I wanted to start off this month’s message with a thank you to Taryn Kole, Vianey Lozoya and Carlos Fernandez as well as the many volunteers who helped put together our AIA Las Vegas ARC Product Show 2023. Both during the Design Connections Luncheon and the product show later in the day I got to speak with many of the vendors and show participants Overall, everyone was positive about the new location and ability for many of our AIA Las Vegas Allied members to speak personally with our AIA members. The speed dating format to the luncheon is always an interesting way to break the ice and speak with many of our firm principles and leaders

This month, on October 13th we will be having our Ultimate Drive at Topgolf. If you haven’t signed up, please do so quickly as last year’s inaugural event was much fun, and we look forward to continuing this fall event into the future. This is a great time out together and you don’t have to worry about skill level, just come and have fun.

I’ll keep this month’s message short As I mentioned last month, the Golden Knights are back starting their season as the Stanley Cup Champions and I’m going to get ready for the games.

Go Knights Go!

Sincerely,

3 3 WELCOME WELCOME

I am a member of AIA because…

AIA is an organization that allows me to continually connect with the creative minds who make our community what it is today I enjoy making connections, building relationships, and learning from others in the AEC industry.

How would you introduce yourself to the world as an industry professional? In a few sentences, share your passion, vision, and achievements in the field.

I am a person who takes pride in everything I do, from establishing relationships with our team and clients to facilitating a culture of growth and excellence I have been in the AEC industry for 15 years, and while I like the get-itdone, daily grind mentality, it has been nice to shift to a more people-centered approach over the last few years. If being a leader at TJK has taught me anything, it has taught me the importance of listening, compassion, curiosity, and thinking more about how to help others personally and professionally.

What advice would you offer to aspiring industry professionals aiming to follow in your footsteps?

There are many opportunities to join the AEC industry without being a licensed professional. If you have a passion for business, finance, or marketing, there is a place for you in our industry, and more importantly, there is a place for you in leadership. Take the time to find what you love and take every opportunity to make connections because you never know where a career in the AEC industry will take you.

Describe the pivotal moment or influence that ignited your passion for the AEC Industry.

I didn’t know it then, but the opportunity to live abroad and assist with residential remodels and interior design showed me how much I enjoy seeing the end-user experience To see their excitement when the project was complete and to help execute their vision was worth every minute of hard work Now, I get to experience our team creating spaces that bring happiness to kids at their new school, a neighborhood utilizing a park that wasn’t there before, or knowing that a public space provides shelter and safety to those in need Any time you contribute to making a difference in your community can be pivotal Ultimately, the AEC industry found me, but the passion for what we create and how I contribute continues to be ignited from small interactions to big moments over the course of my professional career

How do you believe consultants can enhance their value proposition to clients?

As consultants, we support through team collaboration, bringing innovative designs and ideas to the table, helping solve problems, and producing a quality product. It’s key for consultants to discover what is important to their clients and the owners and be the team that helps bring that to life.

If you had the power to alter one aspect of our profession right now, what would that be and why?

Of course, there is a special place in my heart for those whose work resides in the marketing realm of the AEC space. Depending on the city, firm, or AEC community culture, it would be to ensure understanding and value of what our industry's hard-working marketers and business developers offer. Their creative minds do much more than put together proposals and marketing material. The knowledge and expertise of coordinators and managers in these sectors enrich a firm's culture, strengthen relationships, elevate branding, touch people through stories and thought leadership, and provide a different perspective on business (to name a few)

Scholarship for First-Generation Las Vegas Students

Article published by: CoStar News

August 29, 2023

Minjia Yan, director of investment at Millennium Commercial Properties and a real estate lecturer at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, wants to give back to the community and school where she teaches

So, Yan said she "did something cool" and established the Minjia Yan First-Generation Real Estate Endowed Scholarship to support first-generation students who study real estate as a major or minor at the UNLV Lee Business School Students who are the first in their families to attend college and have at least a 275 GPA are eligible to apply

Yan, a member of the UNLV Alumni Association, got the idea and inspiration for the scholarship last year when she saw a few other alumni establish scholarships.

"Many first-generation students do not have a lot of support and resources to enter the commercial real estate industry, which is an industry built by networks, connections, and access to capital," Yan, who grew up in Las Vegas, said in a text message. "So I wanted to support this talent pool of first-generation students who can bring unique perspectives and experiences to our industry."

The scholarship, with funds that can be applied toward a combination of tuition and school expenses, will be awarded each spring semester by UNLV staff Yan said she will not participate in the selection but will be notified of the winner.

Yan also said the scholarship is designed "preferably to award students who intend to work in the greater Las Vegas area" after graduation. "I really want to see good, young talent" remain in the market, she said
