Editor’s Message Welcome
to the 56th Annual Archi to promote the excellent designs produced by their Awards for the AIA Long Island Chapter. members beyond their chapter boundaries. This has been an unprecedented year in many ways. COVID-19 and the economic downturn that followed in the spring has resulted in many architecture firms finding themselves in a struggle to survive. Despite these difficult times, AIA Long Island Chapter members have shown themselves to be resilient and committed to delivering quality designs to their clients and their communities. The outstanding projects submitted to the award program this year are the best evidence of their efforts. Kudos to all the firms who have participated.
I have worked on various publications for other organizations; however, this is my first time collaborating with AIA Long Island. Having the opportunity to review the projects firsthand has been an eye-opening experience. The winning achievements exhibit a deep level of site, cultural, social, economic, and environmental considerations, often exceeding the expectations of clients. They are also stunningly beautiful.
I am honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with Graciela Carrillo, AIA (2020-2021 President) on the first ever online magazine showcasing the Archi Award program this year. Our goal is to create a publication that will broaden the magazine’s audience and reach architects and clients regionally as well as nationally. The hope is that this publication will inspire other AIA chapters

Yu-Ngok Lo, FAIA Yu-Ngok is the founding Principal of YNL Architects in Culver City, California. He was the Editor-In-Chief of the AIA YAF CONNECTION, NOMA magazine, and the AIA Strategic Council Yearbook. Yu-Ngok is currently the Editor-InChief of the AIA College of Fellows Newsletter and the American Institute of Building Design magazine .

President’s Message
One year ago, when we were celebrating the
2019 Archi Awards, who would have thought that our lives would be so dramatically disrupted and changed. One year later we have changed and adjusted to the current circumstances; our celebration of design excellence is hosted in a virtual format and we also have a newly Archi Journal. We are embracing the change and the challenge to adapt to a new situation.
One example of this forward thinking is the series of lectures that the chapter has been hosting. These series of lectures highlighted the importance of design for schools and senior living facilities during COVID19. During these sessions different strategies were discussed to help prevent the spread of the virus. These lectures provided an opportunity to explore emerging trends in school resilient design. Also, these sessions examined potential short and long term strategies to enhance school safety and future trends in education.

The AIA LI Archi Awards program will evolve along with the new trends in architecture to meet the future. I’m confident that next year we will award the best in excellence to designs that addressed the health, welfare and safety of our community from a pandemic and sustainable perspective. Graciela Carrillo, AIA, LEED AP B+C Graciela works as a NYS registered Architect for Cashin Associates, P.C. She has been involved with the AIA at the local, state and national level, currently serving as the President 2020-2021 as well as the WIA Founder and Co-Chair of the AIA Long Island Chapter. On a National and State level Graciela was the past 2017-2018 NY Regional Director (YARD) for the Young Architects Forum (YAF). Graciela is also the Co-Founder of the Immigrant Architects Coalition, a group committed to helping and providing resources for immigrant architects to achieve a prosperous career in the U.S. In 2019, Graciela was the recipient of the AIA NYS Young Architect Award.

Despite the obstacles placed on our profession there were 88 submissions for this year’s awards which speaks of the fortitude of the architectural profession who found a way to overcome adversity and continue to achieve excellence, proving the adage that we will always face difficult situations and find a way to solve the problem.

Anthony S. DiProperzio, AIA received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from New York Institute of Technology in 1973. He is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and obtained his license in the State of New York and began his practice in 1976. He is also licensed in New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and California. Mr. DiProperzio also served as an Adjunct Professor at N.Y.I.T. from 1976 to 1986, Chairman of the N.Y.I.T. Council of Overseers for Architecture 1997 to 2000 and President of the Architecture Alumni from 1997 to 2000. His service in the AIA includes President of both the Queens Chapter from 1993 - 1994 and President of the Long Island Chapter 2014. He also served at the New York State AIA level as Secretary/Treasurer 1996, VP Communications/Public Relations 1997, VP Government Affairs 1998 and Board of Directors in 2008 - 2009. Mr. DiProperzio also serves as a Neutral for the American Arbitration Association. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 and received a Letter of Commodation for his service at the Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland and was honorably discharged.

The Archi Statuette
The
Archi” was designed specifically for the 1970 Annual Long Island Association Architectural Awards Program. The name was taken from the Greek word Architekton, which means “Chief or Master Builder”. The award is 13” tall, and incorporates a T-square, an arch and a three-sided face representing the past, present, and future. HISTORY AND PURPOSE OF THE ARCHI AWARDS Every year since 1964, the Long Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has celebrated outstanding architectural achievement through the annual Archi Awards Program. The purpose of the Archi Awards Program is to provide professional and public recognition of architectural projects of design excellence. The awards recognize projects conceived and built on Long Island as well as projects designed by Long Island architects, built or planned to be built elsewhere. Since its creation by the Long Island Association of Commerce and Industry, followed by the involvement of the AIA Long Island Chapter, the Archi Awards Program has gained prominence as the Long Island community has begun to recognize and understand the impact of quality architecture on the built environment. To date, over 800 projects have received awards and recognition for design excellence. Each entry is judged on the success of the design solution presented and not in competition with other entries. Today, the Archi Awards Program is a major event in the Long Island design community which raises awareness of the importance of quality architectural design to Long Island as a whole.

