Report from the Chair, AIME Board of Directors As AIME marks six years of existence, it is worth reflecting on the circumstances which spurred Jack Manning Bancroft into action back in his days as a university student, namely: ▪

Australia’s Indigenous students remain the most educationally disadvantaged group in the country, and are well behind non-Indigenous students in measures of literacy, numeracy, writing and language; Improvements in education are known to have direct benefits in reducing the risk of poverty and its associated impacts on health and social status; and Completing Year 12, rather than dropping out of school early, significantly increases one’s employment prospects.

As a proud Indigenous person with a good education, Jack knew something needed to be done. So from humble beginnings back in 2005, with the support of a few friends, he boldly launched a Program which, by the end of 2010, was making a real difference. A difference not only to Indigenous high school kids, but also to (mainly non-Indigenous) university student Mentors, to over 30 staff, and to many more people who have been touched by AIME. Of course, as a nation we owe it to ourselves to rectify the poor educational outcomes for our Indigenous kids, particularly in the urban areas where they mostly live.

At AIME, with the support of many, we are pleased to say that we are making progress. As you will read elsewhere in this Annual Report, in 2010 the overall Year 10 progression rate was 87%, and the Year 12 completion rate was 100%, of which 38% were admitted to university in 2011. These rates are significantly above the averages for Indigenous kids nationally, and are also above AIME’s own targets and what was achieved in 2009.

Yet AIME seeks to have an influence on our nation which goes much further – to unite our proud cultures, both young and old; to create equality of opportunity through education; to build future leaders, both black and white; and to believe that “Indigenous” can mean “success”.

In 2010, AIME expanded into Victoria (at Monash University and RMIT University) and Queensland (at Queensland University of Technology). In 2011, we have launched new Programs in eastern Sydney (University of Technology, Sydney) and southeast Queensland (at Bond University and University of the Sunshine Coast), and now seek to mentor 1,250 Indigenous kids across 10 sites on the east coast of Australia.

And some of our existing Programs are starting to show real signs of sustainability, where local communities may soon be able to run the Programs themselves, or not need the Program at all.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank all those who have contributed to AIME during 2010, both with their time and their financial support.

During the year, we estimate that the monetary value of in-kind support donated to AIME was an extraordinary $1.6 million.

In particular we thank our selfless Mentors, our university partners, our high school partners, our corporate partners, and many other generous individuals and groups who donate their time, money and energy. We are extremely grateful, again, to Social Ventures Australia for assisting with strategic advice and funding.

Special thanks go to our wonderful staff, whose exuberance and “can do” attitude continue to be infectious. Their daily toil is making a huge difference. Big leaps took place during 2010 in the areas of policy and program development, reporting and multi-media. The AIME High Performance Unit was launched, which helps the staff strive for and achieve excellence in all they do.

Due to the ongoing generosity of our partners, we finished 2010 in a strong financial position, with a cash balance of over $1.1 million. Into the years ahead, this gives AIME a sustainable footing upon which to grow the quality and reach of the program, for which we currently receive no financial support from government.

We are conscious that there is so much more to be done. By 2020, we hope to be mentoring 6,000 Indigenous kids across over 30 sites Australia-wide. By that time, we hope to have accumulated almost 40,000 Mentor-Mentee experiences since AIME began.

As Jack identified over six years ago: with opportunity, anything is possible.

Report from the CEO It’s 6pm, on Friday April 1, 2011. I’m sitting in our head office in Redfern, at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence. We moved here in 2010, one of the many landmark achievements of that year. We now have a head office with windows!

As the pen falls on the pad, I’m charged with the task of introducing the AIME 2010 Annual Report, the year that was. An hour ago I sat down to start writing this and to be honest, I was feeling the Friday arvo lag.

That snapped in an instant when I read the Mentee, Mentor, and Teacher testimonials that are in this year’s Annual Report. Our new Communications Director apologised to me for the delay because of the quality and quantity of messages, it was hard for her to whittle them down to 30.

As I read through every single message, the energy levels and emotion spiked. This Program works. And what’s happening now, I wouldn’t say was beyond my wildest dreams, but I’d say that the level of excellence we are, together, producing through AIME, is exactly the level of quality these kids deserve. And that it’s surreal to see a dream come to life.

To the university partners, and our early corporate partners and individuals, I thank you for having the courage, vision, and belief that this is possible.

