Knowledge talks but wisdom listens

The tale of Athena and Poseidon depicts a contest to determine which of the two gods would become the patron deity of the city of Athens. According to the myth, Athena, and Poseidon both wished to become the great protector of Athens, and they agreed to a partake in a competition to determine who would be chosen for the role.

Poseidon thrust his trident into the earth, and a fountain of saltwater emerged. He declared that this was a verification of his power and ability to provide the city with a valuable resource. However, the water was salty and not suitable for drinking or farming.

When it came to Athena’s turn, the Goddess planted an olive tree, which was viewed as a symbol of peace, prosperity, and abundance. The people of Athens were in awe of Athena’s gift, as olives could be used for food, oil, wood and trade. Athena was announced the winner, and the city was named after her. This myth represents the importance of wisdom, strategy, and problem solving. It also highlights the value of peaceful resources over violent ones.

The concept of wisdom and having a tactical frame of mind when it comes to challenges can be represented through an Owl, They are logical, systematic, and conscientious. Having these cunning traits allows the owl to become an intelligent hunter, reducing the need for it to become an aggressive predator, the owl is strategic which allows them to conserve energy. One of the Owl’s most unique traits are it’s large wings. The owl’s wings have a soft, dampened texture with combed ends which helps muffle the typical swooshing sounds of wings flapping, this allows the owl to hunt stealthily, furthermore, the large wings also serve to protect the bird from the elements. The motion and the arced shape of the wings represents protection and shelter. A building can use the wing-like form as an aesthetically pleasing roof, serving as a creative shading element for a design.

Two powerful Gods Poseidon and Athena come together for a contest to become the protector of Athens, Both Gods are well and truly capable of creating War and chaos however, this contest exposes the true meaning of Power.

TACTICS

NATURE

The Two Gods must present a Gift before the people of Athens, The gifts chosen would represent the true nature of the Gods, Poseidon proved to be violent and Athena came out to be Generous and caring.

Although Athena possesses destructive power, her choice to demonstrate her resourcefulness rather than her violent capabilities through her gift, was an intelligent move which won her the votes for the contest.

WISDOM

Athena wins the contest through her intelligence and demonstrates that her ability to provide resources for the people of Athens as well as maintaining peace and order trumps a violent and emotionally unstable leader.

ALLEGORY

Sometimes the Way to obtain what you want is through making practical and intelligent choices. Choosing what you hide and show to people can paint you in a different light. having wisdom and understanding is a powerful skill.

Experimentation

The mechanical model of a lamp fixture design depicts an Owl’s wings opening and closing, the motion of the models arms represents the protection it’s wings provide for it’s body, protecting it from the elements. This portrays how Athena is the protector and the intelligence of Athens

The mechanical model is made up of a rod, harness, arms, pivot shaft, base, amd tube

The rod puts pressure on the base to in order for it to move downwards, the tube supports the rod, the harness is attatched to the arm which is used to tug the arm upwards, the arms use the pivot shaft to rotate.

As the rod is pushed downwards space is created between the tube and base, this expansion of space tightens the harness and brings the arm upwards, the arm rotates on the pivot shaft and starts to open up.

Once the rod is fully pushed down the mechanical model’s arms(lamp shades) fully open up exposing the light bulb.

Geometry & Effect

The initial Light design began as a more rigid, robotic form. The Geometry explored the different potentials of the design and added a sense of natural flow to the Pendant light.

After adding a more natural flow to the design using Geometry exploration, The design was developed into a functional pendant light which now included the natural motion of a real wing.

The pendant light uses a motor and a gear system to reel the stainless steel wires up and down to open and close the pendant light. In the closed position the LED light seeps through the cracks of the shades giving it an aesthetically pleasing apeal

The opening and closing wing-like motion of the pendant light is represented through the 2D line work. The First illustration shows the pendant light closed, as the series progresses the Shades start to open.

Variations & Mechanism

Initial Design was rigid, with cut off ends. a more sharp point was added to start giving the form some character.

The points were very sharp and still quite rigid looking. The next step was to add some natural rounding for the tips of the shades

Initially, experimentations were made using different shapes to create the light’s shades, this design of the pendant light was too square and rigid in shape.

In the next trial, the wings of the light illustrated were too pointy and not ideal for the final form.

The rounded tips gave the pendant light shades more wing-like shapes, however, The light as a whole became too spherical

In this sketch, an attempt was made to tone down the rigidity of the wings, the edges were rounded off.

In this stage, the rounded shade points were stretched downwards to give a wing-like shape. The pendant light as a whole was also elongated for better arrangement

After the experimental sketches, this form looked most natural and became the final look.

Children/visitors will look up and point at the moving lights with joy, prompting others nearby to gaze at hangings and admire their aesthetics.

shade component is connected to structural arch and a pivot screw is used to allow the part to move up and down

The pendant lights will be located inside the state Library of Victoria, the lights opening and closing will represent the power and strength of wisdom for the visitors in the library.Visitors will be studying/reading and during their break they will look up at the moving lights and feel inspired.
