AIA College of Fellows Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.

Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Annual Business Meeting as we gather to officially conduct the business of the AIA College of Fellows. It has been thirteen years since Las Vegas has hosted AIA’s National Conference and on behalf of our local and state chapters, we welcome you to our fair city! It is an honor to serve as the 57th Chancellor of College of Fellows this year and it is serendipitous that my term in office coincided with the conference being held in my home town personally making this a very special occasion.

Beyond the traditional reporting of the College’s activities and finances, this year’s Annual Report includes not only a listing of this year’s Class of Fellows but a new “Communications Report.” Over the last 4 years, the College has worked diligently to pull back the curtain and get its’ story out to our current and future members to strengthen our purpose and missions. This new section of the report clearly demonstrates that we are making an impact with our publications reaching more than 34,000 readers around the world.

The College continues to evolve as a more relevant organization to our members and to those we serve ever striving to do more. Achieving Fellowship is a significant mark of every member’s contribution to the profession, to our Institute, to the public good, and to the value and standing of architecture and architects in our global community. Fellowship, however is not the culmination of a member’s contributions. Instead it is a call to action. Becoming a Fellow uniquely positions each individual elevated to become an advocate for practice-focused, cutting-edge research and for fostering the success of future professionals. This call to action begins with financially supporting the College—an organization dedicated to advancing the practice and profession of architecture through research and mentorship. This charge goes out to every member of this year’s class of Fellows and to those with many years of knowing the importance of achieving Fellowship.

We are honored and grateful to those members who have made significant donations in the past, especially our Legacy Donors. These individuals cumulatively donate $10,000 or more over years or make a bequeathment to the College of Fellows Fund. We also thank the AIA for its continuing significant financial and administrative support.

Edward A. Vance, FAIA The 57th Chancellor of The American Institute of Architects College of Fellows

ance was elected Chancellor by members of the College of Fellows citing his leadership and service to the Institute, the profession of architecture and his community. He is the first chancellor to be named from the state of Nevada and only the third to come from the Western Mountain Region since its inception in the early 1950s. Vance’s engagement with AIA exemplifies how sustained service to the Institute advances the profession of architecture regionally and nationally.

Vance served as College of Fellows Vice-Chancellor in 2018, as Jury Member for the 2019 Latrobe Prize, Secretary for the College of Fellows from 2016-2017, on the AIA National Board from 2010–2012, and as Chair of AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion Jury in 2012.

Vance received the AIA Richard Upjohn Fellowship Medal in 2012 for contributions to the profession through his service on the AIA National Board of Directors. Vance voluntarily authors and edits the AIA College of Fellows monthly newsletter as well E-Mail Address Phone

as numerous college publications and books for AIA leadership and award recipients.

He has been awarded the AIA Nevada Young Architect Citation, the AIA Nevada Service Award and the AIA Nevada Silver Medal. He was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in early 2014 and received the AIA WMR Silver Medal in October of the same year, the highest honor bestowed on an architect in a six-state region. Mr. Vance is actively registered as an Architect in seven states and is NCARB certified.

Vance attended Moorhead State University for three years before receiving his Bachelor of Arts (1979) and Bachelor of Architecture (1981) degrees from North Dakota State University. He moved to Las Vegas in 1987 where he has practiced for more than 30 years.

He is the Founding Principal of EV&A Architects, a Las Vegas based design firm specializing in commercial, hospitality and healthcare architecture.

Peter G. Kuttner, FAIA Boston, Massachusetts Term: December 2018 to December 2019

P

eter Kuttner, FAIA is a Principal and pastPresident of CambridgeSeven, a Boston-based firm of architects, planners, urban designers, exhibit designers, and graphic artists. Cambridge Seven, which received the AIA Architecture Firm Award, is known for its work with museums, aquariums, visitors’ centers, hotels, academic buildings, transportation systems, and mixed-use developments.

Peter is known, in particular, for his thoughtful design of spaces for informal and formal learning in aquariums, museums, and exhibits. Peter designed the Knock Knock Children’s Museum in Baton Rouge and the Discovery Museum expansion in Acton, Massachusetts which opened in 2019.

He recently expanded the New England Aquarium and completed the new Children’s Zoo at Franklin Park.

Peter has provided master planning for the Museum of Science in Boston, the South Carolina Aquarium, and the Louisiana State Museum as well as architectural E-Mail Address Phone

design for the new U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He is currently serving as Principal-inCharge for the Hohhot Children’s Discovery Museum in China and the new Mote Marine Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Peter has been an active AIA member since student days, and is a past Boston Society of Architects (BSA) President, national AIA Board Member, and Vice President of AIA. He currently serves on the BSA Board, The BSA Foundation Board, is an Overseer Emeritus of the Boston Architectural College, and is the Vice Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows. He contributed his architectural sketches to the BSA Chapter Letter for many years, created “Marginally Architecture” for the BSA magazine Architecture Boston, and continues to sketch around the margins.

ohn Castellana, FAIA serves as Chairman and past-President of TMP Architecture, Inc., a Michigan based Architecture and Interior Design in Bloomfield Hills and Kalamazoo specializing in the planning and design of educational facilities for all stages of life.

activities including Chair the College of Fellows Jury in 2015, serving as a Jury member for the national AIA Honor Awards, and being the American representative to the International Union of Architects working committee on Educational and Cultural Spaces.

