AIP presented session during Waste Expo Australia: New Program designed to help businesses adopt the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) WHEN: 27 October 2022 WHERE: Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre WHAT: Hear from a consortium of leading industry associations about how they are working on a new campaign to empower small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to start using the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) on their packaging which will in turn guide their customers how to recycle correctly and help push Australia towards achieving the 2025 National Packaging Targets. The program is being delivered in a four-way partnership with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), the National Retail Association (NRA), and the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) and the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO). This project received grant funding from the Australian Government, which is committed to helping all SMEs put the ARL on their packaging and help customers recycle correctly.

Come and hear from the lead associations in this project who will collectively discuss the new SME ARL program, why it is important to the businesses, their customers and the wider industry. WHEN: 8 November 2022 WHAT: Australia is a standout producer of high-quality food that the world wants – yet one-third of all food produced is ultimately wasted. 7.6 Million tonnes of food is lost or wasted in Australia each year; which equates to 312 kg of food wasted per person. The Federal government is addressing this serious issue with the development of a National Food Waste Strategy to halve food that is going to landfill by 2030, the establishment of Stop Food Waste Australia and the recent launch of the Australian Food Pact. Working in collaboration with these programs is the Fight Food Waste CRC which brings together all areas of the value to chain develop, design, innovate and research ways to improve food loss and waste. The CRC provides the science-based evidence and research that the industry needs.

Stop Food Waste Australia and the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre’s vision is an Australia without food waste.

This webinar will explore the key challenges and opportunities of reducing food waste in Australia, including the important role Save Food Packaging plays, the strength of industry collaboration through the Australian Food Pact, and the latest industry and research insights.

The AIP is proud to be a core participant of the Fight Food Waste CRC and has developed research and Save Food Packaging guidelines for the industry. In addition the Institute is a supporting signatory to the Australian Food Pact and a founding partner of Stop Food Waste Australia.

I

t is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) advises one of our key foundational Members Emeritus Professor Harry Lovell, OAM, FAIP passed away on the 12th of September 2022. Harry has closed his final packaging textbook after 92 amazing years after devoting his entire life to furthering education; starting in the UK and then through the AIP in the Australasian region.

Harry’s prime focus in life was to impart technical packaging knowledge to anyone who needed assistance and to ensure that everyone in the industry had the opportunity to be trained and educated. Many in the industry know Harry from their time at Gatton College where he was their lecturer and others were lucky to have him as a tutor for the Diploma in Packaging Technology or Certificate in Packaging degrees; others just met him at one of our many training courses or conferences. Harry’s technical knowledge and packaging expertise was unparalleled and his kindness and grace was second to none. So many of us have memories about passionate technical discussions and debates with Harry in the corners of a conference and how you always walked away learning something new.

Harry’s esteemed career is so extensive over such a long period of time but some of the highlights include: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Receiving the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented in Australia in front of his peers (2018) Receiving an Order of Australia for his work with the packaging industry, in particular for the AIP. Harr y was one of the key people that were instrumental in reinvigorating the Australian Institute of Packaging, not only as an education and training professional body, but also a business unit during his terms as National President in the 1990s.

There is little doubt that without his hard work, which was usually in a voluntary capacity, the AIP would not be in existence today. There are several thousand Australians with a better understanding of packaging, food science and food safety as a result of Harry’s teachings.

There will never be another Harry Lovell and we hope that he knew how much he meant to all of us in the industry. He was a mentor to so many and will be sadly missed.

We invite all of our Members to share with us their memories of Harry as we would like to pass them on to his wife, son, daughter and grandchildren.

Message from Jason Fields FAIP, CPP - President, AIP I was lucky enough to talk to Professor Lovell about a dozen times, I wish I had made more of an effort over the years, but that is life.

Many of you know him better than I did, but my take on him was he was first and foremost an educator, always keen to impart knowledge, while also happy to listen to others pint of view.

