riting on paper has been with us for more than two thousand years, providing a basis for record keeping which, in turn, enabled the administration of increasingly advanced societies and systems. But everything has its day and paper is no longer up to the complex matrices of information that make up any modern process or system. For airlines, as both aircraft and their operational procedures have grown ever more complex, this meant that flight crews and cabin crews had to carry ever heavier bags of documents onto aircraft. Not only did they weigh a lot but also it was not so easy to locate the right information, especially in an emergency.

Fortunately, a convergence of technologies has generated a much better solution and one that is more in line with current needs and usage. The paperless cockpit, cabin and world are already here and available for anybody wishing to improve the quality, timeliness and up-to-date relevance of the documents that underpin their processes. The arrival of tablet devices means that there is now a very convenient but powerful platform on which documents can be sorted, accessed and displayed and the advent of digital languages such as xml have simplified and facilitated the generation of documents without paper. Hyper-linking between documents and related content in different documents has made searching for the right information, in the

correct context, so much more straightforward. Plus, of course, there are huge savings to be made in the cost of fuel used to transport paper documents on aircraft as well as the cost of archive storage for paper on the ground and the staff needed to maintain storage facilities.

Our case study from Lufthansa CityLine on how they have leveraged the solution behind an already successful electronic flighty bag (EFB) to build a paperless flight operations’ content management system, will inspire many readers charged with taking an EFB to the next level of utility in their business. In a similar manner, Avion Express’s case study writes about how the airline has introduced an iOS based EFB to both make life easier for flight crew and improve the range of what they can manage through all phases of flight. From Citilink, there is a case study on how a fast growing airline has applied big data to improve flight operations and tackle fuel efficiency to make it into a cross-business challenge. Lufthansa Systems develops costefficient solution for displaying aircraft position on airport maps In late February 2019, it was announced that expanded functionality in Lido/AMM Airport Moving Map / External Bad Elf GPS receiver had been successfully tested with KLM on the flight deck.

Displaying one’s own aircraft position on airport maps helps pilots navigate between the gate and the runway. This function in the Lido/ AMM Airport Moving Map from Lufthansa Systems can now be combined with the external Bluetooth GPS receiver from Bad Elf. This GPS is easy to install on the flight deck and considerably cheaper than using GPS information from conventional avionics systems.

The new function was successfully tested with the customer KLM Royal Dutch Airlines during live operations between March and October 2018.

“Since 2015 we have been using the digital Lido/mPilot maps across our entire fleet,” said Maarten Koudijs, Manager Digitizing & Navigation Support at KLM. “The Lido/AMM tests with the Bad Elf GPS device continually improved our setup. We also had test flights on different aircraft types, including B737, B777, B787 and A330.

We are very pleased with the result of the field tests and are currently reviewing whether to introduce Lido/ AMM with GPS-based own-ship position.”

Lido/mPilot is Lido´s mapping solution for the iPad. Lido/ eRouteManual is the Windows-based app for navigation maps. Both applications include all important route information, including altitude data, airways and airport information.

The systems can access data such as GPS information, speed and the direction of the airport in order to display the position and orientation of the aircraft on the integrated Airport Moving Map (Lido/AMM).

Vistair Systems launches North American office In early March 2019, Vistair Systems, a provider of aviation management software, announced the opening of North American operations from its base in Texas. The new North American base will be led by Captain Bart Roberts, an experienced aviation professional with a career spanning over 30 year in the aviation sector.

Based out of Grapevine, Texas, Bart as Chief Operating Officer for North America will be looking to develop the Vistair US team in the coming months.

His experience spans both military and commercial aviation with leadership roles ranging from Chief Pilot and Managing Director Flight Operations, at American Airlines, through to his services experience with the US Navy as Commanding Officer of a squadron and retiring at the rank of Captain and VP Flight Operations at JetBlue. Bart also managed to complete a stint in the Dallas police department earlier in his career.

The new North American operations will be looking to expand its reach in the region and build upon its existing relationships which already includes Delta Air Lines.

Established in 2001, Vistair is already acknowledged as one of the world’s leading suppliers of aviation management software. Their DocuNet, document management system (DMS), is already being used by over 40 clients across the world whilst their safety management system (SMS) comprising SafetyNet, RiskNet and QualityNet is embedded in several clients, including Delta Air Lines, DHL (UK), easyJet and Norwegian.

Honeywell Software helps J-Air lower fuel costs and improve fleet performance In early March 7, 2019, Honeywell announced that it has been selected by J-Air, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines, to provide its GoDirect™ Flight Efficiency analytics software to help the airline access detailed analyses of flight data to improve flight efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and ultimately drive better decisions that can increase the airline’s profitability and on-time performance.

“Jet fuel accounts for a significant portion of an airline’s operating expenses, so it’s crucial for us to have an in-depth understanding of fuel consumption across all of our airlines and fleets,” said Kosuke Kuroda, manager, Fuel Group, General Procurement, Japan Airlines. “With Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency software, we’ll be able to make data-driven decisions that increase profits through more efficient flight routes and better visibility into operational controls that can result in increased fuel efficiency.”

As part of the agreement, J-Air will use Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency across 32 aircraft in its Embraer E170 and E190 fleet. Japan Airlines began using the service in 2017, and with nearly 200 aircraft enrolled from J-Air and Japan Airlines combined, the airline group is now the biggest customer for Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency in Asia Pacific. The airline group can now consolidate its data to drive operational efficiencies and lower environmental impact through reduced fuel burn.

Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency is a software application that integrates seamlessly with existing aircraft components to provide clear analysis reports and real-time insights to inform fuel-saving decisions. The software’s user-friendly interface and reports help pilots and flight operation crews improve flight-planning capabilities, expand their knowledge of operations and learn from previous flights.

Existing users of the solution have reported fuel savings of up to 5 percent.

“There’s immense pressure on airlines to find ways to make better use of their assets and increase profitability. A key focus area is fuel, which can account for over a quarter of their operating costs,” said Brian Davis, vice president, Airlines, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace. “GoDirect Flight Efficiency is a part of the Honeywell GoDirect software platform, which is scalable for the smallest of regional carriers to the largest of global fleets. This is especially beneficial for airline groups like Japan Airlines that can use the service to identify fuel savings specific to smaller, regional airlines and implement larger company initiatives that improve overall operations.”

