Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) is a non-profit education association supporting the professional learning and school improvement strategies of international schools on the continent of Africa. Through our programmes and services AISA provides for the varying needs of nearly 27,000 students and over 3,000 teachers and school leaders in 73 member schools across 34 countries in Africa. Membership of AISA is open to elementary and secondary schools in Africa which offer an educational programme using English as the primary language of instruction and offer an international curriculum to suit the needs of its culturally diverse student body. Businesses and organizations who support the mission of AISA are also invited to join as Associate Members.

ABOUT AISA The Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA), established in 1969, is a non-profit education association supporting the professional learning and school improvement strategies of international schools on the continent of Africa. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, AISA offers a professional learning programme specifically designed to meet the unique needs of our diverse member school community. AISA also offers a number of supplementary programmes, scholarships and facilitates collaboration among member schools to advance school effectiveness and improve student learning.

AISA currently has a membership of 60 Full Member schools with an additional 13 Affiliate Member schools across 34 countries. Schools vary in size from less than 100 students to over 2,000. Some are nonprofit, others proprietary; some offer an American curriculum, others the British others the IB or a combination of all three. Together, these schools serve approximately 27,000 students supported by over 3,000 teachers.
AISA membership also includes some 80 Associate Members that are comprised of businesses, organisations and universities throughout the world whose primary mission is to serve the various needs of schools.

About AISA

AISA MEMBERSHIP Membership with AISA is open to elementary and secondary schools in Africa which offer an educational programme using English as the primary language of instruction and offer an international curriculum to suit the needs of its culturally diverse student body. Being a member of AISA means that you have immediate opportunities to strengthen your skills and capacities whether you are a school director, a middle school manager, a class teacher, early years educator or provide administration support. AISA membership seeks to foster mutual support and engagement across the AISA community and is a powerful tool for driving school improvement.
Full Member Schools Full members are international schools within the African continent who demonstrate: • An explicit reference to the promotion of internationalism in their mission • An international student body • An international teaching body • An international curriculum with a breadth of effective best practices • Achievement of accreditation or authorization by a recognized agency outside the host country
Affiliate Member Schools Affiliate members are international schools within in the African continent who demonstrate: • An explicit reference to the promotion of internationalism in its mission • An international student body • An international teaching body • An international curriculum with a breadth of effective best practices • A commitment to achieving accreditation or authorization by a recognized agency outside the host country within 5 years Essentially, our affiliate schools reflect the same characteristics of full member schools, the only difference being that they are yet to gain full accreditation by an AISA recognised accrediting agency. Before they can apply to AISA, affiliate member schools must demonstrate that they are already in the process of gaining accreditation, which once gained will enable them to move to full member status. Affiliate member schools do not have voting rights, nor are they eligible to apply for AISA awards or scholarships.
Associate Membership Associate Membership is available for, businesses, and organizations who support the mission of AISA. Associate members include publishers, education service providers, education suppliers, education software companies, insurance and travel providers and universities.

