheatgrass, flax, maca, and nature’s best natural medicine – turmeric. A great base for your smoothie is banana, then add plant milk or water to make it thin enough to drink. If you’re making a fruit smoothie, it doesn’t matter what order you add the ingredients to your blender as soft fruit blends easily. If you’re whipping up a veggie smoothie however, then you’ll need to make sure that you blend everything

Head to Housewives Choice to stock up on ingredients. We recommend plenty of green veg, then apples, pears, berries and bananas, plus lemon and lime for flavour. You can also tailor your smoothie ingredients to target specific health concerns.

To boost digestive health, try adding carob and ginger. For energy and hormonal balancing, add some maca. Flaxseed is great for your heart, and turmeric has a huge number of benefits, including being anti-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant. You can pick up all these nutritional supplements from Revital in The Shambles, or Grape Tree or Holland & Barrett, both in Mealcheapen Street. And if you need a blender, pop to Cookmate on Broad Street, or Argos on the Shambles, for a wide selection, including the easy-clean favourite Nutribullet.

4. For the cooked rhubarb: boil a pan of water and drop in 1kg of the pink rhubarb - don’t overcook it as it will lose a lot of colour and flavour, it should take roughly 4 minutes. Take off the heat and drain

the water off and continue to cook out the rhubarb in a pan, adding about 100ml of double cream and continue to cook out for a further four minutes before blending. Mix until the purée is smooth, then pass it through a sieve to remove any last lumps. 6. Finally, for the plum jus, slow cook 1kg of plums, which have already been cut up and prepped, in a pan of water. When the plums are soft, drain the water out of the pan and blitz the plums with a blender and then put the plum paste in a pan with water and a stock cube and stir until it has a thick gravy-like texture.

MEET YOUR CITY CENTRE NEIGHBOURS You might recognise Phoebe as the editor of this magazine. During a recent editorial meeting, we decided we wanted to use this magazine to introduce our High Street Heroes, the people from our local city centre community. Who better to kick this feature off than Phoebe, who is Chief Executive of Worcester Business Improvement District (BID) and the dynamic driving force behind the city’s flourishing commercial community.

A HERO PRODUCT T H AT Y O U C A N ’ T LIVE WITHOUT For sun and screen protection that’s loved by the A-list, visit Journey on Copenhagen Street– Worcester’s only stockist of cult product Heliocare. With SPF 50, this sunscreen is light and skin enhancing. Make sure you apply it everywhere that is exposed – research shows that most people apply sunscreen poorly, missing important bits such as the neck and hairline. And don’t forget to reapply regularly throughout the day.

In fact, don’t be afraid to really slather on your sunscreen, as you won’t be able to save any leftovers for next year. SPF has a lifespan and most creams won’t last more than 12 months (check the back of the bottle for information; look for an open pot symbol with 6m or 12m on it). After a summer of fun and sun, it’s vital to show your skin some TLC. Exfoliate once or twice a week and then apply a good moisturiser at night and then a high SPF in the day. Newly revealed cells are particularly sensitive and so need protection, particularly if you favour microdermabrasion. And finally, make water your best friend. As well as drinking as much as you can through the day (healthcare professionals recommend 6-8 glasses), be sure to thoroughly cleanse your skin both morning and night and immediately after any workouts.

HAIR TRENDS We all love long, beachy, sun-kissed tresses over the summer, but as the warm months draw to a close, it’s time to refresh your style. Journey is also a salon, so book yourself a cut, or at least a decent trim, to get rid of those dry and split ends. We recommend washing with Davines’ Oi shampoo for sleekness and shine, then using their styling products for silky hair that reflects the last of the sun’s rays. Journey also has a braid bar, suitable for both long and short hair, and their expert stylists can add this season’s hottest trend, the micro fringe or ‘baby bangs’ as it’s now known.

GET YOUR SKIN BACK TO ITS BEST Summer sun and air pollution unfortunately mean an increased chance of hyperpigmentation, age spots, dehydration, congestion, and reduced collagen and elastin, leading to more wrinkles. The Dream and Deluxe Facials at Journey are a quick fix to help get your skin back to its best. Featuring new massage techniques and luxury Gaylia Kristensen products, this state-of-the-art facial will release the tension that shows as strain on our faces, leaving you looking refreshed.

WILLS AND WEL LBEING BY SME SOLICITORS In the discussion on health and wellbeing, the subject of death doesn’t sit too comfortably. Death is inevitably distressing, but having a Will could bring comfort, reassurance and calm for both you and your loved ones. SME Solicitors in Sansome Walk are experts in Wills and Probate and they can help you plan for the future and ensure that every aspect of your Will is correct. Samantha Lloyd, Head of Wills and Probate at SME Solicitors, said: “A significant number of people still die without having made a Will and this can cause stress and problems for family left behind. It is vital to get everything prepared by a professional to ensure your Will is entirely valid, accurate and lawful. “In making your Will, you are taking your family’s future wellbeing into account, because being the Executor of a Will can cause added stress and heartache. With everything in place from an early age, your Will gives you and your loved ones the peace of mind to live your lives to the fullest.” Factors such as Inheritance, Income and Capital Gains Tax are covered, as are Trusts, time limits, specific laws detailing how assets should be valued, and more. Samantha Lloyd is Head of Wills and Probate at SME Solicitors at 8 Sansome Walk, Worcester. Contact her for advice on Samantha.Lloyd@smesolicitors. co.uk or by telephone on 01905 723561.
