HISTORY AND HERITAGE
VISIT the PAST
History of Airdrie
Airdrie, having celebrated its centennial in 2009, has a rich history of settlers and railways. Having become a stop destination for the Calgary and Edmonton Railway Company train that delivered mail because of Nose Creek, soon buildings were built along the railway with workers living nearby to care for the train. Workers turned into families and soon general stores, blacksmith shops and a school were built, with more people travelling to this tiny hamlet to begin a new life. Receiving supplies via the train, Airdrie grew to be a substantial size and, after much paperwork, was granted village status Sept. 9, 1909.

The collection at the museum covers multiple aspects of Airdrie’s heritage. There is a natural history and geological display, a fossil display and a First Nations history collection, as well as local history information, including farmhouse, merchant and blacksmith interiors. The museum’s collection also includes farm equipment and antique automobiles; local military artifacts; a caboose and rails with rail car; a Second World War nose art display; and a 4-H display. The spring/summer 2012 exhibit is Picture the Past, a glimpse into the history of photography and cameras. Take a trip to historical Airdrie through a special virtual tour in the museum’s very own ‘time machine.’ Museum activities include ongoing research, collection of artifacts and archival materials, creation of local history books, and periodic art shows and displays. Nose Creek Valley Museum is the location of the Airdrie Visitor Information Centre.

{ Gwacheon Park
Gwacheon Park In the centre of Airdrie, six towering totem poles can be found in Gwacheon Park. Elaborately designed, the totem poles were a gift to Airdrie from Gwacheon, Korea, in 2007, to mark their 10-year relationship as sister cities. Founded in 2003, Gwacheon Park is an important landmark that overlooks the heartbeat of Airdrie. As part of the Alberta Icons Program launched in 2010, Gwacheon Park is a must-see destination. Located within Nose Creek Park off Main Street, Gwacheon Park is open year-round.

All aboard, Ironhorse Park! Situated at 820 Railway Gate, Ironhorse Park is a train lover’s dream come true: 1.6 kilometres of track wind around a field designed to mimic a trip between Calgary and Vancouver. Enjoy the scenic ride through tunnels and over bridges while comfortably riding on a miniature train. Open Sundays, Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 per person. June 23 6TH ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS ARTS FESTIVAL Nose Creek Park The goal of the Empty Bowls Festival, hosted by Airdrie Food Bank, is not only to bring the community together, but to showcase local artistic talent and draw attention to hunger issues in Airdrie. Held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., the festival is a great opportunity to get the family together to enjoy local musicians; a silent auction on bowls made by local artists and VIPs; and children’s events, as well as a free soup lunch. June 23-Sept. 22 THE AIRDIRONDACK ART PROJECT Cruise around Airdrie between June and September and you will come across 12 original works of art that just happen to be Adirondack chairs (or, as the Creative Airdrie Society calls them, AIRdirondacks). These chairs are auctioned off at a formal gala in support of the arts at McArthur Fine Furniture, where guests enjoy gourmet foods and a live and swinging jazz band. creativeairdrie.ca
June 27-July 1 45th ANNUAL AIRDRIE PRO RODEO This event never fails to bring out the cowpoke in everyone. With highlights such as bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and the most dangerous – bull riding – the Airdrie Pro Rodeo always draws a crowd. Enjoy evening beer gardens rich with nightlife, as well as daytime activities for children. A short drive away from Airdrie, the Rodeo Ranch is located west of Airdrie on Highway 567. CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS Airdrie offers a variety of ways to celebrate the country’s birthday in style. Take in the Canada Day Parade starting at 10 a.m., hosted by the Airdrie Pro Rodeo Association. After that, enjoy a nice lunch at many of the local restaurants or stop in at the Airdrie Public Library Canada Day barbecue, where $6 can buy you a pulled-pork sandwich, a side and a giant cookie. Head to Nose Creek Park for Dog Day Afternoon, hosted by the Airdrie & District Humane Society. Features include an adopt-a-thon, barbecue, pet photography, obedience demos and safety talks, from noon to 4 p.m. The Airdrie Pro Rodeo is still in full effect, with events happening all the way into the night. As the day draws to a close, there is of course still one festivity left: fireworks. Gather with the rest of Airdrie at East Lake Park at dusk (approximately 10 p.m.) and enjoy the show. airdrie.ca/calendars
July 21 AIRDRIE AG SOCIETY RANCH RODEO This is an amateur event hosted by the Airdrie & District Agricultural Society at Irvine Tack & Trailers in Crossfield. It’s free to watch and is a great opportunity to see firsthand what really happens on a working cattle ranch. Events start at 9 a.m. and include cattle penning, doctoring, sorting, loading and branding. airdrieagsociety.com
Aug. 18-19 ANNUAL FALL FAIR – HORTICULTURE & BENCH SHOW Genesis Place The Airdrie and District Agricultural Society is pleased to be hosting this 49th annual fall event featuring various competitions and judging in categories that span all ages, including vegetable growing, children’s crafts, baking, fine art and photography. Exhibits can be dropped off Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Judging begins the same day at 2 p.m. and exhibits are open next day to the public starting at 10 a.m. airdrieagsociety.com