SITAONAIR expands Brazil’s crucial ATS datalink services as air traffic grows SITAONAIR announced in early March 2019 that it has successfully expanded the operational capacity of air traffic service (ATS) datalink across Brazil’s airports, in a crucial step towards modernizing air traffic control operations in the country as air traffic continues to rise. The development of the service follows SITAONAIR’s instrumental work with Brazil’s Department of Airspace Control (DECEA), as part of the wider Brazilian Air Navigation Modernization SIRIUS program to advance ATS Datalink services. The deployment of services for The Commission for the Implementation of the Airspace Control System (CISCEA) to 24 control towers across Brazil began in June 2016, ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, the initiative, in partnership with SITAONAIR’s specialist air traffic control partners Saipher and ATC Systems has continued to evolve, increasing safety, sustainability and operational efficiency.

As a result, DECEA has seen an increase in aircraft opting to access voice and datalink ATIS (D-ATIS) as well as DCL (Datalink Departure Clearance Service) information in a more digital, convenient and secure manner, with approximately 250 departure clearances issued a day and 20,000 D-ATIS requests a month from the country’s major airports.

The implementation of these services in Brazil has been embraced by pilots and air traffic controllers alike. Thanks to SITAONAIR’s provision of AIRCOMcats and AIRCOMevatis systems to CISCEA as part of the contract, more than 20,000 D-ATIS pilot requests for Brazilian airports are managed every month from major airlines across all Brazilian airports. São Paulo, São Paulo Congonhas and Rio Galeao airports cover around 50% of the pilot requests.

According to Francisco Accacio, Program Manager at CISCEA: “We now have a fully-integrated Datalink Departure Clearance Service (DCL) and Electronic Flight Progression Strip (EFPS) environment, thanks to both SITAONAIR’s turn-key ATC tower solutions combined with Saipher ATC’s TATIC (Total Air Traffic Information Control) tower solution. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the expertise and local knowledge of ATC Systems, who not only achieved full installation of the solutions, but supported with training for Brazilian air traffic control operators and maintenance staff.”

SITAONAIR ATC technologies to transform region’s busiest airport In early March 2019, it was announced that Baku, home to the Caucasus’ busiest airport, is to receive transformative Air Traffic Control (ATC) air/ground communications services from SITAONAIR under a new deal with AZANS, Azerbaijan Air Navigation Services Department of ‘Azerbaijan Hava Yollari’ CJSC. The industry’s aircraft communications expert — has been selected to provide a suite of technical air/ground (A/G) datalink communications services for ATC towers, airlines and airspace users at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Azerbaijan.

With SITAONAIR’s solutions, AZANS will be equipped, for the first time, to increase the efficiency and safety of air navigation at Baku, and the upper Azerbaijan airspace, by enabling air traffic controllers and pilots to exchange messages in digital format. The airspace of the Azerbaijan Republic spans 165,400 square kilometers,

with 86,600 square kilometers over land, and 78,000 square kilometers over the Caspian Sea*.

Farhan Guliyev, Director, AZANS, said: “We are immensely proud to have selected this technical solution, to adopt air/ground datalink services.”

SITAONAIR will provide pre-Future Air Navigation Service (pre-FANS) comprising Datalink Departure Clearance (DCL), Datalink Automatic Terminal Information Service (D-ATIS) and Datalink Meteorological Information for Aircraft in Flight (D-VOLMET) air/ground communications services at the airport. It will also deliver its AIRCOMClever, AIRCOMevatis and AIRCOMevamet ATC ground-end systems at Baku airport tower, along with its Future Air Navigation Service (FANS), at Baku airspace control center.

Sky Prime to future proof its Gulfstream fleet with Honeywell’s protection plans It was announced in mid-March 2019 that Honeywell has been selected by renowned private aviation firm Sky Prime to protect its Gulfstream fleet of business jets. The Saudi Arabia-based firm has chosen the Honeywell Avionics Protection Plan and Mechanical Protection Plans to ensure that the Honeywell equipment on board its Gulfstream jets is protected to enhance performance of the aircraft and help to reduce downtime during repairs.

The Honeywell Avionics Protection Plan (HAPP) is a maintenance service program that offers full coverage for all Honeywell avionics. The plan is designed to help operators avoid unplanned maintenance costs and downtime by agreeing to a fixed-price annual fee, which helps operators handle unforeseen issues quickly to keep their aircraft in service. The Honeywell Mechanical Protection Plan (MPP) provides aircraft operators with access to rapid service and support from Honeywell-trained product experts for maintenance of Honeywell mechanical technologies.

SITAONAIR was able to announce in mid-March 2019 that it has exceeded Single European Sky (SES) expectations through its instrumental work establishing a multi-frequency European datalink infrastructure to increase air traffic management (ATM) capacity in the region’s pressurized airspace. As an aviation industry aircraft communications expert, SITAONAIR ensured the successful roll-out of the enhanced air-ground (A/G) datalink service needed to support airlines and air navigation service providers (ANSPs) with the implementation of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC).

Working with partners, SITAONAIR facilitated this transition by establishing a multi-frequency VHF Data Link Mode 2 (VDLm2 MF) network infrastructure between 2015 and 2018. The VDLm2 improvements have brought key performance rates closer to reaching targets stated in the CPDLC mandate, as set out by the Single European Sky (SES) vision. As a result, the rate of Provider Aborts – which occur due to sustained loss of end-to-end connectivity – have reduced dramatically, from peaking at 24% in 2014, to falling as low as 1% in 2018 in the airspace controlled by Eurocontrol Maastricht Upper Airspace Center (MUAC). Similarly, the measured transmission delay now exceeds the target set in the CPDLC mandate. Meanwhile, the number of weekly ATN (Aeronautical Telecommunications Network) CPDLC connections with MUAC, increased from around 1,000 to 7,500 in the same period.

The upgrade, made possible by SITAONAIR and key ATM partners including DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, supports Europe to safely manage increased air traffic volumes. This currently stands at around 26,000 daily flights, with levels set to double by 2020.

FREQUENTIS, Qantas and Smart4Aviation win IHS Janes Technology award for innovative route optimizing flight planning platform The Annual ATC awards 2019 on 12 March 2019 recognized Frequentis, Qantas and Smart4aviation for enabling flight efficiency and fuel savings. The awards took place again at World ATM Congress in Madrid to reward companies and projects across six categories for their work over the previous 12 months. Australian airline Qantas developed a flight planning platform jointly with Frequentis, Smart4Aviation and the University of Sydney, to enable efficiency and fuel savings, winning this year’s Technology award.

The Qantas flight planning platform (Constellation) can ingest rich data sets from external sources, allowing it to continually assess and adjust its flight paths while en-route, providing for the flexibility to fit with flow constraints, reduce fuel

consumption and emissions and increase safety.