OUR PROGRAMMES AND SERVICES AISA focuses on supporting the development of services and resources in four key target areas; child protection, service learning, professional learning and SchooLink. During the 2015/16 academic year AISA will add a fifth area of focus – good governance. These programme areas were identified by the AISA Board as critical areas of strategic importance for schools in the AISA region.
AISA & Professional Learning The AISA Professional Learning Working Group (PLWG), Vision for AISA Professional Learning established in 2014, is a team AISA is dedicated to developing a consisting of teachers as well culture where professional learning as those with responsibility improves student learning. for professional learning in their school. The PLWG acts as an advisory group for AISA on the professional learning needs of our member schools. Members of the PLWG come from a broad range of school types and sizes, with each African sub-region represented, to ensure that a broad spectrum of professional learning needs and topics are captured. The group works to ensure AISA’s professional learning programme is needsbased, challenging and differentiated. Key services provided by the PLWG include: • Identifying professional learning needs of teachers, school leaders and co-professionals; recognising that all those working in schools contribute to school effectiveness and school improvement • Creating and promoting a varied professional learning programme including face-to-face, online and blended learning options to suit the schedules of busy educators • Facilitating the delivery of AISA’s Professional Learning Institutes, all of which are held in AISA member schools • Advising on the programme agenda for the AISA Leadership & Educators Conferences as well as devising opportunities for participants to explore new ideas and practices for learning at our annual conferences • Supporting the development of a professional learning network across the AISA community that will facilitate the sharing of ideas and foster greater collaboration Key resources developed by the PLWG: • Professional Learning Programme Concept Note: A framework for high impact professional learning at AISA
Scholarship Opportunities To further support the professional learning needs of staff in member schools, AISA offers a number of annual scholarships to high quality programs that are tailored to meet the professional development needs of targeted work functions within a school. SchooLink AISA SchooLink provides participating member schools with a reliable and secure Learning Management System, using an open source Moodle platform, which provides: • a blended learning platform - allowing for the combination of internetbased resources and activities to be integrated into the daily practices of teaching and learning • a collaboration platform - allowing participating schools to work on joint projects and share valuable open educational resources • an emergency platform - allowing schools to sustain their academic programme even if access to the campus is not possible SchooLink also connects technology directors, facilitating greater collaboration and ideas exchange throughout the AISA community. AISA SchooLink is part of the World Virtual School Project (WVS).
AISA & Child Protection The AISA Child Protection Working Group (CPWG) was established in 2013 to provide an impetus and much needed support for all AISA member schools (and international schools more broadly) to embrace Child Protection as an essential responsibility of the school in their community. The goal of the CPWG is to support schools to build and maintain a proactive environment that safeguards children by either preventing child abuse before it occurs or by ensuring its earliest possible detection, intervention and reporting. Key services provided by the CPWG include: • Awareness raising on the vital importance of child protection and the roles and responsibilities of every member of staff • Developing an open source resource bank that would enable schools to strengthen child protection systems and capacities • Develop a network open to all staff of member schools that would foster collaboration, facilitate resource sharing and dissemination of good practice • Provision of consulting services to the AISA community • Train schools how to strengthen Child Protection systems through regularly scheduled AISA Professional Learning Institutes • Ensuring emerging best practices from around the world are reviewed and incorporated as appropriate in AISA schools Key resources developed by the CPWG include: • AISA Child Protection Handbook – Provides the context and rationale for the creation of a child protection framework, guidance for the development of policies and procedures; links to curriculum resources; and suggestions for connecting to local, national, and international resources dedicated to the legal, investigative, social service and advocacy needs of abused and neglected children and their families. • AISA Model for Adult Education on Child Protection – Guidelines and resources to help schools develop effective prevention interventions that focus on the adults in our school communities. • Building And Using Multidisciplinary Teams to Safeguard Children in AISA Schools – Guidelines on how to develop multidisciplinary teams, including external partners, as part of a comprehensive child protection school programme. AISA & Service Learning
AISA-GISS
The AISA Service Learning Working Group (SLWG), established in 2013, is comprised of seven to nine members from AISA full member schools. The SLWG serves as an advisory body to the Executive Director and supports the development of meaningful, authentic service learning programmes throughout the AISA community.
AISA-GISS is a three day annual summit hosted by an AISA member school. The summit is designed to bring together a cohort of youth from around the African continent that enables them to share ideas, build relationships, and be empowered as change agents in their schools, communities and the world. The Global Issues Service Summit has become a calendar highlight for many of our AISA member schools as students are awakened to the notion that they can make a difference as they work together to consider and develop solutions for Global Issues.

AISA SCHOOL SUPPORT SERVICES AISA also offers a number of other services that member schools may wish to access from time to time, these school support services include:
Visiting Author Programme The AISA Visiting Author programme is a very practical way in which schools can work collaboratively to implement a programme that will be of benefit collectively as well as for each individual school. Due to the high cost of international travel to Africa, for many schools in the AISA region bringing out an international author is prohibitively high. The Visiting Author Programme enables schools within a sub-region of Africa to jointly engage an author that will spend up to a week in each school. AISA provides funding to the

