Let them fly over. It’s good to be in the Midwest for many reasons. While our design community lost many talented folks to the Great Recession, we fared better than most others around the country. The quantity and quality of our projects are on the increase as evidenced in this year’s Design Awards submittals. We think you’ll enjoy.
Heading down brighter and better roads allows new traditions to be formed. The impact of design and architecture is never overly appreciated nor overly celebrated. With new directives in mind, this year’s Design Awards committee established several priorities, including an emphasis on the celebration aspect of this year’s awards and to further embrace technology - with social media and the first digital edition of the Design Excellence book. We also charted
a new path with special recognition of our influential sports architecture contingencysomething only our AIA KC chapter can celebrate. Let’s have some fun and shout from the rooftops – it’s well deserved.

Margaret received formal architectural training from both the University of Virginia, Charlottesville and Washington University in Saint Louis. She is currently the studio leader for Studio Gang Architects, where she is responsible for design, project management and corporate management. Her skills help ensure the integrity and quality of projects ranging from: Aqua Tower, one of the few high-rises in the world that creates a community on its façade, to Maisonette, a transformation of a former hotel ballroom into a modern apartment with refined material details. Margaret’s portfolio also includes work at the City of Hyde Park, The Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo and the Columbia College Media Production Center, a LEED Gold professional-level media teaching facility which advances the building itself as a teaching tool.

Mark is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. He is a leader in the design of public places including the Vancouver Convention Centre West. Mark also has been extensively published online, in print and in broadcast media. Eric is a graduate of Oklahoma State University, and Washington University’s Graduate School of Architecture. As a member of Minneapolis-based firm HGA, Eric collaborated with the Pritzker Prize winning office of Herzog & De Meuron on the Walker Art Center Expansion. His role was invaluable as a contributor to the team of HOK and David Chipperfield Architects on the Saint Louis Art Museum Expansion. Eric enjoys his role of Professor of Practice at his alma mater, Washington University in Saint Louis. His passion for the discipline is proven by his numerous distinctions, academic honors, design awards and placement in seven design competitions.
MITCHELL SQUIRE

Mitchell is currently the Associate Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University, where he also received his B.Arch and M.Arch degrees. His received the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture New Faculty Teaching Award (2005) and the ACSA Creative Achievement Award (2009). He was also listed among 25 artists in Art Review’s Magazine’s annual issue of ‘Future Greats’ in 2011. During his tenure at Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture of Des Moines, his design for the Iowa State University Richard O. Jacobson Athletic building received local and regional accolades. In addition to being an educator, designer, collector and researcher, Mitchell’s art has been exhibited in museums throughout the world. He will be a visiting artist at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, and Cannonball in Miami next year. His craft and appreciation for art and architecture is coupled with his passion for teaching and inspiring.

May holds a Bachelors in Fine Arts from The Rhode Island School of Design, where she participated in the European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. She also holds a Master’s Degree from Domus Academy in Milan, Italy. She is an artist who draws from her formal training in industrial design, and an educator who is interested in blurred boundaries between architecture, industrial design and art. She has taught at The Rhode Island School of Design, Kansas City Art Institute and currently teaches for the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Outside of academia, May’s work has received national critical reviews in Art in America, Art Papers and National Public Radio. She has also received a Charlotte Street Foundation Fellowship, Hall Center for the Humanities Creative Work Fellowship, Andy Warhol Foundation Rocket Grant, an Art Omi International Artist Residency, as well as her own AIA Kansas City Allied Arts & Craftsmanship Award.

Paul was a founder of the Ellerbe Becket Sports Design Office in Kansas City that designed $3.5 billion of sports projects during his tenure. He shepherded a practice which grew from four to over 150 employees and developed the international business including the Manchester and Oberhausen arenas. Paul is passionate about speaking and writing about the profession, and his writings can be found in Stadia Magazine, Pan Stadia Quarterly Review, and Architectural Record.
