’Tis the Season – But It’s Always the Season for Music at John Bapst

O

ne floor below my office, Concert Band director Julie Ewing and 100 student musicians are dashing through “Sleigh Bells” one more time, tuning up for the annual Holiday Concert. Music is in the air and in the halls – just one feature that makes the old building at 100 Broadway a special place.

In my eight-plus years at John Bapst one thing has puzzled me. Where do all of these extraordinary musicians come from? This past October, Nate Lesser, who left John Bapst after his junior year in 2008 to attend Oberlin Conservatory and then went on to get his master’s in violin performance from Yale, returned to school. As part of Solo and Ensemble Night, Nate played an excerpt from Bach’s Chaconne in D minor – one of the most challenging pieces in the solo repertoire. Nate lingered on the lyrical passages, ripped through the runs and arpeggios, and just stunned the audience.

“Is there any more inspiring area for a young musician?“

I don’t mean to single out only Nate Lesser. When I arrived in 2007, Kristyn Murphy ’08, a John Bapst senior and the self-styled “Barefoot Soprano,” was releasing her second or third album. The next year John Frankland ’09 was tuning up his cello for the music program at Gettysburg College, and Andrew Babbitt ’11 was staking his claim to Best Male Vocalist as a freshman when he sang the role of the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Rose Upton ’13 – also the feature of several CD’s – opened a school assembly with an Italian aria. The student audience – not exactly known for its devotion to opera – erupted in a standing ovation.

The best young jazz pianist I’ve ever heard, Charlie Volkwein ’12, came to John Bapst from Blue Hill. I once told singer Stephanie Colavito ’14, a consummate Broadway stylist who never hit a bad note, that her version of the national anthem before a football game was better than anything I’d heard at Fenway Park or seen before a Super Bowl. For four years, Denver Powell ’15, now a student at Berklee College of Music, and Charlie Hanscom ’15, who starred in productions not only at John Bapst but at Penobscot Theatre, serenaded their classmates with show tunes, pop music, R&B, and rock. Under vocal director Al McIntyre's guidance, the dynamic duo of Lily Muscatell ’15 and Lanie Reid ’18 took their country originals to America’s Got Talent.

Where does it all come from? Is there any more inspiring area for a young musician than eastern Maine, home to brilliant teaching professionals in every genre? It’s a crossroads of influences, and it’s full of festivals and recording studios, including Husson’s New England School of Communication. And with its own talented, creative teachers and constant opportunities to perform, John Bapst itself plays a part in contributing to this musical richness. What a great place to grow up – what a great place to go to school!

New Distinguished Graduates Program Adds Enrichment, Personalization

t’s not every day that a high school student gets to contribute to the success of an innovative technology development company. Last year, John Bapst senior David Carmack was able to do just that as part of the new Distinguished Graduates Program.

When the program was implemented for the 2014-15 school year, Carmack saw an opportunity to complement his education and get some real-world experience in the process.

He approached his chemistry teacher, Mary Lammert, for help in applying to the program and in finding an organization willing to take on a student researcher.

Lammert gave him the name and contact information of Susan MacKay, Ph.D., owner and co-founder of Cerahelix. MacKay is also the parent of Lydia, co-valedictorian in 2015, and Stuart ’17, and a member of the school's board of trustees.

Cerahelix, a local company with a broad vision, creates energy-saving membrane technology to filter water. The target is industries using large amounts of water, including oil and gas companies, the food industry, and biorefineries. Ultimately, the

goal is to enable more water to be recycled, reducing the water footprint of manufacturing processes.

The technology is innovative. A thin coating of DNA and ceramic is applied to a commercially available ceramic support to create a material with transverse channels. The DNA is removed in the final step, leaving behind a pore structure that allows for filtration at the nanoscale. As a result, the patented Cerahelix filter, the Pictohelix, is capable of providing ten times higher purity than any ceramic filter on the market today.

Carmack was asked to help in researching ways to prepare the DNA. He recalls that on his first day he was “excited but very nervous.” But his nervousness didn’t last long; “the people at Cerahelix were great, very easy to work with.”

