DESIGN JURY GET TO KNOW THEM

DESIGN AWARDS JURY CHAIR Brian MacKay-Lyons, CM, FRAIC, RCA, AIA, FRIBA | Founding Principal MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Brian MacKay-Lyons was born and raised in the village of Arcadia in Nova Scotia, on the East coast of Canada. Brian received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1978 and his Master of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California Los Angeles, in the United States.

He has developed a leading global practice from Nova Scotia that has been honored with over 170 design awards, including the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Gold Medal to Brian in 2015, the top award in Canada for lifetime contribution in architecture, and the RAIC Firm Award in 2014; eight Governor General Medals, the most prestigious Canadian award that celebrates outstanding design in recently built projects; seven American Institute of Architects (AIA) National and International Honor Awards of Architecture; eighteen Lieutenant Governor’s Medals of Excellence; nine Canadian Architect Awards; four Architectural Record Houses Awards; and fourteen North American Wood Design & Building Awards.

A fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (FRAIC), and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), Brian MacKay-Lyons was named Honorary International Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (Hon. Int. FAIA) in 2001 and in 2016 was made an Honorary International Fellow by the Royal Institute of British Architects (Hon. Int. FRIBA) in London. In 2022, Brian was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian culture. Brian was a full professor and faculty member at Dalhousie University for 37 years and has held 18 endowed academic chairs or visiting professorships at leading universities worldwide, such as: The Peter Behrens School of Architecture, Washington University in St. Louis, Harvard University, and University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design.

In 2024, Brian was awarded an Honorary Doctorate - Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Dalhousie University.

Twenty years after founding the firm Brian MacKay-Lyons Architecture Urban Design, Talbot Sweetapple became a partner in 2005 to form MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects. In 2017, Brian and Talbot were honored as laureates of the prestigious Global Award for Sustainable Architecture by the Cite de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris, under the patronage of UNESCO. The work of the firm has been recognized in 900+ publications including eight monographs and has been featured in 100+ exhibitions internationally.

DESIGN AWARDS JURY Shane Andrews, BEDS, MArch | Architect, Partner MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Shane Andrews is a Partner at MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, where his work is defined by a commitment to design excellence, technical rigor, and an enduring connection to place. Since joining the firm in 2009, he has served as project architect on a broad spectrum of work—from finely detailed private residences to complex commercial and mixed-use developments.

Shane’s role within the practice emphasizes both conceptual clarity and the advancement of building practice and technology. He is recognized for his ability to translate design intent into built form with precision, ensuring that each project reflects the firm’s values of craft, material honesty, and responsiveness to context.

Becoming a Partner in 2017, Shane continues to provide leadership across the studio, fostering a collaborative design culture while guiding projects from concept through execution. His portfolio demonstrates an ability to operate seamlessly across scales, always rooted in a belief that architecture should be both innovative and enduring.

Talbot Sweetapple, BA, BEDS, MArch, FRAIC, AIA | Architect, Partner MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Talbot was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on the East coast of Canada. In 1989, he attended Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Philosophy. In 1997, he graduated with a Master of Architecture as a Sexton Scholar in the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. He was also a recipient of the American Institute of Architects Medal.

After working in both Berlin and Toronto, Talbot joined Brian MacKay-Lyons Architecture Urban Design in 1999. He then became a partner in 2005 to form MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Limited. Talbot has helped the firm build its reputation for design excellence, earning numerous awards, including seven AIA National and International Honor Awards. In 2014, MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects won the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Firm Award. In 2017, Brian and Talbot were honored as laureates of the prestigious Global Award for Sustainable Architecture by the Cite de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris, under the patronage of UNESCO. Talbot has held several visiting Professorships at leading universities and is currently an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Architecture. Talbot was named Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2018.

