Tuesday, November 29, 2022: All entry submission materials are due by 11:59pm PST. Tuesday, December 6, 2022: Jury reviews conclude.

Wednesday, December 7, 2022: All entrants will be notified if their project has been awarded.

Thursday, January 19, 2023: Awards Gala!

Fees The registration fee will not be refunded for submissions that are disqualified, late or incomplete.

All submissions will be included in our People's Choice Awards.

Eligibility Participation is open to built and unbuilt projects completed after January 1, 2017 and not having been previously awarded by AIA San Fernando Valley, except that projects that were previously awarded in an unbuilt category may be resubmitted in a built category. Entries must be submitted by the Firm of Record or the Architect of Record. The submitting architect should credit all other participants who substantially contributed to the design of the project. There is no limit to the number of projects that may be entered by a firm. All materials submitted must be cleared for public reproduction. All entrants must be AIA members in good standing as of October 1, 2022. 

All licensed AIA San Fernando Valley members may submit built and unbuilt projects located anywhere in the world.



Architect members of other AIA chapters may only submit built and unbuilt projects located within the AIA San Fernando Valley chapter boundaries including the City and County of Los Angeles north of Mulholland Drive as well as the cities of Calabasas, San Fernando, Burbank, and Glendale. your local chapter dues. AIASFV Allied membership allows you to submit built and unbuilt projects located anywhere in the world.

REGISTRATION & BUILDING YOUR SUBMISSION Complete the online registration process. You may open your project file(s) anytime but will need to make full payment of your non-refundable entry fee(s) by Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 11:59 PM. Please see our website (www.aiasfv.org/resources) for a PowerPoint submission template or email info@aiasfv.org and we’ll send it to you. Detailed layout guidelines are included in the template. Upload all PDF submission materials to your Submittable project file(s) by Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 11:59 PM: 

Design Award entry (single PDF file of up to 12 pages in landscape layout, 12 inches wide by 8.5 inches high - see PowerPoint template, and

Sample award certificate (single PDF file of up to 12 pages) – see PowerPoint template; include a certificate draft copy for each certificate you would like to order within the PDF. The first certificate is free; additional certificates are $50 each – you will be charged separately for these after the awards results have been announced.

By submitting a project, the submitting architect asserts that he or she has provided a complete list of participants who contributed substantially to the design of the project, regardless of discipline, and absolves AIASFV of any responsibility for omissions.

JUDGING Decisions by the jury are final. Winning entries are confidential until announced publicly at the AIASFV Design Awards event (either in-person or virtual.) Judging criteria include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Design Resolution: Does the project demonstrate skill and sensitivity to formal, functional and technical requirements?



AIA Framework for Design Excellence: Does the project embody one or more of the Framework’s design principles?



Overall Design Excellence: quality of the built form relative to its program, needs, challenges, and setting. Clarity of the parti. Does it further our understanding of design via new approaches?

ENTRY CATEGORIES Institutional/Civic Commercial/Mixed Use/Multifamily Residential Educational Adaptive Re-Use/Renovation/Historic Preservation Interior Architecture Urban Design & Master Planning Unbuilt Architecture Single-Family Residential: - New Construction - Renovation and/or Addition 20-Year Award (see details following) Firm Award (see details following) Best Client Award (see details following) Building Team of the Year Award (see details following) Great Details (see details following) 20-Year Award: Recognizes projects of enduring design quality completed prior to the end of the 2001 calendar year; must submit photographs from the time of original project completion as well as current condition views.

Firm Award: Recognizes a body of work by a single firm (or its successors), including at least five projects executed over a period of at least 10 years. Firms may nominate themselves.

Best Client Award: Recognizes a client who has supported the architect in the execution of an exceptional project design or body of work built in the past five years; client to have actively participated with the architect in the design process to expand new ideas for the betterment of the community.

Building Team of the Year Award: Recognizes a project team that has made a strong collaborative effort to achieve excellence in design. The team may include but is not limited to: Client, Architect, Contractor, Consultants, Developer, and/or Public Agencies.

Great Details Award: Recognizes interior and exterior details in any built category that are beautiful and/or unique in their own right in terms of aesthetics, function, or application. Another significant aspect of this award is the demonstration of leadership by the architect in working with their design team, suppliers, and craftsmen, to create unique solutions that inspire and elevate the profession. The project as a whole need not be an award winning project.

Recognition will focus only on the detail submitted. The project to which the detail is associated may be referenced, but only to establish context and significance. (Referenced projects(s) may be submitted simultaneously in other categories with separate entry.)

Your Great Details submission should include drawings, photos, and renderings of the detail element. If physical models or prototypes are available, please photograph them and include them in your entry; they may also be displayed at our awards event.
