Letter From a New Member

What first attracted me to AIS News was nothing special. I glanced at the sign-up announcement when the newsletter was first established but dismissed it and went on with my day. Sure, it was a CAS opportunity, but I had over a year to get that done. I thought, “who has the time to make a newsletter that abysmally few people will even take the time to skim, let alone appreciate?” One day, I became one of those people. Just like any other student trying to stay sane during the lockdown, I was at my desk looking for any and all reasons to procrastinate before a Teams notification popped up: Mr Beales just posted a new edition of the newsletter. Nice timing. The plan was simple – a quick skim and back to procrastinating. However, I was astonished at how it looked. It was no short of masterful. The design was simple and organised yet pleasing to the eye. The writing was succinct and expressive. This was when I decided that I wanted to be a part of it and jumped at the opportunity of a sign-up a few months later.

Here's a bit about myself. Reading and writing are things I love to do but I never actively did anything to build onto these passions. I even wanted to be an author at one point. I still do. Consequently, I earned nothing besides an adequately extensive vocabulary with the sole purpose of wowing my peers. Being part of the Editorial team not only gives me a reason to work on my writing, but also a way for me to help produce nothing short of admirable works of art with my peers. It hasn’t been very long since I became a part of this little organisation. After all, this is only my first article. Yet, from what I’ve seen, I can absolutely vouch for our members’ hospitality and professionalism. I’m surrounded by wonderful and intelligent fellow students who learn from each other. I know for a fact that this experience will contribute to how I think of and conduct myself in the future. For that, I sure am thankful.

Sure, tons of people tend to (and will no doubt continue to) gloss over these monthly newsletters, but that doesn’t matter. Well, to me at the very least. What matters is that we enjoy making something that we can proudly look back on years later and say, “I was a part of that”. And for the few that happen to have a bit of spare time on their hands and decided to dedicate it to reading our articles – we appreciate you for checking out the fruits of our labour. We’ll try our best to continue to inform and entertain you all in the months and years to come. And if we fail to do so…blame Ishan.

f o t n e d Stue Month th

In this edition of the Student of the Month series, we interviewed Bao Chau, an outstanding student of the AIS Community, as a book she wrote recently got published. Let’s find out more about her!

Can you introduce yourself? Can you tell us briefly ab out Hello!! I’m Bao Chau. I'm a new student here at AIS, I just joined this community and I’m really excited to have this interview with you :)!

When did you start to write this book?

your book?

Of course! The title is called “H oney and Coffee”, an d revolves aroun d this Weasel who wa nts to introduc e his coffee to the for est’s animal frie nds. I wanted to have a very simple plo t that can relate to ch ildren’s mindset , and I really hope tha t I can have a cle ar message acros s to them that can be read over and over again.

I heard of the children’s writing competition way back in late 2020 when I was still at my old school. I had many ideas planned out

How many books do you think will be sold? Why?

already, but to fully produce, write and illustrate the book, I did all of

about 3000-4000 books, I really hope I can sell all of them. So after this interview, I really hope you all are intrigued and check out the bookstores in April this year !! If you have any younger siblings or cousins, this book would be the perfect gift for them.

What inspired you to write a book? I had a school trip when I was in 6th grade to the Vietnamese highlands, more specifically, Tay Nguyen. I was fortunate enough to try out a speciality up there, which is the Weasel’s coffee! It was sadly very bitter and bland, and needless to say I didn’t have a good time on the toilet after drinking that.

Fast forward a few years later, where I was planning out stories for the writing competition. I suddenly remember the experience drinking the bitter coffee, and correlating that to the contrast it had with honey, known to be very sweet and pleasant. The big difference between them gave me inspiration around the two flavours, and how they could combine together.

Did you have any trouble or difficulties during writing this book? While I had so much fun illustrating and colouring the book, it came with major challenges that I had to face. It was a colour watercolour-based illustration book, so therefore I had to take a lot of time to prepare the colours as well as the colouring process only in a week. The formatting too was very different: since the pages were scanned with high-quality printing machines onto the book, this meant that I had to draw on papers twice! The size of the book to have the highquality resolution on the final product. I also had multiple doublepage spread illustrations, and I had to print out a long piece of watercolour paper to draw on, which was pretty interesting. But overall it was such a therapeutic experience colouring them, and the thought of one day being able to see my book in stores really motivated me to finish it.