You have inspired, and built the capacity of a very young team of committed Australians. You are helping drive this Program to our mission of reaching 6,000 kids a year by 2020 AND having every one of those kids finishing school at the same rate as every Australian child.

What an honour and privilege we share as a team at AIME to be a part of this moment in Australian history, when our young people, both black and white, are stepping up to build an Australia they can be proud of. An Australia we can all be proud of.

At AIME we like to let our actions do the talking. We let the results speak for themselves.

This report will show you that when an Indigenous student joins AIME, they rapidly increase their chances of educational success.

The momentum is building, what we are seeing on the ground is the tide turning.

We are at the face of one of Australia’s greatest shifts in social change.

This change will happen in our lifetime. Our Indigenous kids are ready. Our young people are ready.

No student in this nation should ever be left behind, especially the children of the first sunrise. And no Australian can ever truly hope to build a rich national identity without a connection to Indigenous Australia.

This is our mandate, a mission for us all. A mission we will fulfil.

National Report In total AIME worked with 529 kids in 2010 from Year 7-12, a 60% increase on the number reached in 2009 of 325.

There were a couple of rules in terms of how AIME recorded the data: 1.

AIME does not track Year 7/8 completion rates as we are looking to build interest and excitement in Year 7/8 before directly engaging with them in Year 9. Please refer to the diagram on the next page which paints a picture of how this works in a practical sense.

AIME does not record, either positively or negatively, the Year 11/12 completion rates of sites that have not been involved in the Program for less than 2 years. After 2 years of the Program, the first batch of students to engage in our intensive Year 10 Leadership Program, are ready to finish Year 12. As such the Year 12 completion rates for 2010 are only referring to the AIME Program at the following sites:

AIME similarly only records university admissions from sites that have been in the Program for more than 2 years.

Whether AIME students in Year 11/12 attend AIME Learning Centres or not, once a student has completed either the Year 9 Program, Year 10 Program, or both, AIME considers them an AIME student for the duration of their schooling. Sometimes the impact of our work is much longer term than a one-year completion.

AIME does not measure completion rates, but measures the progression rates. For example it is not enough for us if a student finishes Year 10, we only record them once they have progressed to Year 11.

Our core change-making Programs are the Year 9 Interactive Program and Year 10 Leadership Program. It is after participation in these Programs that we see a huge increase in completion rates. Once we have a group of Year 9s, we can hold the group together on their journey to educational success.

A nice benefit of the power of these Programs, is that the Year 7 and Year 8 kids start to perform better in school, as they witness the older kids getting a chance to be a part of the Interactive and Leadership Programs. They don't want to miss out, and do everything in their power to make sure they are ready to go down the AIME slippery slide to success.

Hypothetical Progression Thermometer

The National Outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students outlined in the following table are sourced from these Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations reports: National Report to Parliament on Indigenous Education and Training, 2008 and Student 2009 Full Year: Selected Higher Education Statistics. Reference is also made to DEEWR’s Review of Australian Higher Education 2008 (Bradley Review).

The AIME Program results are in accordance with an independent examination conducted by AIME's auditors, KPMG. The auditors tested the retention and progression percentage of AIME Mentees at high school and admission rates of AIME Mentees at university on a sample basis.

Based on the data below 25.1% of AIME students will progress from Year 9 through to university. This is comparable to the nonIndigenous rate of 34.6% and significantly ahead of the national rate of 3.2% for Indigenous students.

It should be noted that AIME data is based on actual progressions while the National Data is based on apparent progressions. The apparent progression data may be inflated, particularly if students are taking multiple years to complete later years of high school such as year 10 and 12. A majority of states reported Year 9 to 10 apparent progression rates in excess of 100% indicating that some students may be taking multiple years to complete Year 10.

To provide some further context, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students comprised less than one per cent (10,465) of all enrolments in 2009, and 1.0% (4,832) of commencements. While the Bradley Review recommended to the Australian Government that a proposed target of “40 per cent of 25- to 34-year-olds will have attained at least a bachelor-level qualification by 2020.” It went on to say that this “will be quite testing for Australia as current attainment is 29 per cent.”

If we can continue to achieve over 30-40% in our Year 12 to university transition for AIME students, our Indigenous students will in fact be helping lead all young people towards the Australian targets.

Absolutely the most positive and worthwhile commitment that can be made during your time at uni.