Aug. 25 AIRDRIE SUMMER CLASSIC SHOW AND SHINE Nose Creek Park Airdrie’s gearing up for this 12th annual event at which hundreds of cars, ranging from first models up until modern day, will be shined, tuned up and parked for spectators and vehicle aficionados alike to admire. The date scheduled for the rare opportunity to see even rarer cars together is Aug. 11. In case of bad weather, the rain-out date is Aug. 25. Sept. 14-30 ARTember It’s only in its second year, but Airdrie’s citywide celebration of the arts is already becoming a highly popular and all-inclusive arts festival, including wine tastings and painting workshops, author readings, dance classes, talent shows, art shows, professional musicians and comedians and a multicultural celebration. The festival launches with an art show and sale wine-and-cheese on the first Friday and then everything swings into high gear (and with a bang!) with the Cooper’s Crossing Twilight Carnival Saturday, Sept. 15, with fireworks, a children’s carnival, food and artisan vendors and Japanese floating lanterns. The festival, which ties into Alberta Culture Days, Sept. 28-30, hosts tons of free events at more than a dozen venues including a multicultural celebration in Nose Creek Park. This 17-year tradition is going strong as more than 55,000 visitors came through Nose Creek Park to experience the lights last season. TAKE A PUBLIC ART TOUR!
Airdrie has a strong arts community that has been making art happen in public spaces, most noticeably in the last two years. A tour around the city will introduce you to eight original projects created by the community and area businesses. Main Street Art Project
Centennial Sphere The Centennial Sphere sculpture outside City Hall on Main Street was a community-driven art project created to celebrate Airdrie’s Centennial in 2009. The piece was created by Cochrane artist Honsun Chu. The sphere represents Airdrie, and each water jet ring represents a year since its inception in 1909.

At Centre Avenue and Main Street you’ll find the work of hundreds of Airdrie residents along a 300foot mural. The Main Street Art Project combined the talents of more than 30 artists and 1,100 eager volunteers, from schoolchildren to dog walkers and even the local Twins and Triplets Association, to create a colourful mural on an empty lot. Each panel of the mural contains a curving grey line which represents the pathways that connect Airdrie residents to each other. The Main Street Art Project is a temporary exhibit. It will remain at its current location until construction begins, but plans are to move most of the pieces to a new location near the end of the year. (To learn more, visit creativeairdrie.ca)
The three square beams represent three elements – time, space and people – that have touched, supported and influenced the growth and development of Airdrie over the past 100 years. These three fundamental beams represent the essence of Airdrie and are interrelated. Time advances in a linear direction, therefore representing past, present and future. Space represents three-dimensional expansion and growth. People represent the residents, the communities, the businesses and the government. They are the dynamic force that transforms a location into a city.

