Member Spotlight Kimberly Galbe, Assoc. AIA

I AM AIA LAS VEGAS MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

I Am A Member Of The American Institute Of Architects (AIA) Because... by nature, architecture is a collaborative field. As a designer, I seek to further the influence of design and enhance the built environment. AIA provides me with an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and come together to have a voice in issues that impact the kind of cities we live in.

I was born and raised in Venezuela and immigrated to Las Vegas in 2013. I received my Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architecture from UNLV in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Since then, I have been working at EV&A Architects where I am currently a Lead Designer. My passion lies in the design process, where I find great satisfaction in the opportunity to explore a new subject matter and challenge myself to find an architectural solution for it. "The design is not just what it looks like and feels like. The design is how it works” — Steve Jobs

I am excited to take on the role of the 2023-2024 AIA NV STAR (State/Territory Associate Representative). I'm looking forward to meeting and working with fellow members to promote and advance our profession. I am actively involved in other professional organizations such as NAIOP (National Association of Industrial and Office Properties) and ULI (Urban Land Institute) as I truly believe that we can achieve more when we work together.

In my free time, I love to do things that broaden my perspective and inspire me. I enjoy walking with my dog Nala, traveling, finding new places to eat, and meeting new people.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned? It is impossible for any individual to possess all knowledge and skills, but everyone has their own unique strengths and contributions. Have confidence in your abilities and the value you bring to the profession.

How can architects provide “value add” to their clients? As design professionals, we continuously strive to offer outstanding services to clients and projects, consistently working to meet or exceed expectations. But, saying "yes" to every request is not always the best approach. At times, declining a request is the best way to serve the client and project.

Where will you be in 20 years? Somewhere by the ocean, waking up at 6:00am to walk my pup and watch the sunrise with my feet in the sand before getting the day started.

What person, living or dead, would you most like to talk with? My grandfather whom I never got the chance to meet. He was a practicing architect and architecture professor in Venezuela. I often wonder what his thoughts on the profession were, and how he might have influenced my career.

3 AIA LAS VEGAS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I write this month’s message, we are getting ready for the AIA Las Vegas Membership Kick-off 2023 event, ‘Designing the Framework for Advocacy’ breakfast. I am looking forward to moderating a panel that is scheduled to include the following panelists:

• Senator Fabian Doñate – District 10 – Nevada Senate

• Commissioner William McCurdy – District D – Clark County

• Councilwoman Nancy Brune – Ward 6 – City of Las Vegas

• Planning Commissioner Serena Kasama – Ward 4 – City of Las Vegas

• Mike Hillerby – Lobbyist – Kaempfer Crowell

• Christopher Lujan, AIA – Design Principal – TSK

I am hoping that as you read this month’s newsletter that you have taken advantage of your membership and joined us for what I anticipate being an educational discussion hosted by the Government Affairs Committee.

This past month, AIA Las Vegas was represented in attendance of the City of Las Vegas – 2023 State of the City Address by Troy Moser, AIA, Jason Andoscia, AIA, and Carlos Fernandez. If you follow us on social media, you will see the post about, ‘Nevada architects are here, listening and ready to work.’ This has been a step forward for our chapter as we look to seek out our own representation as the trio listened to Mayor Goodman speak about the upcoming year.

In February, our membership meeting is organized by our Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee as they host a virtual meeting focused on Black History Month. The Jedi committee is proud to invite Janna Ireland to discuss her work photographing buildings by Paul Revere Williams, FAIA. Please look to your emails and sign up for the virtual presentation scheduled for February 22nd at 6pm.

As I close out my message this month, I want to offer my congratulations to my fellow Board Member, Melvin Green, AIA who was awarded the Business and Economic Advancement Award, which was part of the ninth annual City of Las Vegas African American Trailblazer Service Awards. Congratulations Mel, this community and city are fortunate for what you give of yourself, and I could not think of a more deserving person to be recognized.

Sincerely,

MEETINGS

FEBRUARY 2023 MEETING - "ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY OF PAUL R. WILLIAMS"

We invite you to join the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee as they host our virtual February Membership Meeting focused on Black History Month.

When: Wednesday, February 22nd - 6:00 - 7:30pm

Where: Your Office, Your Home, Your Car! It's a Virtual Event!

The JEDI Committee has invited Janna Ireland to discuss her work photographing structures by Paul Revere Williams, FAIA.

