Beyond the Wave: Taking Your Wakesurfing Skills to the Next Level by AJ Abdelnour

Wakesurfing becomes even more exciting when you move beyond the basics and start testing new tricks. Advanced moves can make your rides more creative and challenging. However, learning them takes patience, balance, and good timing. The best way to improve is to build your skills slowly while staying comfortable on the board, as AJ Abdelnour explains.

One trick worth learning is the surface 360. This move requires you to rotate your board and body in a full circle while staying on the water. Start by practicing smaller spins. Keep your knees bent and your weight centered over the board. Use your shoulders to begin the rotation, then let your hips and board follow. Keeping your eyes focused on the direction of the spin can help you stay balanced. Once you feel confident with spins, you can try small jumps. Use the natural shape of the wave to lift your board instead of forcing the jump. Bend your knees as you approach the wave, then extend your legs gently as you leave the water. Keep your body relaxed as you land. A soft landing is more important than getting a lot of height. Another fun challenge is the shuv-it. This trick involves turning the board underneath your body. It may look simple, but it requires precise foot movement and timing. Practice the motion at a comfortable speed before adding more power. You can also experiment with grabs once you are comfortable leaving the water and reaching down to touch the board in the air, which adds style and control. Start with small airs and focus on maintaining your balance before attempting bigger movements. Improving your wakesurfing skills is not only about learning new tricks. It is also about improving control. Try riding switch, changing your speed, and practicing smooth turns. These skills can make advanced tricks easier and help you feel more confident on the wave. Always keep safety in mind when practicing. Wear a suitable life jacket, work with an experienced boat driver, and make sure there is plenty of space around you. Avoid trying difficult tricks when you are tired or unsure of your ability. Most importantly, enjoy the process. Every missed landing teaches you something useful. Stay patient, practice regularly, and celebrate small improvements. With time, advanced wakesurfing tricks can become a natural part of your riding style and help you discover just how far you can go on the water.
