PIDA 2023: Domestic & Household Design of the Year

The Domestic and Household Packaging Design of the Year award recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging and/or materials, packaging within domestic and household items, toys, stationary, gifts, clothing, garden equipment and decorating.

"Functional design has a big role to play in domestic and household product packaging, with a strong focus on solutions that have high accessibility, enable ease of dispensing, and maintain product integrity throughout the supply chain," said PKN managing editor & publisher Lindy Hughson, who was co-host of the 2023 PIDA awards.

"Without losing sight of the all-important sustainability angle, the designs making the final cut this year demonstrate the application of highly creative ideas to deliver thoughtful, innovative form and structure with high convenience value."

And the winners are...

There are two Bronze winners – BioShield by Caps & Closures , and The Dirt Co Circular Refill Pouch Packaging by O F Packaging and Close the Loop Group ; while the Silver winner was Easy Pour by DuluxGroup – British Paints .

Topping the category with the Gold was 10:PM Mattress Box by Production Packaging Innovations (Karl Joyce, Anjelo Tsoutsoulis and Vaughan Taplin).

About the Gold winner:

10:PM Mattress Box is based on FEFCO 0201 style box with fully overlapped flaps and secure locking tabs. The box is designed in five sizes, and it is equipped with a pair of wheels and a strap handle for easy delivery and transportation.

10:PM Mattress Box is made of a recycled twinwalled corrugated board, which is an industrial grade board and able to create a robust structure providing enough cushioning to protect the product during transit.

The differentiating feature of this packaging is the easy installation and removal of wheels and handle. Visually impactful, the box has yellow (which is the brand logo colour) and white print on natural kraft background. The high-quality yellow flexo print on kraft board has created a "very catchy artwork that can grab customers’ attention", the company says.

This bespoke mattress box was designed to provide convenience for both the logistics teams and customers, and the unique design of the top and the bottom flaps creates an easy installation of the handle and wheels, which are robust enough to carry the weight of a king mattress.

The wheels installed in the mattress box are recessed by chamfering the edge between the front and bottom panels, which will enable the box to sit flush on the floor. This innovative feature not only increases the stability of the mattress box, but also optimises the storage and transport processes. This bespoke mattress box is constructed of 100 per cent FSC-certified materials (corrugated board) sourced from renewable resources. The box is fully recyclable, made from 70 per cent recycled material. The wheels and handle can be easily removed from the box by the customers for recycling. The ink used in flexo printing is watersoluble and non-toxic.

The Labelling & Decoration Design of the Year award is designed to recognise the addition of content to a pack which creates a unique or innovative appearance, function or communication. This may include labels, sleeves, tags, coding/markings, etching, directly applied inks or by any other similar process.