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY JURY CHAIR Dave Robar, AIA, NCARB, IIDA | Senior Associate | Director Vocon Dave Robar, AIA, is a Cleveland-based architect and award-winning photographer who encourages everyone to be a tourist in their own city. He is currently the Chair of the Lakewood, Ohio Public Art Advisory Board and is a past chair of the Lakewood Architectural Board of Review, among other “hobbies”. Dave recognizes that composition is everything, and that no details are too small to make you realize that nature and the human-made environment can combine to provide wonderful surprises at every turn.

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY JURY Ray Hale Photographer Ray Hale has been a photographer his entire life. It’s been amazing! Now an independent photographer, Ray has served as a Creator, Director and Instructor of Fine Art Photography, at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida and has also served as a student juror for almost 30 years, at both SFC and at the University of Florida. Early years included traveling throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, collecting photography and information for multi-national companies looking to build overseas.

Michael Nilsen Owner | Architect | Designer Object Field LLC Michael Nilsen is an architect and designer with over 25 years of experience spanning architecture, interiors, and visual communication. His multidisciplinary approach allows him to navigate a wide range of design challenges, delivering thoughtful and innovative solutions that blend technical precision with creative vision. Michael is known for his resourcefulness and ability to craft unique responses to complex design problems. Outside of work, he finds inspiration in the beauty of everyday life—especially in his wife’s vibrant flower garden—and enjoys photographing architectural details that capture the character and nuance of the built environment.

AIA CLEVELAND SCHOLARSHIP 2025 AIA Cleveland Scholarship Recipient The AIA Cleveland Annual Scholarship is available to Kent State University students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture, a Master of Architecture degree, or a Master of Architecture dual degree. Students must be in good standing both academically and with the university. Recipients must be able to demonstrate they are active participants in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design’s AIA Student Chapter and show promise for success in the profession.

Alex Frisina, AIAS Kent State University CAED Alex is an undergraduate architecture student at Kent State University, where he is pursuing a degree in Architecture. Alex is an active member of the Kent State AIAS Chapter where he has previously held a leadership position. He is currently a third-year student.

AIA CLEVELAND DESIGN AWARDS COMMITTEE CHAIRS Beau Bock, AIA, LEED AP, Associate Principal | Demonica Kemper Architects

Beau is an Associate Principal with Demonica Kemper Architects where he is a Design Leader for the Chicago based firm. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Kent State University’s CAED where he has been teaching 1st Year Design Studio since 2017. Currently, he serves as the 1st year coordinator for the CAED Fall semester. A native Floridian, he graduated from the University of Florida and Georgia Tech with degrees in Design and Architecture. Beau enjoys being outdoors and has completed 19 marathons.

Aaron Hill, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Co-CEO | Bialosky

Aaron is a Principal and co-CEO with Bialosky, an AIA Ohio Gold Medal Firm. Throughout his twenty-five years of experience, Aaron has directed and designed a range of high-profile institutional projects, which have been recognized with thirteen State and Local AIA Design Awards. Aaron is a Past President of AIA Ohio and AIA Cleveland, and has served on the AIA Cleveland Design Awards committee for the past fifteen years.

Adam Yaracs, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Associate, Project Manager | IKM Architecture Adam is an Associate and Project Manager with IKM Architecture. He also serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at Kent State’s CAED where he teaches 4th Year Design Studio. His volunteer work with AIA Cleveland includes serving as the Co-Chair for the Cleveland Design Awards Program. Previously, he has served as AIA Cleveland Chapter President, Director of Communications, Director of Development and Director of Camaraderie. In 2022, he was named a Top Young Professional in the Midwest by ENR Magazine. In 2020, Adam was a recipient of the inaugural Emerging Professional Award from AIA Ohio and in 2019, he was honored with the AIA National Young Architect Award. He received his education from Kent State University.

Jonathan Lusin is a Principal at IKM with over 26 years of architectural expertise, specializing in higher education, healthcare, and workplace sectors. His experience encompasses a range of technically complex projects for clients such as Cleveland Clinic, Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, and Oberlin College. A graduate of the Leadership Pittsburgh, Inc. (LP31) community leadership program, Jon brings a strong focus to creating effective project teams which has been instrumental in both securing and delivering successful outcomes. Jon’s leadership extends beyond his professional work; he has actively contributed to the Northeast Ohio community through participation as Board Chair of AIA Cleveland for 2025.