Patricia Demes. Their studio was commissioned to create stained glass that would act as large glass murals visible from both sides. The work consists of various images representing the theme of Airdrie’s legacy, thriving present and optimistic future. Whimsical in design, it features the contemporary treatment of images on vibrant, colourful modern glass, created with classic techniques and modern construction. The detailed images are presented in a medium not overly used in North America. This unique mural is a beautiful legacy of Airdrie’s past and present, for future generations to enjoy.
nic basket. In Sagewood, a statue of a young soccer player graces the community. Both are by Cochrane bronze sculptors Don and Shirley Begg. The Reunion statue honours the Bowen family, which originally farmed the land. The image of the little girl and the picnic basket reflects the Bowens’ family values, and recalls the fact that they were often seen enjoying picnics together in the early 1900s. The Sagewood statue’s theme was chosen because of Airdrie residents’ love of soccer and the neighbourhood’s close proximity to the Monklands soccer fields. The statue of a young soccer player is based on a local boy named Gordie, and the Airdrie Soccer Association logo is immortalized on the statue.

You will find sculptures in two of Airdrie’s northwest neighbourhoods. Reunion is home to a bronze statue of a little girl taking a peek inside her mom’s pic-

been selected as Airdrie’s icon and represent one of 36 community attractions featured across Alberta as part of a passport program. (Find more information at albertaicons.com) The totem poles were received as a gift to commemorate 10 years of sister-city relations and friendship between Gwacheon and Airdrie. In 2006, timbers were exported from Canada to ensure they were hardy enough to withstand our harsh winters. After they arrived in Gwacheon, work was commissioned to a local artisan, Kim Ji-Moung, who crafted the totems and accompanied them on their journey back to Canada for the installation ceremony in Airdrie.
Street Art Gallery What do you do with an old skateboard park surrounded by chain-link fence? You create an outdoor all-purpose sport court and an outdoor gallery. Located at the entrance to Nose Creek Park on Main Street, this project was created during ARTember 2011, led by local aerosol artist Zach Abbott as part of a free workshop.

When you drive by this impressive 300-foot mural on First Avenue, you won’t believe it used to be just an old metal storage facility. The owners of the property, Miller Trucking, hired two area artists to turn it into a work of art. The colourful piece is becoming a popular backdrop for wedding photos and is worth exploring up close. See how the artists worked with corrugated metal to create ‘waves of art’ for all to enjoy. The work was designed and installed by Zach Abbott and Graham Masters.

Owner Michael Pyne has reinvented the pub menu with a new chef and the freshest of ingredients. Everything from the salad dressings and sauces to the lamb burger are made from scratch. And because Michael has his own health concerns, he has made sure the menu has a greater array of healthy options, including six sensational salads. My pick? The candied almond chicken and Brie with homemade maple-Dijon dressing. I think I’d raise
a pint to that – or better yet drink it in my soup. Try the Guinness-and-asparagus soup for something different. Take a turn east down First Avenue and find out what all the fuss is about at Rico’s in the Village. Owner and chef Rico Pacheco lovingly restored one of Airdrie’s oldest homes and created an intimate gathering place for Rico’s South American tapas. Now for something completely different ... and about time! Taj Indian Restaurant, located in
the north end of the city in Dixon Crossing, is a revelation. Brothers Bhinder and Sonny Dhaliwal have created a really hip environment to enjoy traditional Indian food served in copper dishes brought right from India. Everything here is made from scratch, so be prepared to relax – food this good is worth waiting for. But Peppercorns more than makes up for it. This has always been one of my favourites and the place our family goes for special occasions. (Wednesdays are special occasions, aren’t they?) Chef Umesh Singh has revolutionized dining out in Airdrie, bringing his sophisticated palette to our table each and every time. Recently we dined out on buffalo carpaccio, lobster bisque and blackened ahi tuna (a rarity to find in this city). If you heard the rumours that Ristorante Napoli is closing, don’t panic yet – because owners Sal and Anna Maria Monna are simply moving over to Kings Heights this summer with a brand new restaurant called Sal’s Pizza. Rustic Napoli pizzas baked in an imported wood-burning forno oven are on the menu with hearty Italian sandwiches and appetizers for a more casual upbeat ambience. simo pasta dishes from the old restaurant. (Depending on when you read this, you may still be able to sneak in one last bite at Ristorante Napoli next to City Hall on Main Street.) Sal’s opens in late June – watch for it! Paros On Main is all Greek and that’s a good thing, especially the portions and the flavour. Of course, you can get traditional Greek fare, such as souvlaki and tzatziki (best ever!), but our recommendation is the seafood platter with salmon, halibut, scallops, calamari, spanakopita ... need we go on? Since opening almost 10 years ago, this place has never let our taste buds down. Opa! P.S. Come for the belly dancing every Friday and Saturday night. Airdrie now has two sushi restaurants. The recently opened Zenbu, at Creekside Crossing just off Eighth Street, also features Korean barbecue, so you get the chance to explore two distinct menus. Zenbu is constantly playing with its sushi menu and inventing new ways to present the flavours, much to the delight of sushi fanatics. Highly recommended is the spicy ahi tuna – currently cubed and tossed in a fiery sauce over rice noodles. Bon appétit, Airdrie!