2020 AIA Long Island Archi Awards Jury
Jessica O’Donnell, AIA, NCARB (Jury Chair) Jessica O’Donnell, AIA, is a Project Architect at Kitchen and Associates, in Collingswood, New Jersey. She has over nine years of experience in residential and mixed-use building design, holds an NCARB certificate, and is licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Jessica is a graduate of Oklahoma State University where she earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree with a minor in Environmental Studies in 2011. During her five years at OSU she was a Division I Equestrian Team member, a member of the American Institute of Architecture Students, and a volunteer with the Architecture Students Teaching Elementary Kids (ASTEK) program. As a young professional she is committed to developing a community within New Jersey that promotes the professional growth of emerging professionals while fostering camaraderie among the younger generations within the architecture profession through inclusive events that encompass the different design disciplines. Jessica is a mentor for the ACE Camden program as well as NJSBA-US Army Steam Tank competitions. In addition to her role as AIA West Jersey’s Immediate Past President, Jessica currently serves as the Knowledge Director for AIA National’s Young Architect Architect’s Forum and is also an Advisor to AIA New Jersey’s Emerging Professionals Community (EPiC). As a founding member of EPiC, she has helped shape the community and its efforts to promote the professional growth of emerging architects and provide service to local communities through advocacy, education, and public outreach events. In recognition of her contributions to the community and profession, Jessica was awarded the 2019 AIA New Jersey Young Architect of the Year award.

Kirby Wu, AIA, LEED AP A licensed architect in numerous states with over 25 years of building industry experience, Kirby Wu brings a unique blend of design and construction knowledge to the Wu & Associates design-build practice. After graduating with honors from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture with a double major in Industrial Management, Kirby worked as a Project Architect for a prominent design firm prior to joining Wu & Associates in 1996. He advanced to Vice President after obtaining a Master of Business Administration degree from Cornell University, and became President in 2010. Through Kirby’s leadership, Wu & Associates has grown its design and construction portfolio to provide services throughout the continental United States with a specialization in the areas of LEED sustainability and historic preservation. Servicing both Federal government agencies and Fortune 500 customers, the company’s success is reflected in the national recognition it continually receives for demonstrating excellence in construction, sustainability, safety, and diversity. Another hallmark of leadership is the company’s achievement of the first LEED Platinum Certification for Existing Buildings in the entire State of New Jersey. Outside of Wu & Associates, Kirby serves and volunteers on several leadership platforms. • Northeast Region Vice Chair for the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) from 20132015, a national organization of 69 chapters and 22,000 members. • Regional President of the United States Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce, for the Northeast Region between 2016-2019. • ABC New Jersey Chairman 2011-2013. Kirby currently still serves on the Board of Directors for ABC New Jersey Chapter. He is also a soughtafter lecturer on business and architecture for professional audiences, and an avid mentor for small and diverse businesses.

LoriAnne Jones AIA, LEED AP BD+C LoriAnne Jones is the current president of AIA Central NJ. She has a passion for mentoring and currently serves as a board member for the ACE Mentor Program of New Jersey. As a mentor and team leader for over 10 years, she has been fortunate to see many of her ACE students enter college and successfully join the profession. LoriAnne is a Project Manager at DIGroupArchitecture, an MBE firm focused on “Architecture for Change�. Through her career she has worked on a range of project types including K-12, Higher Education, and Healthcare, with a special focus on Community Health Centers. Merging her interest in education and career development with her affinity for design technology, LoriAnne has also taught Computer Aided Design at the middle school and high school level.

William J. Martin, R.A., AIA, P.P., LEED AP-H William J. Martin (Bill) is an architect and community planner focused on high performance resilient and energy efficient design configurations using cultural vernacular expression. He designed the First Certified LEED Platinum home in suburban NJ and received an AIA NJ COTE Top Ten Merit Award for the project entitled “Knight on a Chessboard”. Bill was educated at Carnegie-Mellon University (‘81-’84) in Pittsburgh, PA and Pratt Institute, School of Architecture (‘84-’88) in New York City. While at Carnegie-Mellon, he studied Architecture and Managerial Economics. At Pratt Institute, he studied architecture and its relationship to the economics of real estate development and received his Architecture Degree with Honors (B Arch 1988). Bill started the WJM Architect firm over 30 years ago and has designed and consulted on a wide variety of building types. In 2020, Bill was the recipient of a new prestigious award—the inaugural AIA Architects League Community Service Award presented for distinguished service to the community for leading the Westwood Zoning board as it’s chairperson for over 25 years. His service contributed to the NJ Chapter of the American Planning Association’s designation of Westwood NJ as a “Great Place in NJ 2019” for a great downtown. Bill is a tireless advocate for architects on social media and leads the AIA NJ Public Awareness Committee as Co-chairperson. He is considered a social media influencer by AIA National and is regularly consulted by local media outlets. He has been interviewed by CNBC, Fox News, MSNBC, NPR, and the Today Show regarding historical design trends.