I think of him as the father of packaging in Australia and it is not an overstatement to say, without Harry and George the AIP would not exist today, they resurrected it from the dust in the 90’s and turned it into the thriving institute it is today, an institute which lives up to its mission of being the Peak Professional Body for Packaging Education & Training in Australasia.

A conversation with Harry, could easily turn into a debate, he held strong views on not just packaging science, but packaging and its place in society and the environment and was never scared to challenge the status quo and push for change. A conversation or debate with Harry was always a learning experience, experiences which I value to this day I was lucky enough to be at the 2018 WorldStar Packaging Awards, which were held as a part of the AIP National Conference. Emeritus. Prof Harry Lovell, OAM, FAIP attended the evening with his wife Nora and son David and received his Lifetime Achievement Award to a 500-person standing ovation.

Simply Harry was one of a kind and will be dearly missed by all whom were lucky enough to know him.

Message from Prof. Pierre Pienaar, FAIP, CPP – AIP Education Director and President, World Packaging Organisation My absolute highlight as WPO President has been presenting the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) Lifetime Achievement Award to Harry in my home city of the Gold Coast in 2018, in front of all his packaging friends and peers.

Harry was so intentional, and education focussed.

He had a wonderful passion about ensuring that more were educated in packaging technology.

He led by example and never wavered from speaking out when needing to get his message across. His heart and soul was in packaging and this shone through during his many years as leader of the Education Team at the AIP. He always took the time and trouble to methodically and passionately explain about "all things packaging". Nothing was too much trouble.

I am pleased to have been his understudy for many years before taking over from him in 2008 as the leader of the AIP education team, when he retired.

Message from Nerida Kelton MAIP, Executive Director, AIP I was one of the lucky ones who spent close to 20 years alongside Harry. He was the second person I ever met in the AIP, after George Ganzenmuller, and the two of them believed that bringing me into to the AIP would help grow membership, raise the profile of the AIP within the industry and improve the event management of the Institute. I am proud to say that the AIP is stronger today thanks to an amazing team of people and it all started with two people believing that change was needed for the survival of the Institute.

Everything that I know about the AIP, how it should be ‘steered’, the direction it should be heading in, the core focus of what the Institute is all about came from Harry. He always reminded me that we are just looking after the legacy that is the AIP, that people must leave their egos at the door and that we have to ensure that at its core the Institute assists packaging professionals to receive education and training whenever and wherever they need it. He also taught me that we learn something new everyday and that you must be open to gaining new insights and perspectives on the world of packaging.

Nothing was too much trouble for Harry. He was always there to help, to provide advice, offer guidance and support. The knowledge that he had about packaging and food science was second-to-none and so extensive it used to blow me away. The stories he told were fabulous and I was in awe of the intelligence that he had. He was also a lot of fun to be around, and I have nothing but wonderful memories of our time together. My heart is heavy today, but I am lucky to have met Harry. I truly believe he would be looking down on the AIP right now and would be proud that we are about to celebrate 60 years of providing education and training for the packaging industry.

Vale Emeritus Professor Harry Lovell 1930-2022 I had the great pleasure to work with Harry over many years as I came through the ranks of the Australian Institute of Pack aging and remain grateful for the many invaluable moments of quiet advice, counsel and mentorship that he provided so strategically. Harry always had a fire in the belly and was an ardent and passionate champion of so many causes, but especially for the prosperity of packaging technologists like the members of the AIP and the industry at large.

His contributions to education in this field, I suspect, are unparalleled. He was fearless and was always the provocateur in order to stimulate positive change at all levels of industry, academia and government. He was in the end a lovely man who was always held fast to his principles. I will miss him like I am sure, all who had the privilege to know him.

My condolences to the Lovell family and best wishes for the service today. Hopefully we can all take some comfort that Harry lived a big life and I am sure he was fired up and passionate until his last day.

Rest in peace Harry.

