Design Review Message: Spring has definitely “sprung” in Arrowhead. The trees are blooming and the snow is almost gone. Improvement projects in Arrowhead are running at full speed! By May of 2021, we have received more applications for permits than we did all last year. That is exciting, but also a little overwhelming. I hope the construction in the canyon causes as little delay as possible. Please continue to follow the requirements set forth for improvements in the 2020 AIA Regulations. This helps the committee move forward for you more quickly. We have been meeting in person and approving plans via email. Please continue to contact me with questions and we can work to get your permit approved in a timely manner. Please see these links, Construction Agreements, Plot Plans, these are the documents that need to be completed and sent to me to begin the permit process. All $100 permit fees need to be sent to: AIA Office PO Box 83, Gunnison, CO 81230. Please include, Name, Project, Filing, Block, Lot on check so it can be recorded DRC Meeting Schedule: properly. Smoke Signals June/July 2021

Forestry Message: The western US, including Arrowhead, is in a drought and another bad fire season is expected. At Arrowhead the norm is to have two wildland fire seasons. The first fire season, “Before Greenup” is after snow melt and before the green grass dominants. In a “normal” year Green Up is sustained through the middle of the summer by monsoon rains. The monsoons were very weak last year so Arrowhead was already dry before the usual second fire season arrived in September. Of course, we don’t know what this summer will bring but there are many things that can be done at Arrowhead to reduce the risk of wildland fire. We have a fire department that is prepared to take quick action on any fires within the community and they are backed up by mutual aid agreements with other departments. To prevent fires, owners need to follow the rules for having campfires. Vehicles should never be parked in dry grass. To reduce the risk of large fires, owners should annually remove the forest debris that has been accumulated over the winter. In addition, owners should make progress on mitigation and defensible space on their property. Getting the work all done in one year is not feasible for everyone, but making some progress every year is feasible. As your Forest Manager, my responsibility is to continue to make progress on fire mitigation on the community property. One of the tools to accomplish that is the community clean up days that are held the 4th Saturday of each month, May to August and 2nd Saturday in September. Clean up of down material is done along roads and fire mitigation is also done on pieces of community property away from the road. The Forest Refuse Site is open and ready for your forest debris. Remember no construction debris, garbage, or metal objects. MCH packs should be put up by the middle of June. If you did not order some extras are available by calling, texting or emailing Bill. Distribution will be at the end of the maintenance building by the garbage compactor on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:00 to 2:00 PM until June 19. If you cannot make those times contact Bill to make other arrangements. ACE Caps should be put in before buds open on conifers, which means NOW. Pickup on the same schedule as above. Supply on hand is very limited so contact Bill immediately if you want ACE Caps and have not ordered. Free Tree Reviews are available to owners to identify problems with insect or disease, trees that are a hazard to parking areas and structures, and fire mitigation and defensible space needs. Contact Bill to make an appointment. Contact Bill if you are interested in assisting with forestry work. Another great way to volunteer at Arrowhead is with the Fire Department where you can meet a great group of people, make a contribution to the community, and learn some new skills. There is a place and need for everyone. Bill Conway Arrowhead Forest Manager 541-729-6259 arrowheadforestmanager@gmail.com For more information, click here to visit the Forest Management webpage.

Maintenance & Improvements Now that winter is over ( I think ), we are going into the dusty season. Please slow down and be considerate of your neighbors and don't dust them out. The speed limit is 20 mph in the filings, but sometimes that is too fast for the conditions. When you are on the mountain, slow down and enjoy the animals and the surroundings. We are still having people put building materials, cardboard and other items that can jam up our Trash Compactor. The other day someone put wood flooring in it. We are looking at the camera as I write this report. If we identify you , you will be fined.

