I hope this message finds you well as we enter the summer months Last month I had the honor of representing AIA Las Vegas at the annual business meeting taking place at A’23 in San Francisco There were 4 bylaw amendments which all passed and you can view them here Most notably the amendment to provide International Associate members with the same privileges as AIA and Associate AIA members by allowing them to apply for Emeritus membership This amendment passed with 100% votes in favor
The business meeting was also where the 2024 candidates for open officer positions gave their speeches with the elections the following day Below are the elected candidates and their positions for the upcoming terms
2024 First VP/2025 President
Evelyn M Lee, FAIA (AIA San Francisco/AIA California)
2024-2025 Treasurer
Heather Philip-O'Neal, AIA (AIA New York Chapter/AIA New York)
2024-2026 At-large Director
Latoya N. Kamdang, AIA (AIA New York Chapter/AIA New York)
The remaining days of the convention were filled with the product show, which included a puppy play area to take a break, and educational seminars with fellow attendees. Being away from Las Vegas during the NHL playoffs, it was nice to get together with fellow AIA Las Vegas members to cheer on our Golden Knights though they did not win that evening Next year’s A’24 convention will be in Washington DC on June 5-8, 2024 You can sign up here for updates
I also wanted to take this opportunity to invite you to the upcoming AIA Las Vegas ARC Product Show 2023, which will be held at the INDUSTRIAL event space on September 13, 2023 This is a great opportunity to network with other architects, learn about the latest trends from our Allied partners, and attend some educational sessions I encourage both exhibiters and attendees to register early Registration is open now, just check out our website for further details
Thank you for your continued support of AIA Las Vegas I look forward to seeing you at the ARC product show in September!
Sincerely,
James Horvath, AIA

I am
This is an organization that is a representation of our profession AIA co to like minded individuals who share our same passions to help b profession of design through innovation, knowledge, service and sharing that experience with the next generation of architects and professionals like myself. This organization and its members help stronger industry and connection to our community
Please introduce yourself to the AIA community
I was born in the central valley of California, the agriculture center of the state and am a first generation college attendee and graduate, receiving my bachelors of science in Architecture in Spring of 2022 I am an emerging professional with a passion to create more equitable and just design, while supporting the next generations of aspiring architects/architecture students I spent the majority of my time at UNLV as an advocate for students in the profession and academia through AIAS, holding positions both locally and nationally as UNLV Freedom by Design director, FBD National Advisory Committee chair, AIAS UNLV President and am a part of the AIA LV Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, AIA LV Women in Architecture committee, and the NV Fellows committee I have been honored to speak on panels regarding justice, equity and diversity in academia, women in architecture academia, and transitioning from school to the profession at the women in architecture symposium in NV I am currently working in the profession at GRN Vision, where we focus on sustainable building consulting, affordable housing and homeless housing I am also exploring universities to study and obtain my Masters degree in Architecture, with the aspiration of becoming a licensed Architect My vision is to create a career that will inspire minority girls, women and students to reach higher and further than you can think you can and to believe that you can achieve whatever you put your mind and effort to.
Describe a pivotal moment or influence that ignited your passion for architecture
A pivotal moment that ignited my passion for architecture was one of the first conferences I ever intended as a student. I attended AIAS grassroots in Washington D.C. where all the attendees were architecture students, prominent student leaders in their chapters and communities, and aspiring leaders like myself. There was so much discussion, inspiration and goals, I came back to Las Vegas buzzing with this new found knowledge and passion. I started to become more ambitious and curious about every facet of architecture and that moment and feeling became the driving force in my passion and career thus far
Can you elaborate on your experience collaborating with other architects and industry professionals?
Collaborating with architects and industry professionals has been incredible since I have been involved in AIA Professionals have always been happy to share their knowledge and experiences with me, and answer questions that I may have I have also been able to help provide some student perspective to help answer any questions they may have, as well as help strengthen the bridge between the UNLV School of Architecture and the profession
What advice would you offer to aspiring architect aiming to follow in your footsteps
Get involved, get out of the studio and see the community you want to design for Explore and be ambitious, take the time to have fun and explore new places and things, as aspiring architects it is important to take the opportunity to experience the many facets of inspiration and challenges the community around you can bring It is easy for us to put our heads down and focus on studying and creating, but in order for us to design for change or to face challenges we first must experience who and what we want to design for. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take opportunities to help expand your knowledge and experiences.

John G. Thorpe (1944-2016) founded his own architectural firm, John Garrett Thorpe & Associates, in Oak Park in 1984 and earned renown as a restoration architect through work on numerous Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and elsewhere, including the Robie House in Chicago, the Roberts House in River Forest, Illinois, and the Heurtley House, William Martin House and Unity Temple in Oak Park He was instrumental in the preservation of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, serving as author, with Don Kalec, of the master plan for the property’s restoration to its 1909 condition, published as The Plan for Restoration and Adaptive Use of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in 1978. He also acted to secure its purchase by the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation (now the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust), which he helped to found, and to implement its 13-year restoration process.

With the quantity and frequency of revisions on some projects, it's not hard to see how occasionally some things aren't built from the latest drawings
I've never seen something quite like this, but I was sent a picture a few years ago of a large cloudshaped hole that had been cut in a concrete floor slab. The contractor had scaled the delta cloud on the plans and then duplicated it on the floor. Click here for a cartoon commemorating that event.

AIA'S 2023 TWENTY-FIVE YEAR AWARD: GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a groundbreaking example of how art museums can transform and revitalize their surroundings It was designed by Frank O Gehry, FAIA, who envisioned a new form of architecture that would connect with the culture and history of Spain's Basque region The museum opened in 1997, at a time when digital and analog practices were merging, and has since become a vital part of Bilbao's urban life. It is a symbol of the power of good design to inspire creativity and reshape communities.
The museum's location was chosen in 1991, when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation proposed to build a museum in Bilbao's industrial district, which had suffered from economic decline Gehry suggested a site next to the Nervión River, which flows through Bilbao to the sea He won the project because of his vision to create a new identity for Bilbao through his innovative design The museum is situated at the heart of a cultural triangle, formed by the Museo de Bellas Artes, Deusto university, and the historic town hall. It is easily accessible from the city's business and historic districts, and the Puente de La Salve Bridge passes over its eastern edge, making it one of Bilbao's main entrances.
The museum's exterior combines Spanish limestone in its rectangular buildings with titanium panels in its sculpted forms, which reflect Bilbao's industrial heritage. The design team used 3D modeling software CATIA to optimize the design process, reduce costs and waste, and translate Gehry's vision into reality