The bits that don’t often get mentioned are the inspiration that Harry has given to others, including myself, and the mentoring role he has played to so many. There is little doubt that the AIP would have disappeared had it not been for Harry and George’s combined efforts but again little mention of that is made. I count myself lucky to have crossed paths with Harry and of course his support team Nora.

I remember going to a meeting with Harry at Ai Group. They had been given money for packaging training but had no idea what or how to deliver it.

Harry suggested I look after the “project” (he knew I needed a nudge) and I did, but it was Harry who got the ball rolling and set up the opportunity – all I did was follow Harry’s guidance.

A sad time for the AIP.

Message from George Ganzenmuller FAIP, CPP – Past President AIP Where does one start with recollections and memories about Harry Lovell. Harry has been a significant player in so many areas such as academia, the food industry and of course the packaging industry but more importantly the people behind those dynamic fields of endeavour. I was very fortunate to meet Harry as I started my university life where he was initially a lecturer specialising in food, packaging and management fields. But then as life unfolded, Harry became so much more.

Harry was indeed a strategic thinker and had the great strength in understanding people and their needs and passions. For me personally, he helped me re-shape my career as I had initially started a food technology degree to become a Brewer but realised that was not where my true passions lied. It was Harry who encouraged me to look for alternatives and supported my choice down a new path towards food packaging. That was just second year university and within a year Harry had introduced me to the Australian Institute of Packaging and a whole new life paradigm. In those same tumultuous years, I saw Harry grow in his academic career and take on the higher roles as Dean of Food Studies and facilitate the

transition of his faculty to being part of the University of Queensland from the Queensland Agricultural College where we were originally based.

There were also increased responsibilities with the Australian Institute of Packaging and its foundational drive to enhance the educational standards for people in packaging not only in Australia but also in the United Kingdom where Harry maintained professional partnerships with industry stakeholders from his earlier life and he continued to receive industry accolades there.

Harry remained a driving force with the AIP and maintained a dynamic network of experienced packaging professionals around Australia and this helped with collaborations at both a corporate level as well as a personal level. For example, Harry was actively involved with the APPMA and its involvement with the AUSPACK exhibitions as well as the earlier Australian Packaging Awards administered by the Packaging Council of Australia. He was a true statesman and always looked to create opportunities and synergies with like-minded organisations.

On a personal level, Harry was always there to help Members of the AIP as individuals, and this included being a tutor for the Diploma in Packaging Technology course, as well as career advisor and recruitment agent. Yes, Harry introduced me to the Diploma in packaging Technology. He also introduced me to work experiences in several companies and ultimately help me get my career started with my current employer.

 Memories of Harry Lovell In the early 1990’s Harry continued his active life in the AIP through his involvement with both state committees and the Board. As per usual, Harry had a great idea for me to consider; and yes I got recruited and whole heartedly joined to help Harry. Harry was passionate, not only about education options for individuals, but also recognition for those individuals who excelled. Many of the AIP’s awards have their origins with Harry.

It was an honour to serve with Harry at the National level of the Institute over many years where he continually and loyally advocated for the AIP to always focus on growth strategies where education was the central platform. He was courageous and supportive as President of the AIP embracing new ideas from the newer generations coming into play within the membership such as the expansion of training opportunities such as the Certificate in Packaging, new short courses and the resurrection of the national conferences.

Harry had to deal with many challenging years in the Institute through some periods of structural and financial change and but was able to navigate those with dignity and professionalism. His strong relationship with Ken Howard, the AIP’s National Secretary for many years was central there.

In the subsequent years and being true to his passion about helping people, Harry continued to support the development of the AIP and especially the Institutes education team which has constantly grown in capability and capacity. Harry would be chuffed with just how much the Institute’s capabilities and reputation has grown under the education team led

by Pierre Pienaar, Ralph Moyle and Nerida Kelton. It was certainly befitting that Harry was recognised with an Order of Australia for his significant and sustained contribution to the Australian Packaging Industry.

