DID YOU KNOW? Painted Horses of Aiken
Painted horses are all over Aiken, but did you know they were part of an organized fundraiser almost two decades ago?
Horseplay was a collaborative effort between many Aiken artists, the City of Aiken, the United Way of Aiken County, and Aiken Center for the Arts. 31 total horse statues were unvielled during a Horseplay Gala on Oct. 2, 2003, at the Aiken Center for the Arts.

Afterwards, the statues were moved to various locations around the city, mostly in downtown Aiken. Then in March 2004, the Horseplay Gala Auction and Ball was held the night before the Spring Steeplechase and many of the statues were sold.
Several are still seen around Aiken today, including “Hav Sum Fun” and “Stonerside” at the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum in Hopelands Gardens. “Magnolia Mare” is also located in Hopelands and can be seen from Whiskey Road.
‘“Patriotism” stands at the intersection of Laurens Street and Park Avenue, near the Morgan Circle Fountain. “His Spirit” watches over the front of Aiken Properties.
