Back At It!
When David Colman was a student at John Bapst, he had no idea what lay in his future. He did know, however, that he had ideas about what he wanted to do and even as a high school senior he knew to exhaust the resources around him –technology was not in the John Bapst curriculum in 1957 so David pursued (after graduating from John Bapst) technology training at another high school.
After finishing that training, he kept following his passion and built a life around creativity, technology, and entertainment decades before the rest of the world embraced those same things.
He may not have thought of himself as a visionary, but he led
a visionary’s life.
You’ll read about his remarkable life in the following pages. He is remembered here for his distinctive career but also by his brother and sister who have honored his legacy with a gift to the school that will help
the growing and innovative technology department that is now a major curricular area for the school.
John Bapst is different these days. We have built a school around embracing the visionary in each of our students. Between
a flexible, rigorous, and creative curriculum and innovative programs like the Distinguished Graduate Program, our studentfounded clubs, our participation in independent research areas, and our willingness to use independent studies, we find many ways to listen to the visionary in each of our students.
We give them the academic tools they need, but also the interpersonal tools and confidence to make it work –even if their goals are not exactly within our coursework. David would be proud of this school and we are proud and honored to be a part of his legacy.

At the age of 14, Antionette started an entrepreneurial venture with her creative balloon art business, Pippy’s Poppin Balloons. The idea initially came from when she designed and built balloon arches for her middle school dances. She went on to become the youngest certified balloon artist in America. After receiving her certification and retail license from the state of Maine, Antionette began decorating the VIP tent of the Waterfront Concert Series.
Antionette has successfully rebuilt her business after Covid-19 and now, with a national reputation and a federal trademark, it is her intention to continue expanding her business throughout her senior year and upcoming college career.
Meanwhile, twin sister Natalie has been pursuing setting her own bar and was the only rising junior accepted in the Jackson Laboratory’s academic year fellowship program.
Around Campus
At Jackson Lab Natalie has been doing research, analyzing data, and helping design experiments. Her work was presented at the Maine State Science Fair and won first place in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category. Natalie also contributed to a paper published in the journal “Frontiers in Immunology,” in which she was named second author. Following her success at the Jackson Laboratory, Natalie is continuing her scientific journey as an intern at the University of Maine at Orono, while completing her senior year at John Bapst.
Did you know that John Bapst has nearly 40 clubs and activities, attracting hundreds of our students?
One such club is the Crusader Chess Club, John Bapst’s competitive chess team. So far, 14 students have competed at four events in Maine, earning three section wins and several trophies.
The Crusader Chess Club has taken home the title of State Co-champion at the Maine Team Scholastic Chess Championship, (it’s regularly within striking distance of the top spot every year) and is a two-time winner of the Claude E. Webber Memorial Cup (2019 and 2021). And, since 2017, the Crusader Chess Club has sent two nominees to the US Chess Scholastic Invitational Championships: the WIM Ruth Haring National Girls’ Tournament of Champions in Norfolk, Virginia, and the GM Arnold Denker
Tournament of High School Champions in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
The club meets twice a week for instruction and practice and endeavors to help students realize their own levels of chess excellence at US Chess rated competition in Maine and beyond.
A first as John Bapst holds graduation at Bangor’s Cross Insurance Center
Breaking from tradition for the second time in two years (due to Covid restrictions), the school held the Class of 2022 commencement at Cross Insurance Center on Main Street in Bangor. Though not in the historic school auditorium, the event was a wonderful celebration of 146 seniors and featured the school band. Graduating were 23 seniors from six foreign countries, joining their counterparts hailing from over 20 different Maine towns. The featured guest speaker was Yellow Breen who imparted wisdom and wit on the assembled guests and graduates. Co-Valedictorians Jacob Levesque (Orrington) and Uyen Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh) and Co-Salutatorians Caleb Canders (Brewer) and Olivia Rand (Hampden) also spoke. The new venue allowed for unlimited guests (nearly 1,000 attended), and comforts such as air conditioning and unobstructed views.