Working under the direction of Dr. Karl Bishop, co-founder of Cerahelix, Carmack tested multiple methods of efficiently shearing DNA using a nebulizer.

It was a hands-on process, and Carmack was directly responsible for every step. He made samples, set up gel, and performed a process called electrophoresis used to separate macromolecules of DNA based on size – a common process in

any lab dealing with molecular biology.

Carmack stained the samples with laboratory dye, then examined them under a microscope to draw preliminary conclusions.

The full cycle, from sample creation to analysis, took about three days. He repeated it over and over, using different DNA shearing techniques each time.

Like any researcher, Carmack kept careful notes of his findings. At the end of the Distinguished Graduates Program, he wrote a paper and created a poster board summarizing his research. That’s the same method research scientists use to share their knowledge with peers in the field. Though still in high school, Carmack was getting a first-hand look at the inner workings of the industry.

“It’s very important for high school students to get real-world experience,” Susan MacKay says. “You come out of school and you don’t have a big perspective on the jobs that are out there. That’s a problem the Distinguished Graduate Program is helping to correct. And it doesn’t just benefit the students involved. It supports the success of all science, technology, engineering, and math industries by providing skilled, prepared workers.”

STEM professionals are in high demand, with STEM jobs comprising 20% of all U.S. jobs, according to the STEM Education Coalition. By 2020 the job market will need more than one million new STEM workers.

Carmack may become one of those workers. He is now a freshman at Notre Dame, where he is studying biochemistry and applied and computational math and science. Though he’s not certain what he wants to do with his degree, he knows that he’ll most likely end up in a STEM job.

No matter what he does next, he believes that the Distinguished Graduates Program has given him the tools he needs to enter the STEM arena confidently, noting, “The whole experience helped me learn how to work in a lab, follow procedure, and think like a scientist.”

A model metropolis by Marcis Curtis

Restoring buildings and, in a way, people, through community activism, seems both very challenging and very rewarding.

Largely what we’re doing is bringing back American trades. My partner and I both had the benefit of college degrees, but after the 2008 crash there were no jobs. We’re really focused on trying to create jobs. But creating what I call a “community of compassion” is just as important to me.

Artists, political science majors, and idealists are often challenged to explain how their interests and skills translate into the real-world business of pursuing a career and making a life. We caught up with Marcis Curtis ’05, hoping to trace his journey from John Bapst to college and then to his present calling as co-founder of Citizen Carpentry, a workshop and design studio in St. Louis.

Just ten years out of high school, Marcis has created a fascinating professional and artistic niche for himself.

Let’s start with the present. What kind of projects is Citizen Carpentry engaged in these days?

We often work with a time bank called the Cowry Collective, where our resource pool and currency is measured in hours rather than cash. This network is great for us in that everyone is entering into a social contract of sorts. If you have a skill and are willing to share it, you can get a lot in return without spending a dime. We just wrapped up a custom bookshelf installation. One of the members of the time bank pointed the customer our way.

We sourced as much of the lumber as we could locally. The challenge was to match an existing mantel and stain.

My partner did the design, and I took care of work flow.

Philosophically, what has inspired your creative approach to carpentry, design, and art?

We’re hoping the work will inspire people to take a closer look at the built environment. In sharing skills and pointing people towards the option of using recycled, salvaged, or more sustainably harvested materials, we hope to blur the lines of production and consumption and spread knowledge laterally. To work in this field is to reconnect with the manufacturing and building industries that made America what it is, and these jobs are always in demand and are highly rewarding. We’re a part of a new American movement dedicated to reinvigorating local and alternative economies by investing thoroughly in our community and divesting ourselves from companies, causes, and policies that unfairly discriminate. We are dedicated to compassionate, environmentally responsible business practices that prioritize humanity over profit and the importance of protecting our planet for future generations.

In high school, what were your interests and influences?

I can credit a near fluency in Spanish with my experience with Señora Swanton and her playful, narrativefocused, conversational teaching style.