35 years of being a flight deck favorite March 2019 marked an important milestone for Bytron Aviation Systems as the brand celebrated 35 years in the aviation industry. Bytron was originally formed in March 1984 by the late Richard Harris and his wife Irene. The history of Bytron in a few paragraphs

Bytron started in 1984. From the outset, they specialized in the design and development of innovative software solutions for the aviation industry Their first software solution, a strip printing program, caught the attention of NATS (the UK Air Traffic Service provider) and they became one of Bytron’s first major clients. This application was later upgraded to a fully-fledged Flight Data Management System (FDMS), the first computer-based system to successfully promulgate, transmit and receive AFTN messages.

Towards the end of the decade in 1989, Bytron software was used to deliver all air traffic control services for the UK which was a contract that lasted over ten years. The 90’s was a busy decade for Bytron as their journey into Crew Briefing, and Flight Dispatch really began.

By this time, clients included the UK CAA, who implemented Bytron’s newly developed AIS NOTAM Management System throughout the world. The firm’s software was selected by the Kingdom of Bahrain to run all air traffic and briefing services and our first truly integrated flight crew information system was developed, for the secure and audited aggregation, synchronization and dissemination of important flight data.

Moving into the Early 21stcentury, Bytron took Crew Briefing to the next level by launching skybook. It was a system that offered cloud-based access for the first time and by 2004 skybook could be accessed remotely via ToughBook’s as Bytron started the drive to reduce the reliance on paper in the cockpit. That first EFB solution, and the first on the market, actually went live way back in 2007and it proved to be so effective that it was bought by another major solution provider who went on to offer it as part of their own line up.

From this point on, Bytron’s focus was firmly on delivering the most seamless, intuitive, comprehensive solution to date offering a user experience that is second to none. skybook is now a multi award winning solution, using a mix of the latest technology and over 30 years of industry knowledge to deliver a range of class leading modules that are being used by a diverse range of clients across the globe.

In late March 2019, Azul Linhas Aéreas announced that it had become the first airline in the Americas to exceed modern flight tracking safety standards by embracing truly global, real-time flight tracking capabilities onboard aircraft, with SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM® FlightTracker. The Brazilian low-cost carrier has upgraded to SITAONAIR’s advanced cutting-edge FlightTracker option, which integrates AireonSM space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data from FlightAware®. This gives the airline enhanced awareness of the precise position, speed and altitude of its full airborne fleet, anywhere in the world.

SITAONAIR has now activated its enhanced FlightTracker capabilities aboard Azul’s fleet of A320s and A330s, Embraer 190 and 195s and ATR 72-600s. This was completed in November 2018, ahead of the official launch of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s Global Aeronautical Distress & Safety System (GADSS) 15-minute aircraft tracking standard. With the Aireon system, Azul will even exceed the ICAO’s 15-minute standard by receiving aircraft position reports at a standard frequency of at least once per minute.

Already adopted by airlines operating more than 400,000 flights every month, SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM® FlightTracker is a ground-based software system delivering vital global real-time aircraft position alerting to airline operations teams. The application aggregates the best available inflight position data from a wealth of sources – including Aireon’s cutting-edge space-based ADS-B data provided by FlightAware® — on a single aircraft position display. It can deliver real-time flight tracking coverage, even in the farthest reaches of the globe, including oceanic and other remote areas, without aircraft modifications. And coverage density has only improved with Aireon’s space-based ADS-B system.

The Aireon space-based ADS-B data system is hosted on the Iridium® NEXT satellite constellation, which consists of 66 low-earth orbit crosslinked satellites with an additional nine satellites in orbit serving as spares. New Taiwan carrier embraces next-gen connectivity with SITAONAIR Taiwanese start-up carrier, Starlux Airlines, announced at the beginning of April 2019 that it is gearing up for its commercial launch by announcing its partnership with SITAONAIR to bring next-generation inflight connectivity (IFC) to its passengers.

SITAONAIR will deploy its awardwinning Internet ONAIR Wi-Fi portal – powered by Link ONAIR over Inmarsat’s high-speed GX Aviation satellite network – aboard the airline’s A321neos and A350s. The deal means cutting edge IFC services will be available to Starlux’s first passengers when it launches in 2020.

Clean Sky 2 supports Safety Line and leading actors of the aviation industry in joining forces to reduce CO2 emissions As part of the European Commission, Clean Sky research program, aimed at a Greener Aviation, has issued a call for proposal for a research project to optimize aircraft performance through the use of Artificial Intelligence. It was announced in early April 2019 that the project was attributed to Paris based start-up Safety Line, specialized in Big Data solutions for aviation safety and efficiency, who named it ‘Perf AI’.

Safety Line is supported in this project by its long-term partner, the French national research institute for digital sciences, Inria, and has invited two airlines, Lufthansa and Transavia France to join the project advisory board.

In its continued efforts to tackle environmental issues, the European Commission launches Clean Sky 2

Clean Sky 2 is the largest European research program developing innovative, cutting-edge technology aimed at reducing CO2, gas emissions, and noise levels produced by aircraft.

By funding projects like Perf AI, this program contributes to achieve environmental objectives defined by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) in the aviation industry Artificial Intelligence to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the

aviation industry Fuel burn is affected by a number of parameters including weather and individual aircraft performance, which may vary from one aircraft to the other within the same fleet. The project aims at leveraging flight data to obtain Machine Learning performance models for the purpose of optimizing fuel burn. This also includes optimizing flight trajectories based on actual aircraft performance and more accurate weather inputs.

Swedish IT company AVTECH announced in early April 2019 that it has developed a very precise weather and wind data product portfolio to help aircraft fly as economically and comfortably as possible — without airlines having to invest in any new equipment. In a recent real-life test, Norwegian Air Shuttle reduced CO2-emissions by 2,000 tons over three months’ time last autumn, by using AVTECH’s services in the company’s fleet of 106 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

“We saved from one to eighty kilograms of fuel per flight, the average being 22 kilos, purely by optimizing the descent phase of the flights”, said Norwegian pilot and project manager Stig Patey. “The 10K weather grid makes it possible to avoid unfavorable winds at given altitudes during the flight and to start the descent phase at exactly the right moment. Our pilots have reportedly been very pleased with the easy to use service that in real life proved to be much more accurate than the standard weather systems.”

All of this was made without any new equipment in the aircraft, as all real-time calculations are made on the ground by AVTECH. “The timeliness and accuracy of our high-definition weather forecasting means that the normal pre-flight package is usually sufficient on shorter

flights,” said David Rytter, Chief Technical Officer at AVTECH. “On longer flights updates can be uplinked when necessary, since the files are very small in size. Now the partnership with Norwegian has deepened, exploring the climb phase of the flight, with part of the funding coming from the Swedish Energy Agency.”

