History comes alive A

irdrie has a rich history of settlers and railways, starting out as a stop destination for the Calgary and Edmonton Railway Company train delivering mail.

Buildings were soon built along the railway, with workers living nearby to care for the train.

Before long, general stores, blacksmith shops and a school were built to service the establishing families and growing number of people travelling to this tiny hamlet to begin a new life.

Receiving supplies by train, Airdrie grew to be a substantial size and, after much paperwork, was granted village status Sept. 9, 1909.

Airdrie has one of the highest growth rates in Canada – 6 to 8 per cent annually. With a current population of more than 60,000, it’s the fastest-growing city in Alberta and one of the fastest in Canada. In 2015, Airdrie’s population grew by more than 10 new residents per day.

Gwacheon Park

Located within Nose Creek Park off Main Street and open year round, Gwacheon Park is an important landmark and home to six handcrafted totem poles donated to the City of Airdrie in 2007 by sister city Gwacheon, Korea to commemorate the 10th year of sharing a sister-city relationship. The park celebrates a sisterhood agreement that has greatly enriched the communities of Gwacheon and Airdrie with continued friendship and understanding between two diverse cultures. Please note: Nose Creek Park is undergoing an extensive enhancement project in 2016, affecting access to some areas.

Iron Horse Park

With miniature trains, track and landscape to represent the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) from the prairies to the coast, Iron Horse Park is a train lover’s dream come true. Take the 1.6-kilometre interpretive journey aboard one of the 1/8th scale diesel or steam locomotives at the park and get a feeling for what the railway was like in Western Canada during the pioneer days. The rail journey takes visitors over hills, across trestles and through tunnels across the varied landscape. The park is a work in progress, with plans to eventually add a small-scale farmstead, town and industries typical to the journey.

Situated at 820 Railway Gate, Iron Horse Park is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting, from Victoria Day weekend through Thanksgiving (May 17 to Oct. 9, 2016). The park

will also be open as a participant in ARTember on Oct. 1 and 2. Admission to the park is free but each journey costs $3 cash per person. Children under age three ride free but must be accompanied by an adult. ironhorsepark.net MAP LOCATOR F7

Nose Creek Valley Museum

Honouring more than 100 years of local history, the museum has been preserving the past of Airdrie and surrounding area since 1988. With more than 10,000 artifacts, the museum treats visitors to a glimpse into the past. Exhibits include wildlife displays, a First Nation’s display, settler’s cabin, blacksmith shop, general store and barber shop. The museum’s collection also includes 4-H displays, antique cars and farm machinery, one of the largest arrowhead collections in Canada, and memorabilia from the First and Second World Wars.

Admission is $2 for adults; children under 12 are free. Museum activities include ongoing research, collection of artifacts and archival materials, creation of local history books, periodic art shows and displays, and guided tours. A selection of local history books, postcards, pins and souvenirs are available for purchase through the gift shop. ART IN THE LIBRARY Airdrie Public Library Throughout the year, Airdrie Public Library (APL) plays host to local, regional and travelling art, with six exhibitions a year of approximately 70 pieces each. With nearly 175,000 visitors coming through the library’s doors each year, the APL art gallery is an important cultural stop in the community. Only a short drive away, the Airdrie Rodeo Ranch is located west of Airdrie on Highway 567. CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS Airdrie offers a great variety of ways to celebrate the country’s birthday in style! Enjoy the Canada Day Parade down Main Street starting at 10 a.m.

Take in the action at the Airdrie Pro Rodeo, stop by the Airdrie Public Library Canada Day barbecue, or visit Iron Horse Park. Canada Day fireworks festivities run from 2 to 11 p.m. at Chinook Winds Park, with food vendors, a monster truck show, live bands and family entertainment, magicians, henna, face painting and a small market. The evening wraps up with a 15-minute fireworks display at 10:45 p.m. Details at airdrie.ca

AIRDRIE AG SOCIETY RANCH HAND COMPETITION Airdrie Rodeo Grounds See firsthand the cattle-handling skills used by local area ranchers and farmers. Events include simulated branding; team sorting; team penning; simulated doctoring and trailer loading of cattle; and for the kids, a calf scramble. Food and beverages available from noon to 4:30 p.m. The rodeo grounds are 6.5 kilometres west of Airdrie on Hwy 567. 12 to 4:30 p.m.