She really knew how to make the language come alive, and her commitment to students was a great model for what

it means to create an inclusive learning environment. In art, Mrs. Avery’s [now Ms. Burns’] encouragement for my burgeoning artistic sentiments was a big influence as well, and sometimes I think I should have taken her advice and gone to art school. Bill LoPotro in AP Biology was another teacher who sparked an enthusiasm for knowledge and lifelong learning that I carry with me all the time. His passion and enthusiasm in reconciling his deeply held religious beliefs with scientific theory without holding judgment or imposing either upon his students was impressive.

And outside the classroom?

I had the immense pleasure of being on the alpine ski team all four years at Bapst, and that experience has been one of the most positive and fun times of my life. We were fortunate to host a couple European exchange students that were very talented during my time at John Bapst, and skiing was a great way to connect with them. Being outside in the winter and testing the limits of my endurance, decision-making, and agility gave me a physical confidence and body awareness that is hugely helpful in my current line of work.

How did John Bapst prepare you for your work and mission?

The approach to life and the workload at Bapst did a lot to help me deal with real life. My time there made me realize the importance of intention and dedication to learning all the time. The foreign exchange program opened my eyes to what the rest of the world was like, and I think I always look for the bigger picture in ideas because of that.

The fact that everyone had to apply to get into the school meant that everyone that was there wanted to be there, more or less. That difference was crucial to me – something I think that often goes overlooked in the hype surrounding metrics and data. And the long days taught me about managing JOHNBAPST.ORG

And after John Bapst?

I went to Colorado College. But you know, we are often spoon-fed the idea that you must attend a four-year college after high school and then somehow jobs will fall in your lap. I think it would benefit everyone to slow down a bit and really assess what interests them on a fundamental level and how to make that happen for themselves….

My parents both went to school in St. Louis, and two of my college friends were from here. I visited them, rent was cheap, and I stuck around. Where I now live is a vibrant, diverse residential district.

How did you learn carpentry?

My dad is a hobbyist as well as a doctor, with a shop he’s been compiling for twenty years. I was always out there helping him build a boat or work on a project. Moving out here, I had access to an apartment that had limited space.

My dad, my brother Kyle, and I built a loft, adding four to five hundred square feet to the apartment, and I really enjoyed the process.

Since high school, what about you has changed – and what’s stayed the same?

My time growing up in Maine and attending Bapst gave me an openness of mind and instilled in me a need for service and compassion which I have been trying to put to use through my art and everyday interactions with people. My time in St. Louis has made me acutely aware of my privilege, and I am constantly looking to unravel and address the gaps in my experience and understanding.

Where is your art taking you these days?

I was always interested in reconfiguring things and building new things

“Engage in dialogue, engage in your community, in politics, in your food, in your relationships...” from anything I could find, but my work and life took a drastic turn following the police killing of Michael Brown on August 9, 2014. I was in the middle of the Community Arts Training Institute, a social justice and community organizing program through St. Louis’ Regional Arts Commission which many of my colleagues have gone through.

The rest of the world followed the Ferguson story through the news, but your response comes directly from your time in St. Louis. What has resulted from your collaboration?

Having been involved in the art scene and meeting many social changemakers in St. Louis, I was contacted by a few friends about constructing a memorial piece with a political message to be presented to the Ferguson Police Department. Seven of us decided to create a Mirrored Casket with a shattered top to show people that it could be anyone’s son

or daughter, and we would carry it in procession to the department to show them that in a world where that [kind of police response] is okay, it could be their sons or daughters. The casket was covered by many news outlets, and it traveled throughout the state over the following year to be exhibited alongside other artifacts and protest-related artwork. It has since been acquired by the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History to be opened in late 2016. This was definitely a transformative experience for me and redirected my efforts toward social justice, racial justice and equality, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Talk more about the message you want to convey.

I would love to continue this work on a broader scale, facilitating workshops to help people master the basic skills that allow us to transform our surroundings. For myself, once I learned these skills, I saw new potential everywhere, and I would hope to be able to give people that experience through sharing what I know. If there was a single theme for me that winds its way through my work, it would be the idea of raising the energy levels of people in whatever way possible.