schools which significantly reduces the travel cost burden on each school, ensuring that our students still receive the benefits and inspiration that these authors provide.
School Exchange Programme
“We believe such experiences enhance our library and literacy curriculum by helping to develop our students’ writing skills as well as their appreciation of literature. The AISA School Exchange Programme provides support for two schools wishing to collaborate, share specialist expertise and exchange learnings. The programme sponsors the round trip transport costs (air/overland ticket) for a visiting leader, administrator or teacher from one AISA member school to travel to another, thereby fostering greater collaboration and jointlearning within our community. In the past, this programme has been used to support middle and senior leaders, librarians, and IT staff.
Traumatic Incident Management Support All AISA member schools work hard to ensure that they provide a safe, nurturing environment for their students. AISA has also been supporting the strengthening of child protection policies and systems in our schools by developing resources and guidance that promote school best practice on safeguarding students. However, from time to time, there are incidents that occur within the locality of our schools that are outside of the schools control, but which can adversely affect our school communities. Traumatic incidents in AISA schools can be broadly defined as events that: • cause sudden and/or significant disruption to the operation or effective operation of a school and/or community • have the potential to affect a large number of children, young people and/or staff • create significant dangers or risks to the physical and emotional wellbeing of children, young people or persons within a community • attract media attention or a public profile for the school as a result of these incidents. (Examples of traumatic incidents may include; terrorist attack, coup d’etat, civil unrest, war, communicable disease outbreak, natural disaster). AISA is available to work closely with the school to manage the incident and to reduce the possibility of further harm by assisting the school to continue its day-to-day operations, providing counselling support and training opportunities for staff to develop a school-based Traumatic Incident Plan. Ideally schools should develop a Traumatic Incident Plan before an incident occurs. Through its network of traumatic incident consultants AISA can assist schools with the preparation of policies and traumatic incident planning. AISA can also provide access to funds to have counsellors travel to schools where incidents have occurred in order to offer counselling to children, staff and parents.

AISA will take the following steps to support schools in the development of a school-based Traumatic Incident Plan. 1. AISA will run regular Traumatic Incident Response Plan workshops to enhance the capacity of schools to develop Traumatic Incident Response Plans and Teams. 2. AISA will encourage the regular review of the Traumatic Incident Response Plan by staff who have been designated as part of the traumatic incidence response team at the school. 3. AISA will encourage schools to ensure all staff are familiar with the response action plan and know what to do in the event of a traumatic incident.
Consultant Pool Programme The AISA Consultant Pool Programme provides advisory, logistical and financial support to member schools requiring on-site consultant services to meet their school improvement plans. AISA maintains a pool of vetted, high calibre consultants able to deliver targeted professional development or management consultancy services that will meet the specific needs of the participating school. Schools that have utilised this service in the past have included governance training, technical services and business management support.

THE AISA TEAM Dr Peter Bateman, Executive Director
Born in Australia, Dr. Peter Bateman has worked in the education sector in Africa for the past 25 years during which time he has developed a particular interest in supporting differentiated approaches to supporting Professional Learning for international educators. Having been an educator and administrator in International schools, Peter also has an interest in developing and facilitating online Communities of Practice that enable collaboration. Peter holds a PhD in Education (UK), a Masters Degree in Micro Technology in Education (UK), a Bachelor of Education Degree (Australia), and a Post Graduate Diploma in Online Instruction (USA). He was recently selected to participate in the Leadership for the 21st Century program at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Graham Watts, Director of Professional Learning
Graham is an educational writer, advisor and consultant with experience of leading professional learning in over 25 countries. He has published educational books in the UK and the USA as well as publishing articles and peer reviewed papers in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. Before joining AISA, Graham was Global Director of Education and Training for an international children’s wellbeing charity; forming strategic partnerships with major funders, research partners, government agencies and universities. In his spare time Graham enjoys theatre, cinema, art galleries and exhibitions and enjoying all that life in London has to offer!
Steve Muthiitene, Executive Assistant & Events Coordinator
Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Steve obtained a Masters in Strategic Management from the United States International University (USIU), Kenya, and a Bachelors in Commerce from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Prior to joining AISA Steve worked in the banking and finance industry and also as a research analyst with a strategy and management consulting firm. In his spare time Steve enjoys travelling, being around children and music – creating it, listening and dancing to it.
Connie Munene, Finance & Administration Coordinator
Prior to joining AISA in 2009, Connie worked with Zain, a mobile telecommunications company and MicroLAN Kenya an information technology company, providing technical, marketing and financial inputs. Connie holds a Bachelor of Science from Nairobi University and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Barnabas Suva, Office Administrator
Barnabas was appointed the Office Administrator in 2013 after serving as a Teaching Assistant in the International school of Kenya (ISK) for five years. Barnabas holds a Teaching Assistant Diploma and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (ICPAK). He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration at the United States International University (USIU), Africa. Barnabas is passionate about international education, and is thus very proud to be serving the AISA community.
Chanel Ryall, Partnerships & Communications Coordinator
An Australian, Chanel has spent the best part of the previous 10 years living and working overseas, moving first to Cambodia, then New Zealand and now Kenya. Passionate about social justice her career has been spent in the non-profit sector working in both small and large organisations, primarily in the areas of programme management, communications and organisational leadership.