I was a little nervous at first but the people at AIME and the kids themselves are the loveliest people, there was really no reason to be scared. Even if you don’t drastically change the future of your particular Mentee, you will be engaging in and better understanding Indigenous Australia and the issues we all face.

You will be surprised by the changes within yourself and the ones you see in your Mentee.

It’s an experience not only for Mentees but also Mentors. I’ve learnt a lot about myself as well as seen a change in my Mentee – we’ve had a lot of fun.

The feeling of accomplishment comes when you know that you have encouraged a student to do their best.

It’s an experience you’ll never forget, always cherish, and be forever grateful for just being a part of it.

To see a kid’s confidence and self respect change over the space of 17 weeks is mind blowing and only happens at AIME.

Favourite hour of the week.

It has been one of the most rewarding things I have done. Just to notice even a small change in your Mentee gives you a great sense of achievement. This small step can help to build equality in education for all Australians.

Thanks for opening my eyes.

You might be unsure if AIME is for you. You might fear that you don’t have the skills or experience. But AIME is for everyone. It’s an opportunity – a chance to learn and connect with Australian Indigenous young people.

As well as indicating the outcomes for the AIME Program across all sites, the tables below clearly demonstrate the impact of the Program over time. With each passing year, the number of participants increases as the Program becomes more established at both a community level and a university level. The challenges faced in the first couple years at any given site quickly dissipate as support for the AIME Program grows – mainly as a result of word of mouth. Year 9 and Year 10 Belinda Huntriss premiered AIME Brisbane in 2010, and delivered the Year 9 and 10 sessions along with veteran AIME staff member Clark Webb (Coffs Harbour Program Manager) they immediately set upon embedding themselves as leaders in the Brisbane community by delivering the highest quality sessions at Queensland University of Technology.

With tremendous support from all of the QUT Faculties, high schools and the wider Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, AIME Brisbane City quickly grew to become one of the most successful AIME Programs to date.

School staff noticed a transformation in students, as Mentors and Mentees alike grew in self-belief, confidence and realised that to be Indigenous means to be successful. Program sessions such as Drama, Hip Hop and letter writing, saw an increase in student confidence, particularly with public speaking and communication.

The Year 10 Leadership stream showed some true leaders, as Mentees completed sessions on Drugs and Alcohol, Becoming the first Indigenous Prime Minister, and learning about inspiring people, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

The end of year Graduation lunch at QUT was a great opportunity to celebrate successes and achievements in the Program in 2010, and the finale for the year was the ever-popular ‘Window to Fame’ session where 35 students mingled with high profile guests including: Luke Carroll (Aboriginal Actor), Steve Crombie (Professional Adventurer), Theresa Anderson (Former Australian’s Women’s Touch player), Jharal Yow Yeh and Josh Hoffman (Brisbane Broncos), ‘Big Mike’ Salbro (Rapper and Juvenile Justice Worker).

AIME Brisbane City – Queensland University of Technology AIME Learning Centres Loganlea ALC was held on Wednesday afternoons at Knowledge House (Indigenous Support Unit) at Loganlea SHS. A total of 14 ALCs were held at the school in Terms 3 and 4 in 2010. Kelvin Grove ALC was held on Thursday afternoons at the Kelvin Grove SC Library. A total of 9 ALCs were held at the school in Terms 3 and 4 in 2010.

Year 9 and Year 10 Indigenous Year 9 and 10 students from our two partner schools made their way to the RMIT Bundoora West Campus every week, where they worked in pairs with their Mentors – RMIT students. During the course of the Program, AIME Mentees and Mentors worked together through challenging sessions, including: Respect, Aboriginality, Hip Hop, Drama, Art, and Poetry. Mentees in the Program learned there is no such thing as shame, and to be Indigenous means to be successful, while RMIT Mentors benefited from the unique two-way flow of education AIME offers with Indigenous kids working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Mentors.

AIME Learning Centres AIME utilised the RMIT students as Mentors at the AIME Learning Centre (ALC), based at Bundoora Secondary College. Each week at the ALC, kids give up 1.5 hours of their afternoon to engage in a fun activity and then break into homework time with a Mentor.

Mentors made their own way to the ALC to act as volunteer tutors for the Indigenous high school students, in Years 7-12 who come along. Due to AIME attracting RMIT students from every discipline, the Mentees received high quality assistance in the subjects they found most challenging.

