W
ith its opening in 1928, its re-founding in 1980, and the inception of the international program in 2011, John Bapst High School has evolved. In addition to its outstanding academics through the years, there has been another constant: the school’s athletic program. From the time inaugural Athletic Director Norbert Dowd gave the school its purple and white colors and Crusader mascot until today, a proud athletic tradition has grown and flourished, and it is celebrated through the John Bapst Athletic Hall of Fame.
Since 1972, inductees have spanned every decade of the school’s history; they made their mark as student-athletes in a wide range of sports and they have helped to write the history of a school known by its motto of Achievement, Integrity, and Respect and by the traditions of academic excellence, community, and school spirit that have made John Bapst one of New England’s top high schools. For their achievements as student-athletes and their place in the history of the school, we honor and celebrate all members of the John Bapst Athletic Hall of Fame. Go Crusaders!

CaRparelli '62 A long with being captain of the baseball team his junior and senior years at John Bapst, Nick Carparelli was also the most valuable player for baseball his junior year and most valuable player in basketball his senior year. After graduating from John Bapst, Nick attended MCI in Pittsfield, where he played both basketball and baseball. He went on to attend Southern Connecticut State, where he played four years of baseball and basketball, enjoying great success. Following graduation, Nick signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles and later accepted a position to teach health and
physical education in Cheshire, Connecticut. Following a stint as an assistant baseball coach at Cheshire High School Nick spent many years at Cheshire Academy, as head coach, basketball coach and golf coach, earning many victories and awards. In 2000 and 2001 he was selected high school coach of the year by the New Haven Tap Off Club. Nick retired in 2006. “Looking back at my time at Bapst, being able to play with such good players as Jimmie McGrath, Jimmie Baker, and Hubie Black made my high school baseball experience special!”

CIANO '66 G
us was born in Brooklyn, New York, April 1948, as “my poppa’s son. I hit the ground, I was on the run.” Before coming to John Bapst Gus lived in New York, Texas, Arizona, Missouri, California, the territory of Alaska (it was not yet a state), Ohio, Germany, Italy, and Spain. By the time he was 17 years of age he had spent on average of 1.7 years in each place. In Bangor, where he spent ten months, he found his fourth high school in four years: John Bapst. While at Bapst he lettered in football, basketball, track, wrestling and boxing. Gus’s first effort at organized sports was in the boxing ring at six years old. Later, in Europe during his sophomore and junior years, his teams won the league championship in football and he was the league’s most valuable player. His teams were also second in Europe in basketball and first in track. “My high school in Spain gave me the experience

of playing basketball against the professionals of Real Madrid. We also ran track in exhibition against the Spanish Olympic Track Team. “And we know what happened in my senior year at Bapst! Go Crusaders!” Gus went on to play football at The University of Dayton before military service in the Army, and then at Central State University in Ohio following that service. He attained a commercial pilot’s license and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He went on to spend 36 years working as a manufacturing manager. His greatest accomplishment and treasure: his two daughters, Lisa and Nicole. He is also the proud grandparent of Noah (17), Jonas (14), and Layla (7). Gus lives in Montgomery, Alabama alongside his daughter Nicole, her husband Rick, and granddaughter Layla.

Bob
bolduc '67 B ob attended John Bapst from 1963-1967 where he played football, basketball, and track. He is currently in the John Bapst Athletic Hall of Fame for the 1964 and 1965 football teams. Bob was co-captain of the 1965 football team and the 1966-1967 basketball team. He was a basketball All Tournament First Team and an All State Honorable Mention in 1966. He also held the single game scoring record (39 points) at John Bapst from 1967-1985. Bob was a member of the 19651966 basketball team which upset #1 seed Stearns, and went on to the Class A Finals where they were
eventually defeated by the Cony Rams. Bob attended the University of Maine at Farmington from 1967-1971, where he played basketball and majored in education. He went on to teach social studies and physical education, and coach football, basketball, and girls’ softball at both the middle and high school levels, at Dirigo High School, Boothbay Region High School, Old Town High School, and Brewer High School until his retirement in 2000. Bob is married to Kathy and has three children: Mike, Randy, and Kim. They enjoy spending their winters in Florida and their summers on Pushaw Lake.
