he AIP is pleased to advise that it will be partnering with Food Innovation Australia Limited to develop a National Food and Agribusiness Capability Map and we need your help…

Australia is well known around the world for its wealth of natural resources and the quality of the foods produces from that resource. While there is an abundance of capability in Australia throughout the food and agribusiness supply chain, wide knowledge of and access to this capability is limited. In addition, understanding and connectivity to the ancillary and support services needed to manufacture high quality foods tends to be targeted and localised.

While there are a range of capability directories that have been created, often held within differing industry associations, access to this information beyond the association membership is often restricted for commercial reasons. In addition, the majority of food manufacturing support manufacturers and providers are small to medium businesses with limited people and financial resources and connections, a position that restricts their ability to access wider networks and capabilities needed for support to their businesses.

This project seeks to provide a more coordinated approach and combined access to key information and services listings for companies across the F&A sector and supply chain by combining sources of industry connections. The combined information is proposed to be presented as a searchable national map of capabilities. The purpose of the capability map is to allow everyone in the industry access to information and capabilities across the Australian Food and Agribusiness Value Network and sector associations. The map will allow users to access the information and capabilities via an online searchable site that will also provide opportunity for owners of capability to promote their services to the wider Food and Agribusiness sector.

VICTORIAN BRANCH CHAIRMAN (TWICE), LIFE MEMBER I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE AIP SINCE: 1967.

S

ometimes when you enter a crowded room and quickly scan the faces to see if there is anyone you know; you see a complete stranger but think ‘an interesting person’ I must make contact. Colin Simpson was one of those types of people and he was more than interesting; he exuded friendliness and professionalism.

When I was allowed to join the Institute there were three Simpsons in the Victorian membership. My recollection of the other two is scant but our mate Colin has been front and centre and will remain forever in my fond memories. I was Secretary to Colin when he was President and we remained committee members together for many years.

Colin always had a solution for any issue bogging down the committee or annual general meetings. Suddenly his booming voice would shatter the quite with ‘gentlemen all we need is’ and sure enough the agenda item was closed to satisfaction. (For the PC no females were members until well into our existence).

One solution occurred at a meeting in the South Yarra Club. During the day, the management had sacked the kitchen staff. Colin simply walked down to a new store called McDonalds and came back with enough burgers for all attendees. The song I like to have a drink with Colin because Colin’s me mate rings true particularly for Ian Fletcher FAIP. Mischievous Colin always filled Ian’s glass of red to the point of overflowing and sat back smiling hoping he would spill some.

WHAT THE AIP MEANS TO ME: The AIP is a chance to be with, and learn from, fellow packaging professionals that make long-lasting friends.

EDUCATION IN THE INDUSTRY IS: Very important.

MY STRONGEST MEMORY OF SIGNIFICANT CHANGE WITHIN THE PACKAGING INDUSTRY IS: Too big to quantify.

MY ADVICE TO THOSE STARTING IN THE INDUSTRY: Enjoy what you do.

MY MENTOR WAS: Too long ago to remember.

MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT IN THE INDUSTRY: • Victorian Chairman twice.

• Distinguished Service Award for Victoria.

• Life Membership.

Colin always proffered that our meetings were best when fellow members presented. When presiding he would often have members stand and give a brief résumé. He also arranged many presenters and site visits using his comprehensive list of confreres. I attended national executive meetings with Colin and he was often instrumental in mitigating what was generally state rivalry. He pushed for the formation of a national office which remains a testament to his foresight.

Five AIP members joined the several hundred that attended the Requiem for Colin. His contribution to the AIP paled into insignificance when his brother David led the eulogy and detailed all of the groups that he supported up until his recent debilitating illness. David said “Colin loved boxing and packaging and Packaging representatives are here today” The first recorded use of hail-fellow-well-met is in George Pettie’s Civile Conversation, a 1581 translation of the Italian Conversazioni civile, by Stephano Guazzo. Stephano must have had a three hundred year vison span for he summed up Colin Simpson exactly.

AIP RUNS NEW ACCESSIBLE PACKAGING DESIGN HALF-DAY TRAINING COURSE

T

he AIP and Arthritis Australia recently ran the new Accessible Packaging Design Half-Day Training Course in Victoria which allowed attendees to become aware of the required design requirements and understanding the Ease of Use packaging design tools. It provided information on changing household demographics, meal preparation requirements and case studies from users. Attendees will learn measuring techniques, injuries caused by packaging and current consumer satisfaction levels with packaging accessibility.

The course offered an activities based approach, hands-on team exercises letting participants understand the constraints on current packaging designs for people with disabilities, arthritis sufferers, children and the ageing population. The day included working with the simulation gloves that have been developed by Georgia Tech Research University in the US and reading glasses from a UK researcher and testing a broad range of samples from across supermarket shelves. A special thank you to Michael Grima MAIP for running the new course and to Arthritis Australia for all of their support.

This course will be heading to New Zealand in October.