47th ANNUAL SHOW AND REUNION Pioneer Acres (Irricana) The museum’s main event of the year will feature virtually every piece of equipment running. Many outside exhibitors also bring displays, equipment, crafts, and much more. The 2016 feature is Ford tractors and equipment.

AIRDRIE SUMMER CLASSIC CHARITY CAR SHOW & SHINE East Lake Park Presented by the Time Traveller’s Car Club of Airdrie. A family event offering a little bit for everyone.

Features include a portable dyno, live retro band Ronnie and the Fixations, food vendors, 50/50 draws and a silent auction. All proceeds donated to local charities. No admission fee for spectators but a food bank donation is requested. For spectators the show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Entry fee for show vehicles is $10; registration 8 a.m. to noon.) Rain date is Aug. 20.

53rd ANNUAL AG SOCIETY FALL FAIR Plainsmen Arena Celebrating the best Airdrie has to offer, with a number of different classes that span all ages. STEAM AND STATIONARY ENGINES Pioneer Acres (Irricana) An event that highlights several stationary and portable steam engines as well as a 65 HP Case steam tractor. Visitors can also enjoy an impressive collection of internal combustion engines. Early settlers used these stationary engines to pump water, lift grain in elevators, operate blacksmith and woodworking shops, produce electricity and perform a host of other tasks.

ART OF THE HARVEST Airdrie Ag Park The Airdrie and District Agricultural Society (ADAS) is proud to host this annual harvest event. Horse teams and vintage equipment will be used to harvest the grain planted in spring. This informational demo and event offers something for the very small to the very tall, from the city dweller to those with rural roots. Party Time Be a part of the festive, family friendly celebrations in Airdrie Airdrie Festival of Lights

Lighting up Airdrie for more than 20 years, the festival turns Nose Creek Park in the heart of Airdrie into a winter wonderland – the largest outdoor walk-through light display in Canada. Open nightly Dec. 1-31 from 6-9 p.m., Airdrie Festival of Lights welcomes more than 60,000 people annually as they stroll through the light display, sip hot chocolate and enjoy two beautifully handcrafted bonfire pits (feel free to bring your own marshmallows). Admission to the festival is by cash donation, parking is free, and the cost of a hot chocolate and miniature train ride – each only $2 cash – has remained the same since 1996. Airdrie Parades & Fireworks

This committee hosts a variety of festivities in Airdrie each year. Enjoy the Canada Day Parade and fireworks July 1 in celebration of Canada’s birthday. The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Main Street.

In 2016, enjoy the Mardi Gras Party theme, with live bands and 100 floats anticipated. Starting at Chinook Winds Park at 2 p.m., enjoy food vendors, a monster truck show, and plenty of music and family entertainment. A 15-minute fireworks display begins at 10:45 p.m., bringing the day’s fun to a close with a bang. In December, don’t miss the Santa Claus Parade Dec. 3, starting at 5 p.m. on Main Street. This lighted parade is expected to include 50 floats, and the star of the day will arrive in Airdrie in his sleigh! On Dec. 31, take in the New Year’s Eve fireworks fun at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park (behind Genesis Place). Bring the whole family to enjoy the 15-minute display starting at 6:30 p.m. airdrieparades.com

Now in its sixth year, Airdrie’s art and culture celebration will take place Sept. 29 through Oct. 2.

The festival includes the culmination of the annual AIRdirondack Project, where Adirondack chairs are transformed into one-of-a-kind masterpieces by local artists. The celebration includes Culture at the Creek, a free, hands-on, activity-filled experience at East Lake Park for all ages to explore all forms of art, participate in public art projects, enjoy live music and dance performances, as well as food trucks and beer gardens. Many Airdrie artisans display and demonstrate their work, from wood carvers to potters, to jewelry and canvas.

