AIA College of Fellows Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.

ith more than 40 Million visitors a year, Las Vegas will boldly be on display this June as AIA Nevada hosts this year's National Conference - A'19.

With its ever changing skyline, Las Vegas is clearly demonstrating how architects are designing a better future by taking on the critical challenges facing our cities around the world every day.

Our hope is that you’ll gain actionable insights that will inspire you and your practice, from some of the most creative architects, designers, firms, and futurists from around the world. As this year’s Chancellor of the College of Fellows, it gives me great pride to welcome you to my home town where you’ll discover that we are much more than just casinos and nightlife, that we are like most metropolitan communities comprised of performing art centers, galleries, hospitals, schools, parks and community centers that are part of our everyday lives. Naturally, we have an exciting lineup of A’19 COF programming for you, beginning on Wednesday with our 23rd annual Chancellor’s Cup Golf Tournament (EV101) which will be held at my home course, the TPC Summerlin! The format is Captain’s Choice and everyone is welcome.

Remember – you do not have to be a Fellow to play.

Starting Thursday morning at 9:30 AM please plan

to attend Attributes of Future-Use Architecture (TH218) as the 2017 Latrobe Prize Laureate and their principal investigators release the findings of their two-year research project on the topic of futureuse architecture. Learn more about this exciting approach to building that prepares for and enables persistent change in the future. Later that afternoon the Annual Regional Representatives Meeting will be held in the Convention Center at 1:30 PM. The work of our Regional Representatives is the backbone of the College and we spend this time discussing the past year's efforts as well as upcoming programming and events.

The College’s next event will be “Party with The Fellows” (EV206) which will be held Thursday night at 7:00 PM at the World Market Center’s WorldView Room providing unparalleled views of Downtown Las Vegas. Meet the Class of 2019 Fellows as well as this year’s recipients of the Young Architect Awards. On Friday morning our Annual 2+2, panel discussion (FR205) takes place at 9:30 AM at the Westgate Hotel and is open to all. The seminar pairs Fellows and Young Architects on stage sharing their thoughts on design and practice so you'll not want to miss it.

Meeting of the Regional Representatives to the College of Fellows at A'19: Thursday, June 6th, at 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm Location: LVCC - Room N205 This is our annual opportunity for the Regional Representatives to share ideas, receive updates from the COF ExCom, and discuss ways to continually improve the RR program to support the missions of the College. We had great participation last year in New York, and thanks to the effort AIA makes to give us a great time slot (remember our 7 am meetings from past years??), it should be easier for all of the RRs to attend and participate. Since this is my last year as Chair, I want to invite you all to attend and meet Jeanne Jackson, FAIA, who will assume the role of RR Chair at the end of this year. We will also pass out the latest Welcome Packet for Regional Representatives, the COF Newsletter, and we'll have supplies of COF stationary to be used for condolence letters and notes to be

sent to families of deceased Fellows over the upcoming year.

Also try to make the College of Fellows events such as the Investiture right down the strip from the Wynn Hotel, and the Annual Business Meeting of the College of Fellows luncheon.

This is an opportunity to meet the leadership of the College of Fellows as well and leave Las Vegas energized to serve and support your Region's Fellows and encourage future candidates. The Party with the Fellows and the Convocation dinner are also celebrations of our new Fellows and a chance to recruit help for your Region's events for Fellows.

Inducted into Nebraska Hall of Fame

Child Art Magazine

Thomas Rogers Kimball (April 19, 1862 – September 7, 1934) was an American architect in Omaha, Nebraska. An architect-in-chief of the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha in 1898, he served as national President of the American Institute of Architects from 1918–1920 and from 1919-1932 served on the Nebraska State Capitol Commission.

His bust will be located in the Nebraska State Capitol along with twenty-five other famous Nebraskans, including William Jennings Bryan, Chief Standing Bear, Willa Cather, and others.

