From the Principal Mrs Catherine O’Kane

I am delighted to introduce Teddy, the newest member of our All Hallows’ School community and our beloved wellbeing dog.

Teddy’s presence not only creates a friendly and interactive atmosphere but also brings joy to everyone he encounters. His positive impact on our community is undeniable, as seen in the smiles and joy he brings to our students and staff every day.

Student wellbeing is a core focus at our school, as we understand its profound impact on learning, personal achievement, social competence, and emotional resilience. Our holistic approach considers all aspects of student wellbeing — intellectual, social, physical, and emotional — helping our students thrive in an inclusive community.

Our wellbeing initiatives for our newest AHSisters, such as the Supporting Sisters and buddy programs, are designed to foster a strong sense of belonging among our new students as they are welcomed into our community.

Generously funded by the Mothers’ Network, Teddy has quickly become the most popular addition to our staff and a key part of our comprehensive wellbeing program.

Research increasingly highlights the benefits of wellbeing dogs in schools. Their presence has been shown to reduce stress, lower cortisol levels, and increase the release of oxytocin, which promotes positive feelings and helps students experiencing anxiety and stress by seeking assistance and developing positive social skills.

Teddy’s presence not only creates a friendly and interactive atmosphere but also brings joy to everyone he encounters.

Additionally, our House system promotes student wellbeing in an inclusive community and remains a defining feature of our AHSisters’ identity long after graduation.

Furthermore, our ongoing investment in facilities includes the redevelopment of St Gertrude’s open space, providing additional active play space and shaded seating for our youngest AHSisters.

These improvements will complement our current playground facilities, promoting physical activity and supporting our students’ health, wellbeing, and overall development.

In the coming months, we look forward to witnessing Teddy's positive impact on our students’ wellbeing.

His presence reminds us of the importance of creating a nurturing environment where every student feels valued and supported.

Once again the AHS community was wowed by past pupils who live and breathe the theme of International Women’s Day. This year, our host Aislin Kriukelis (2002) skilfully guided Eugenie Buckley (1988) and Jamie-Lee Lewis (2008) to share their stories and perspectives on #InspireInclusion at the 2024 Breakfast event. The discussion opened our minds to the potential of sport to drive social change, to empower women to lead and achieve and contribute to a just and inclusive world. A very big thank you to all who helped to make this such a success.

In March we welcomed back the graduates from the Class of 2023 on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It was a lovely afternoon of sharing pizza and catching up on all that has happened in the first few months out of school. Thank you to Team Dalton – Nicki, Lucy and Alice who put the afternoon together.

It is always lovely to see members of our past pupils’ community at school functions. This year at Open Day and May Morning Tea our stall was visited by many AHSisters from across the decades. We are most grateful for the support we get from merchandise sales which allows us to contribute to the school’s fundraising initiatives.

Giving Day proved to be a success for a third consecutive year and the Past Pupils’ Association was so happy to be a part of it by donating $5000 as a matched donor towards a bursary. This year we will once again be awarding $5000 to the recipient of the Dr Lee-Anne Perry AM Leadership and Service Award.

The successful applicant will be announced in August.

Remember that our Annual Mass, Morning Tea and Reunion Day is on 2nd November. This special gathering is open to all past pupils, especially those who are celebrating a milestone reunion. Add this date to your calendar and follow our socials for further details and ticket sales.

This year we have changed our Constitution and moved to an Annual General Meeting format. Please join us on 25th November as we recap 2024 and elect the new committee for 2025. Further information will be published closer to the date.

Since All Hallows’ began in 1861 it has been the School’s mission to inspire young women to be the best version of their academic, cultural, spiritual and physical selves.

All this has been supported by an exceptional range of facilities and high quality coaching.

It is no surprise, therefore, that All Hallows’ has produced many outstanding athletes over the years, indeed Olympic standard athletes.

Past Pupils in Paris

"It’s been a very, very long dream that I’ve had and a lot of hard work and blood, sweat and tears have gone into this"

Alice Williams, Class of 2015 Water Polo After debuting for The Stingers in 2017 while still a teenager, Alice has collected a lot of experience playing water polo at home and overseas.