Verity L. Frizzell, FAIA, LEED AP, CPHD Verity Frizzell currently holds the title of Principal Architect with Feltz & Frizzell Architects, LLC. Ms. Frizzell is responsible for all aspects of the practice, including managing the office, architectural design, document production, maintaining the computer network and staffing. Ms. Frizzell’s experience ranges from commercial to residential with an emphasis on small scale projects. Her focus is on sustainability and resilient design, and she strives to incorporate materials and methods which are sensitive to the environment without compromising the needs of the client. She is a LEED Accredited Professional and has been a registered architect in the states of New Jersey and Texas since 1995. She became a Certified Passive House Designer earlier this year. Throughout her extensive career, Ms. Frizzell has held affiliations with various professional organizations. She was President of both the Jersey Shore Section and the New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Vice President of Bay Head School Foundation, and she served as Vice-Chairman of the Bay Head Planning and Zoning Board. She has been a member of AIA since 2000, and has served on five National committees or task forces, including the Culture Collective, Equity in Architecture Commission, and Public Outreach Committee. In addition, Ms. Frizzell has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards. In 2003, she was the recipient of the AIA Jersey Shore Young Architect of the Year Service Award, as well as an Award of Excellence from the Morris Habitat for Humanity Design Competition. In 2011, she was the AIA-NJ Distinguished Service Award recipient, and Feltz & Frizzell Architects was the AIA Jersey Shore Firm of the Year. She received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from AIA Jersey Shore and AIA-NJ. She was also a recipient of an Award for Distinguished Performance in the Area of Technology from the University of Virginia. Most recently, she was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows.

HONOR AWARDS These awards, selected by the Board of Directors of the Long Island Chapter AIA, recognize individuals and firms for outstanding service to the Long Island architectural community: • The AIA Architectural Achievement Award: Presented to an architectural firm or individual architect that has produced distinguished architecture consistently for a period of at least 10 years. • The AIA Benefactor’s Award: Presented to a public group, private individual or group of individuals or corporation who has sponsored and supported distinguished works of architecture on Long Island. • The AIA Membership Award: Presented to an AIA member who has provided outstanding service to the Chapter for over 10 years. • The Lifetime Achievement Award: Presented to an architectural firm or individual architect for outstanding achievement for over 20 years. • The Community Service Award: Presented to an architectural firm or individual architect who through their actions have increased the quality of life within the community. • The Legislator Award: Presented to a Legislator who has assisted in sponsoring bills that benefit the health, safety and welfare of the community. • The Educator Award: Presented to an educator who has consistently endeavored to advance the profession through promoting the importance of quality architecture and its positive influence on society.

HONOR AWARDS Special Recognition Award Anthony DiProperzio, AIA Anthony
DiProperzio was an active member of the American Institute of Architects, Queens Chapter, holding office as Vice-President in 1991 and 1992 and President in 1993 and 1994. Mr. DiProperzio also served as Secretary/Treasurer of the New York State AIA in 1995 and 1996, Vice President for Communications/Public Relations of the New York State AIA in 1997, and Vice President for Government Affairs of the New York State A.I.A. in 1998. After moving his office from Queens to Long Island, Mr. DiPoperzio joined the AIA Long Island Chapter. He is an active member of the AIA Long Island Chapter Board of Directors and in 2014 became President of the chapter. He serves as Committee Chair of our Annual Golf Outing, Committee Co-chair and host of our Annual Archi Awards Program and a member of our finance. It is with great honor that we bestow this special award to a most deserving recipient.
Membership Award James A. Prisco, AIA Graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor of Architecture from New York Institute of Technology, Jim worked for Norman Jaffe and Peter Keller as an apprentice draftsman. After working for various developers in the early 80’s as an in-house architect supervising large construction projects Jim went on to established his own practice in 1985. Devoting time to the betterment of the practice, Jim has served on the board of the American Institute of Architects Long Island Chapter for 8 years. Jim advanced through the chairs as a Director, Treasurer, Vice President and President of the chapter. He has also given back to the community through his charitable work with the television series George to the Rescue where those in need of architectural work without the resources are helped. Recently Jim has worked as an architectural on-set consultant to the production staff of a major motion picture “Demolition” with Jake Gyllenhaal directed by Jean-Marc Vallee.