I call this the Human Current, and I think it applies universally. People often talk about a state of flow in professional athletes when they are winning and the vibrancy of iconic cities and glow of passionate people.

These are all outward manifestations of the Human Current. It’s my mission in life to raise the level of that current in whatever I’m doing. So I guess the single message would be to engage.

Engage in dialogue, engage in your community, in politics, in your food, in your relationships, and wherever there is an opportunity to give energy to give it freely.

PASSIONATE PRESERVATION John Bapst's Phuong Ha Do works to preserve Vietnam's traditions in an exhibition at the National Museum of Vietnamese History

F

or a high school student, working to preserve an ancient Vietnamese puppetry tradition by helping to organize an exhibit at a major museum in Hanoi is not neccesarily easy to pull off. But that is exactly what Phuong Ha "Felan" Do has accomplished. Through her enchanting artwork, the John Bapst senior has brought fresh attention to Vietnam's water puppetry.

In organizing an exhibit at Hanoi's National Museum of Vietnamese History, Felan and friends photographed water puppeteers and chronicled how the wooden puppets were made. Felan created nearly 20 paintings and ceramics depicting the ancient art form. Generating great interest in Hanoi, Felan's work was covered on TV and in newspapers.

Portraying Felan, a magazine wrote that she "wants people to not only understand and pay more attention to history, but also have the right attitude to preserving traditions ."

Water puppetry has a long tradition in Vietnam. Puppeteers perform hidden behind a screen and standing in a pool of waist-deep water, making it appear as if the puppets are actually moving over the water.

The performances reference Vietnamese folk tales of harvest, fishing, and festivals in rural settings, much like stories told by grandparents to grandchildren. This fall, Felan's artwork is on display outside the International Program Office.

Filling the Gap

Two recent John Bapst graduates explore gap years and discover personal growth

ohn Bapst 2015 graduates Matt Norris and Diego Grossmann were both accepted to undergraduate programs, but they aren’t going – at least not yet. Like a rising number of students, Norris and Grossmann are taking a gap year. It’s an opportunity to expand their perspectives and gain practical experience.

“As much as I was itching to get to college,” Norris said, “I took a gap year because I was offered an incredible opportunity to develop myself and pursue one passion for a long period of time.”

Instead of matriculating, Norris packed his bags and headed to China.

With funding from the Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth, Norris is spending nine months in Beijing in an intensive, immersive study of Chinese language

and culture. The program provides merit-based scholarships with the stated goal of preparing American citizens to be leaders in a global Matt Norris world.

Diego Grossmann, from the same graduating class, is also globally focused.

His parents are from Venezuela, and while he grew up in the Diego Grossmann United States, Grossmann has traveled to half a dozen countries. “When I was little, I always thought I wanted to be an explorer,” he said.

He has traveled to France as a volunteer with World Wide Opportunities

on Organic Farms (WWOOF). He’ll be working with several farms through March 2016. During his travels he’ll contribute to the daily work of the farms while learning about sustainability and organic farming.

Grossmann will also get the opportunity to pursue his other passion – music. He plays the cello, guitar, and double bass. Grossmann wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to learn about music played in other countries. so one of his criteria when searching for a farm was that the farmer play music.

“There’s a lot more to being involved in the world of agriculture than just working on a farm or planting a few acres of vegetables,” Grossmann said.

“We need all sorts of people working for the same goal.”

Norris agrees. “Just about every aspect of this exchange brings experience useful to the future.” The demands of a 10-hour school day and few student freedoms have helped him grow in new directions. “I’m developing into a person who can withstand trials, better empathize, and support myself and others.”

Grossmann encourages students to jump bravely into the unknown. “Go for it. Why not?” he said. He tells a story about biking through Europe on his day off. He got lost and broke his bike. “The moon came out, and I smiled, thankful I could see… I remember laughing to myself, completely lost, but knowing I’d make it home.”

