AIA Kansas City is and has been a leader in architectural design for decades. The Design Excellence Kansas City Awards Program is a celebration of great architecture that is raising the bar of design both regionally and nationally. AIA Kansas City Member Firms, both large and small, consistently deliver innovative projects, and you will find the Best of 2017 featured in this publication.
This year, the Design Excellence committee continued on the path set by years past. The award categories were arranged by scale. Architecture projects were judged against others with similar constraints and were organized in Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large categories. An Interior Architecture, Concept Design, and a Divine Detail category provided an opportunity to highlight the depth and diversity of design talent in our chapter by allowing firms to present their best work to be evaluated against similar projects from their peers.
We are excited to have a distinguished jury this year from AIA Seattle. The jury consisted of David Miller, FAIA (The Miller Hull Partnership), Anne Schopf, FAIA (Mahlum Architects) and Bruce Anderson, AIA (Cutler Anderson Architects).

meet the jurors
Bruce Anderson, aia
Bruce Anderson has been a Principal of Cutler Anderson Architects on Bainbridge Island, Washington since 2001. Along with partner, James Cutler, Anderson’s unobtrusive style preserves the site landscape while incorporating form, function and aesthetics into a building’s design.
Under the firm’s environmental philosophy, Bruce has designed churches, residences, schools, and other spaces both in the United States as well as overseas. He is registered in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Vermont and has both Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Washington.
Bruce served as Chair of the Bainbridge Island Planning Commission from 1996-1998. Additionally, while serving as President of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust, Bruce was instrumental in land division and acquisition for not only the Land Trust, but also for the Bainbridge Island Park District, as well as Open Space for the City of Bainbridge Island.
He has taught at the University of Washington and served as a design juror for several courses and competitions around the country.
Anne Schopf, Faia
Anne Schopf is Design Partner at Mahlum Architects, a 78-year-old architecture firm with offices in Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. Under her leadership, Mahlum received the 2014 Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects Northwest and Pacific Region (AIA NWPR).
Mahlum is respected for its thoughtful, community-oriented work serving educational, healthcare, and private clients. In addition, Anne was the 2013 recipient of the AIA NWPR Medal of Honor, recognizing excellence in design, the practice of architecture, architectural education, and service to the profession; and two of her projects at Mahlum have been recognized with AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Green Projects Awards. Since 2007, Anne has been actively involved with the AIA’s Committee on Design (COD) and AIA Seattle, and she was recently appointed to the AIA National COTE Advisory Group.

David Miller, FAIA
A founding partner of Miller Hull, David is known nationally for pursuing innovative sustainable and high performance design strategies while responding to each site’s unique conditions and surrounding context. David has served as the design partner on numerous projects at Miller Hull.
David is the former Chair of the Department of Architecture and currently a tenured professor of architecture at the University of Washington. He has been a member of numerous design juries including serving as Chair of National AIA Honor Awards in 2011. He has a long record of lectures at universities throughout the U.S, as well as Canada, Japan and Italy and taught design studio as a visiting professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, University of Oregon and University of Maryland. Miller has directed the University of Washington’s Architecture in Rome Program in 1996, 2000, 2003 and 2009 and the University of Washington’s Mexico City studio in Winter 2013 and 2017. In 2006, David received three unique awards: the Washington State University Alumni Achievement Award, the Seattle AIA Gold Medal, and the AIA Pacific Region Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement recognizing him as an architect whose career has made a significantly positive contribution to the built environment.
Recent projects of note include: The Pike Place MarketFront in Seattle, the Renton Library for King County (national award winner), and design of the new American Embassy in Guatemala.