A New Tradition
Ann Largay Bergeron ‘92 celebrates winning tickets to a Waterfront Concert.
The school held its first weekend-long celebration of alums, “Back to Bapst!” July 23-25, 2022. Replacing several smaller events throughout the year, Back to Bapst! gave alums and friends the opportunity and freedom to plan around several activities to reconnect with schoolmates and faculty. The weekend included an evening free for classes to hold their own events and another reserved for the annual alumni gathering; it also featured a first time familycentered event with games, food, and fun for parents and kids.
The 2023 “Back to Bapst! “ weekend is already being planned for July 21-24. Our alumni gathering will be Friday, July 21 and Saturday will offer daytime activities that are family friendly. Sunday July 23 will be the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony and luncheon while Monday, July 24 will conclude the weekend with the 13th annual golf tournament. Mark your calendar now!

The stars appeared at the Athletic Hall of Fame induction luncheon
This year’s Athletic Hall of Fame was quite special, featuring legendary Coach Ken Perrone and his 1965 football team (pictured above) and three individual standout athletes, Nick Caparelli ’62, Bob Bolduc ’67, and Gus Ciano ’66 (pictured left to right). In addition to the inspiring reflection given by Coach Perrone, Nick Caparelli shared a few thoughts, citing that “I learned to persevere at John Bapst,” while Bob Bolduc offered deep appreciation for the distinction of being inducted. Gus Ciano was unable to join in person but was enthusiastically celebrated by his schoolmates. Also in attendance were Jackie Hodgins Caiola ’67 and Fran Hurley Kelly ’66, members of the cheerleading squad that supported the ’65 team.

The robotic magic of David Colman ‘57
“Good speaker.”
“Good natured.”
“Sociable and cooperative.”
“Earnest student.”
“Thoughtfulness at all times.”
These were terms used to describe the late David Colman in his 1957 John Bapst yearbook. The second of three siblings who attended John Bapst, it is no surprise that David’s older brother Ron ’56 and sister Sally ’64 could be described as inspirational, selfless, and generous. Ron and Sally are proudly honoring their brother’s memory by securing the acquisition of a new building at 234 French Street that will serve as the school’s new technology center. While Ron and Sally lost their brother in 1995, they always knew that they wanted a special way to pass on their brother’s love for innovation, creativity, and challenging himself. David Colman was certainly a man ahead of his times, a true visionary.
David started his career as a professional skater with the Ice Capades and the Ice Follies. Later, he formed a business, The Robot Factory, in Cascade, Colorado. He may have been far from his hometown of Brewer, Maine but ingenuity and innovation followed him throughout his adult life. His first creation, Commander Robot I, was an ice-skating robot made of aluminum and plexiglass. Commander’s main mission was to skate swiftly across the ice while performing acrobatic stunts to entertain those at the show. Audiences were delighted. Engineered by David, two motors drove Commander, whose
operator steered him along a wavy trajectory by speeding up one motor or slowing down the other. If one of the motors is running in forward, the other in reverse, the robot spins in tight circles. David’s later creations included a whole family of ice-skating robots: creeping worms, pesky bugs, and warm “fuzzies”, each with its own playful personality. Commander I was nearly 8 feet tall, but David’s “worms” skittered across the ice at a height of only 3 or 4 inches. They were made of green urethane foam, with cute faces dominated by smiles. David and his creations appeared at national conventions and on network television, he even appeared on the Merv Griffin show. One of his favorite robots was stolen, but the thief soon brought it back. Evidently, he couldn’t figure out how it worked!
Fast forward to present day and how far modern day technology has come and it is not difficult to see how a visionary like David contributed to it - the fun antics of David’s promotional robots delighted millions, and as the years passed, inspired many young robot fans and aspiring creators. Today, Colman’s sense of fun, inventiveness, and desire to entertain takes a new path at John Bapst. If David were here today, he would undoubtedly be impressed with the success of the technology department at John Bapst, and in particular, the Robotics Program. Over the past decade or so the school’s robotics teams have traveled to national competitions and ranked highly with opponents from all over the world. The new technology center, which will house a maker space, classroom space, and a museum featuring some of David’s robots, is a fitting tribute to a man who was ahead of his time – a true artist, innovator, and visionary.
8 THE ROUND TABLE WINTER 2022-23 JOHNBAPST.ORG Technology / THE ROUND TABLE
David drew inspiration for his radio-controlled robot while fixing props backstage for the Ice Follies where he once skated.
Colman once told producers of Ice Follies, “I’m going to build a robot.” And during auditions he introduced Ralph Roger Robot. But, Colman said, “I didn’t know what to make him say.” That soon ended. Ralph was always full of patter, whether on the Johnny Carson, Steve Allen, or Merv Griffin shows, or promoting a famous hamburger chain or an airline.
David credits his work with the Universal and Nike Ajax missle systems while in the Army, along with his National Cash Register work, with giving him his mechanical knowhow. Work in NBC, CBS, and ABC special effects departments helped too. “They’d call for the craziest things. The designer would draw, I’d build.”
David built over 30 robots. Some are like beach balls, some like animals. Some are like R2D2 of Star Wars, although Colman’s were radio-controlled while Star Wars robots had people in them.
He travelled to trade shows where he marketed Harry on his trike or his jazzy piano playing brother and some of his friends. Kids loved them.