Can you tell us your process while writing this book? book than illustrating it, I had more trouble writing the oted to be targeted prom actually. Since this was se specific words and choo to towards children, I had them. Of course, I for suited vocabulary that is well

Every year, women continue to make extraordinary achievements and discoveries. This month, we had the chance to celebrate the social, economic and political achievements of women, reflect on progress and demand gender equality on International Women's Day. The year 2020 and the beginning of 2021 may have been uneventful for some because of the ongoing outbreak of Covid-19. Fortunately, several women you may not yet know were working around the clock to produce safe, effective vaccines, breaking records and standards about women in science with their ingenuity and persistence. The story that we want to tell today is about the discovery of a vaccine by a group of women scientists that saved thousands of people in 2021.

Katalin Karikó and the Covid vaccine The one who started it all was Katalin Karikó. She lived in an area where there was no running water and a refrigerator. When she grew up, her idea got rejected at least 24 times. But every time, she always wanted to know why her idea doesn’t work and how she can improve it.

8

Kariko joined BioNTech in 2013 to head its messenger RNA (mRNA) program. When Covid was first detected, she and her team were ready to work. She joined up with other people including Kathrin Jansen, Kizzmekia Corbett, and Sarah Gilbert. Jansen was the head of research and development. She is known for developing vaccines for human papillomavirus. Kizzmekia Corbett was the Immunologist of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Through her, the team was able to collaborate with Moderna to make the vaccine in a record time. Lastly, Sarah Gilbert, a professor at Oxford University’s Jenner Institute and one of the scientists behind the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, had already developed a vaccine for another coronavirus disease, MERS. She joined the crew and used her knowledge as a base for them to develop the vaccine. The team worked together and was able to give out an incredible result. Vaccines for COVID-19 are critical tools for helping bring the pandemic under control when combined with effective testing and existing prevention measures. Their vaccine is what slows down the virus and saves thousands of lives. Just think about it, without them, we are probably not at school now. Lives would be the way it was with Covid and more people would lose their jobs.

9

International Women's Day is truly a day that we should celebrate to show that gender. The story about Karikó and her team talks about how women can also accomplish things that are done by men. And everyone can contribute to a brighter future in one way or another.

ASAC Swim Meet

Written by Ishan Verma Designed by Nhim

We all know swimming is a sport that helps us keep fit. It is also one of the few sports which was very difficult, if not impossible, to do at home. Last month, I had the chance to take photos of our swim team who were competing in their first-ever swim meet of the academic year! It was the ASAC Virtual Swim Meet, in which our swimmers participated within their gender and age bracket against swimmers from other schools under the ASAC affiliation.

It was a joyful experience seeing the swimmers perform to the best of their calibre and put up competitive times even with little practice. Slowly but surely, sports are making a comeback at AIS, and students couldn’t be happier with the opportunity to showcase their talents.

It was also a special moment for one of my friends, and an expert in his field, Luke Gillin, who had a brilliant outcome, coming first in all his events.

ATS University Fair

WRITTEN BY LIAM EVANS DESIGNED BY KATHY TRAN

On the 24th of February, AIS hosted its annual ATS (Avenue To Success) Fair, where students from years 10 to 13 were able to discuss tertiary education with representatives of many high-profile Australian universities. This was a great chance for students to learn about the courses, scholarships offered, the application process, and the overall life as a student in Australia. 20 of Australia’s major institutions were represented, spanning six of Australia’s states. An ATS bag was given to each student, containing the list of universities on offer, the layout of where to reach each university booth, and a passport designed to be filled up with signatures from the institution booths visited. This was in return for prizes such as movie tickets, teddy bears, tote bags, and other mini toys and accessories.

COVID Strikes Again! Written by: Zorba Hoang, designed by: Francesca Reyes

The number of COVID cases in HCMC, particularly at AIS, has experienced an unexpected rise. This resulted in students from several year groups reverting to the unpleasant experience of online-learning, which already had haunted us for months. Due to the significant number of school staff and students under quarantine, a decision was made to shift back to online school a week before the IGCSE and IB Mock exams, which were eventually postponed by a week as well. This was like a blessing in disguise as it allowed me to spend more time on revision. Transitioning to online learning also meant that I had more time to myself. I spent my time in the comfort of a velvet blanket, that was made more to be cuddled than to provide any sort of warmth. Instead of jolting awake to the early disturbing sound of the alarm clock, I had more time to indulge myself in sweet morning slumbers, something that grew more and more of a luxury for me. The eight o’clock start of a school day dawned on me and I got ahold of the motivation to reimburse my rested brain with consciousness. Before I left my bed, I got done with all the mundanity that came with the act of waking up, and set myself firmly at the working desk, getting ready for eight periods of school that extended into the early afternoon. Online learning to me was and had always been a unique experience in that at some moment I felt as if I were stifled by hordes of humans and moments later was left utterly alone, only the tedious and foreboding lilac icon of Teams by my side.