That may be the greatest benefit of the gap year – how it changes your thinking. Confidence, openness, and acceptance become a way of life because there’s no alternative. “That’s a positive change in me that I know will be a benefit throughout life,” Grossmann said.

Looking to the future Both young alumni also believe that their gap years will make them better students when they start college in

2016.

“Living in this foreign environment has truly made me appreciate the creativity and innovation of the American education system,” Norris said, “and specifically, my teachers at Bapst.”

When he starts at Yale, Norris plans to study linguistics and Chinese.

“I’m realizing how much I desire to focus [my] skills to help others.” He’s not sure exactly where his studies will take him. “I only know that I wish toempower others and inspire cross-cul-

tural communication to work toward a more cooperative future.”

When Grossmann returns to the U.S., he’ll be attending Bowdoin College to study ecology and agriculture.

“I think I really love the farm life. So working on farms around Europe for a year is really a way to reassure myself about just how much I really do love a life connected to the land,” he said.

Right now he’s most interested in sustainable development and anthropology, interests that could lead him almost anywhere.

“I want to learn more languages, experience more cultures, and see how I can help as many people as I can.”

I’d like to propose that success … is defined according to the individual. If these cords and medals and stoles are a part of your definition, great! To me they do represent hard work, passion, and drive – values in which we can all see validity. However, they are not the end-all. They do not define your worth as a person. And they certainly do not justify one person's superiority over another. Success has infinite manifestations.

Success can be just as much falling in love with nature as falling in love with the words of Hemingway. Success can be just as much perfecting your favorite banana bread as perfecting your GPA. Success can be raising a pet, fixing an ATV, playing hockey, loving others, serving mankind.

Success can even be failure. ... We often refuse to recognize the validity and the worth of failure; when things don’t go our way, we tend to cover up the situation or find embarrassment in it rather than embrace the situation and learn constructively from it. Failure, especially in high school, seems absolutely dooming, and I have seen many over the years – myself included – become panicked at the possibility of receiving anything but an A. Classmates lose sleep and tears over essay grades and will do anything – anything – to receive extra credit. At times, it seems that during our education we are driven by a fear of failure just as much as a desire for success. This truth seems counterproductive, as some failure in life is inevitable. As the author J.K. Rowling put it, “It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all.” ­ — Matt Norris, valedictory speech, June 2015

Fighting the fire on a cold February day.

ntering Joseph W. Sekera Auditorium today, you would have no idea that a fire burned the roof last February, resulting in damage that destroyed part of the ceiling and turned the balcony into a wading pool.

School was out for Winter Break when the fire started on February 18, 2015. Students and teachers, including band and chamber ensemble director Julie Ewing, were home enjoying their vacations when they got the news.

Many of them found out on Facebook.

“I heard the auditorium collapsed,” Ewing said. “I heard the ceiling was falling down. The stories were larger

than life.”

The auditorium, named in August 2011 after Joe Sekera, the former principal and teacher who led John Bapst's refounding effort as an independent school in 1980, is the center of the John Bapst community. Daily lunches, assemblies every seven days, theater productions, seasonal concerts, and graduations happen there. A dozen or so staff members had been in the building when the fire broke out. Ewing joined them on the sidewalk to watch the firefighters work the blaze. The building was cleared and staff were allowed back inside to collect their belongings.

“I was with them, so I got to go in

too,” Ewing said. “It was a wash of relief to walk in and see that the auditorium was 90 percent okay.”

Head of School Mel MacKay explained what had happened: “We were using a blow torch to clear a dangerous ice dam on the building’s exterior.

Behind the thick sheet of ice and the brick facing were old, dry timbers.”

Fire spread through the roof and into a storage closet in the science department. Eight fire engines from several towns responded to the call.

Hundreds of gallons of water had to be sprayed over the blaze, saturating the ceiling of the auditorium and filling the balcony floor.

Around the School much for the ceiling. A section collapsed, injuring John York of the Bangor Fire Department, who was working on the balcony below. York was transported out of the building by his fellow firefighters and treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Thankfully, in a matter of weeks, he was fully healed and back on the job.