A prolific scorer in the Australian Water Polo League, in 2023 she played in Italy’s professional water polo league, helping her club L’Ekipe Orizzonte to victory in a best-offive finals series against SIS Roma. Alice was the Italian League’s second highest goal scorer, with 45 goals for the season.

At her World Championships debut at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Japan, she was named in the Media All-Star Team.

Sharpshooter Alice was also among the leading 6

scorers at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, with a total of 17 goals.

In Paris, the women’s competition will feature a 10 team tournament to be held at the Paris Aquatic Centre and the Paris La Defense Arena.

Alice is studying biomedical science in the QUT Health faculty.

Caitlin Cronin, Class of 2012 Rowing, women’s quad scull Caitlin stroked the Australian women's quad scull at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 to a bronze medal. She will again represent Australia as stroke in the women's quad scull in Paris.

Caitlin has a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Chemical at UQ and is currently studying a Masters of Public Health parttime at UNSW, having deferred Medicine at University of Wollongong for the time being to focus on her rowing.

Her sporting hero is Cathy Freeman and she says the best thing about being an elite athlete is “being part of an amazing team and doing what you love every day”.

“Rowing is a sport that constantly challenges you physically, technically and mentally. I am driven by always searching for improvement, even if it's just by aiming to be 1% better each day. I love the team aspect of rowing, we spend hours working together towards a common goal and share in the ups and downs that come with that. Rowing has helped me develop a strong sense of self-discipline, resilience and determination that I will take with me to life outside of rowing”.

" The journey to Olympic selection has been one of redemption. After being the favourite as a 16 year old in the Tokyo trials, a nervous swim saw me miss selection by 0.14 sec. This experience has shaped me to be the swimmer that I am today. It fortified me and gave me the drive to work hard and not to leave any stone unturned to set myself up for selection for Paris. The road was not without its ups and downs but that is the path for most professional athletes”

Elizabeth ‘Lizzy’ Dekkers, Class of 2021 Swimming, 200m and 100m Butterfly A talented athlete across many sports as a youngster, Lizzy had good success at a National School Swimming level but continued to pursue other sports representing Queensland in water polo. At the age of 12, Lizzy started to swim the gruelling 200m Butterfly and throughout her Australian National Age Group career, she was never beaten in this event.

Lizzy chose to pursue swimming full time and at the age of 14 and was rewarded with selection as the youngest member on the Junior Australia Team.

Lizzy has moved successfully into the senior ranks primarily representing Australia at the 2022 World Championships and later that 8

year, went on to win a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games. She is thrilled to be representing Australia in Paris 2024 where the 200m Butterfly event will showcase some of the greatest competitors of all time.

Lizzy’s sporting idol is, not surprisingly, Susie O’Neill. She loves Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Malrat.

She is currently studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Hons) at UQ with an Applied Maths Major that she hopes will lead to a career in the financial sector.

She works and trains hard and is grateful for all the opportunities that swimming affords her – to visit extraordinary places and do amazing things.

Former AHS Olympian still part of the Olympic story Marguerite King (Houston) OLY, Class of 1998 Beijing 2008 Rowing – Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls (W2x) Marguerite is an Australian national champion, an Olympian and two-time World Champion. She contested state representative events (firstly for Queensland and later for South Australia) at nine successive Australian Rowing Championships.

She made her debut on the Australian Rowing Team in 2002 and was crowned world champion as part of the women’s lightweight quad scull.

Marguerite missed selection in the 2004 Athens squad and took two years to return to full fitness after contracting glandular fever.

In 2006 she partnered with Amber Halliday to win silver at the World Championships in the women’s lightweight scull, before going one better the next year and winning gold. Marguerite made her Olympic debut in 2008.

These days, Marguerite is engaged in elite sport in a different capacity. As lead physiotherapist for the Women’s Program at Water Polo Australia, she will play a critical role at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the team includes fellow AHSister, Alice Williams.