He is a member in good standing with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and is registered in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. As a firm principal and respected design leader in the field, he has been asked to lecture at many design and institutional functions. He has donated his time to educate elementary school students to the wonder of architecture.
Mark D. Stumer is one of the founding principals at Mojo
Stumer Associates Architects. He has practiced architecture as a principal for over 30 years. Before the formation of Mojo Stumer Associates Architects, he worked for a New York City architectural firm where he was lead designer on many award-winning projects. His expertise in architectural design, interiors and project management has enabled Mojo Stumer Associates Architects to develop into the organization it is today. Mr. Stumer sees architecture as an entire design process where the architectural design does not end with a building form, but must include the function and aesthetics of the interiors for the project to be complete. His responsibility at Mojo Stumer Associates Architects, besides his architectural projects, leans towards design development and interior design, along with the responsibilities of marketing, social networking, public relations and firm management. He was instrumental in starting the Interiors Department at Mojo Stumer Associates Architects 22 years ago, takes pride in its present status, and has an active role in its design direction and daily management.
Mr. Stumer presently sits on the board of the Architectural Landmarks Commission for Kings Point, New York, and in 2013 he was appointed to the Planning Commission. He serves as a board member of the Great Neck Arts Center and was a Trustee for nine years and head of the Building Committee at Temple Beth El of Great Neck, one of the largest Reform Congregations in the country. He was a board member of Engineers Country Club for over six years and led their construction campaign as trustee and architect. In 2005, Mr. Stumer was very proud to be appointed to the Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute, one of the nation’s leading architectural schools and his alma mater. In 2010, he was appointed chair of the Building & Grounds Committee. He has been recognized for his charitable work by being the honoree of the Tilles Center “Swing for Kids” Golf Outing, the Great Neck Arts Center Gala, and the Temple Beth El Golf Outing. In recent years, Mr. Stumer has revitalized his passion for photography and has become an accomplished photographer, photographing many Mojo Stumer projects. His architectural photographs have recently been widely published.

HONOR AWARDS Architectural Achievement Award Beatty Harvey Coco Architects Established
in 1880 Beatty Harvey Coco Architects is Long Island’s (and one of the nations) oldest architectural firm’s. BHC is led by partners Todd Harvey and Salvatore Coco with headquarters is in Melville, NY. With a 140 year old portfolio BHC’s designs cover every building type including schools, offices, churches, prisons, hospitals, restaurants, retail and residential; but over the past twenty years there have been three distinct areas of their practice that have had significant impacts on the built environment, local communities and in one example an entire City. PUBLIC LIBRARIES: Since 1997 when BHC designed their first library project, the Shoreham Wading River Pubic Library, they have became known as one of the nation’s leading architectural firms in library design and have been involved in the planning and design of over 230 libraries. On Long Island alone BHC has worked on over 120 libraries stretching from 52 branch libraries for the Brooklyn Public Library in the west to the Southampton Rogers Memorial Library and the Mattituck Library in the east. There is a BHC library represented on every exit of the Long Island Expressway and their designs have impacted dozens of communities. BHC’s library designs have won multiple Archi awards and have been featured in “Library Journal” and “American Libraries” magazines. BALTIMORE’S INNER HARBOR: From 1995 up until today BHC s been the architects for a new urban community on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor called Harbor East. What was once an industrial wasteland consisting of factories and parking lots Harbor East is now Baltimore’s premier neighborhood and has transformed and extended the Inner Harbor’s promenade connecting downtown to historic Fells Point. Covering 12 acres and totaling over 5.8 million SF Harbor East is a true mixed-use development that includes five hotels, six residential buildings, four commercial office buildings, theaters, restaurants and retail at street level. BHC not only served as architects for all of the buildings but also assisted in developing the master plan and building design standards. The last building in the community, the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences, is completing construction this month. In 2008 BHC began work on Harbor Point, just to the east of Harbor East. Harbor Point is one of the nations largest brownfields developments and was originally an Allied Signal Chromium plant. In 2005 the site was capped and is in the middle of being transformed into a 16 acre / 9 million SF mixed-use development similar to HE but with a focus on public park space (3 acres worth). BHC has