For those of us who knew him; Harry will always be with us; always there as a source of inspiration, a selfless gentleman who could relate across the generational divide, with fond memories of a mentor; and indeed, a friend.

Messages from AIP Members Harry was a beacon of light, for the AIP and for its members, including me. He was inspirational. Heartfelt condolences to Mrs Lovell and the extended family.

A sad day. I too have known Harry for many years and he helped me over the hurdle of thirty years of (relative) job security to the challenging world of consulting. I also thoroughly enjoyed working with Harry on the Packaging Council of Australia ‘The Pack Pack’ which is an Education Kit for Primary Schools. I particularly value a handwritten spread sheet that Harry put together, listing the history of every packaging medium known to mankind. Harry Lovell, Rest In Peace.

Harry and I had a common interest beyond Packaging. Over the years we had many discussions about the development of containerised freight logistics. Harry had the innate ability to impart knowledge at the level he determined the receiver to understand. His life achievements were well earned and truly deserved.

He certainly was the strong face of the AIP in every regard.

Messages from AIP Members Harry was one of my Food Technology degree lecturers at QAC in the mid-1980s – the subject was related to processing line and factory design. Harry has the distinction of setting the only exam that I have failed in my life. The entire class failed the exam. Imagine our horror when we turned over the mid-term exam papers and realised that not one of the questions related to what had been discussed in the class or designated reading material.

When asked why he had set those particular exam questions, Harry’s response was that he expected his students to read around what had been discussed in the class. The exam questions related to information he thought we should have acquired after class by reading widely beyond the basic subject material requirement.

We had all became aware of Harry’s expectation that his students should be curious and develop a wider understanding of whatever was covered in class; that we should appreciate that what was discussed or read as coursework was just the beginning of knowledge.

Early in my packaging career I attended a course run by Prof. Lovell on the basics of food technology. It sparked an interest that drove my ensuing time in the industry. I am grateful for the inspiration. RIP oh great one!

Messages from AIP Members I first met Harry around 30 years ago when he offered to tutor me for the Packaging Diploma. I began the course but my studies stalled after I took several Food Technologist positions and had to focus on them. Around 15 years later I decided to resume my studies with a group of Packaging Technologists at Nestle.

Harry was brought in to inspire us. I was so pleased that Harry remembered me, and continued to help me, even after I left Nestle to move to South Australia.

He was so generous with his time and knowledge. He was truly passionate about packaging and education, and he was kind. My condolences to his family.

I always remember my final, final year exam. There was no exam book. At the start of the exam a piece of paper was handed out that said we had a shift of biscuits that were out of spec on water. No food safety issue. The truck was waiting to ship them. What do you do and why? 20 min in the examiner came and interrupted the writing with another slip of paper saying a customer now had a complaint on soft biscuits bought in the store - what do you do and why? We had to stop answering the first question and move on to the next.

That type of interruption continued for 3 hrs! Harry was at pains to help train us so that what was knowledge only, we had an approach to use in practice. A philosophy I’ve used with many hires over the years.

The world of packaging has lost a great leader, teacher and inspirational man. Harry was a great mentor to those trying to understand the use and benefits of packaging. RIP Harry Lovell.

Prof. Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP recognised with Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame Award

T

he Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) are pleased to advise that Prof.

Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP, Education Director for the Institute and President for the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has been recognised by the PMMI in the United States with a Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame award.

The Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame recognises career packaging and processing professionals for their significant contributions to the industry and education. The honour, which PMMI coordinates, has been awarded since 1971.

Past inductees are packaging leaders who have dedicated themselves to the industry through expanding knowledge and volunteer leadership and have personally advanced the field of packaging.

Prof Pierre Pienaar MSc, FAIP, CPP Pierre Pienaar’s interest in packaging started in 1984 after having studied pharmacy. Soon after joining a large pharmaceutical company, Pierre became concerned about a number of packagingrelated issues in the pharmaceutical world. This combined field has taken him to the far corners of the world, always involving one or other aspects of research in packaging.