By mid-afternoon – just hours after it was reported – the fire was out and the clean-up began. Contractors and volunteers came forward to help with repairs that afternoon.

Present throughout much of the day was Karl Ward, CEO of Nickerson and O’Day Constructors and a John Bapst parent and trustee. The company was putting up scaffolding before the firetrucks left. His team – which included professionals in roofing, carpentry, fine plaster work, and several other trades – worked around the clock for more than two weeks to repair the damage. “Our first objective was to make sure it’s safe and secure for school on Monday,” Ward told reporters from the Bangor Daily News the day after the fire.

The roof and ceiling were stabilized, and students were able to return to school as scheduled, the auditorium remaining closed.

During those weeks, dozens of workers from several companies completed repairs. A major project was the removal of the more than 2,000 gallons of water that had accumulated in the balcony.

To minimize damage to the historic plaster ceiling, small holes were drilled to let the water drain slowly.

“It drained for hours,” Ward recalled.

Workers repaired the roof and installed heat tape to help prevent ice from forming in the future. The intricate plaster work on the balcony was painstakingly restored.

through the crisis. On February 26 John Bapst chefs Seth Fowler '09 and Kenny Grover '00 and student ambassadors Casey Bartlett ’15, Julia Leslie ’15, and Mike Tormey ’15 served breakfast to 25 firefighters and staff members of the Bangor Fire Department. The students presented the firefighters with a giant card signed by students and staff.

On March 11 students and staff gathered in Sekera Auditorium once again.

After giving the repairs a round of applause, the school honored Bangor

Fire Chief Tom Higgins, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Dorr, and injured firefighter York with plaques recognizing their bravery and honorary varsity letters, conveying the thanks of the entire John Bapst community. Ward also received a token of appreciation from the school.

“When the chips are down, we learn again what a strong community we are,” MacKay said. “We also learn how many people love this old building at 100 Broadway.”

Alpine skiers balance more than just body weight

At John Bapst, the 2014-15 girls' alpine ski team trained and competed at the highest levels in Maine as state runners-up.

That included a 4th-place finish from Annina Breen '17 in the giant slalom and an 8th- place finish in the state slalom. As a result Breen became an eastern regional qualifier and won 3rd place at the giant slalom shootout at Black Mountain.

Welcome Aboard

New members of the John Bapst faculty and staff David Petito arrived from Qingdao, Bishop Connolly High School in Fall China to teach English as a Second Language. With a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College and professional experience in the U.S., China, and South America, David taught ESL at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington for many years.

Anna Brown returned to the

U.S. from Taipei, Taiwan, joining the English Deparment. Anna is an experienced AP (both English Literature and Language) and International Baccalaureate teacher. Before teaching in Taiwan, she taught in California, Germany, and Hawaii. She earned her bachelor's degree from Mills College, was a Fulbright Scholar in Germany, and earned her master's in education from Brown University.

Maria Picone has joined John

Bapst English Department. An experienced teacher from Massachusetts with bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston College, Maria taught English, including AP Literature, and served as curriculum coordinator at

Michael Dudley from the Sizer School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts has joined the Science Department.

Michael has experience teaching science, math, and engineering at small, innovative schools. He has sponsored innovation in the classroom and online, mentored new science teachers, and coached cross-country, debate, and chess. He earned his bachelor's in physics from UMaine-Orono.

Steve Adams has joined the Science Department. An adjunct faculty member in engineering at UMaine, Steve taught full-time at Central High School in East Corinth, Maine for the past several years. He earned a B.S. in microbiology and an MBA from New Mexico State University, was a scientist in the private sector, and more recently brought his experience to the classroom.

Tiffany Howard is John Bapst's new school nurse. With over seven years' experience in the field and much of her experience in the Emergency Department at St. Joseph's Healthcare, Tiffany is well prepared to treat the needs of the school's day and boarding students. An R.N., she earned her B.S. in nursing from UMaine-Orono, is certified in advanced life support and trauma, and lives in Hermon.