been responsible for evolving the master plan as well as serving as lead architects on all of the buildings, which to date include the new 500,000 sf headquarters for Exelon, a 256 unit apartment building called Point Street and a new 156 key Hilton Canopy Hotel. BHC just design a temporary beer garden (The Sandlot) and is beginning design on a new 1 million SF mixed use development called Parcel 4. MULTI-FAMILY: Over the past 10 years BHC has expanded their experience in mixeduse development to include the master planning and design of a number of significant TOD and residential developments that are changing the landscape on Long Island. Facing the new challenges of this century (climate change, population growth, economic pressures) creating developments and neighborhoods where residents can live near transportation, shopping, dining has been a rewarding challenge. RECENT NOTEWORTHY PROJECTS: Some of the recent noteworthy projects include the new Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore, MD. A new Hotel at James Madison University, the North Hills Country Club Main Clubhouse and the Suffolk County Ball Park.
Educator Award Maria Di Natale, AIA Maria Di Natale
attended NYIT School of Architecture and Design in Old Westbury, where she received her Bachelor of Architecture Degree. She attended the 5-year program on scholarship and graduated magna cum laude, receiving the Gold Medal for Architectural Design, as well as the AIA Long Island Chapter Commendation. Maria attended the Ecoles des Beaux Arts in the summer of her 4th year and studied the work of Le Corbusier with many of his compatriots and toured France. She won the Prix Le Corbusier in recognition of her excellent design work in all disciplines, sculpture, graphic design, mosaic, landscape, and architectural design. Upon graduation from NYIT, she began her teaching career at the Institute of Design and Construction in Brooklyn as Instructor of Design in the Associate Architecture Degree Division while working for Roe Eliseo in Midtown, Manhattan. Maria also was working with Professor Jonathan Friedman on his Creation in Space 1 and 2 as Assistant Book Designer and procurer of student work and images. She began her teaching career at The Institute of Design and Construction, creating the design curriculum for their 2-year associate degree, while also teaching ARE Review Classes at the NYU School of Continuing Education. Maria began teaching first year design studios at the NYIT School of Architecture and Design in the Manhattan campus, while working for SLCE Architects on such projects as the Lincoln Square IMAX Theatre and Millennium Tower and most notably, as associate architects to Caesar Pelli and Fox and Fowle. Her next position, after obtaining her licensure in NY State, was for NYC Department of General Services as Project Architect for many public buildings, working with such firms as SOM, Polshek and Partners and Richard Dattner Associates. She worked on the E911 Call Center, Flushing Library, and Louis Armstrong Rehabilitation Center. After establishing her own firm as an expansion of as a small side practice, Maria Di Natale, AIA – Architecture, Planning and Design was born. She concentrated on primarily residential new construction and additions. In 2006, she won 2 awards for projects in Queens, while continuing her teaching at the NYIT Old Westbury Campus. She then became an Associate Partner at LPA Architects where she continued to work on residential and small commercial property designs. Maria is currently a Senior Architect at H2M architects + engineers, where she works on a wide range of projects. Her first responsibility was working with Locust Valley Central School District, where projects for 6 district buildings ranged from $35,000 to $2.2M.
Currently she is dealing with diverse types of projects within the real estate market sector of H2M. She organizes in-house design competitions for the architecture discipline that in turn are submitted to local and international juries. As part of the Women’s Initiative Steering Committee, Maria is the Advocate for the Corporate Office in Melville. The corporate initiative mission, vision and values will not only represent women in the workplace, but also endeavor to create a more diverse and collaborative space for all employees as well as those who are underrepresented in the company. The combined experiences of working independently, with firms, as a manager and teaching students to explore their own individual means of expression through the media of 3 dimensional modeling and drawing, has made Maria capable of entering any situation with an open mind, clear objectives and strategies for success. Her ability to encourage and empower others is among her strongest personal attributes. She is a collegiate architect, meaning that she gathers others successfully towards a common goal. Her philosophy regarding architecture revolves around the conveyance of three principles that she tries to impart on her own projects and to her students: process, passion, and persistence. The vast experience with public and private projects that make up Maria’s experience, others an expansive view of the profession emanating from the educational to the professional and beyond. Maria has been a member of the American Institute of Architects for the past 28 years since obtaining her license in 1992. She continues to be an Associate Adjunct Professor at NYIT School of Architecture and Design (NYIT SoAD) where since 1991, she has taught all levels of design studio from first to fifth year. Maria’s greatest pleasure is to encounter former students out in the workplace exerting their passion and skills in the design and construction industry.

Principal of Edward Paul Butt Architect, Edward is in charge of the design, coordination and management of multiple projects. He has been responsible for the complete design process of a variety of projects including renovation and building investigations. His career has encompassed planning and architectural design for health care, research, commercial and industrial projects, such as office buildings, libraries, warehouses and laboratories, as well as residential alterations and new home construction. Community Service Award Joseph Mottola, AIA Joseph
Mottola, AIA, is the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at H2M architects + engineers, a company that truly prides itself on their philanthropic efforts. Joe has over 35 years of experience in the field of architecture, design, and construction in the New York metropolitan area. Being an active member of the volunteer fire service for more than 35 years, Joe has demonstrated a long commitment and passion to serving and protecting the public. Joe has been an integral part of the inception of the Architecture division at H2M. After studying architecture at the New York Institute of Technology, he was the second architect hired at the firm in 1987. As the group grew, Joe took on a leadership role in running the architectural operations. In the early 1990s, Joe, a longtime volunteer firefighter, approached H2M with the idea of branching out into firematic design market. To date H2M has designed and assessed over 350 fire stations. In 2007, Joe became the Division Director of Architecture where he navigated the group through some of the best and worst business climates. From the great recession in 2009 to the great growth period in 2013, Joe led the division in continuous growth, increasing the employee head count by over 160%. Now as COO, Joe is strengthening the business core values for the entire firm and helping to maintain our presence in the community. Joe is a valued and dedicated H2M employee and represents so many of the core values that H2M embodies — from community and respect to teamwork and integrity. Being a volunteer Firefighter for Massapequa Fire Department, he is actively involved in the Firefighters Charitable Foundation, where he received the 2018 Humanitarian Award; and is a member on the Board of Nassau County Firefighters Association. Both organizations raise public awareness in fire safety and raise money for different charities and scholarship funds. Furthermore, he is active with the National Fire Protection Association, the NYIT Alumni Foundation, the American Institute of Architects, and the Construction Specifications Institute. In addition, Joe is heavily involved with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). AFSP’s goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide and mental illness. The group is dedicated to funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies in mental health, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected. Joe’s passion for AFSP is contagious and has inspired the firm to be a part of this notable cause as well.
Cares, Inc., and the Special Olympics of New York, just to name a few and Joe is always very involved in volunteering his time. Joe is also the driving force for H2M’s Annual Turkey Drive benefiting Island Harvest with its Thanksgiving Food Drive. In 2019, over 250 turkeys were collected by H2M employees for Long Island families in need. Among the things that Joe wants to be remembered for, both at H2M and in life, is making a difference. Whether that is on a professional or personal level, Joe wants to know he made life a little easier for someone in some way. While that might seem like a big feat, upon being in the company of Joe Mottola, it is evident that he is far closer to that goal than he thinks. His genuine commitment to the firm, the wellbeing of the employees, and the community exemplify all the things a company could only hope for in an employee and leader. A community-oriented individual, Joe enjoys the unique focus of H2M’s work: “Everything we do is for the betterment of the community,” he says. “We design firehouses, post offices, schools, even the fields our kids play on.” A lifelong Long Islander, Joe lives in Massapequa with his wife, Susan, and is the proud father of four children: Jessica, Michael, Kerri, and Joseph.