Outside of his role as the AIP Education Director where he is responsible for the education and training portfolio of the Institute which includes the Diploma in Packaging Technology, the Certificate in Packaging, the Fundamentals in Packaging Technology, the Certified Packaging Professional program and the Master of Food & Packaging Innovation he also is a lecturer and trainer in the WPO.

Pierre lecturers in the technology and science of packaging at 11 universities and institutions around the world for the past twenty-eight years.

He is regularly called to be an expert witness in court cases, due to his extensive experience in packaging science, packaging engineering and the technology thereof.

Pierre has a Master of Science Degree (Packaging Engineering/Technology) from Brunel University, UK. He also has a Master of Manufacturing and Production Degree from University of Hertfordshire, UK. He is a registered Certified Packaging Professional, a Past President of the AIP and a Founders Award winner in the Australasian Region.

1. Tell us a little bit about the Hall of Fame award and what it means to you?

I am especially proud that I have been a President and an Education Director and in two of the largest peak professional bodies in the world for packaging training and education; AIP and IPSA.

The Packaging Hall of Fame recognises career packaging and processing professionals for their significant contributions to the industry and education.

It is a humbling, but also a proud moment to be honoured by one’s international peers. What I value most from this accolade is that it gives me more opportunities to persuade the global packaging industry that we must become more sustainable, as there is no Plan B. 2. How long have you been in Australia? What made you want to come and join the AIP? I have been living in Australia 24 years having emigrated from South Africa where I was very involved in their local packaging institute and a member for 15 years and was made an honorary member of the Institute of Packaging South Africa (IPSA). I had also been National President and Education Director of IPSA. I implemented the Diploma of Packaging for IPSA in 1989.

When I moved to Australia with my wife and 3 young children, I wanted to continue with my passion by being involved in the local Institute Packaging in Australia (AIP) and especially be involved in packaging education. My desire was and still is

3. When you were handed the reigns from the late Prof. Harry Lovell to become the AIP Education Director what did that mean to you?

I look back at those years prior to assuming my current AIP role where the late Prof Harry Lovell was so intentional, and education focussed. I soon realised that we shared the same passion about ensuring more were educated in packaging technology. I would say that Harry saw in me someone who would be equally passionate, and so began the friendship and years of understudy prior to 2008 when he resigned from his AIP role, and I was appointed to replace him. It meant an enormous amount to me that I could live out my desire in a role that could make a difference.

How important is it for a packaging technologist to undertake the Diploma/ Certificate and or Masters degrees through the AIP? Whatever packaging course you follow, Packaging education is where our future lies. The more that become knowledgeable in packaging, will produce better decisions in packaging technology, which leads to more innovation and better quality of life, through better packaging for more people around the world.

5. W hat are three things that you are most proud of in your years in the industry? e.g., within the WPO and also within the AIP. a) I ncreasing awareness of the importance of packaging across the world. b) Implementing packaging training and bringing it to countries that need it most. c) Through my various roles within AIP and WPO, being able to ensure that the message remains focussed and clear, that we need to make better use of the resources, ensure more recycling of packaging, and ensure packaging sustainability across the globe.

What advice would you offer packaging designers and technologists?

Ensure that every packaging decision that you make, be that at home, with your children and/or friends, as well as in your work, is always intentional and the same, and that is “to do the right thing with packaging”. Most of us know what is right, but we need to ensure that those we come in contact with packaging also come to understand that there is no plan B, and that we need to use our natural resources well, to ensure a sustainable life for all those that follow us on planet Earth.

Quest for the qualified packaging technologist How can the packaging industry work together to fill knowledge gaps and skills shortages, and help industry players become qualified packaging technologists, designers and engineers? AIP’s executive director Nerida Kelton has the answer.

I

T IS FAIR to say that if you were to graduate high school tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand there is no direct career path to become a qualified packaging technologist.