Before Thaxter Trafton was Maine's past Commissioner of the Deparment of Economic and Community Development or President of the ABA's Cleveland Cavaliers or Executive Director of Bangor's Bass Park, he was on the faculty at John Bapst (1961-65).

While here he taught history, business mathematics, and geography. He also coached varsity basketball and was an assistant track coach.

The Athletic Hall of Fame

Honoring the Greats

John Bapst inducts eight new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame “I can’t thank you enough – this means a lot to me,” longtime Massachusetts coach and John Bapst alumnus Tim Marcoulier told this year’s varsity and JV football squad at the weekly team dinner in the school’s Sekera Auditorium on October 8. Marcoulier echoed the sentiments of seven other Bapst notables inducted this year into the school’s hall of fame, all most deserving of their recognition.

The eight new members received their official plaques and accolades at the school’s Hall of Fame on October 9, 2015 at Husson’s Winkin Sports Complex.

Ronald Pooler

From the Class of 1947, Ronald “Rock” Pooler was honored as a fouryear football player and team scoring leader. Pooler was a member of the 1946 undefeated team. As a freshman at UMaine, he played football and was co-captain of the freshmen and JV teams. A teacher and administrator at 20 THE ROUND TABLE WINTER 2015/2016

Timothy Marcoulier

From the Class of 1965, Timothy Marcoulier played football his junior and senior years and ran track for three years. As former Bapst and Brewer coach Ken Perrone said, “Tim was the fastest kid in eastern Maine.”

He was a member of the 1963 Pine Tree championship football team, the 1964 state championship football team, and the Eastern Maine All-Star Team. In track, Marcoulier placed second in Maine in 1965 in the 100.

Upon graduation from UMaine in 1969, he served in the U.S. Army, receiving a Bronze Star and two commendation medals. Tim joined Ken Perrone at Salem High School, where they coached together for 22 seasons and where he taught for 35 years. In 1985 he was named the North Shore

Teacher of the Year.

Daniel O’Connell

From the Class of 1967, Daniel O’Connell played varsity football from 1964-67, coached by Ken Perrone. He was the starting offensive guard for the undefeated 1965-66 State Class B Champions and was awarded Honorable Mention, Pine Tree Conference first team. He was the John Bapst freshman football and basketball coach in 1967-68, assistant coach in track in 1967-68, football coach from 1968-73, basketball coach from 1970-73, and head indoor and outdoor track coach in 1969-70. Graduating from Husson in 1972 with BS in business education, Dan taught at John Bapst from 1972-74 and was a high school baseball umpire for over 30 years. Dan went on to earn his master’s in educational administration from UMaine in 1997.

during his junior and senior years and served as captain as a senior. He was the 1969 state champ in javelin and earned third in the state for shotput. Sandy led the track team as a captain his junior and senior years. He also was a boxer.

Jody Norton

From the Class of 1983, Jody Norton ran cross-country and in 1981 won the Eastern Maine and State Class C Championships, helping the team to a 4th-place finish. The following year, he won the regional title, placing second in the state championship.

Jody was a state champion and holds the school record in the two-mile with a time of 9:39.9. He was also a member of a basketball state championship team under Coach Bill McManus and was named Athlete of the Year his junior year.

Scott Phelps

From the Class of 1988, the late Scott Phelps was an outstanding threesport athlete at John Bapst. He was the quarterback and a baseball pitcher who could play any position. In 1988 he became only the third 1,000-point

scorer in the school’s history. He was selected to the all-tourney team and received honorable mention, all state.

In basketball he averaged 17.3 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 7.2 assists per game, shooting 46% from the floor and 44% from the 3-point line.Â

Heather McLeod Rushmore

From the Class of 1995, Heather McLeod Rushmore was the team record setter in swimming for 1994 and 1995 in the 500-yard freestyle. She was selected to the Maine State All-Star Zone Team 1994 and 1995 and still holds the varsity record for the 500-yard freestyle. She was the state runner up freshman year and the state champ senior year. In each of her years she earned the state Top 16 Awards in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. She was PVC champion senior year in the 200 and runner-up in the 500. Heather was captain from 1993-95 and received the MVP Coaches' Award in 1992, 1993, and 1995. She received a Division I swimming scholarship to UMaine, graduating with a BS in nursing and earning UMaine AthleticAcademic Honor Roll status.