The second ALC was based at Reservoir District Secondary College. Teachers at the school were repeatedly incredulous at how socalled disengaged kids were willingly to attend the ALC until 4.45pm every Wednesday. The accessibility of their young Mentors was key, as well as the highly competitive basketball matches which saw Mentors vs. Mentees that kicked off the ALC sessions!

AIME received informal support from Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc (VAEAI) to deliver the pilot program in 2010.

Held successful Principals’ Roundtable Conference in the Northern Metro Region, attended by numerous partner/ potential principals, and journalist and AIME Board Director Jeff McMullen as keynote speaker.

Year 9 and Year 10 Indigenous Year 9 and 10 Mentees from our six partner schools travelled to the Monash Clayton Campus every week, to work with their Mentors through 17 challenging sessions in the Interactive Program and the Leadership Program.

Fuelled by “Indigenous means Success” Mentees and Mentors took to the Program with enthusiasm. Each group gaining great benefit from their mentoring partnerships, through the sharing of knowledge – educational and cultural.

AIME Learning Centres Monash student Mentors attended the AIME Learning Centre (ALC) based at Scotch College. Each week they provided tutoring support to the kids who came along in the evenings to not just participate in the fun activities, but to spend time with their Mentors going over homework and other projects. Students from Year 7 through to Year12 came along. With Monash students from every discipline of the University, the Mentees were able to tap into the skills and knowledge of the various Mentors for a broad range of subjects – even the most challenging.

Later in the year Dandenong High hosted a strongly attended AIME Learning Centre launch involving people from the school and wider community. Indigenous and non-Indigenous students participated in a workshop run by Melbourne Heart Football Club, alongside a number of keynote presentations. Parents, Principals, Teachers, Monash University staff, Melbourne Heart Football Club, AIME Staff, Indigenous and non-Indigenous high school students and AIME Mentors attended the launch. The afternoon showcased AIME’s ability to form a meeting point for the community around the Program.

Year 9 and Year 10 Macquarie University saw the Year 9 and Year 10 Indigenous students from eight partner schools make their way to the campus each week to meet with their Mentors and participate in the AIME Program.

Over 17 weeks this unique partnership witnessed growth and change in both Mentees and Mentors as they shared their experiences and their knowledge.

AIME North West Sydney – Macquarie University AIME Learning Centres Seven Hills High School has a high number of Indigenous students and a very active school community. The beginning of the year was very successful, with new students coming along to the ALC who had not previously been attending AIME. This allowed AIME to form good relationships with these students, which will lead to participation in the Year 9 and 10 Programs in the future.

This was the first year that Blacktown Girls High had been involved in the North West Sydney Program. The school did an excellent job of supporting the Program and also hosted the ALC. There was a very good turn out each week. Teacher feedback indicated that students made big improvements in their school assignments and exams. Teachers also volunteered their time to help students with their work and supervise the ALC. This was also the first year that Northmead hosted an ALC. The students were receptive and worked very hard throughout the year.

While the numbers were not as strong as Blacktown and Seven Hills, the foundation is in place for future years.

Community and University Engagement Role Models/ Community People, Groups and Organisations Involved or Presentations to these groups In 2010 good relationships were developed with the faculties of Behavioural Science and the Faculty of Arts at the University. This was a big step forward giving AIME a higher profile within the University community, raising recruitment numbers for Mentors.

The relationship between AIME and Warawara – Department of Indigenous Studies continued to grow stronger in 2010, building on the groundwork done by the Program Manager, Nathan Lovett, in 2009. Nathan participated in a number of functions, was Faculty guest speaker on a number of occasions and also assisted Indigenous students on campus and those visiting while on block studies.

U@MQ was again a huge supporter of AIME, particularly with the session room bookings and other key AIME events including the organisation of the ‘Courtyard Challenge’.

Year 9 and Year 10 The Year 9 and 10 Programs at UOW went from strength to strength this year and saw an increase in numbers across the board in both Mentees and Mentors. AIME continued its strong relationships with the schools that have participated in the Program for the last 2 years as well as adding 2 new schools to the Program for 2010 - Corrimal High School and Fig Tree High School. This strengthened numbers across the Year 9 and Year 10 Programs and will help to ensure the long-term sustainability of AIME in the region.

“This is my second year of AIME at UOW and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Watching the Mentees come out of their shells and embracing new challenges is inspiring and uplifting.”