World leading weather service

AVTECH’s 10K weather is based on the UK Met Office’s high-definition weather modelling system, and is calculated per flight by AVTECH’s patented algorithms, which are able to perform the calculations using only the essential data. The company has worked closely with the Met Office for over seven years and is currently the only company with access to the full weather database.

“Our Cray supercomputer gathers 215 billion weather observations a day from all over the world, which it then takes as a starting point for running atmospheric models” said James Guscott, Senior Account Manager at Met Office. “Each run our 10km Global model completes produces about 12TB of data and to make it useable for our current WAF service, we downscale this data to approximately 140km. With AVTECH we have developed a solution that allows airlines to benefit from the 10km high resolution source data by

application of a 4-Dimensional Trajectory API. The result is that our Big Data can be developed in to Better Data for airlines.”

“Weather has always been one of aviation’s greatest hazards, and it’s becoming even more of a risk as we continue to see an increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. As a result, it’s increasingly important that airlines have access to the most up to date weather information available to inform decision making”, said Emma Connett, Transport Business Manager at Met Office.

“We have a long standing strategic partnership with AVTECH and work closely with them to develop these services for the airline industry.

Good for climate and passengers

With an average saving of just 22 kilos of air fuel per flight made by 33,000 flights a day, the overall fuel savings would be roughly 700,000 kilos per day in Europe alone. This equates to a reduction of over 2

million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.

This easily achievable means of reducing CO2 emissions is something to which airlines should pay close attention; according to a brand-new study, investors are looking closely at how airlines mitigate carbon emissions and their impact on climate change. The study was conducted by Transition

Pathway Initiative (TPI), a group representing 40 investors with around $13tr in assets under management, and was presented on Engineering and Technology’s website.

“The good news for airlines is that AVTECH’s services use already existing onboard equipment”, said Bo Redeborn, independent aviation consultant and Chairman of the Board at AVTECH. “On a yearly basis it saves a lot of money and makes flights significantly safer and more comfortable for both passengers and crew.”

“Our service has already proven to be valuable for Norwegian and other customers, but we are still in the beginning of a paradigm shift”, said Sören Skog, Marketing Director at AVTECH. “In 2017 alone, more than 300 passengers were hospitalized for more than 24 hours due to accidents caused by turbulence, so using our high-definition 10K weather data can save a lot for airlines from different perspectives.”

I

n this article I want to share with readers what Citilink has achieved with its fuel efficiency program. First, though, it will be useful to explain a little about the airline. Citilink is a low cost carrier in Indonesia operating a fleet of 50 Airbus A320 aircraft. We are particularly proud of the awards that the airline has gained including a ‘Best Transportation Safety Management Award’ in 2017 from the Indonesian Ministry of Air Transportation; a four star rating from Skytrax as ‘Best Low Cost Airline in Asia’; and ‘Best Low Cost Carrier in Asia‘ from Trip Advisor. Citilink is also the airline with the best on-time record in Indonesia and 2018 ROUTE NETWORK theSCHEDULE secondFLIGHT best for on-time performance in Asia. Our scheduled route network (figure 1) focuses very strongly on the domestic market in Indonesia.

As far as cost per available seat kilometer (CASK) goes, Citilink is number two in Asia, a very important statistic for me as my job is to manage costs.

When looking at our fuel management program, we have made a number of assumptions including that our fleet of 50 A320s completes 100,800 sectors each year with 180,000 flying hours each year. We also assume that every 100 liters of fuel burned produces 233kg of CO2, 219g of CH4 and 23g of NOX. In sharing how we have managed to achieve our fuel efficiency targets in Citilink, I’m aware that readers will already know how to be efficient but might well face the same problem that we faced in Citilink: how to implement efficiency initiatives in the daily operation of the airline and across the different areas in the business. We have approached that challenge by focusing on how cost and efficiency can be driven across four divisions: Ground Operations, Maintenance, Flight Operations and Finance. (figure 3)

Ground Operations

This division focuses on supporting efficiency in the preparations for the flight, ensuring quick handling for each flight to reduce APU usage. We have created training, procedures and policies recorded in the Operations Manual and have pushed the personnel in the division to optimize efficiency.

Maintenance

We have developed a maintenance plan and worked to improve the time discipline for the maintenance schedule. Also we minimize the amount of fuel in the tank during maintenance.

Flight Operations

As readers know, with flight operations it is the pilot who is best placed to improve fuel efficiency but sometimes they don’t do that from concerns about safety and other issues. That is a challenge: to talk with pilots about their perceived barriers to efficiency.

Finance

Ensure that everybody and all departments who need them are supplied with up-to-date fuel costs information.

MAKING THE EFFICIENCY PROGRAM COME TRUE

Let’s now look at the steps that we have identified and taken to be able to realize the efficiencies we want.

Ground Operation and Dispatch — preparation

The first consideration for fuel efficiency is the AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MAY-JUNE 2019 • 30

accuracy and properness of the computerized flight plan. This would include using the most efficient routes. At Citilink, we only give the pilot that one most efficient route in the database: so, how have we managed that? In my experience, Dispatch won’t have sufficient confidence to discuss the efficiency of various route choices with the pilot so we remove any choice of routes. Each dispatcher can decide whether that route makes sense or not and can make changes, if need be, but have to record the reasons for any changes they make. Also, the head of the department should monitor any deviations each day and should be coaching their staff when there are deviations from the SOP (Standard Operating Procedures).

Our next consideration is to use the most optimum flight level, which is usually generated by the system, and then we also ensure the accuracy of the Cost Index. We try to recalculate the Cost Index weekly using big data with analytics about the weather, levels of traffic and fuel charges — in Indonesia, fuel charges are changed every week according to the $US

exchange rate. This is not led by the fuel efficiency project manager but by the appropriate department heads who work with their staff to make it happen.

We also endeavor to achieve an accurate estimate of zero fuel weight (ZFW) while computing the flight plan. As readers will know, deviation from the zero fuel weight can add 35 kg of fuel use per hour of flight for every 1 ton of extra weight.

We use big data analytics and the characteristics of Citilink’s routes which has achieved a big saving of fuel.

One big fuel saver is fuel tankerage policy which is used to optimize the difference of fuel price between Citilink Indonesia’s stations. The calculation is made every two weeks with the updated fuel price and already taken with the factor from the fuel burn per extra weight (1 ton fuel ‘cost’ of 35 kg burn of fuel).

Every airline has a fuel tankerage policy but we know that the tankerage policy is opposite to the company’s commercial policy because we always have to take into account the needs of cargo department as to the load. One thing to implement about fuel tankerage is we have a base calculation for the company plus we incorporate understanding about our route characteristics. Each place we fly to is different with different characteristics for passengers and different cargo revenues.