A Pencil in God's Hand

The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is within the Vatican walls and is built adjacent to the Domus Sanctae Marthae, a hotel for visiting clergy. In 1993, Pope John Paul II made the decision to have a hotel and chapel constructed at the Vatican in order to accommodate visiting clergy year round, but most especially during a Papa Conclave, when cardinals housed at the Vatican Museum where they slept on cots in the halls with bedpans by their side. The location of the new hotel and chapel would allow the cardinals to attend Mass in sequester, then go directly through St. Peter’s Basilica and into the Sistine Chapel to vote. Today, that chapel- The Chapel of the Holy Spirit- is used for the more than sporadic Conclave. Pope Francis celebrates daily Mass there and also uses it for gatherings and audiences with groups of visiting clergy, the Swiss Guard, and the families with special needs children. As you read the story of my journey from Pittsburgh to the Vatican, pencil sketch to blueprint, construction to dedication, I hope you will share in the inspiration, awe, and strengthening of faith that I experienced during this remarkable journey.

PERSISTENT

The 2017 Latrobe Prize laureate recently curated the PERSISTENT exhibition at the A+D Museum in Los Angeles. It marks roughly the halfway point of the two year research project and will continue to find venues to host over the course of the next year. The goal of their research is to identify ways that buildings can change over time and in ways that go beyond simple re-use. They hope that buildings can contribute to society culturally in order to have a lasting impact.

Harold Adams, FAIA

to receive an honorary doctor of letters degree from Texas A&M

Harold Adams ’61, who worked with President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy on federal building projects, then later led the transformation of a one-office architectural firm in Baltimore to a global practice with projects in more than 60 countries, will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree from Texas A&M at their Spring 2019 commencement.

Adams made a name for himself as an architect just four months after earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Texas A&M in 1962, moving to Washington D.C. to work with President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy on building projects in the nation’s capital. Adams was later the project manager for the president’s gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery.

The degree will be the latest in a very long line of awards and honors for Adams, who joined the Texas A&M College of Architecture in fall 2018 as a professor of the practice.

The American Institute of Architects awarded Adams, who retired in 2003, with two of its highest honors, the Kemper Medal, for his leadership in the profession, and membership in its College of Fellows. UPDATE From the COF Executive Committee

Young Architects Forum

As your COF liaison to the AIA Young Architects

Forum (YAF), it was my privilege to join with seventeen enthusiastic and well-prepared Young Architect Regional Directors (YARDs) and the eight member AdCom at their annual meeting in early February. Escaping the chills of winter, the sessions were held in the affable and charming historic old town San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In addition, a draft proposal by the vigorous YAF leadership team was presented to the assembly that delineated a structured, nationwide mentorship program. Envisioned is the formation of small working groups of young architects and AIA Fellows in various locales that would meet on a regular basis.

The program is intended to assist young architects in defining their legacy within the profession by pairing members of the COF with young architects.

Part of the rationale for the joint meeting in San Juan was to provide an opportunity for the attendees to also participate in a two-day charrette/workshop following the annual meeting. This activity was a “hands on” service project; a joint exercise and effort for designated post hurricane re-construction projects at two selected local parks and playgrounds.

The COF Executive Committee was quick to embrace this collaborative proposition at its Spring Meeting in Denver. The program will remain as a pilot for 2019, with the expectation of expanding this outreach initiative in 2020 and the years following.

As in previous years, the animated YAF leadership conference was conducted concurrently with the annual meeting of the vibrant leadership of the National Associates Committee (NAC) that also included the Regional Associates Directors (RADs); representing the Emerging Professionals (EPs) network. Conference workshops included sessions on short-and long range planning and initiatives directed toward future collaboration and mentorship.

Note as well: over the past several years, the COF and YAF have worked in partnership on impressive sessions at the Conference on Architecture. A’19 - AIA’s National The Conference in Las Vegas is providing an opportunity to participate in an exciting golf event: June 5th.

The Annual Chancellor’s Cup Open is an ideal opportunity for a

day of golf and fellowship with AIA Members and guests before the National AIA Conference in Las Vegas. This year’s tournament will mark the 23nd year of the event and will be played at the prestigious TPC Summerlin, home of Tiger Woods first PGA victory and the Shriners Invitational. In the spring of 2011, leaders in the AIA

Gulf States Region began planning a unique opportunity for students, associates and young professional architects of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Our fivestate region is geographically spread over many miles and represents roughly 900 associate members. We received a grant from the AIA College of Fellows (COF) after a financial commitment from each state to match the funds if our grant was successful.