4 AIME Learning Centres This was AIME’s second year supporting the AIME Learning Centre at Dapto High School starting in Term 2. The Centre serviced as many as 30 students from all backgrounds on Monday afternoons with as many as 8 Indigenous students attending. It has always been difficult to increase the number of Indigenous students attending as access for other schools is limited due to transport options.

This was also AIME’s second year of supporting an ALC at IACCC (Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation Cultural Centre) on Tuesday evenings from Term 2. This Centre has seen tremendous benefits through AIME’s participation over the past 2 years and is looking to expand in 2011 to running a second Centre on Thursdays.

The Centre frequently services over 30 Indigenous students from the local area with AIME providing Mentoring/tutoring support. The Centre was an exciting and energetic space that enjoyed visits from members of the St George Illawarra Dragons Rugby League side as well as several games of Mod-Tag as a reward for the students commitment and hard work.

Warilla High School once again provided an ALC on Wednesday afternoons from Term 2. The ALC serviced between 15 and 20 Indigenous students throughout the year on a consistent basis. Warilla High and AIME continued to have an extremely strong relationship, which was evidenced by the success of the ALC held there.

Year 9 and Year 10 Ben Bowen (Sydney City Program Manager) and Adam Hansen (Sydney City Program Manager – Cadet) joined the AIME family in January 2010 and immediately set upon imbedding themselves as leaders in the Sydney community by delivering the highest quality sessions at The University of Sydney.

With tremendous support from all of the Faculties, high schools and the wider Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, AIME Sydney City grew exponentially to remain one of the most successful AIME Programs to date.

AIME Sydney City Mentors are of the highest calibre and set a benchmark for Mentees to step up to and then hurdle over! Mentees and Mentors participated in 16 sessions this year.

In the Year 10 Leadership stream Mentees completed sessions which included: Drugs and Alcohol, electing themselves as the first Indigenous Prime Ministers, and Toolkit for Life - a series of sessions based around giving students knowledge of basic life skills such as: opening a bank account and building a resume.

The End of Year Graduation lunch was hosted by Wesley College with the largest group of Sydney City Mentees and Mentors that AIME has ever seen in attendance.

This session was a great opportunity to celebrate our successes and achievements along the way, with some Mentees speaking to a room of 220 people on the obstacles they over came in 2010, their aspirations for finishing Year 12 and going to The University of Sydney.

AIME Learning Centres AIME Learning Centres were hosted by Alexandria Park Community School, St Scholastica’s College in Glebe and Tempe High School. The ALCs grew throughout the year in terms of Mentee attendance, the events and the level of success. Executive teams from Google and Lend Lease attended the ALC events pitting themselves against the kids in the ultimate AIME Marshmallow Challenge.

They also suggested exciting new pathways for both Mentees and Mentors to explore for their future careers. In 2011 Sydney City will be following on from the successes of 2010 to make the ALCs even better.

Finance and Partnering Report Before AIME incorporated as an Indigenous Corporation in 2008 we were simply a group of university students with an idea that we thought could help to make our local community stronger.

As a former Mentor, I have seen first hand the difference AIME makes to individuals and communities. I am one of those individuals for whom the opportunity to participate in AIME, to be surrounded by talented and successful young Indigenous Australians, has enriched my own identity as an Australian.

It was also through my experience as a Mentor that I came to learn that many young Indigenous kids are sceptical of ‘programs’. Many have seen numerous initiatives promise much and deliver little, and some that haven’t even shown up at all. Such experiences naturally leave young minds cautious. It is with this cautiousness in mind that we seek to deliver a program and a financial model that delivers on the commitments we make to local communities. It is the partners of AIME that give us the ability to meet these commitments.

AIME 2010 Annual Accounts The expansion of AIME with two new Programs in Victoria and one in Queensland saw both revenue and expenditure reach record levels.

Revenue increased by 83.7% over 2009 to $2,581,593. Expenditure grew by 76.8% to $1,904,939. This resulted in a surplus of $676,652.

It is the policy of AIME to maintain modest annual cash surpluses, particularly during our growth phase. This allows us to build a cash balance that can ensure our operations continue should there be any unforeseen timing issues with cash receipts.

AIME’s operations were facilitated by the support of universities as well as corporate and philanthropic foundations and fundraising that allowed the Program to be delivered and grow through 2010.