The celebration is a perfect opportunity at which to meet artists and take home a creative souvenir from Airdrie. Culture at the Creek gets underway at East Lake Park with the Schooled in the Arts Teen Tent from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 30. followed by the first performance in a concert series that continues through the weekend. This 10th annual family friendly event takes place Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in celebration of community in the Airdrie area while raising awareness of local hunger issues. All funds raised support Airdrie Food Bank operations. Enjoy demonstrations and hands-on activities by potters; children’s activities; and local musicians and artists. The corner of Eighth Street and First Avenue is where more than 30 colourful banners fly proudly during the spring/summer and fall. The banners are the works of Airdrie and area artists and students who submitted their art for adjudication. The joint project of the Creative Airdrie Society, Airdrie Regional Arts Society, City of Airdrie and Camgill Developments brightens the streetscape brilliantly.

Bert Church Theatre - Applause

Centennial Sculpture

The Centennial Sphere sculpture outside City Hall on Main Street was a community-driven art project created to celebrate Airdrie’s Centennial in 2009.

The piece was created by Cochrane artist Honsun Chu. The main foyer and meeting rooms at City Hall also feature local art displays.

The Collaboration Project

Drop by the Chinook Winds fire hall’s main foyer between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and enjoy the work of abstract artist Koos de Jongh. Organized into three distinct panels, the installation of paintings takes advantage of the hall’s unique open design.

Gwacheon Totems

Six handcrafted totem poles stand in Gwacheon Park (part of Nose Creek Park), donated by Airdrie’s sister city, Gwacheon, South Korea. The totem poles were received as a gift to commemorate 10 years of sister-city relations and friendship between Gwacheon and Airdrie. Gwacheon artisan Kim Ji-Moung crafted the totems.

The traffic utility box was turned into a work of art in September 2012 by local artist Veronica Funk as part of the Awesome Airdrie initiative. Iron Horse Park Mural

At the clubhouse inside the park, an impressive mural by artists from the Airdrie Regional Arts Society is underway. Currently visitors can see a dramatic full-wall-length painting of a steam engine powering its way across a wooden trestle over a deep mountain gorge. Main Street Art Project

At Centre Avenue and Main Street, discover the work of hundreds of Airdrie residents along a 300-foot mural on an empty lot. The Main Street Art Project combines the talents of more than 30 artists and 1,100 eager volunteers. Each panel of the mural contains a curving grey line which represents the pathways that connect Airdrie residents to each other. The Main Street Art Project is a temporary exhibit. McGillivray Park Sculpture

The developers of the Creekside Crossing shopping area installed a twisted stainless steel sculpture by metal artist Dan Hlus as part of the park space which is dedicated to fur trader Duncan McGillivray, who actually travelled just northwest of present-day Airdrie.

What was once just an old metal storage facility has since become art. The owners of the property, Miller Trucking, hired area artists Zach Abbott and Graham Masters to make the transformation. The colourful piece is becoming a popular backdrop for wedding photos and is worth exploring up close. Ravenswood Sculpture

Beside a traffic circle off Ravenswood View, discover a 30-foot metal art structure dedicated to its namesake feathered friend. The flock of the large black birds in flight frames one side of a sitting area and gathering place. The installation’s Moiré effect (two sets of repetitive lines, or dots, in this case) causes unique, shifting patterns depending on the angle of view, and thanks to artificial lights, can be enjoyed no matter the season or time of day.

Reunion and Sagewood Sculptures

Two of Airdrie’s northwest neighbourhoods boast sculptures for all to enjoy. Both are by Cochrane bronze sculptors Don and Shirley Begg. The Reunion statue honours the Bowen family, which originally farmed the land. The image of the little girl and the picnic basket reflects the Bowens’ family values, and recalls the fact that they were often seen enjoying picnics together in the early 1900s.

MAP LOCATOR B3 The Sagewood statue’s theme was chosen because of Airdrie residents’ love of soccer and the neighbourhood’s close proximity to the Monklands soccer fields. The statue of a young soccer player is based on a local boy named Gordie, and the Airdrie Soccer Association logo is immortalized on the statue.

Genesis Place - Out of the Blue

In the windows of Genesis Place, near the indoor soccer fields, discover the stained glass work Out of the Blue by Heinz and Patricia Demes. Whimsical in design, it features the contemporary treatment of images on vibrant, colourful modern glass, created with classic techniques and modern construction.