So for every route we can decrease or increase the weighting for the fuel tankerage.

On our busiest routes we are confident to increase the fuel tankerage but on the routes to smaller cities, we are not confident to increase fuel tankerage.

Flight Operation — Engine Start and Taxi

Actions taken to improve fuel efficiency in this section are actions that the pilot can take but the company can develop a policy with guidance on how to make it happen, and we can share experience.

Citilink has a policy of single engine taxi but not for all flights and it can cause other problems such as not being good for the engines and sometimes increasing the noise levels for passengers. So we implement this policy if the estimated take-off weight is less than 65,000kg and if the aircraft is going to China. In fact, one minute of single engine taxi out per sector saves 430,000 liters of fuel per annum. We have identified five areas on which Flight Operations should focus in the SOPs. One is limiting weight, then limiting thrust, checklists, engine start sequence and stabilization times. This is our responsibility and we incorporate advice from pilot management especially as regards the flight standard; also we collaborate with the flight operations department to create the SOP

Flight Operation — Take off

Looking now at ‘Flex Thrust’ Normal Operating Procedure; Citilink does not have a procedure for reduced take-off but only for flexible take off. Our system can compute the most accurate flexible thrust take off. We have built the system to do this because, when we checked in line operations, we saw that pilots sometimes forgot to make the necessary corrections. Flight Operations — Approach

We also got what we wanted regarding SID or STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route). And we collaborated with other airlines to make it happen so that, at some airports, where they didn’t use RNAV (Area Navigation) arrivals, we suggested they change to RNAV arrivals, reducing IFR arrival distance by 4 miles and saving 50 liters of fuel.

We use decelerated approaches as normal SOP for the Airbus A320 but maintain the speed profile of the aircraft using flap/gear selection according to altitudes which, again used on one thirds of arrivals, saves 4.5 million liters of fuel each year. meet several objectives. It reduces noise, it reduces overall sector fuel consumption, it reduces engine wear and reduces maintenance costs. Currently 85% of A320 family departures are ‘Flex Thrust’.

The next contributor to fuel efficiency is to depart in the direction of flight. We communicated with the other parties like the ATC (Air Traffic Control) controller to try to get a direct route for departure and tried to get a new SID (Standard Instrument Departure). The ATC also likes this if we can give them information to reduce traffic levels in the sky. So there is the opportunity to give the information and to advise ATC how to reduce air traffic during approach or landing. These are important bearing in mind that airborne fuel flow is six times more than for ground idle so that the fuel burned in 18 minutes of taxi will be equivalent to only three minutes when airborne.

Next, we use ‘pack off — take off’. This is more extreme for me because, to implement this, I removed the ‘pack on’ connection on the performance chart leaving only ‘pack off — take off’ with no option for ‘pack on’.

And, like many readers, no doubt, we also have a policy to minimize APU use. The APU on the Airbus A320 uses 110kg of fuel per hour. At Citilink we aim for 30 minutes ground time so we were using almost 65kg of fuel for the APU on each sector. Now, we stop the APU ten minutes before the scheduled departure time for morning flights when the weather

is still cool so both the crew and passengers will still be comfortable. However, reducing APU use by just two minutes per sector saves 780,000 liters of fuel annually. Also, we delay starting the APU when arriving until when the aircraft reaches the parking stand. The APU uses six times as much fuel as mobile ground support equipment so, on some routes, we replace the APU with ground support equipment but not on all routes because there is limited ground support in some stations.

Flight Operation — Climb

Citilink will reduce the climb profile. A default has been set-up in the MCDU (Maintenance Control and Display Unit) to be 800 and 1,000 and 1,500 feet.

Take off fuel burn is three times that during taxi (see above). Climb profile has been tailored to the direction of flight for turns limited by altitude due to noise abatement requirements. We use V2 + 10 to 3,000 ft. AGL (above ground level) for altitude restricted SIDs when the departure runway is more than 90° from the direction of flight. Used on one third of departures, this saves 3.2m liters of fuel each year. A challenge in Indonesia is that airports are not always as they are in other countries — there are often mountains in the proximity. So we decided on the new departure procedure that Flight Operations Control (FOC) uses and we collaborated with the ATC controllers to get what we wanted.

Flight Operations — Landing

We have implemented reduced flap landing as normal SOP if the runway length is more than 2,500m, this is mandatory. It delivers quieter approaches and, if used on one third of landings, saves 3m liters of fuel each year. Idle reverse is normal SOP for our pilots thus avoiding using reverse thrust if we’re landing on a runway longer than 2,500m. This policy means quieter landings and reduced carbon brake wear as well as reduced engine wear and maintenance costs and, as before, if used on one third of landings saves 1.2m liters of fuel per year.

Notwithstanding all of the above, we still will rely heavily for our fuel efficiency strategy on maintenance and reducing the weight of the aircraft. We have identified a number of changes that will help to achieve weight reduction. First, the removal of one oven because we’re a low cost carrier so we don’t need two ovens and can save 20kg of weight by that removal or save 40kg by removing both ovens. We’ve also removed the life rafts which are only for ETOPS (Extended Twin Engine Operations) and have reduced the quantity of water on board during a flight according to the flight duration; if it’s less than one hour, we halve the quantity of water carried and on a one to two hour flight, we only carry half the quantity of water for each lavatory.

Up to September 2018, we were just ahead of our fuel saving target which is a saving of 14,000 tons of fuel for the year and, by September, we had reached 12,700 tons with three months still to go.

O

ur aim in this article is to give readers a brief insight into the future of documentation using the example of the Lufthansa CityLine solution. Readers will be familiar with the principles of making the cockpit paperless. The focus of the following will be on operational documentation, i.e. all the documentation that the crew needs for their daily work.

LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

As the only passenger airline sharing Lufthansa branding, Lufthansa CityLine has sixty years’ experience in short- and long-haul operations. The 50-strong fleet includes Embraer 195, Embraer 190, Bombardier CRJ900, Airbus A340-300 and Airbus A319, flying to more than 80 destinations with 300 take-offs per day. The airline has about 800 pilots and 1,500 crewmembers. It is a medium-sized airline with a very large and busy network.

PROJECT ONE — PROJECT AUTHORING Documentation starts in the Flight Operation Support office, where the procedures are defined. It is difficult to get people excited about innovations, new products and new processes — ‘never change a running system’. Although Lufthansa CityLine already had a digital solution, they wanted to enhance it further because they were searching for an all-in-one solution, and ultimately they opted for EFOM (Electronic Flight Operations Manual) from Lufthansa Industry Solutions.