Our largest source of funding is through our university partners ($1,002,727), followed by corporate and philanthropic support ($658,127) and Social Ventures Australia ($538,000), which have directed funding from several company and family foundations.

A big shout out must go to the AIME Mentees! It is the results of our Indigenous high school kids who are smashing school completion rates that drive the support of AIME.

Information about the directors and senior management Geoff Lovell (Chair) Geoff is a Division Director of Macquarie Group Limited (Macquarie), based in Sydney, where he has worked for over nine years. Geoff currently works in Macquarie's central Risk Management Group and has previously held key roles in Macquarie Capital, including as CEO of Macquarie ProLogis Trust. Bronwyn Bancroft (Director) Bronwyn is a descendant of the Djanbun clan of the Bundjalung nation. She works as an artist across many mediums. Over her 30year career, Bronwyn has participated in more than 200 exhibitions, comprising of solo and group shows within Australia and overseas.

Bronwyn has a Diploma of Visual Arts, two Masters degrees from the University of Sydney and is currently a Doctoral candidate at the University of Western Sydney.

Paul Chandler (Director) Paul started his education career in 1987 teaching science and mathematics in his local community at Matraville High School. He pursued a Master of Science in Psychology and PhD in Education at the University of New South Wales and in 1992 he became the first academic (Aboriginal or Non-Aboriginal) from education to ever receive an Australian Research Council post- doctoral research fellowship. Today, Paul is regarded as an international expert in cognition and learning and currently is the most cited educational researcher appointed at any Australian University.

Directors Report Jeff McMullen (Director) Throughout his professional life as a journalist Jeff McMullen has worked on a great many humanitarian projects. Jeff is also the CEO of Ian Thorpe's Fountain for Youth. Jeff has a Bachelor of Arts (Macquarie University), Hon Doctorate Journalism (Central Queensland University), Hon Doctorate Letters (University of Newcastle, Australia) and Hon Doctorate Letters (Macquarie University) and is active on a number of Boards and Councils across Australia.

Paul Sinclair (Director) Paul Sinclair is an Anaiwan man from the Armidale region in North-West NSW. Paul completed a Bachelor of Teaching at the University of Sydney. In his role as Aboriginal Education Officer at Sydney's Taronga Zoo, Paul was responsible for the development and implementation of Indigenous programs. Paul started his journey with AIME in 2007 as its Education Director, resigning in 2010 to focus on his production company, Mirri Mirri Productions.

Tanya Hosch (Director) Tanya works primarily in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs and other areas of social policy. Tanya is actively involved on a number of Boards and Councils and holds a position as a Visiting Research Fellow with the University of Technology, Sydney. Tanya is also employed as Executive Director of a Governance project aiming to establish the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute.

Deborah Kirby-Parsons (Secretary) Deborah has been working with AIME since 2008 and is currently the Systems Manager. Prior to this Deborah provided administrative support to the Executive at the Koori Centre at the University of Sydney and was Secretary to the Board of Studies (Indigenous Studies) and the Policy Advisory Group, both at the University. Deborah has a BVA and Grad Dip (Vis Art) from the University of Sydney.

Principal Activities AIME is an Indigenous Corporation, and a not-for-profit organisation with the objective of providing a six-year Mentoring Program for Indigenous Australian students to access while undertaking their high school studies from Year 7 through to Year 12. AIME partners University student volunteers in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with high school Indigenous students, for an hour a week over the course of a 17-week Program. AIME's goals are to improve Year 10 completion rates, Year 12 completion rates and University admission rates for all participating students.

Apart from the impact AIME is having on Indigenous high school students, it offers a significant opportunity for Indigenous and nonIndigenous University students to gain invaluable experience working with Indigenous high school students, and offers a great base for University marketing and recruitment with AIME facilitating the development of long-term partnerships between local high schools and the University.

Operating Results The operating surplus of the Corporation for the financial year amounted to $676,652 (2009: surplus of $327,497). No income tax is payable as the Corporation is exempt from income tax.

Review of Operations Since the end of the previous financial year, the Corporation has engaged in its principal activity, the results of which are disclosed in the attached financial statements.

Subsequent Events No matter has arisen since the end of the year that will or may significantly affect the operations of the Corporation, the results of those operations, or the state of affairs of the Corporation in future financial years.

Changes in State of Affairs There was no significant change in the state of affairs of the Corporation during the financial year.