The
project is a redesign and revitalization of an existing 1970’s era house designed by local Architect Myron Shulman in East Hampton, New York. Crisp lines, minimalist details, and a purposefully restrained palette of materials, breathe new life into the existing house, while building on the idiosyncratic character of the original design and further accentuating access to daylight and views prevalent in all of Shulman’s houses. Modifications to the exterior include the expansion and reshaping of the main living room double-height window wall and master bedroom window to compliment the sloping roof line as well as extending the dining room glazing to encompass the corner condition. The existing tan-colored, vertically oriented plywood siding was removed and replaced with deep charcoal grey fiber cement panels with similar dimensions. The darker tone further compliments the natural landscape surrounding the house while providing contrast to the exterior wood decking and bright interior spaces.

The interior is a study in openness and clean lines, with a number of details and highlights that impart a unique character and personality to the space without detracting from the main experience created by the high sloping ceiling and dramatically framed views out to the landscape. By opening up and re-framing the north living room aperture, the line separating interior and exterior becomes increasingly insubstantial both visually and materially and during the day and evening. The theme of simplicity and lightness compliments the clients’ personal aesthetic and their intimate connection to art by providing the perfect canvas for the seamless integration of two site specific pieces. The artwork by Mary Temple and Naomi Kawanishi Reis, inspired by visits to the house, enrich the interior by capturing the celebrated relationship between the house and its surroundings.

Within
a glacial kettle hole in Montauk hills is a site with distant ocean views within a mature oak forest. Targeted to design within the cliff, a value minded modern structure that sat in harmony in nature with a net zero impact.
Dynamic sun angles allow for natural light to grace space and permeate the house with its passive solar design. The upper level was creatively designed for an open family minded floor plan with exposed structure and large skylights punctuating the space.
Built embedded into the cliff with concrete and natural boulders to create plateau’s allowing for indoor and outdoor spaces to embrace each other in a natural rhythm of both public and private living. Long deeply set arcing concrete walls with glacial erratic boulders allow for retainage, scraping their forms in the earth in lines across the site. The bermed earth shelter concepts, SIPS wall panels, active and passive solar design achieve a zero-carbon footprint. With the lower structure largely underground, the masterplan allows for another floor from which to achieve Ocean views as the family grows. The exterior palate includes burned and stained siding, dark metal, glass, exposed concrete and fine stucco that layer the house composition and form.
Exiting the private lower level, one views the fern forest and above a raised beam sculptural pool that carves its exposed line literally out of the earth as it holds the embankment above. The created plateau is for outdoor life with a kitchen, covered patio, pool house and pool all held by other concrete and boulder walls allowing the driveway to be hidden beyond. The design resulted in a value minded, net zero house embedded gracefully into the earth that created an unconventional layout for a dynamic earth centered structure fit in scale and palate with its environment.

On
a dramatic bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, an 8,000 square foot modern residence welcomes family and friends to enjoy good views, good food, and good company. Conceived as a family “resort� for every day and all-season living, the design mixes an open flow of flexible gathering spaces with private retreats. The social spaces are grand and the private spaces are intimate, all contained within a large yet cozy structure that spills to the outdoors. The house is like an open shell nestled on a carved hill. A wrapping metal roof and wall surrounds and protects a permeable glass and wood skin that invites arrival and frames the open landscape and water views. The house energetically reaches beyond its shell to connect indoor and outdoor experiences. For example, brick, stone and cedar wall surfaces run freely between inside and outside. A cantilevered upper balcony from the master bedroom thrusts through the shell towards the water. The sculpted lower

landscape connects to a poolside grotto. An outdoor kitchen has a skylight porch roof. The site is comfortably breezy on warm days, but during harsh seasonal storms is buffered by a protective skin enclosure and landscape selections. The generously open and flexible spaces are densely composed to promote a feeling of welcoming comfort and energy. A center hall steel frame stair is a walkable viewing platform by day and chandelier at night. A house becomes a home when it contains and connects, delineating boundaries through a play of scale while connecting flowing interior spaces with open-ended corners. Indoor and outdoor areas feel contained and cozy, connected and expansive. Weaving geometric ribbons of humble materials and a central hearth actively stitch family and friends to the natural setting and to each other, activating spaces for entertaining and respite, community and privacy.