In the past, Lufthansa CityLine always had to work by itself: they might have received a PDF from another airline but it had to be converted manually in the airline’s system and back end in order to be able to publish it to the crew. The document editor was a cloud-based tool that was only used by one airline within the Lufthansa group. The others used a different authoring tool, which made collaboration between CityLine and other group airlines impossible.

It was therefore in the interest of the group to introduce a common solution.

Nearly everything had to be changed in order for the collaboration process to work. Furthermore, the question of how to publish and deliver the documents to the flight crews had to be considered. At the time, the processes were outdated with a large number of modules for every device and with each document published individually, making them rather difficult to maintain. Last but not least, the authoring tool had to be more innovative.

Lufthansa CityLine had to find a system that was more efficient and consistent across all airlines. EFOM (Figure 1) is one such tried-and-tested system that meets all requirements and is easy to use — especially because it is used throughout the group and thus saves on work.

Import modules from manufacturers’ XML data make it easy to keep the documentation up-to-date — for example, quality checks can be carried out on mobile devices. EFOM

supports different target formats such as PDF for printing as well as for electronic, mobile and other interfaces. Audits can be processed in a simple and convenient manner using ‘one-click’ generated authority reports which can be exported as PDF or Excel files. That is a brief introduction to EFOM — but how was it implemented in this case?

Lufthansa CityLine and Lufthansa Industry Solutions set up a combined project team consisting of five people from each business unit. The main task, besides the integration and installation of EFOM, was to convert all legacy documents from the cloud system into the new format. Overall, 19 manuals needed to be migrated and everything took place over a period of 90 days.

In order to ensure that the project stayed on track and on schedule, there were weekly status meetings and every step was quality assured by Lufthansa CityLine. The work was all done between January and September 2018. In fact, the timing was perfect for CityLine as they were about to phase in a new aircraft, the A319, where the documentation already benefits from this new solution.

CASE STUDY: LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

The project meets all criteria. First of all, most airlines within the Lufthansa group use EFOM, and therefore they can easily share documents with each other.

Furthermore, the usability of the system is far superior to the old legacy system and, of course, EFOM is under continuous development with every improvement being shared with every customer, including Lufthansa CityLine. The required publishing process for individual goals is now quicker and easier compared to the old process.

All of the information above represents Lufthansa CityLine’s basic requirements, i.e. updating existing processes. That was all required for the purchase order but, in addition to those improvements, Lufthansa CityLine also gained some additional benefits as a result of introducing the new system.

The authoring tool EFOM also provides highly efficient document reference management, which is optimized for cross-referencing across documents — especially between legislation and operational documents. The links remain intact despite changes to one of the documents. Furthermore, an authority report can be created, which helps to prove the correctness of operation manuals to authorities.

The authority report has proven to be a very useful feature for auditing and is not typically expected from a tool that handles documentation. Finally, because cutting costs and streamlining operations is becoming ever more important, back-office time savings of up to eight hours can be achieved for each revision process. This is of great benefit to Lufthansa CityLine — which currently operates four fleets with nearly 20 revisions per fleet.

So far, Lufthansa CityLine has been looking at the documentation from the office and production point of view, but it is also very important to know what this does for the crew. At the time of writing, Lufthansa CityLine had very recently stopped providing printed versions of their manuals, so that all cabin crews no longer have to carry around folders containing hundreds of papers. It used to be a manual process that was quickly becoming obsolete in the modern world, and therefore a solution had to be found. Lufthansa CityLine’s cockpits have been digital since 2002, and all cockpit crew members have a tablet with an electronic library that is continuously updated. However, in the cabin, everything was still printed. CityLine therefore wanted to find a new way to deliver information to the cabin crew as well, and discovered the DocSurf Mobile crew library viewer — also from Lufthansa Industry Solutions.

DocSurf Mobile is a product that meets this requirement, as it allows aircraft staff to view electronic flight and ground operations manuals on iOS and Windows (standalone or via the Internet). The application simplifies the workflow for the cockpit and cabin crew both in the air and on the ground. It has an efficient search function and allows users to filter relevant information quickly and accurately.

Lufthansa CityLine worked closely with the cabin crew when implementing the new system in order to guarantee a smooth transition. For 20 years, they had been used to thumbing through the books, marking relevant procedures with a yellow highlighter pen and perhaps taking down some notes. This all had to change with the digital version.

This change is a process in itself and it will take some time before all the crew members become accustomed to it. The airline has tried to simplify the roll-out process and to introduce the system to them in person through one-to-one sessions in addition to the sessions with other crew members.

The iPad was selected because it is more convenient and easier to use. Furthermore, crews are allowed to also use the devices for private purposes, which is of additional benefit to them. All in all, the whole roll-out process has so far gone smoothly.

The solution is available on tablets, notebooks, smartphones and desktop PCs as well as on different operating systems. Personalized data can be synchronized on all of those platforms.

Lufthansa CityLine only uses the iOS application, which has a very intuitive user interface that is related to other similar applications. Some key features include portrait and landscape modes plus daytime and night-time modes for an enhanced reading experience. The solution supports all iOS specific features such as multi-touch gestures. Furthermore, the complete application can be managed using an MDM (mobile device management) system, which means that no special process is needed to maintain

the application.

The clean and intuitive interface of DocSurf Mobile can be seen in Figure 2.

At the end of these two projects, Lufthansa CityLine was in the perfect position to derive even more benefits from the product suite, because Lufthansa Industry Solutions not only offers the authoring tool EFOM and its viewing component, DocSurf Mobile, but also a document distribution and management system called DocAdmin. DocAdmin is the final link in the process chain from authoring to viewing. This was very important for Lufthansa CityLine because it means that there is no need for lengthy coordination procedures between solutions from different providers and no need for interfaces or discussions with regard to who is responsible for dealing with potential problems. DocAdmin offers a simple library management system for organizing the library, maintaining it and publishing it to users. As a result, distribution to all users is very easy, regardless of whether it is a cabin mobile device, web server or even in the background. In addition, Airbus documents were not supported in the legacy system, whereas in the new system, that is no longer a problem.

He is currently responsible for operational procedures, fuel-saving strategies, management of the electronic flight bag (EFB) and documentation control.

each crew member, it took roughly half an hour to sort their documentation each time it was re-issued after being changed: that is a total of 750 hours. It was therefore vital to speed up and simplify this process (Figure 4).

Sebastian joined Lufthansa Industry Solutions in 2011, having started his professional career in several technical documentation projects within MRO and Flight Ops across several roles, such as application developer, consultant and project manager. For the past two years, he has been responsible for the development of DocSurf Mobile, a web-based documentation viewer for flight and ground operations documentation.