All the mock exams quickly passed by, and with that, the efforts of me revising. It gave me, and I guess many of you readers also, the same hope to look forward to a safe-and-sound return to offline learning.

Take care and stay safe.

This month, we dive deep into the lives of a group of Year 12 students, who are fresh into the IB lifestyle. I got the opportunity to discuss and understand their recently concluded CAS project, which built its foundation from online learning but came into action in a physical school. Juhan Chang, Leo Bui, and Kim Doan, together started “The Paper Recycling Project”. They aimed to find a better outcome for all the spare, scrap, and used paper that we all used during Elearning.

Written by Ishan Verma

Designed by Minh Triet Vo & Kathy Tran

In conversation with the project leader, Juhan Chang, I learned that the idea came to him when he felt “guilty” of throwing away all the vast amounts of used paper that he collected during the period of E-learning. At first, he aimed to recycle it himself but later realized that there would be loads of other people in the same situation as him, as he set himself on an aim to collect as much paper as he possibly can. This allowed him to present his idea and bring it to life at school. Together the team joined up and advertised their project on notices, researched possible institutions that recycled paper, and set up a small station at school. In the end, The Paper Recycling Project ended up collecting a truly remarkable, 113 kilograms of paper. Upon reflecting on their project, they realized “It mainly was year 12s, 13s and the teachers who kept their used paper and donated it. It was challenging to involve young students merely by posting on the notices.”

If they were to do something similar, they would make it a house competition with prizes and also sort out the different types and sizes of paper.

Pride

The arrow zips under the snow-covered pines and hits its mark on an unexpecting wolf. As much as it

struggles, no amount of tussling could free the barbed projectile from its neck. What irony it is, the wolf comes out of its den to proclaim itself as the mightiest alpha, yet its howl brought it to death’s door.

“What a fool.” said the hunter.

The forests of Siberia are harsh enough on their own, let alone the dry cold winds that envelopes this winter wasteland. The hunter had not always been here, in the past he was but an orphan, roaming across the Union in hopes of finding shelter and food to live for another day. Through his aimless wandering, he eventually stumbled upon an old shed with a small glow inside. Curiosity overwhelmed him, and the smell of cooked meat enticed the malnourished boy to come in even more. Before the boy knew it, he was already gnawing on a rib close to the fireplace. Suddenly, the shed’s door burst open and the boy freezes in place.

“Why are you so still?” asked the stranger.

“Is it because of the cold?” the voice drew closer. “Or maybe…is it me?” and closer.

Frightened beyond belief, the boy slowly turned his head around, only to see a fox’s head hovering over his shoulders. He screamed in terror as the stranger chuckled. “You’re funny kid, it’s been a while since I had a good laugh.” Inspecting the shed more closely, the boy realize that the shed belonged to the stranger who was also an experienced hunter. “Tell you what, you give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. What say I teach you how to hunt and survive here? It’s better than working in the factory or being drafted into the army.”, offered by the hunter. With no other choice, the boy agreed, and the old hunter became his mother figure. Day after day, she honed his skills at archery as well as taught him the basics of survival skills. Cooking, filtering water, making fires, though the boy was small he was eager to learn and improve. Perhaps, a bit too eager at times. As he grew older, his arrogance slowly took shape and turned him into the pretentious hunter that he is today…. As he pulls the arrow out of the wolf’s neck, the hunter notices 2 other wolves nearby. Thinking he has struck gold, he charges in, firing an arrow before pulling out a knife to finish his prey. … The wolves sprint under the snow-covered pines and bite down on the unexpecting hunter. As much as he struggles, no amount of tussling could free the crushing jaws from his neck. What irony it is, the hunter comes into the forest to boast his skills, yet his pride brought him to death’s door.