The Winter Parking Lot expansion will begin sometime at the end of June or first part of July. After we take trees down and pull them into the NW corner of the parking lot, there will be wood available for owners. For safety reasons, PLEASE DO NOT HANG AROUND WHERE THE TREES ARE BEING CUT!! It is advisable when cutting trees into firewood length to wear protective gear and be safe. On behalf of the AIA Maintenance Team and members within our Arrowhead community, we want to say THANK YOU, Ron Corder; for providing many years of service in helping Will to clear the parking lot and busting open our filing roads. Ron is retiring from the Maintenance crew so he can dedicate more time to his woodworking business. When you see Ron, please give him a big THANK YOU!!!

Message from Patrol... Welcome to all the new and returning owners! It’s that time of year when folks are heading to the mountains and the first thing (or maybe the second) that all want to do is build a nice cozy campfire. So, it behooves me to remind all that before a campfire is built on Arrowhead property, it must be in a Patrol approved fire-pit and said pit must be approved each year. Considering that last summer saw the 3 largest wildfires in Colorado’s recorded history and this year looks to be drier than last, we need to be extra diligent. Building a fire in an unapproved pit is asking for a hefty fine ($500) as well as endangering the property and well-being of all in Arrowhead. Specific instructions, regarding approved fire-pits can be found in the FORMS section on the Arrowhead website. Since Arrowhead is in Gunnison County, we are subject to their restrictions as well as the State’s. Notifications of restrictions will be posted on our Arrowhead1.org website, as well as the Message Kiosks at Lake & Alpine and Ute & Alpine. Be sure to check the weather reports to be aware of Red Flag warnings which occur with windy/dry conditions. Speaking of wind, our Fire Chief measured how far a campfire spark can travel in a mild breeze and decided that firewood should be kept at least 15 feet away from a burning fire. Leaving a fire unattended is asking for a visit from AVFD. Reminder: The property owner is responsible for any damage caused to Arrowhead even if it’s done by friends, relatives, or renters. For more information, contact Patrol or check the website. May we all have a safe and enjoyable summer. After last year, we’ve earned it. Fishing at Arrowhead! Our first stocking is being scheduled for the 1st week of June and will be in the lower Flint Lake only. The Second stocking is tentatively scheduled for the week after the 4th of July, and depending on the lake level of the Upper Flint Lake, will be split between the upper and lower lakes. Remember, we close the Lakes to all fishing for three days after stocking to give the fish time to acclimate. The unwanted suckers have been drastically reduced in number, thanks to the efforts of PJ and his Gunnison Masterbaiter's removal and re-purposing of those unwanted fish as frozen bait! Please leave those traps alone if you see them. Here’s a few important reminders when fishing at Flint Lakes... 1. Only dogs of Owners will be allowed to be brought down to the Lakes and they must remain on leash at ALL TIMES! No longer will the dogs of guests or friends be allowed to be brought down to the Flint Lakes! 2. Also, Folks using Flint Lakes need a fishing pass from Patrol. Please remember to remove any trash you find near or around the lake and park only in the designated parking area, with no motor vehicles allowed past that point. We have provided a disposal canister for any used fishing lines or hooks you might find or collect, so please let's keep the area clear of all such debris! Also, please do not return any sucker fish you might catch to the Lake and take them with you when you leave and properly dispose of them! Once again fishing is permitted on Evergreen Lake, but please remember that all pets must be on leash at all times, and no fishing or hiking is permitted on the stream above the lake and since this is private property, please respect that and confine your walking or hiking to just the area within 20 feet around the Lake. Thank you very much! If you have any question, please contact Jeri Rau by emailing her at: jeri.rauaia@gmail.com

The Obnoxious....

Arrowhead has been a leader in Gunnison County for its program for noxious weed eradication. Again, this year we all need to continue to preserve the grasses and wildlife in our community. Please remember that it is each property owner’s responsibility to control noxious weeds on their own lot…it is Colorado law. To learn about identifying noxious weeds on your property, CLICK HERE. Herbicide can be purchased at Home Depot or the Coop. We do have a sprayer we can loan out if requested. Depending on the weather, we will begin spraying towards the end of July. We may also need to do a second spraying in September. The AIA hires a commercial licensed company to spray the large areas of common ground. If you have questions, just email me and I will get in touch with you. Thanks in advance for volunteering for your community.