The site for this waterfront residence is located on the Great
Neck Peninsula, facing west to views of NYC and the borough bridges. When purchased, there existed a 50-year-old house and pool structurally condemned which required immediate removal. Once the site was cleared, a year was devoted to stabilizing the seawall and hill to accommodate the newly proposed home. The lot size, shape and relationship to an easement access road, overlaid with strict zoning regulations was a key factor in the organization of the client’s program elements. The arc contour of the easement road and required setback informed the front facade shape, which was designed as a privacy screen, as adjacent homes are in close proximity. Due to strict height requirements the house from the street appears to be one story and then steps down the hill allowing for three fully occupiable floors. The local jurisdiction also granted special approval accepting the design of the garage, within the front set back, as its roof is level with the roadbed and
fully landscaped. A path accesses a hidden door to the bedroom level of the house. The garage is accessed through a semicircular driveway that leads to a depressed entry courtyard, offering privacy to the main entrance. The configuration of the home is a U-shape surrounding a rear courtyard. This shape, along with suspended pods assures water views to all occupants while not compromising privacy from the adjacent homes. The house is constructed on a steel frame, clad with fiber cement, resin panels and an aluminum curtain wall system. All roofs are accessible as either decks or landscaped garden areas. The lower level accesses decks, an outdoor kitchen, and pool area which are perched on the edge of the upper retaining wall.

13 Astor Place is a Romanesque Revival building built in 1859
on the site of the Astor Opera House. The building previously housed the New York Mercantile Library until 1932, the Alexander Hamilton Institute, and the Astor Place Hotel and was finally converted to condominiums in 2003. The building is an 11-story building with 50 condos on the upper floors with retail on the ground floor and is listed as a NYC Landmark. The building is situated on the outside corner of Astor and Lafayette and houses a glazed sidewalk cafe that was fully renovated and restored to become an exceptional location for NYC people watching. The unique design of this store blends well with the history and culture of the area. There was fine attention to detail to bring out the character of the structure and was revived to expose the original brick, terracotta, stone and plaster finishes. The high ceilings were exposed and the existing plaster moldings

were uncovered and repaired. The existing exterior brick walls were revealed, repaired and then painted by local artists. The 3 cast iron square columns within the center of the space were stripped down of their previous gyp bd finishes and clad in plaster over fireproof paint and the existing concrete floors were polished and inlayed with mosaic tile. Many of the more modern elements incorporated into this store were inspired by the historic nature of the building including custom metal and bubbled glass partitions sitting atop partial height walls clad in Carrera marble. Our team along with Starbucks top designers created this historic store with the newest lighting technology to create a comfortable atmosphere with precision targeted spotlighting on each table and seating area. Most of the light sources are creatively hidden to create a comfortable glow throughout the store.

The North Bellmore Public Library Board of Trustees was aware
that work on their 13,000 square foot Library structure was badly needed when they embarked on a modest interior renovation project. As their Architect, we suggested that in addition to commencing preliminary design work on the alterations, we be allowed to undertake a needs assessment and master plan study related to possible future work. After a thorough study of the existing conditions and 2 days of staff interviews, it became quite clear that a project limited to just renovating the existing spaces would not solve any of their functional problems let alone provide for badly needed expansion of departments such as the Children’s Library and New Media / Periodicals. The Board resolved that we should develop plans for the expansion of their Library and go to the public for a school district referendum vote in order to fund the larger project. Over a period of 5 months, we ran numerous pubic input meetings that both increased the design’s responsiveness to the end user’s needs, and also built considerable community support for the project. The referendum passed by a 2/3 yes vote in May 2015.
In addition to the many functional improvements that the project’s design achieves, we also have addressed two major problems with the existing building - the first being lack of a coherent main entry. With parking in a school lot to the side of the building, the main entry was currently not visible upon arrival and was only reached via an awkward and circuitous route from the parking lot. Our design reorganizes the parking lot to allow a vehicular drop-off and direct entry into the side of the library. A curved plaza leads to the main library entry overlooking the front lawn shared with the adjacent school. The second problem we addressed is the disjointed existing architecture. The original 1961 structure and its 1986 addition have little in common and present a jumbled appearance. We have added an elegant glass wrapper around 3 sides of the building giving it a new and unified face. The glass opens up the “closed in” original architecture making the interior more connected to the surrounding community it serves. Sustainable features include sunscreens at the high performance glazing, photovoltaic roof panels, building materials with recycled content and low emitting interior materials.

The retail area in the front, open to the public, is complete with Insta-worthy shelves filled with crystals, home goods, and beauty products—all made with sustainably-sourced ingredients.On the other side of the shelves, fresh fruit and vegetables that belong to the club’s full-service restaurant, The Well Kitchen + Table, are on display near the white tables that double as a workspace and eating area. The Well houses a meditation dome, a full-fledged spa equipped with a gorgeous locker room and two steam and sauna rooms, a library that holds events, lectures, workshops, and weekly emotional support circles, a mindful movement studio that hosts up to 10

The upstairs space is very open and social, but as you go downstairs it’s mostly area where you want to be inward-looking and private. The serene splendor of the lower level attests to the power of this inspiration. Walls are white and curved, lined with parcels of lavender and studded with glittering pyrite stones; in the relaxation room, drawn from the idea of Superman’s crystal cave, light glows ethereally from selenite sconces.