AIRDRIE PUBS AND PATIOS Where is the best place to unwind on a summer afternoon in Airdrie? Photographer Kurtis Kristianson took a few friends to find out. During the long, hot dog days of summer, one of the most satisfying things to do is spend some quality time with friends and colleagues at one of Airdrie’s licensed patios. Everyone has been to their neighborhood pub or has a favourite patio they frequent, but did you know that there are at least 12 licensed patios open for business in Airdrie during the summer months? I had no idea there were so many. So when I asked a couple of friends to join my wife and me to tour some local patios, we were turned on to a wide range of places to relax and enjoy a few cold ones outdoors. When we could we tried the food, had at least one beer or highball and stayed for a minimum of one hour … all the while recording our experience and blowing my editor’s budget out of the water.
Brewster’s Brewster’s is one of the larger patios in town and offers a very comfortable and slightly more private feel. The perimeter has high walls and glass that block out (most of) the noise from the street to the south, and the open lattice roof has heaters for the occasional cool night. As expected, our waitress was friendly and the food and craft beer was excellent. We felt more at home with the wicker-and-cushion furniture and as dense as the seating is, never at anytime did we feel that we couldn’t carry on a private conversation. This is the place to have an early evening pint with friends or a date you’re trying to impress (good luck). 3 Stonegate Dr. NW

With only 10 tables, the patio here is a little smaller than most of the ones we visited and forced us to be slightly more intimate with our group. With the ’80s alternative playing in the background, sitting in the plastic chairs and glass panels keeping out the street noise, I felt strangely more at home. No gimmicks here, just good old BP’s sports bar atmosphere on the outside with a couple of heaters overhead. Service was good and we could have easily spent a few hours here (oh, yeah, we did). This is a nice medium-sized patio attached to the south side of the Mr Mikes restaurant in the Sierra Springs area. There are 10 tables with umbrellas at this location and it has an open atmosphere that doesn’t leave you feeling crowded. The furniture still has a classy feel to it as far as patios go and the outside ‘club’ music was left at a good level in the background. Service and the beer selection were good and the very tasty house craft beers are served in a tall “stange” (narrow and very tall glass). Unfortunately even though you can still catch some of that warm evening sun to the west, this patio is a little close to the noisy Highway 2. Now here is a location that should almost be termed “outdoor living room,” as this patio actually has a split personality. Along with the standard patio seating is the couches-and-fireplace setup that opens up onto the golf course to the west. Immediately we felt like VIPs, delivered from our important day, enjoying each other’s company and sipping our domestic beer. Yes, domestic beer only at this location, but it is a golf and country club and it’s already broken the mould with this amazing open-air lounge. This is a fantastic spot to get together with your friends on a warm early evening to enjoy good food and open space. The guy with the date should come here at dusk. 525 Woodside Dr. NW