This is a cat. A cat with gray, thick fur, named Alexander. However, he isn’t just any cat- he is

an ambitious, curious, confident cat who wishes to travel around the world. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to trod to many places in such a short time, because Alexander is a cat. But such disadvantages will not stop him- Alexander plans to hijack a boat, just like humans! He may not be able to communicate with them in words, but if some of the humans have a soft spot for animals, he might be able to make them into his personal human servants. Human servants weren’t that hard to get for any cat- go up to them, purr under their legs, and voila! You’ve earned yourself free food and water. Today was the day- Alexander was sat near the deck, watching humans come and go, observing their every move. Soon enough, a bigger boat was started to become filled by humans. This was his chance! Alexander, careful to not look suspicious, walked up to the boat. He hopped on without permission or effort, and started purring loud enough for a nearby human to hear. The humans seem to like him, but not the idea of Alexander traveling along with them. Furballs! His plan was failing! Still, no panic- Alexander had a backup plan in case of a situation.

Humans used strange, looking sticks to scoop up fish- maybe he could be proved worthy by catching a fish himself. They were hard to find near the deck due to the loud humans- but some fish were stupid enough to swim up to the surface. All Alexander had to do was to not fall in the water- He could easily drown. He wasn’t sure how deep the sea was, but other animals claimed that it was an endless abyss, not to mention how salty the water was. But Alexander wasn’t scared- it didn’t take him long to spot a good-sized fish. He carefully stalked it, getting close enough to make a kill. The moment the fish looked away; it was caught between the teeth of the gray cat. He had caught the fish- now he had to face the real challenge. Alexander would have to make it all the way back to the boat, with a live fish flopping in his jaws. The salty water was annoying enough- but the fish was also stronger than what he had anticipated. Still, he managed to show the fish to the humans. Never in his life did he think he would have to prove himself to humans, now here he was. The stupid humans seemed interested in his catch- and he was not chased away this time. He had made it onto the boat! But this was the beginningAlexander’s journey around the world had only just started.

Krampus

Krampus moaned as he nibbled the head off his little chocolate version of himself. How did this

happen? He pondered. I used to be something to be feared and dreaded. People were afraid of me. I was a staple story that mums used to tell their children if they misbehave and that I will drag them down to the underworld while they were writhing in pain. But, for decades, the stories were wiped from history. Forgotten. “It was all because of the damn church and those cultists. It was too terrifying they said. It was too horrible they said.” And that was why Krampus had to hide in a freezing cave, to escape from the pursuit of the church, waiting for a day to be remembered and heard once more. And he was aware that the day would come. Stories of ghosts, devils and the cloaked man with horns were never forgotten.

So he waited patiently until the time became ripe, and it did. When Krampus heard his name being chanted again, he shook with delight. He'd cleaned up his chains and bells. He'd honed his teeth and polished his horns. He'd even purchased a bundle of twigs from a neighbouring woodsman. Krampus couldn't suppress his enthusiasm as the murmurs rose clearer and clearer until they became yells that etched his ears with pain. But he managed to keep his emotions under control. That is, until tonight when it is Krampusnacht. As the moon slowly rises in the distant horizon, Krampus raced out of his cavern with a thunderous roar, he inhales a big chunk of the crisp December air outside, and marched into town, baring his teeth and brandishing his bundle of birch twigs at everyone he saw. But no one was terrified. Nobody had yelled, trembled, or attempted to flee. Instead, they had jested, pointed, and photographed him with their phones. One child even presented him with a little chocolate duplicate of himself with a grin on his face. "I'll show them," Krampus grumbled as he ripped the replica's arm from its socket and swallowed it whole. Shoving the little chocolate Krampus' legs into his mouth, "They'll all be shivering in fear when they realize who Krampus is "Just give them some time." Devouring the rest of the chocolate. "I'll make sure they never sleep quietly in their beds again," he said. "But first," he continued as he licked his fingers, "I'm going to have to ask where to buy another one of these.” written by the winner of first-language divison: Kien Quoc "Benny" Nguyen

You know it, you love it, you’ve been sent unsolicited links of it: it’s time for the one and only “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley to make its appearance in our recommendations. The 80s dance-pop track has a history of notoriety, baiting and switching audiences since the earliest days of the internet. Nonetheless, the wave of 80s nostalgia by the likes of Dua Lipa and The Weeknd has cemented this cult classic’s rebound into the mainstream.