While at Genesis Place, check out the metal tiles created in Phase One by Airdrie school children to create a lasting legacy. Be sure to stand back; the tiles represent a panoramic view of the landscape of Airdrie.

The Bert Church LIVE Theatre

THE LEAHYS A fully equipped, live performing arts facility located on the east side of Airdrie next to Genesis Place and East Lake Park, Bert Church Theatre (BCT) creates memorable experiences to enjoy with family and friends.

“I love feeding people, I love making beautiful things. I love making people happy,” says Debi Macleod, owner of The Avenue Cakery and Bakeshoppe.

The compact store on Main Street has tempting displays laden with what you’d expect in a bakery, but it’s the artistry and quality that sets this shop apart.

A pastry chef, Macleod offers gracefully decorated cupcakes made from carrot, vanilla, chocolate and red velvet cake, all crowned with butter, chocolate or cream cheese icing. The display cases have a tasty assortment of cookies, sweet breads

and pies – including chocolate and pecan – and wooden boxes filled with row upon row of madefrom-scratch French macaroons in a rainbow of colours and flavours.

And then there are the cakes. Specialty cakes, artfully sculpted with fondant or icing, and made to order with handcrafted toppers that are completely edible.

One of her adult daughters does most of the specialty decorating, and Macleod has seen her create amazing cakes that look like toolboxes, ladybugs and of course, characters from Disney’s Frozen.

Macleod opened the bakery as a hobby in 2009, but it has since grown to employ 10 people “who are all talented and make amazing things.”

Drizzzles Candy Shop Enter this gem on Main Street and you’ll discover a scrumptious, colourful world of handcrafted chocolates and fudge, as well as candy galore from Bertie Bott’s Beans to Pink Candy Popcorn.

Owner and chocolatier Adila Faheem, whose sweet-toothed emporium beckons to children of all ages, is excited about recent changes she’s made.

“The store is larger, and we’re doing soft serve (ice cream) now. We have 24 flavours,” she says with a laugh.

However, ice cream isn’t the only new confection she’s serving up.

“The biggest thing is my single-origin chocolate,” says Faheem.

Her creations are made from 70-per-cent French chocolate, which her supplier purchases as cocoa beans from an individual farmer or from a single plantation. Depending on where they are grown, the beans can have different flavours, tastes and aromas.

“If one is grown surrounded by nuts, it’ll have a nutty flavour,” she explains.

It’s more expensive, but Faheem is committed to making quality chocolates.

“If you have to eat something, you have to eat good.”

Just as important, however, is the glow on the faces of young and old as they walk into Drizzzles.

“It’s amazing,” Faheem says. “The kids who walk in here, their faces are all lit up.”

Located on Chinook Winds Drive, south of Yankee Valley Boulevard, Chinook Winds Park offers a variety of activities for kids of all ages. In addition to pathways, features include an imaginative playground, a skate park, a spray park (new features added in 2016), ball diamonds, four beach volleyball courts, a multi-use court, a concession and, in winter, a boarded ice rink as well as a toboggan hill.

East Lake Athletic Park

The focal point of sports and recreation in Airdrie is a massive park space located directly behind Genesis Place. Ed Eggerer is home to an eightlane, state-of-the-art rubberized running track, a multi-use playing field, track and field, long jump and triple jump pits, and a grandstand. East Lake Park offers soccer fields, tennis courts, north and south viewing docks, a fire pit, and pathways that wind around a large water feature.

Fletcher Park

Those with a need for speed and a love of BMX need look no further than Fletcher Park, located just a few blocks off Main Street. Host to the BMX Nationals in 2010, Fletcher Park is a top location for BMX riding on the hard dirt track, whether beginner or expert. The park also features three baseball diamonds and a playground.

Airdrie offers three indoor ice surfaces: Genesis Place Twin Arena; Plainsmen Arena; and the Ron Ebbesen Arena, home to the Airdrie Thunder, the city’s Junior B hockey team. Free public skating is offered at all three arenas. The City also maintains a total of five boarded outdoor rinks, three snowbank rinks and three natural ice surfaces.