Sister Rosemary, (Rosemary Harrison ‘62) celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60 years) as a Sister of Mercy. In September 1962, she entered the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy after graduating from John Bapst. Sister Rosemary enjoyed a long and successful career of over 40 years as an elementary school teacher in the parochial schools of the Diocese of Portland.
Today, Sister Rosemary volunteers in the Portland area.
Reginald McManus, MD ‘48 and family members visited the Kathleen Flanagan McManus House (the girls’ dorm) recently, presenting the
school with a beautiful portrait of Kathleen Flanagan McManus ‘48.
The artwork will hang in the house, reminding students of the importance of determination, a trait that Kathleen lived by. The portrait was created by Janice Baragwanath.
A family affair
Iremember the time distinctly. It was 1980. Growing up in Orrington, Maine and going to Center Drive School, I was trying to decide where I would go to high school. And I had choices.
Did you know that nine of our board members are also graduates of our school?
We shared five of them in the Spring edition of The Round Table. Here are four more.
I had an entire generation before me that had attended John Bapst. I heard the stories from my mother and many aunts and uncles who had gone to Bapst in its heyday in the forties and fifties - the stories of football games against Bangor and Brewer, basketball games at the Bangor Auditorium (the old, old auditorium), the coffee parties, winter carnivals, spring musicals, the glee club performances...I heard it all.
I thought my choice was made for me when the Diocese of Portland made the decision to close John Bapst. Fortunately there were people like Earle Hannigan, Joe Sekera, Bill Lindsey, and Col. John MacKay who saw the importance of the school for the community and high school education in the greater Bangor area. They had the foresight and the intestinal fortitude to push forward and reopen the school just a few short months after it was closed. I know they each took a tremendous personal and financial risk had the venture failed. I see each of them as heroes.
I went to step-up day at Brewer and John Bapst during my eighth grade year. I wanted a great education to make me desirable in college admissions and I wanted to play competitive sports (in high school and beyond). After each visit I went home and listed the positives and negatives of each school, but there was only one real choice--John Bapst. I was so impressed after the visit that I
announced my decision to my parents. They were a little skeptical because of the shaky financial footing that Bapst was under at the time, worried the school may fold during my tenure and I would have to change schools. However they both supported my decision. The rest is history. I matriculated in the fall of 1981 and graduated in 1985.
Sports have always been very important to me and I wasn’t sure about the athletic program at Bapst – with the closing and reopening, no one knew what that meant for sports. Things went just fine: while I never won a state championship at Bapst, I did play in two Eastern Maine Basketball Tournaments at the Bangor Auditorium. My senior year we finished first in the Heal Point standings and entered the Eastern Maine Basketball Tournament ranked #1. I also played in two Eastern Maine baseball playoffs, reaching the Eastern Maine semifinals in my senior year.
From Bapst I went on to graduate from the University of Vermont in 1989, where I played Division 1 college baseball for the Catamounts, and then I graduated from University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1996.
Presently I practice medicine in Greenville, SC. When I look back on my high school choice and ask myself, ‘did I make the correct decision?’ the answer is clear – yes, I did!

Meet the Abbott family and follow their multigenerational path at John Bapst.
First, in 1928, it was John Bapst High School. Then, in 1980, it became John Bapst Memorial High School. Over the years and through the changes, our school has witnessed many students pass through its doors and down its hallways. Some have come alone, the first member of a family enrolled. Others have come joining brothers or sisters already here. Still others have come, following mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles long graduated. Upon arrival, they may have attended classes on a boys’ side or a girls’ side. They might have met others coming from towns well beyond Bangor or countries well beyond our own. Regardless of how and why and from whence they came, all quickly were unified as part of the John Bapst community, a community that lasts well beyond graduation.