Future Developments The Corporation expects to maintain the present status and level of operations. The Corporation expects to achieve profitable operations in the current financial year.

The Corporation expects its results and expansion to be further underpinned by partnerships with other universities.

Environmental Regulations The Corporation’s operations are not regulated by any significant environmental regulation under a law of the Commonwealth or of a State or Territory.

Distributions Paid or Recommended No distributions were paid or declared since the start of the financial year as the Corporation’s constitution does not permit payment of distributions.

Notes to the Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31 December 2010 NOTE 1: Reporting Entity This general purpose financial report covers Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience Indigenous Corporation (AIME or the Corporation) as an individual entity. AIME is a Corporation incorporated and domiciled in Australia under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006.

The Corporation’s registered office and their principal place of business is as follows: Gadigal House, NCIE 166 George Street Redfern NSW The Corporation’s principal activities are as follows: AIME is an Indigenous Corporation, and a not-for-profit organisation with the objective of providing a six-year Mentoring Program for Indigenous Australian students to access while undertaking their high school studies from Year 7 through to Year 12. NOTE 2: Statement of Significant Accounting Policies (a) Basis of preparation The financial report is a general purpose financial report that has been prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards (AASBs) (including Australian Interpretations) and the requirements of the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006.

The financial statements were authorised for issue by the Board of Directors on 16 March 2011.

The following is a summary of the material accounting policies adopted by the Corporation in the preparation of the financial report and have been applied consistently to all periods presented in the financial report. The financial report does not comply with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Basis of measurement The financial report has been prepared on the accruals basis and is based on historical cost basis.

(b) Use of estimates and judgement The preparation of financial statements in conformity with AASBs requires management to make judgements, estimates and assumptions that affect the application of accounting policies and the reported amounts of assets, liabilities, income and expenses. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

Estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimates are revised and in any future periods affected.

There are no judgements made by management in the application of Australian Accounting Standards that have significant effect on the financial report or estimates with a significant risk of material adjustment in the next year.

(d) Financial instruments (i) Non-derivative financial assets Financial assets are recognised initially on the trade date at which the Corporation becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

The Corporation derecognises a financial asset when the contractual rights to the cash flows from the asset expire, or it transfers the rights to receive the contractual cash flows on the financial asset in a transaction in which substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership of the financial asset are transferred. Any interest in transferred financial assets that is created or retained by the Corporation is recognised as a separate asset or liability.

The Corporation has the following non-derivative financial assets: loans and receivables.

Loans and receivables Loans and receivables are financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market. Such assets are recognised initially at fair value plus any directly attributable transaction costs. Subsequent to initial recognition loans and receivables are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less any impairment losses Loans and receivables comprise cash and cash equivalents and trade and other receivables Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash balances and call deposits with original maturities of three months or less. (ii) Non-derivative financial liabilities Financial liabilities are recognised initially on the trade date at which the Corporation becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument. The Corporation derecognises a financial liability when its contractual obligations are discharged or cancelled or expire. Financial assets and liabilities are offset and the net amount presented in the statement of financial position when, and only when, the Corporation has a legal right to offset the amounts and intends either to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.

The Corporation classified non-derivative financial liabilities into the other financial liabilities category. Such financial liabilities are recognised initially at fair value plus any directly attributable transaction costs. Subsequent to initial recognition, these financial liabilities are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method.

Other financial liabilities comprise trade and other payables.

(e) Employee benefits (i) Defined contribution plans A defined contribution plan is a post-employment benefit plan under which an entity pays fixed contributions into a separate entity and will have no legal or constructive obligation to pay further amounts. Obligations for contributions to defined contribution plans are recognised as an employee benefit expense in profit or loss in the periods during which services are rendered by employees. Prepaid contributions are recognised as an asset to the extent that a cash refund or a reduction in future payments is available. Contributions to a defined contribution plan that are due more than 12 months after the end of the period in which the employees render the service are discounted to their present value. (ii) Short-term benefits Short-term employee benefit obligations are measured on an undiscounted basis and are expensed as the related service is provided.

A liability is recognised for the amount expected to be paid under short-term if the Corporation has a present legal or constructive obligation to pay this amount as a result of past service provided by the employee and the obligation can be estimated reliably.