That was the beginning—our acceptance of a Component Excellence Award for knowledge sharing in 2017 was an honor we accepted with a great deal of pride and reflection on the past seven years. There have been three successful Emerging Professional Symposiums, partnering with architecture schools, community builders and AIA leaders to bring nationally recognized designers and ARE programming (University of Memphis Architecture Department 2012; Tulane College of Architecture in 2014; and the University of Arkansas College of Architecture in 2016) to over 700 young professionals.

This would not have been possible without the support of the COF who have generously awarded a grant for each symposium. However, it is the vision and commitment of our young leaders who also deserve the accolades. They take full responsibility to develop the themes, find the speakers, city planners, owner groups 22

and other industry partners. They share resources and program ideas and discuss issues important to members in their respective locations. Similarly, many of our Fellows have been presenters and mentors. Imagine the excitement of an architecture student listening to presenters such as Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, Allen Eskew, FAIA, Allison Anderson, FAIA, and a diverse group of others.

The goals of the EP Symposiums are the same as the COF and YAF, revolving around the themes of leadership, fellowship and mentorship. It has been encouraging to see the EPs who were not currently engaged in their local components suddenly become active after attending. It has helped ‘bridge the gap’ of student to intern to licensure by bringing them together to participate in programs tailored to their common interests.

It is our hope that it has illustrated the ability of and interest in regional cooperation and encourages the same nationwide.

Perhaps, Dan Pitera, FAIA said it best: “The Emerging Gulf States Symposium is more than a conference. It offers a vision of leadership that is nurturing and inspiring to emerging professionals, students and other practitioners. Quite simply, the Symposium uplifts the quality of architecture and all of its practitioners around the Gulf States region— and I dare say the country.”

2014, The AIA|DC Emerging Architects Committee came up with a simple idea: create a platform for recent graduates to present their architectural thesis projects to members of the AIA. This led to the creation of the First Annual AIA|DC Thesis Showcase. The objective of the showcase was to bridge the gap between recent graduates and practicing architects by providing an opportunity for young professionals to gain experience presenting in a public venue while simultaneously allowing practitioners to view a sample of work emerging from architecture schools. Each year several presenters are selected to speak for ten minutes each, with a moderator taking questions from the audience and engaging in a discussion between project themes. The program includes a networking reception with opportunities for conversation between the presenters and attendees. Over the past five years there have been presenters from over a dozen schools who showcased a wide variety of topics ranging from designing for autism to how architecture can be used in the healing process of human trafficking victims.

For the 5th year hosting the Thesis Showcase, the Emerging Architects Committee wanted to celebrate the achievements of the recent graduates. In addition to the annual lecture night, the program featured a gallery exhibit with the help of a 2018 College of Fellows Emerging Professionals Grant. The idea for the gallery came from the multiple applications that the committee had received in the past that were unable to be shown at the lecture night. Adding a gallery enabled the work of applicants who created great work to also be displayed, even if they were not chosen to be a lecture night speaker.

26 recent graduates submitted their work to the showcase, from over ten different schools.

With support of two other AIA DC committees, the Technology Committee and the Design + Wellbeing Committee, two local COF members, and USGBC the submissions were narrowed down to 4 finalists, 2 honorable mentions and, 14 gallery exhibitions. A total of 20 projects from recent graduates were displayed in a public gallery located in the heart of downtown DC for two months.

The Fifth Annual AIA|DC Thesis Showcase saw the largest attendance for the lecture night since its inception five years ago. Over sixty people attended the opening night lecture for the showcase, which sold out the venue. The recent graduates were also able to directly connect with leaders within the industry during the event and bring their thesis ideas beyond the realm of academia and into the real world of architecture.

Projects in the exhibition examined many diverse topics such as communities, death, environments, industry, nature, sustainability, transportation systems, and urbanism. In addition to showcasing the work of recent graduates the showcase allowed The Emerging Architects Committee to connect with recent graduates and encourage them to get involved with the AIA. The event was able to showcase the work of recent graduates that does not get the attention it deserves and helped to bridge the gap that is often there between academia and practicing architecture.