AIA CLEVELAND DESIGN AWARDS COMMITTEE (CONT.) Gwendolyn Frank, AIA, Project Architect | Perspectus

Gwendolyn Frank, AIA, is an Architect at Perspectus and a Kent State University graduate with a portfolio showcasing a variety of project types with a range of clients. While on the AIA Boards, her mission is to be a voice for the early professionals through a range of initiatives and is currently serving as the AIA Ohio Licensing Advisor and AIA Cleveland Secretary. Her latest adventure has been returning to KSU as an adjunct to teach second year studio. Her experiences motivate her to continue building a framework for future generations. Beyond the architecture endeavors, she can be found on an adventure seeking out art, theater, history, and metro parks in Cleveland and beyond.

Melanie Lewis, AIA, Principal, Dir. of Retail Programming | Bowen+

Melanie is a Principal and Director of Retail Programming at Bowen where she specializes in commercial architecture. She is a graduate of Kent State University CAED and in addition to being a member of the Design Awards committee she was previously co-chair for AIA Cleveland’s Women in Architecture (WIA) committee. Beyond architecture, she shares her love of theater with her daughter and baseball with her son. Also ask her about her full kitchen remodel – by the time this goes to print it’ll be either almost done or will have almost killed her.

David Maniet, AIA, Owner | Maniet Architects

David Maniet is the owner of Maniet Architects, an architecture firm with the goal to create successful and enjoyable environments for our clients while also allowing for family focused work-life balance and opportunity to participate as a citizen architect. As an engaged member of the design community he has served on the City of Lakewood’s Architectural Board of Review, served on AIA Cleveland’s board, and currently works on various AIA Cleveland programming like the Business of Architecture education series as well as Design Awards. He is a past winner of AIA Cleveland Emerging Professional Award and enjoys supporting mentorship and collaboration within the profession.

Adam O’Brien, AIA, NCARB, Principal, Business Center Practice Leader | Stantec Adam is a Practice Leader at Stantec, known for his commitment to design excellence and for his passion for delivering environments tailored to align with client goals, vision and expectations. With over 20 years of experience in designing and managing health and institutional projects, he approaches each project with a unwavering focus on collaboration, quality and purpose. A dedicated mentor, Adam is often found engaging the design team, exploring latest design trends and speaking to the importance of Design and how it affects health environments. His core belief is great design is not just about aesthetics, it about creating spaces that serve, inspire and endure.

Megan is a Project Director at Perspectus Architecture. She is an integral member of the Perspectus team with experience in planning and design for a broad range of clients, including dialysis care facilities and clinical laboratories. As a WELL AP® Accredited Professional, she utilizes a people-focused approach, advancing health and wellness through design. Megan has served on the AIA Cleveland Board as YAAM Director, Co-Chair of Programming, and is the currently serving as President-Elect. She has also served as the Co-Chair of the Committee on the Environment. Within the office, Megan champions the onboarding of new staff members and led the Perspectus CANstruction team from 2016-2024.

Nick Slaughterbeck, AIA, Project Manager | Moody Nolan

Nick is a Project Manager at Moody Nolan with nearly 10 years of experience in architecture. Specializing in housing projects, he leads initiatives that positively impact diverse communities. With a passion for design that serves people, he’s worked at several top Cleveland architecture firms. A recent achievement includes playing a key role in the Cleveland Convention Center project, collaborating with the city and Siegel Shuster Society to honor Superman and his creators. Dedicated to continuous growth, Nick strives to work on impactful projects that blend design excellence with social good. When not working, Nick can be found around Lakewood walking and spending time with his dog Remy or his kitten Meows van der Rohe, participating in weekly trivia, sitting on the Lakewood Architecture Board of Review, or simply enjoying a good book on his porch.