Notes to the Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31 December 2010 (f) Revenue Recognition Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable. The main revenue stream is obtained from the rendering of mentoring Program services through partnerships with universities. Revenue is recorded in the year in which the services are performed.

AIME receive revenue by way of cash and online donations from businesses, individuals and foundations, bequests and other not-forprofit organisations.

Interest revenue is recognised on a time proportional basis using the effective rate of interest method.

Other revenue is recognised when the right to receive the revenue has been established.

(g) Goods and Services Tax Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of the acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of expense. Receivables and payables in the balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included as a current asset or liability in the statement of financial position.

Cash flows are included in the statement of cash flows on a gross basis. The GST components of cash flows arising from investing and financing activities which are recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO are classified as operating cash flows.

(h) Functional and Presentation Currency This financial report is presented in Australian dollars which is also the Corporation’s functional currency.

(i) Australian Accounting Standards not yet adopted A number of new standards, amendments to standards and interpretations are effective for annual periods beginning after 1 January 2010, and have not been applied in preparing these financial statements. None of these is expected to have a significant effect on the financial statements of the Corporation, except for AASB 1053 Application of Tiers of Australian Accounting Standards and AASB 2010-02 Amendments to Australian Standards arising from Reduced Disclosure Requirements, which become mandatory for the Corporation's 2013 financial statements, the amendments only affect presentation aspects of the financial statements. The Company does not plan to adopt this standard early and the extent of the impact has not been determined.

Risk management policies are established to identify and analyse the risks faced by the Corporation, to set appropriate risk limits and controls, and to monitor risks and adherence to limits. Risk management policies and systems are reviewed regularly to reflect changes in market conditions and the Corporation. The Corporation, through their training and management standards and procedures, aim to develop a disciplined and constructive control environment in which all employees understand their roles and obligations.

(i) Credit risk Credit risk is the risk of financial loss to the Corporation if a customer or counterparty to a financial instrument fails to meet its contractual obligations, and arises principally from the Corporation’s cash and cash equivalents.

(j) Financial risk management (continued) (ii) Liquidity risk Liquidity risk is the risk that the Corporation will encounter difficulty in meeting the obligations associated with its financial liabilities that are settled by delivering cash or another financial asset. The Corporation’s approach to managing liquidity is to ensure, as far as possible, that it will always have sufficient liquidity to meet its liabilities when due, under both normal and stressed conditions, without incurring unacceptable losses or risking damage to the Corporation’s reputation.

Typically the Corporation ensures that it has sufficient cash on demand to meet expected operational expenses for a period, including the servicing of financial obligations; this excludes the potential impact of extreme circumstances that cannot reasonably be predicted, such as natural disasters. (iii) Market risk Market risk is the risk that changes in market prices, such as interest rates will affect the Corporation’s income or the value of its holdings of financial instruments. The objective of market risk management is to manage and control market risk exposures within acceptable parameters.

Financial risk management policies and objectives

The Corporation holds cash and cash equivalents; the main purpose of this financial instrument is to provide funding to the various Programs run by the Corporation. Other financial instruments include receivables and trade and other payables.

The Corporation is exposed to credit and interest rate risks from its cash and cash equivalents and is exposed to liquidity risk from its trade and other payables.

The Corporation does not have significant credit risk from its receivable as at 31 December 2010 or 31 December 2009.

Risk exposures and responses

Interest rate risk The Corporation’s risk exposure to changes in market interest rates relates entirely to its cash and cash equivalents, which are deposited at floating rates. The Corporation has not entered into any contracts to mitigate this risk. Due to the low effective interest rate received on at call deposits and interest income forming less than 1.5% of the Corporation’s revenue for the year (2009: 0.5%), any changes in interest rates will have little impact on the Corporation’s financial position or performance.

Director’s Declaration

The Board of Directors have determined that Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience Indigenous Corporation is a reporting entity and that this general purpose financial report should be prepared in accordance with the accounting policies outlined in Note 2 to the financial statements.

In the opinion of the Board of Directors, the Financial Report:

(a) that in their opinion, there is reasonable ground to believe that the Corporation will be able to pay its debts when they become due and payable; (b) that in their opinion, the financial statements and notes are in accordance with the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Regulations 2007 (CATSI Regulations), including; i.

compliance with Australian Accounting Standards

ii.

providing a true and fair view of the financial position of Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience Indigenous Corporation as at 31 December 2010 and its performance for the year ended on that date.