An integral member of TMP’s school design team since 1972, he earnd his Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois and his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kent State University in 1971.

John was named Young Professional of the Year in 1978 by Building Design and Construction magazine, and elected to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects in 1988 (at the age of 39) for Design and Service to the Profession.

Throughout his 47 year career, he has concentrated his efforts on the planning and design of innovative educational facilities that have received over 60 design awards. In recent years, John has dedicated his practice to focusing on the importance of early education and providing young learners with opportunities to excel. His thoughtful designs emphasize the value of exploration and collaboration, allowing students to develop skills at an early age.

John was also honored as the 2016 AIA Michigan Gold Medalist and the 2000 AIA Detroit Gold Medal Award Winner, recognizing his exceptional talents and commitment to educational planning, design and continual professional local, state and national AIA

John is currently the Secretary of the College of Fellows Executive Committee. Following this two year office as Secretary he will serve as Vice Chancellor in 2020 and Chancellor in 2021.

Roger L. Schluntz, FAIA Albuquerque, New Mexico Term: December 2018 to December 2020

Roger L. Schluntz, FAIA Bursar of The American Institute of Architects College of Fellows

P

rofessor and Dean Emeritus Roger L. Schluntz, FAIA teaches at the School of Architecture & Planning at the University of New Mexico, serving as its dean from 1999 until 2011. He is the former dean of architecture at the University of Miami, and was the the director of architecture at Arizona State University, where he established and directed the Joint ASU/City of Phoenix Urban Design Program.

His long and distinguished career in academia began as a faculty member at the University of Nebraska where he was actively involved in planning and transportation issues affecting the City of Lincoln. The co-authorship of “The Nebraska Capitol and Environs Plan� resulted in a First Honor Award in Urban Design from Progressive Architecture magazine.

Schluntz served as the Executive Director of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) from 1977-1980 and is the former secretary of NAAB where served on numerous accreditation E-Mail Address Phone Address

team visits for architecture programs, and more recently accreditation teams for the Landscape Architecture Accrediting Board (LAAB).

An appointed member of the National Register of Peer Professionals for the US GSA, Schluntz has undertaken studies on design quality, design review processes, and urban design guidelines. He has served as the Professional Adviser for over twenty-five major national and international design competitions, and currently serves on the International Competitions Commission for the International Union of Architects (UIA).

In recognition of his contributions and achievements toward enhancing the quality of design of public buildings in the United States, Schluntz was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 1996. He was the 2017 recipient of the AIA New Mexico Medal for Lifetime Achievement, and is also recognized by the ACSA as a Distinguished Professor.

2018 Bursar’s Report

The College Finances The College of Fellows Fund has experienced steady growth each year since Dimeo Schneider & Associates (formerly the Orion Consulting Group) was engaged as the financial adviser for the COF Fund. In 2015, we transferred funds for the Pettigrew Scholarship out of the Fund back to an account that the Young Architects Forum manages. Dimeo Schneider & Associates has maintained the agreed upon performance benchmarks in preserving our investments. The economic climate over the past 10 years has been understandbly volatile and factors suggest this will be true for 2019. Our strategies are carefully managed to reflect the current financial environment for 2019 and the COF Executive Committee has continued quarterly meetings with Dimeo Schneider & Associates to carefully monitor the Fund’s performance.

The AIA College of Fellows Fund experienced a slight decrease in the value of its portfolio during 2018 but at no time during this period has the cumulative Fellows portfolio fallen beneath the gross amount of funds contributed by Fellows.

The AIA continues to support the College’s operational expenses with an annual contribution. This year we recieved $40,000 from the Institute, a 33% increase over previous years. The remainder of revenue for operating expenses is sourced from programs and activities that pay for themselves or that are intended to generate revenue. Expenses include printing and mailing, support of COF programs, A’19 programs, and Executive Committee and staff travel.

The College of Fellows Fund The College of Fellows Fund is the chief source of revenue through which the College fulfills its mission. In turn, the fund, through the COF Latrobe Prize, creates useful resources for AIA and the profession.

The COF Executive Committee has established a policy directing all contributions to the College of Fellows Fund go directly into the Research Fund for endowment. The annual proceeds of the investments provide funding for the Latrobe Fellowship, Emerging Professional Component grants, future publications, and related expenses.

Income from the College’s programs and activities is intended to be the primary funding source for operations.

The College of Fellows Grants Latrobe Prize The College of Fellows expends approximately $60,000 each year in support of the biennial Latrobe Prize. This includes the annual $50,000 Prize disbursement as well as administrative costs.

Component Grants Grants to the Emerging Professional Component Grant program totaled $34,740. Thirteen components across the country received these grants.

Young Architects Forum The College also supports the Young Architects Forum as liaison and the Leadership Institute, through the AIA Center for Civic Leadership, and their Mini-MBA Program at Convention. In addition, the College juries the Young Architect Awards and provides a grant to each of last year’s 18 recipients. Total support of these YAF initiatives was $16,500.