When Lufthansa CityLine used the old system, they had to print a PDF of the documents. The next step was to manually check the PDF version, extract every changed page, make a note of the changes in a revision sheet for the crews, so that they knew what changes had been made, and then to put all the documents back into one PDF. This PDF was then sent to the print shop where a print preview was prepared then sent back by post to be manually checked for accuracy and quality (the process would be repeated if any changes were required) so that, even after seven days, the crews still had not received the revisions. The print shop produced and sent an individual package by post to each of the 1,500 crew members. Every crew member collected their package for storage in their folders. There could even be situations in which a crew member had to reorder documentation because of loss or they might have thrown away the wrong page. For

The first step in the new system is EFOM publication of the documentation and transfer to the document management system, DocAdmin, which is responsible for distribution to all 1,500 crew members. The documents are sent over with one click. Everything is up-to-date, revised and available for inspection by the authorities. In terms of time, what was taking 21 days with the previous process of distribution can now be accomplished in just under one hour with the new process.

Lufthansa CityLine is very pleased with the new software and the time savings they have been able to achieve with the new document management system.

They are proud of the fruitful cooperation with Lufthansa Industry Solutions and the promising progress of the project. Sometimes, it is worth changing the running system after all.

A focus on digitizing manuals for the global aviation industry Martin Lidgard is the CEO and founder of the fast-growing aviation software company Web Manuals and has previously founded and headed two successful companies in the IT sector in Sweden. Martin studied a Master of Science in Engineering Physics at Lund Institute of Technology. Having recently relocated to start up the company’s second office in the US, Martin now lives in New York with his wife and three kids.

Aircraft IT: How did Web Manuals get started?

ML: Web Manuals was founded as an independent company in 2012 in order to focus on digitizing manuals for the global aviation industry, following a spin-off from another software company with the same founders. The Web Manuals product was initially developed in response to several companies within aviation asking for a simple way to author and distribute operational manuals and other controlled documents to their organizations.

ML: Building and delivering mission-critical software for the aviation industry is probably one of the hardest, most exciting and rewarding endeavors you can embark upon. t’s always useful to be able to tap into the experience of others when undertaking any program, and it is in this vein that we’d like to share with readers the experience of Avion Express when implementing an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). As with any case study, it is always useful for the reader to learn something about the subject of the program being shared, in this case, Avion Express.

AVION EXPRESS

As the largest narrow body ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) operator in the world, in 2018 Avion Express reached its largest fleet to date of 18 Airbus A320 family aircraft. The airline provides services for clients in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia-Pacific. The portfolio of customers includes such blue-chip companies as Thomas Cook Group Airlines, Onur Air, SunExpress, Norwegian, Vueling and others.

Avion Express has been growing significantly over recent years, and the company strives to maintain its position as market leader while providing its customers with a consistently high level of service.

In Europe, Avion Express has an extensive network of flights to close to sixty destinations. Throughout the summer, the company locates its bases in the UK, Germany, and Turkey. In winter, while maintaining some of the European bases, Avion Express also operates in South America and Asia-Pacific to cover operations during a low season. Nevertheless, some customers prefer a ‘damp’ lease arrangement in which they sometimes supply their own cabin crew. That said, in the peak months Avion Express is able to provide their clients with over 200 flight crew and over 160 cabin crew.

The company is constantly growing. In 2019 Avion Express will operate 22 Airbus A320 family aircraft and is planning to reach 60 000 block hours. The company was awarded ACMI Operator of the Year 2019 at Air Transport Awards organized by International Transport News.

THE EFB PROGRAM AT AVION EXPRESS

For the EFB program itself, we’ll look at why it was needed, what solution the operator selected, how it was implemented and where Avion Express is today.

The need for a new solution — previous practices

Previous practices were based on the printing of all operational flight plans (OFP) and crew briefings which were quite lengthy with all the NOTAMS, weather information and so forth. Often, for a full return flight, the documentation was up to 90 or 100 pages. That was a significant amount of paper and it took time to get reports from the bases to Avion Express headquarters in Vilnius.

With the aircraft operating away from headquarters, it was hard to get the reports filed with a reliance on stations sending their material in on a regular basis. Therefore, all the documents were reaching the office with delays of seven to ten days or even longer for more distant stations. Furthermore, the process required a lot of manual inputs which led to clerical errors on operational flight plans and in fulfilling all of the recommendations. So, it was decided that the best solution was to move to a fully electronic process and to become more advanced in terms of IT technology.

By replacing all the briefings throughout the year to support a fleet of eighteen aircraft, Avion Express estimates saving around 700,000 pages of paper which equates to 80 trees saved every year, making a

The solution selected

Avion Express selected IFS as the flight bag provider and, at the same time, chose, in 2018, to switch from the cockpit-based iPads to personal iPads issued to pilots to support better operational awareness with crew members. IFS is now one of the cornerstones in Avion Express processes (figure 1) with connections throughout the API (Application Programming Interface) interfaces to all the other systems.

application and represent the flight path (horizontal and vertical) on the iCharts application in one click. And, later on, it will be useful to have the performance chart available.

What has already been achieved is that all the information from the system goes directly into all the systems which are updated on the spot so that when the pilots arrive, they switch on the routers in the cockpit and send all the post-flight recommendations to the flight operations department. So, whenever the flight has landed, it is only 10 or 15 minutes until Avion Express gets all the information about the flight — not seven to ten days later, as before.

As with any project, Avion Express was determined not to rush with the implementation but also divided the project into three phases.

A couple of the major connections, of course, are to the Ops Control System (Ops and crewing) from where the system pulls all the schedules, crew times and so on. There is also an API to the flight planning system, NAVBLUE, in order to show all the operational flight plans and pull out information from the flight planning system. For the future, solution providers suggest that it will be possible to connect chart applications from NAVBLUE with IFS iCharts application, as well as to copy the ATC (Air Traffic Control) flight plan and paste it directly into the charts application. Pilots will not need to push the ‘copy’ button and then ‘paste’, in order to place material on the clipboard; they will simply switch to the other

Phase 1

The first phase was commenced in September 2018 and, at the time, the EFB and IFS application was a secondary source of information with the paper OFP being the primary source. Around 900 flights were conducted using the system; all connectivity to other systems was checked and, after everyone was satisfied with the results, in about one month, the program moved on to the next phase.

With nearly a thousand flights in the phase, Avion Express was satisfied with the results that had been achieved, including getting better fuel predictions by correcting the flight planning systems. This allowed users to see whether the fuel predictions were correct and allowed regular real time data tracking, which has now become a standard practice in the company.

