Why Shorthorns? The Facts! LONGEVITY
DOCILITY
The ability to produce milk and calves for more lactations.
Quiet, friendly animals making handling easier and quicker with less man hours.
The average Shorthorn can produce up to 12 to 15 years of age, with a lifetime of 90000kg or more, still having good udders, feet and legs. Consistently in the top two percentile across all dairy breeds in the UK for lifespan which is a huge plus when worrying about the cost of herd replacements.
Temperament is ideal for running a smooth operation and makes milking and moving cattle easier.
FERTILITY & PRODUCTIVITY
The lowest incidence of calving problems of any breed due to large pelvic area. Thus, cutting out extra costs of manpower during calving and vet costs.
The ability to produce quality and quantity of milk, strong calves, without costly feed and vet bills. Fertility is consistently in the top end of all breeds across the country. Shorthorns have excellent fertility due to hybrid vigour. Shorthorns are better converters of forage and concentrates, making them ideal for low input systems and cost less in high maintenance systems. One study on Shorthorns showed they have the lowest feed cost and total dry intake.
MOBILITY & SOUNDNESS Less incidence of udder, feet and leg problems = less vet costs. Shorthorn inherent hardiness, hard feet and good legs rarely need attention on intensive or extensive systems.

EASY CALVING High percentage of births are unassisted.
SUPERIOR HEALTH The breed has good resistance essential for keeping a healthy herd and lowering veterinary costs.
VERSATILTIY This native breed is suited to a wide range of farming systems. Particularly successful in organic and extensive grazing environments. Ireland’s grass based system requires cows which efficiently convert grass to milk. Milking Shorthorns by their very nature are designed for these types of dairy farms.