ABOUT PAUL REVERE WILLIAMS, FAIA:

“With a client list that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood history, Paul Revere Williams developed an incredible portfolio of nearly 3,000 beautiful buildings during his five-decade career that was marked with a number of broken barriers. An architect whose work carried the glamour of classic Southern California style to the rest of the world, Williams was the among the first black students admitted to the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, the first black architect to become a member of the AIA, and, later, the first black member to be inducted into the Institute’s College of Fellows.” – AIA National Gold Medal Recipient Submittal

ABOUT JANNA IRELAND: Janna Ireland lives in Los Angeles, where she is an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Occidental College. Her photographic work is primarily concerned with the themes of family, home, and the expression of Black identity in American culture. In 2016, she began photographing structures designed by legendary Black architect Paul R. Williams. A collection of 250 of these photographs was published in a monograph entitled Regarding Paul R. Williams: A Photographer’s View, in 2020. In 2021, Ireland was awarded a Peter E. Pool Research Fellowship by the Nevada Museum of Art to photograph Williams’ work in Nevada. A solo exhibition of this work opened at the Nevada Museum of Art in 2022 and traveled to the Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas, where it will be on view until May 30, 2023.

A broad selection of Ireland’s work was included in the exhibition “Family Album: Dannielle Bowman, Janna Ireland and Contemporary Works from LACMA” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Charles White Elementary School Gallery. Ireland’s photographs are held in the permanent collections of institutions including LACMA, the Nevada Museum of Art, the California African American Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. Her work has been the subject of articles in publications including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Harvard Design Magazine, and Aperture. She holds an MFA from the UCLA Department of Art and a BFA from the Department of Photography and Imaging at NYU.

IN MEMORIUM - OUR FRIEND, YSIDRO R. BARRON

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of long-time Las Vegas Architect Ysidro R. Barron on December 15th, 2022. Ysidro was born in Tucson, AZ. in 1953. After graduating from Tucson High School, Ysidro attended Yale University and graduated with a degree in Architecture.

Ysidro moved to Las Vegas in 1981 to begin his career in architecture which he continued till his passing. He built his own architectural practice focusing on and contributing to the built environment by way of schools, public housing, civic and hospitality projects. He is remembered by those in his industry as a hands on mentor who led by example.

Ysidro accomplished many things and was always very proud of his family. Those who knew him will remember him as a fun-loving person who enjoyed entertaining friends at the bar he built in his home and rooting for the Green Bay Packers. He was also an avid athlete who loved playing squash and golfing at the Black Mountain Golf Course.

A celebration of life was held on January 17th. He is survived by his wife Ann, his brothers Ron and Alex, his daughters Amalia Kindel Ranck (Steve) and Amanda Katherine Barron.

CUNHINGHAM'S SUKREET SINGH KNOWS THE WHATS, WHYS AND HOWS OF NET ZERO

Not so long ago, the concept of designing to net zero, whether energy, water, waste or carbon emissions, seemed beyond reach.

Then came the obvious weather extremes, many of which could be attributable to climate change. Now, the race is on to do something about it. In response, net zero has evolved from an abstract concept to encompassing strategies used by government and businesses to help tackle the causes of increasing climate-change risks.

But what is net zero? It can be many things including net zero energy, net zero water, net zero waste, etc. But, in this context, and probably the most holistic and metric that encompasses everything is net zero carbon. It is a state in which greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere are balanced by their removal from that same atmosphere.

This is the theory. CLICK HERE to read the rest of the article Join

The inspiring story of Eames, the modernist industrial designer, will tell the story behind the iconic furniture, architecture, textiles, and graphics she created herself and in partnership wither husband, noted designer and architect Charles Eames and their firm The Eames Office. To listen to the podcast, visit https://bwaf.org/resources/podcast on March 8.

Future 2023 episodes of the podcast series document the lives of Boston’s legendary TAC founders Jean Bodman Fletcher and Sarah Pillsbury Harkness, as well as the African American architect and hidden talent Amaza Lee Meredith. Later in the year, BWAF will present additional episodes on inventor and suffragist Anna Wagner Keichline and the first-ever winner of a Pulitzer Prize for architecture criticism, Ada Louise Huxtable.

New Angle: Voice is sponsored by Knoll, a MillerKnoll company, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Current episodes are found everywhere podcasts are available, including on Apple Podcasts apple.co/3t9xUqP and bwaf.org/resources/podcast on the BWAF website.