With no undergraduate degrees in packaging technology available through universities in the region, many find their way into the industry via an engineering, industrial design or food science degree. Very few people start their working life as a packaging technologist or engineer.

The challenge is that Packaging Design and Technology is in fact a science that requires the appropriate higher education and training in the discipline.

The flow-on effect is that even though packaging design is well and truly in the spotlight, there is a limited supply of truly qualified packaging technologists and designers in the region. Most of these talented people are already entrenched in a business and are not looking to leave their current role any time soon.

There is a juxtaposition happening right now in the industry and it is interesting to watch.

On one hand, the recent abundance of job advertisements for skilled packaging technologists, often thinly veiled as sustainability or procurement roles, is a clear sign that the industry is in desperate search for the ever-elusive qualified packaging technologist.

On the other hand, the high volume of applications every year

for the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) Scholarship Program indicates that many people are looking to upskill and become a qualified packaging technologist. The applicants are often young and new to the industry with limited income to be able to invest in a packaging degree. They see the scholarship program as the answer.

The sad reality is that there are not enough scholarships available each year for all of the extremely competent applicants.

So how can the industry work together to fill knowledge gaps and skills shortages? How can we help those already in the industry to become qualified packaging technologists, designers and engineers?

The solutions are available and have been for over forty years. As the peak professional body for packaging training and education in Australasia, the AIP offers an internationally accredited and

Skills Development AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS ABA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

globally recognised Diploma in Packaging Technology, a Certificate in Packaging, bite-sized modules wrapped up in the Fundamentals in Packaging Technology (FPT) course, and a Master of Food Packaging & Innovation.

The good news is that there’s currently a large number of students enrolled in the Diploma and Certificate degrees and many others working on learning modules from the FPT course.

The bad news is that these numbers are not high enough to meet future skills demand. We need to see more enrolments to ensure that the next generation of packaging technologists have the qualifications to one day step into senior packaging roles.

So, this is where you can help.

Consider working with the AIP to develop an internal scholarship program for your packaging team or pay for a Diploma in Packaging Technology or Certificate in Packaging degree for someone who shows promise in this field.

Another way is to offer your support to grow the scholarship program currently available in Australia and New Zealand so that we can collaboratively enhance the skills within the industry.

The ABA recognises the benefit of scholarships, as does the AIP, so we encourage industry to join with us to develop qualified packaging technologists, designers and engineers into the packaging managers of tomorrow. ■

The ABA, in partnership with the AIP, offers an annual Scholarship program for Australia and New Zealand.

The Scholarship program gives one eligible candidate the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology and a second person to undertake a Certificate in Packaging.

This year, Lea Reynolds AAIP, commercialisation manager Steggall Nutrition was awarded the 2022 ABA Scholarship to undertake a Certificate in Packaging.

For Reynolds, being awarded this invaluable opportunity means that she can continue to learn and grow as the industry changes and be confident in the information that she has learned to tackle challenges and to make informed decisions.

The second 2022 ABA Scholarship was awarded to Mark Saturnino MAIP, packaging specialist at Woolworths, to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology.

Saturnino believes that undertaking the Diploma in Packaging degree will enable him to truly fill in the knowledge voids and become closer to his professional goals and personal aspirations. Once completing his degree, Saturnino would like to be seen as an emerging leader in this industry and engage in discussing problems relating to the elimination of food waste and packaging waste.

AIP PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP

The AIP President’s Scholarship works in collaboration with the ABA scholarship program to help one additional person undertake either a Certificate in Packaging or a Diploma in Packaging Technology each year.

The winner of the 2022 AIP President’s Award is Azadeh Yousefi, packaging designer, Production Packaging Innovations.

AIP president Jason Fields said: “Having faced many challenges in her life, Azadeh came to Australia with a strong passion to become part of the packaging industry in which she is qualified to work in. Sadly, in the country she came from women do not have the chance to grow in the field they are educated in. Yousefi is thriving in her career since landing here and represents the future of this industry.”