This addition to the original location is a little smaller, but it has been well thought out. The seating is separated from the lot by high frosted glass and there is a heater running the length of the overhead canopy. The furniture is solid, the service is good and the setup makes for a fairly simple but intimate experience. This is still a traditional Irish pub, however, so if you’re looking for a pub atmosphere and like being outside, this is it. The medium-sized patio at Original Joes’ is fairly simple, with a glass panel fence to eliminate street noise and your standard furniture and umbrellas. However, even with 12 tables this place still felt quite open when busy and conversations at our table were easy and private. As simple as the patio is, it’s still Joe’s great food and beer selection and specials. Our waitress was excellent and timely and we ended up more lost in conversation while there than hooked up on the atmosphere. In the centre of Airdrie lies Nose Creek Park. Named for the Nose Creek that lazily runs through it, the park is home to morning joggers, afternoon playground-goers and evening dog walkers. Events usually held at the park include the Festival of Lights and Canada Day celebrations. During the winter, Nose Creek Pond, found in the middle of the park, is open to the public as a free skating location. Nose Creek Park comes with playgrounds, fire pits, winding paved pathways and beautiful scenery, among other things. Tennis The East Lake Park courts are the best non-club courts in Alberta. The plexipave surface is the best hard-court tennis surface in the world and is used at both the Australian Open and U.S. Open Grand Slam tournaments. The four courts are in East Lake Park and overlook East Lake. They are surrounded by green space and are far enough from any road to be nice and quiet. (Park at Genesis Place or in the parking lot just off East Lake Road near the Scouts Hall).
East Lake Athletic Park A lot of action takes place behind Genesis Place, thanks to a 400-metre eight-lane rubberized running track and grandstand viewing for 1,000 including handicap access. This location is home to various fundraising events, such as the Rotary Tour de Airdrie Race each April, the Mayor’s Run in early June and the Cancer Society
Relay for Life at the end of June. The track is attracting regional sporting competitions (in 2009 Airdrie hosted the Alberta 55 Plus Games) and local football rivalries are played out here.
Fletcher Park Those with a need for speed and a love of BMX can look no further than Fletcher Park in Airdrie. Host to the BMX Nationals in 2010, Fletcher Park is a top-quality location for BMX riding on the hard dirt track, whether beginner or expert. The most ambitious project on the drawing board is the development of a $35 million dollar 150-acre Airdrie and District Agriculture and Recreation Park, which when complete will include an RV park, rodeo arena and nine-acre “heritage farm.” The society sponsors the Junior Rodeo held one hour before every performance of the Airdrie Pro Rodeo June 27- July 1. This is your chance to see future cowpokes test their skills at pee wee barrel racing, calf scramble and junior barrel racing. On July 21, the Ag Society showcases life on a working ranch with its Ranch Rodeo held in Crossfield at Irvine Tack & Trailers. Airdrie Pro Rodeo Airdrie Pro Rodeo never fails to bring out the cowpoke in everyone. ALL ABOARD! Iron Horse Park is open to the public, Sundays, from Victoria Day long weekend to Thanksgiving. The park is operated by a volunteer organization which is run by the Alberta Model Engineering Society, who want to share their hobby and the awesomeness of trains with children of all ages. Birthdays and special events can also be booked at the park. Stop by for a picnic, a train journey, or a walk around the grounds. For $3 per person you can enjoy a journey on the miniature railway created by local train enthusiasts.

Beiseker
Carstairs Fewer than 30 minutes north of Airdrie lies Carstairs, a charming small town with lots of character. A quiet location with large events, Carstairs gets a big crowd going every time. Highlights include the June 20 Summer Solstice 5K Walk/Run, a community fundraiser. During the third week of July (July 20-22, 2012), Carstairs is pleased to put on its annual Beef and Barley Days, a festival full to the brim with such events as a rodeo, pancake breakfast, kids events, parade and even a cabaret. Crossfield Within a 15-minute drive north of Airdrie lies the quiet town of Crossfield. Filled with small-town charm, Crossfield is worth a visit. A notable event is the annual Pete Knight Days starting on June 15 with a free town breakfast at Crossfield Community Hall at 8:30 a.m. On June 16, spectators can take a seat on Main Street to watch the parade celebrating Pete Knight, a legendary 20th century bronc rider who first rode in the Crossfield Rodeo in 1918. Its population may be only 828, but the Village of Beiseker is large in character. Situated 45 minutes northeast of Airdrie, it makes for a great day trip or, with its campground, a quiet place to tuck in for the night. At the end of Main Street is the Beiseker Station Museum located in the old CPR train station, where families can see what life was like for settlers.