AIP CONGRATULATES CERTIFIED PACKAGING PROFESSIONAL

T

he AIP would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the latest certificate Packaging Professional for Australasia, Greg Robert FAIP.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE? I have been working with packaging for 47 years, starting as a QA Lab junior at Cottee’s Jam and Frozen Food factory in Blackburn, Melbourne. At that stage there was little specialisation, and we were involved in all technical aspects of the various products, including packaging developments and packaging performance management.

Moving on to Lipton Tea as Quality Manager I had the chance to develop some detailed packaging knowledge on various materials, some quite specialised such as tea bag filter paper, teabag cotton thread, staple wire and the newly launched Polypropylene overwrapping films. Whilst at Lipton I completed a Food Technology Diploma and the AIP Packaging Technology Diploma part time. This led to the role of Packaging Development Manager for the newly combined Rosella Lipton (Unilever).

I have also worked in Packaging Development Management and technical roles for companies including Wrightcel, CUB, Uncle Tobys, Goodman Fielder, Heinz, and Campbell Arnott’s, before joining James Ross Consulting (UK), where I worked on cost reduction and value analysis projects globally. This led on to the development of 4P Technical Services, and I am now in the 9th year of managing this Packaging, Quality and Food Safety consultancy / technical support service.

Being fortunate to work with these blue chip, diverse companies I have extensive experience across all packaging materials – corrugate, carton board, a wide range of flexible film applications, tinplate and aluminium cans, glass, PET and HDPE bottles, rigid plastics, and various closures. I also have a successful patent design in the marketplace, with a second one pending.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU APPLY FOR THE CERTIFIED PACKAGING PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION? The CPP accreditation adds a high level of credibility to 4PTS, especially to the packaging development, optimisation and training aspects of the services provided.

Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS ATTAINING THE CPP DESIGNATION TO YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL? I am never too old to learn, and having worked with all materials and across such a diverse group of employers, this was a chance to test my knowledge. The recommended text ‘Fundamentals of Packaging Technology’ proved to be an excellent reference as the basis of the CPP examination, and I will continue to use it as my day to day reference.

Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE CPP DESIGNATION FOR THE GREATER RECOGNITION OF PACKAGING PROFESSIONALS? Sadly the role of ‘Packaging Development Manager’ seems to be disappearing, with many Packaging Technologists now reporting to New Product Development Managers, who (in the food industry) are typically trained in Food Technology, not Packaging Technology. The result is limited coaching and mentoring for the Packaging Technologists, and limited career paths. Hopefully this is cyclic, and the Packaging Management role will once again be valued. In the meantime the AIP has the opportunity to provide support and mentoring through the Certificate in Packaging and the Diploma in Packaging Technology courses, and those gaining the CPP accreditation can take on the so important role as mentors and trainers within our wonderful industry.

WPO SUPPORTS THE CREATION OF IRAN PACKAGING INSTITUTE

The ceremony of signing the agreement between the new Iran Packaging Institute and a local bank.

T

he World Packaging Organisation (WPO), represented by its General Secretary, Keith Pearson, participated, in the end of May, in the official creation of IRIP (Iran Packaging Institute). The President of the new Institute is Afshin Fakhr.

“One of the first and most important activities of the Iran Packaging Institute was the signing of an agreement with a local Teheran based bank. The bank has committed financial support to the establishment of the Iranian Institute of Packaging School/College”, reports Pearson.

Part of the agreement includes the commitment of the WPO´s packaging education support and the first sponsored packaging education workshop will be run in Teheran, next August. “Packaging education is a priority for the Iranian packaging industry as the country prepares for the lifting of sanctions and the resultant export opportunities”, completes Pearson.

“And this is total aligned to one of our main pillars. Since its foundation, WPO has an educational arm with a broad mission to spread packaging expertise to the wider industry. The first initiative was held in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2013” reminds Thomas Schneider, President of WPO. In 2014, other successful training programs were held in Bali, Indonesia and in Tra Vinh, Vietnam; in the first part of 2015 the success was repeated in Jakarta, Indonesia. From August to December 2015, other programs were held in China, Croatia, Vietnam and Iran. “In fact, last year WPO committed to offering similar training programs in Singapore, Vietnam, China, Ghana, Nigeria, Croatia, Italy and Iran. The job is complex and has just begun, but the rewards along the way for all involved will be significant and long lasting”, completes Schneider.

According to Pierre Pienaar, WPO Vice President Education and responsible for the programs, “the workshops aim to equip participants with greater in-depth knowledge to tackle the challenges facing the packaging industry in the current environment and to prepare them for competitive advantages emerging in the greater Economic Community market.

The packaging training courses help to strengthen participants in packaging capabilities, providing a level of insight and understanding of the packaging industry that adds real and measurable value to careers and businesses”.

In addition to these programs, WPO also has packaging technology education programs based on the type of request received from its member countries. The duration of the courses varies from country to country, depending on requirements of that requesting country; normally it varies from 2 to 5 days.