Coach John Mitchell coached football from 1954-57, basketball from 1954-58, and baseball from 1955-58.

A career highlight was beating Bangor High in his last game as John Bapst football coach. At Bapst he taught world history, civics, and health. John played basketball at URI, where he received Honorable Mention, AllAmerican during his senior year and where he played against Bob Cousy of Holy Cross, holding him to 8 points.

John is a member of the URI Hall of Fame, New England Basketball Hall of Fame, the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame, and Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

He was assistant basketball coach at Colby College for 40 years.

Jean S. Aldrich is living in Tallahassee, FL and is focusing on what she can do instead of what her military disability does not allow her to do. She volunteered for a hospice, but now is doing what she said her parents and teachers at John Bapst taught her: “to make a bad thing a good thing in my life.”

Lawrence and Alvina Ouellette Butera ’58 have retired to Florida.

Joanne Quigg Thomas spends her winters in Venice, Florida with her husband and their new Dandie Dinmont puppy (3rd one), named Danny Boy, and Rambler, their rescue cat. They have five grandchildren, who visit in Florida and live close by their summer house on a lake in Michigan.

Pauline Rudnicki Neville says life is good with four children, four grandchildren, and five and a half greatgrandchildren. They have traveled to all 50 states.

Frank Patch is retired, and enjoying skiing Sugarloaf Mountain. An avid Boston College football fan, he is also active singing in his church choir at St. Christopher’s in York, ME, just as he has since 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Bangor.

Stewart Whittemore says his son-in-law’s North Valley High School basketball team made it to the state playoffs for the third year in a row. The year before last he coached them to an undefeated season and the Oregon State 1A Championship.

Mary Julia Richard announced the passing of her dear sister, Catherine P. Richard, on November 24, 2014. She said Cathy’s goal after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2014, was to attend her 50th class union from John Bapst.

She made the reunion and had a wonderful time.

1964

Laurie Hoffer Chavira made a mission trip in November to Jamaica. The project was “Water with Blessings.”

Along with five others, they provided filters and training to 40 women in two different villages, each being provided with clean drinking water for their own families and three others. Laurie and her husband Oscar are still having a great retirement.

Paulette Pooler Thompson is living in Arizona and has retired from her career as a Delta flight attendant.

Richard King and his wife have been retired since June of 2008 and spend their winters in Florida. They have two grandsons currently attending Bapst who are both on the hockey team.

Cheryl Toole Stetson is happily retired from the USDA and traveling frequently to Arizona, Wyoming, and Florida. She has 14 grandchildren who are brilliant and beautiful.

Brian Enman has been inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame.

Mark Williams says his daughter Daphne is a 1st Lt. in the Marines, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and his son, Mark Jr. is still in college and doing well. He and his wife Lee are traveling a lot and would love to go on a trip with fellow alumni.

he summer of 2014 brought back the John Bapst Parents’ Association in order to offer a chance for parents to be involved in the school community and to improve communication. In 2014-15, the Parents’ Association hosted three Coffees with Mel in October, February, and May, which were attended by many current parents. Themes for the meetings ranged from curriculum issues to the course scheduling process, with each meeting giving parents an opportunity to hear from Head of School Mel MacKay, Principal Dave Armistead, and the school’s counselors.

Meetings for 2015-16 are planned for fall, winter, and spring, with internet safety an upcoming topic.

The Parents’ Association hosted a tent at the homecoming tailgate in each of the last two years, with parents volunteering their time and their cooking skills. Several parents have offered to help at school events, like Back-to-School Night, Step-Up Night, and the fifth-annual Golf Tournament in July.

Several parents volunteered their time to help the Development Office with the Spring Auction last year, and their help made the evening a success.

This past summer an ice cream social was held in July, offering new parents a chance to ask questions and meet one another.