In October 2018, the program switched to phase 2 and EFB became the primary source for information while the paper OFP became the back-up.

constant process to further improve it. In practice, it has been clear that the solution is sufficiently flexible to meet the airline’s needs, can be customized, and it is not something simply off-the-shelf but can be designed by the user business to match their requirements with the ability to create their own work rules: making it the best solution for the client company.

SOME WORKFLOW EXAMPLES OF THE IFS EFB CHOSEN BY AVION EXPRESS

There are over 43 nationalities working in Avion Express so naturally there were some cultural issues to make the move from wholly paper to a wholly electronic system. To make the transition smoother, the operator decided to proceed with a parallel phase during which time the OFP was still printed but for reference only: there was no need to complete it but, for a short period of time, that helped pilots to feel comfortable because pilots are, like everybody, creatures of habit, and Avion Express wanted to make sure that everybody felt comfortable on the flight deck.

Phase 3

Moving on to Phase 3, in December 2018, after all the flights had been handled in the system for a couple of months, Avion Express totally removed paper from the flight deck.

BENEFITS FROM THE NEW EFB SOLUTION

Like any company, Avion Express has certain KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), targets and goals. In particular, it is important to be able to provide reports and information about block hours to the Finance Department to be able to charge clients in a timely fashion. Moreover, crew salaries also need to

be calculated. With IFS, the company has managed to ensure that all of the monthly operational information is received on the first day of the next month. Previously, due to the delays, all the calculations from the Finance, Operations, and Crewing Departments were also delayed, so EFB has been a real advantage.

Another important thing is that since flight operations now get the reports on a timely basis or in real time, it is possible to adjust crew flying and rest periods, as well as the next sequence flight periods right away. When the crew arrives at the base, the operator already knows that the next day they might have to be delayed by five, ten or any number of minutes. The system makes it easy to avoid situations when, due to a potential gap of a couple of minutes between planned and actual crew working time, a warning occurs before the flight, just after all the documents are received and all the information has been entered into the system.

As already mentioned above, fuel prediction adjustments have been made. As a result, Avion Express managed to get from several hundred kilos of difference on fuel predictions to actual differences of just a couple of kilos, and that is in just one and a half months with the new solution.

The platform that Avion Express selected was IFS’s iOS based solution but it is not a standard system.

IFS does not offer a standard off-the-shelf software solution but each version is designed for the airline or operator who will be using it: a unique and bespoke software platform. So, if one customer’s platform is being updated, it will not affect other customers. This also means that users can retain all of the customized workflows that have been created for them by IFS. So, this is not about how the IFS system looks but rather how Avion Express system has been set up with module workflow and content workflow.

The solution can be presented for use as aircraft assigned units with each aircraft locked to its assigned unit or it can be presented as flights on a personal unit with the actual flights for a specific crew member.

Depending on how the user wants to do it, the system can present the latest flight data as well as MEL (minimum equipment list) and defects data coming from the maintenance system.

There is also an overview section with data coming from the scheduling and crew planning system for review with a workflow menu system divided into ‘before take-off’, ‘in-flight’ and ‘post flight’. And then, if the user, for instance, goes into the ‘before take-off’ section’, they will have access to the briefing package on PDF just as information, which allows the operator to certify the system much faster because most CAAs prefer that airlines and operators actually have a copy of the PDF package in the initial CAA flight test phase, even though there is also an electronic OFP

(operational flight plan) which is better. But the PDF satisfies the CAA. And there is access to different functions like weather provided by the weather provider or by the flight planning system integrated to standard and non-standard interfaces.

Pre-flight reporting offers another fully customized set-up with a fuel planning page which can be quite simple and short or longer and more complex depending on the kind of missions the airline or operator flies. An ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) and ATC (Air Traffic Control) clearance note taker module is available in the pre-flight section plus in the in-flight and in the post-flight sections so that, if the pilot gets a clearance enroute, there’s no need to go back to an earlier stage to find this module. The ATIS and ATC note taker module can be run with finger notes or stylus notes and will be captured as part of the pre-flight and post-flight report. Avion Express chose that the pilots should use clean shorthand notes and write them in as a data report for the information they are receiving.

That’s available but not all airlines utilize it.

Then there are RSVM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minima) checks in the in-flight section of the system.

There is an electronic OFP (eOFP) where the ETA (estimated time of arrival) will be automatically calculated; displaying a red figure or pop-up alarm where the calculation shows a warning — if, say, it finds there will be insufficient fuel at one of the waypoints.

The next section is post-flight reporting, which is also customized with GeNDec (general declaration) and NOTOC (Notice to Commander) plus several e-Reporting modules in case the user wishes to register all their reports… the flight safety report, cabin security checks and so on. This can be provided in a separate eReporting module which can be integrated with the safety management system. There are many options and IFS integrates to about 45 different IT systems on the aviation market within flight planning systems, scheduling, crew planning, safety management, maintenance systems and so on. There is a sign-off page, also customized even though Avion

Express operates within EASA’s area, there are still EASA countries who would not allow sign-on based on username and password but who want a handwritten signature to support that and that can be combined in any way that is required. In many countries, it’s necessary to sign the walk-around check with a hand-written signature whereas the pre-flight report can be signed with username and password: while in another EASA country it might be the opposite but the flexible platform can deal with those variations for today or in the future.

There is a night mode for the display. Some airlines like a white screen with black or gray text while others choose the black screen all of the time; it’s down to customer preference.

BACK OFFICE ENGINE

The back office system has an OCC Overview portal where users can see all the movements on the EFB system so that OCC can monitor the flight plan data coming in, the weather, that the crew has checked in, that the pre-flight report has been submitted on time (if not, there will be an audible alarm and a pop-up warning). This helps the OCC keep on their toes when things get busy. There is a database where all the flight data is collected with the briefing kits, everything is stored for five years for clients and IFS normally hosts all data for all clients. A local-hosted solution can be delivered but usually the IT network system of most airlines are not, shall we say, designed specifically for fast two-way EFB data traffic. In the IFS environment, clients are not sharing resources and will have full connection speed no matter where the users are in the world.

There are many report options and possibilities, including to export all flight data into the client’s network, into their IT systems and with specific reports as Avion Express has done. It’s like a building block system which can be constantly worked on to get improved new features, new set-ups, new modules… it’s a system that will be the path to a paperless cockpit now and in the future.

The concept consists of two ruggedized 10.1” Panasonic tablets installed in the cockpit combined with a data integration center and a communication unit installed in the avionics compartment. OptiClimb is based on Machine Learning combined with Optimization and aims at reducing the fuel consumption through the use of flight data. Yearly, it means that for one aircraft the savings can reach $80’000. With 25 aircraft in its fleet, Transavia can save $ 2 M per year. It is a very promising offer for any airline.