Small Projects Any Category (Under $300,000) Addition to Historically Significant East Hampton Estate, East Hampton, NY SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership
Built as a theater in 1917 and subsequently turned into
a weekend home, the current Owners have continued this grand building’s artistic heritage by hosting cultural events and performances. To meet its extensive preservation challenges, they toggle its use between performance space, weekend home, and summer rentals. The original theater-volume remains unheated, so the challenge was to extend year-round use by creating a new dining room/sitting area with modern HVAC to provide all-season comfort. Our design strategy centered on creating a contrasting addition that would complement the original Elizabethan-style structure. To counterbalance the high-pitched, slate-roofed mass, we nestled a modern flat-roof, glass-box into the rear corner. Inspired by the leaded-glass bay and exposed timber ceiling of the original theater, we set up a rhythm of posts and panels to anchor what would mostly be windows and clad the exterior in copper. Since copper
had been used as gutters and accents on the original building’s exterior, this material link further imbued the addition with a sense of being “of-the-house”, yet simultaneously distinct. When at the start, a large Elm tree on site required removal, we had it milled into paneling, columns, and beams for the interior. We also reused the site’s original bluestone pavers to create a new open-air terrace, consciously selecting stones with a smooth finish for the interior’s radiant heated floor. The ceiling has a long central skylight framed by an Elm wood beam-grid and the interior detailing is tightly coordinated with the exterior copper-clad post and panel geometry. The experience of being inside or outside this addition is uplifting and celebratory with a lightfilled interior sheathed in natural wood, and an exterior that sparks an inventive dialogue between old and new.

Above site Above the spray of the Atlantic is a restrictive
corner site in Montauk that has latent but underutilized expansive views. The challenge was to create a bold but thoughtfully place structure that would nod to the surrounding forms in both scale and finish, would have built-in value with a net zero footprint, and would stand timeless in its form and materiality.

Bermed earth design, structural insulated panels, active and passive solar design and geothermal energy systems ensure an off-grid zero carbon footprint existence created within budget through factory minded production methods.
One-third of the house sits embedded within the grade shielded from the elements naturally by the earth itself. The exposed structure is built with modular steel and clad with burnt and stained weathered wood and stucco to withstand harsh weather conditions and emulate the tones of the neighborhood. Each cantilevered stacked rectangle provides shelter for the space below. The site’s restrictive setbacks are in every direction, leaving the concept of digging down below as the best way to create additional square
The geometry is a simple small-scale series of stacked boxes that form a dynamic double cantilever facing the ocean in a timeless form with sand-dusted monochromatic materials that keeps the structure unobtrusively juxtaposed with its neighbors. Modest in its scale, materiality and composition, nestled into its earth withholding its size, Surfside is able to blend a strong, modern impact within the fabric of the vernacular in its neighborhood in an environmentally sound way.

The architectural character of Manhattan is a palimpsest.
As buildings are renovated and added to over centuries traces of each iteration remain, expressing themselves as an oddly placed column or a texture that bleeds through successive layers of paint. In the renovation of 329 Columbus Avenue to create Asset restaurant, we sought to excavate the existing space in search of unique textures and hints of the past that would enrich the guest experience. In the process of 3D scanning the building, vaults of expanded metal lath were discovered above the fire rated ceiling. The vaults were reintroduced as an exposed element serving multiple functions. Formally, their rhythm breaks down the expansive space to a more intimate scale. Structurally, they conceal steel girders, below which are hung the stair, bar shelves, and light fixtures, allowing those elements to be much more delicate than if they were self-supporting. Depending on the size of the openings in the expanded metal and how it is lit, the material can be manipulated to adjust its transparency. Thus it can be used as a delicate stair guardrail; or expanded to serve as a ventilation grille; or paired with insulation to become an acoustic absorber; or layered to conceal mechanical equipment; or stretched to hold wine bottles. The diamond pattern of the expanded metal becomes a motif unifying the details, from the pattern of the stone floor to the bathroom mirrors and umbrella stand.
The process of excavation was also applied to the oak panelling on the walls. The boards were sandblasted to erode the soft earlywood that lies between the harder latewood grain, thereby enhancing its character and increasing its sound absorption. Areas of the panelling were masked off from the sandblasting, creating a sharp line of contrast between the eroded portions and smooth portions. The mezzanine, itself a remnant from a past iteration of the space, provides a unique dining experience overlooking the bar below and the street beyond through the 2 story glass curtain wall facade. A grand stair connecting the levels is divided in 2 parts, 1 side for service and the other for guests. The 2 sides merge in a gentle curve reminiscent of the ceiling vaults. Under the mezzanine the more intimate space can be divided into private dining rooms by expanded metal screens. Light grazes across the screens in this application to reduce their transparency. With the thoughtful manipulation of a limited palette of materials, each of which reflecting a bit of the history of the space, the former retail store is transformed to create a variety of dining experiences: lively parties at the bar, special family occasions in a private dining room, and intimate banquette seating. Each space is tailored for a special experience but is cohesive in its material and details.