NHP UNPACK TECHNOLOGIES THAT BENEFIT THE PACKAGING INDUSTRY

J

oining forces, the AIP and NHP recently hosted a site visit to NHP’s National Manufacturing and Distribution Centre in Laverton, VIC. With AIP members from across the country in attendance, it was a great opportunity to show industry thought leaders and technologists an insight into NHP’s operations, capabilities and offerings – in particular our OEM capabilities.

The visit included an interactive tour of the manufacturing plant, as well as the Solar Plant Room that houses the invertors and controls for the 97.5Kw solar system installed on the roof of the facility. The plantroom was showcased, along with the warehouse and logistics section where over 5000 line items are picked, packed and shipped each day.

In an effort to deliver a greater understanding of enabling technologies NHP can provide, NHP experts discussed a range of hot topics and how they apply to those in the packaging industry. Such topics included process design, product development, automation and MES technologies, including power programming and delay accounting. Acknowledging the overlap between the industries both NHP and the guests in attendance serve, NHP’s Business Development Manager – OEM, Les Cutajar, was conscious of the requirement for advances in machine controls and the on-going challenge to use equipment in the most effective way.

“At NHP we’re proud to assist customers, like AIP members, with the selection and application of innovative technology to complement their industry processes and functionality requirements”, Mr. Cutajar said following the visit. “With an asset like the National Manufacturing and Distribution Centre, NHP has the ability to display our comprehensive offering whilst ensuring knowledgeable staff are available to explain benefits we can provide different industries”.

HIGH PRODUCTION OUTPUT UNDER ALL CONDITIONS A combination of two KMD 108-36 E2/R twin-screw extruders able to produce PVC-U pipes at a throughput of up to 2000 kg/h will be on display – a feat made possible by the high overall system efficiency (OEE) with its process technology features that are designed to increase output.

By combining two KMD 108-36 E2/R twin-screw extruders, the amount of space required is reduced about one-third, which means a high production output even within a limited space.

“This system is of particular interest to processors who manufacture U-PVC standard pipes in large quantities and must place particular focus on cost-effectiveness. Higher output with a smaller footprint cuts production costs over the long term,” says Peter Roos, President of the Extrusion Technology Division, describing the extruder combination.

Q1. WHY DID YOU JOIN THE AIP? WHAT BENEFITS DO YOU? BELIEVE THE AIP OFFERS ALL THEIR MEMBERS? ANHELY: I joined the AIP because I think it is a great opportunity to be involved in the Packaging world and to know what the new trends are: Especially when we talk about sustainability, as it is one of biggest challenges we have nowadays. I also believe that being part of the AIP will expand our networking and we can be part of important events, not only for Packaging, but also for fields related to it.

MAHARAGE: The AIP is the leading Professional Association in Australia specialising in packaging and packaging related industries. It helps members as well as organisations to enhance their knowledge, technological information and become aware of latest innovations. I personally believe that the recognition attained as a member of AIP (MAIP) is highly valued and as we work with other organisations and professionals. It plays an important role in getting to know experts and building solid alliances.

Q2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE? ANHELY: I have been working in the packaging’s world for more than 10 years in different areas such as quality, production and R&D. One of my areas of expertise is leading packaging development projects for new products as well as improving cost and packing operations.

MAHARAGE: My technical commercial experience, as of now, is about 26 years in the industry. I have spent 9 years engaging in import/export packaging. I was involved in production, material planning and procuring and Packaging designing for 4 years.

Since 2003, I have been a supplier of raw materials, mainly films, solvents and adhesives, to companies manufacturing flexible packaging. I also have expertise in all aspects Maharage Janaka Perera MAIP of the supply chain in the industry.

Chief Operations Officer Waml Group Limited – NZ Q3. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB ROLE AND WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES? ANHELY: As an R&D product and packaging manager, I am responsible for driving innovation, productivity and renovation projects, as well as packaging assemblies and products, ensuring their execution in the factory. Main Responsibilities: • Deliver new products and packaging developments within business objectives: cost, quality and time.

• Bring product development expertise to ensure successful and consumer-preferred products.

• Scale up / industrialisation and launches conforming to project brief and specifications.

• Research and develop new packaging materials, shapes and assemblies in support of the portfolio of brands and products.

• Deliver technical guidance and packaging engineering support to the business units.

• Accountable for the creation of the packaging and product specifications • Participate or lead industrialisation and pilot plant tests: record process and product parameters, data collection and analysis, report observations and recommend next steps.

• Organise and conduct transport trials.

MAHARAGE: I am currently working as Chief Operations Officer of WAML Group – NZ. I have been assigned with the following responsibilities; strategic planning, establishing visions and goals, simplifying management processes, establishing focused responsibility and competitive benchmarks to improve performance and restructuring & reorganising to improve competitiveness. I’m also in charge of supervising and monitoring new company projects.