In 2017 the World Olympians Association (WOA) unveiled its landmark OLY post-nominal letters initiative designed to provide Olympians with the professional recognition they deserve, much like a doctor, lawyer or university professor.

Serving as a symbolic recognition of an Olympian’s status in society, the OLY lettering could for example promote an Olympian’s social, charitable, and community-based

work, acting as a reminder of their achievements and of their responsibility to embody the Olympic values in everyday life.

Any athlete who has competed in a Summer or Winter Olympic Games and who continues to uphold the values and practices enshrined in the Olympic Charter and the WOA Code of Conduct, may use the OLY lettering on any official documentation.

the story of us The School Archives is a place of memories, achievements and milestones that have been a proud part of the All Hallows’ School identity, with the contributions of past pupils significantly enriching our collection.

In 2024 the school archives completed a project which produced short films on the history and heritage of our school.

This series consists of five films covering Heritage, Faith, Academic, Sports and Culture with many past pupils generously giving their time to participate in these films, which will now be used in teaching and community activities.

Come Back, We Miss You! T H E G R A D PA R T Y – 2 4 T H M A R C H 2 0 2 4

The weather was drizzly and gloomy but spirits were bright when the Class of 2023 came back to the school for their annual post-Year 12 gathering hosted by the Past Pupils’ Association.

Sadly, a sunny afternoon to be on the Terrace was not to be, but Loretto Hall provided a welcome space, ideal for woodfired pizza straight from the oven, for games, and chatting and just chilling out together.

This event proved to be great for a catch up and to reconnect with classmates, especially after the restrictions of Covid. However, moving forward, and thanks to the input of Class of 2023ers and other recent graduates, the Past Pupils’ Association may take it in a new and different direction in 2025. Stay tuned for further updates.

A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR SISTERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT!

On Tuesday April 30, the All Hallows’ Past Pupils’ Association held the third in its popular series of ‘Sisters in...’ career, networking and mentoring events.

Sisters in the Spotlight showcased an extraordinary group of past pupils who work in the performing arts industry as actors, performers, writers, designers, producers, directors, administrators and arts advocates.

The discussion panel featured Sophie Banister (Class of 2012), Priscilla Jackman (Class of 1995), Ada Lukin (Class of 2020), Sophie Perkins (Class of 2012), and Genevieve Trace (Class of 2003) who shared their stories and insights into finding and following one’s passion; being curious, collaborative and courageous; developing resilience and dealing with disappointments; embracing challenges, accumulating transferable skills and making the most of every opportunity. They were individually and collectively inspiring, entertaining and encouraging.

The panel was moderated by Katrina Riveros (Class of 1993), Head of Drama at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, who deftly led the discussion with both the expertise of an experienced educator and as a great believer in the importance of the arts now more than ever, which resonated perfectly with our audience of current students, past pupils and parents.

Class of 1964 60 YEAR REUNION

We could have been called the Golden Girls as we celebrated 60 years since completing Year 12 in 1964 at All Hallows School.

former teacher Sister M Benedict (Catharine Courtney). We discovered how young she really was when she taught at AHS!

We gathered on June 1st for a luncheon held at the Tattersalls Club in Brisbane.

Some had come from interstate and one gallant member had timed her visit from the UK to be present at the reunion. A few of our friends from 1962 Junior also joined in to celebrate.

We listened to the messages from those unable to attend and recalled the names of our friends who have died. A special thanks to Margaret Mary Hayes and Eugenie Garske who organised the event and gave us all a chance to remember and enjoy each other’s company once again.

It was wonderful to remember school friends and catch up on the comings and goings of the past years as well as enjoying the memorabilia of old school photos and magazines. Our special guest was our

Staff Officer Capability Management, Royal Australian Air Force

Katrina completed a Bachelor of Science at The University of Queensland (UQ), with majors in Biochemistry and Pharmacology. She then worked for 3 years as a research assistant at UQ, before commencing Medical School there and subsequently joining the RAAF as a second year medical student.

After internship and residency at the Gold Coast Hospital, Katrina completed officer training at Point Cook, where she was awarded the Leadership and Military Qualities Award.

Katrina has been deployed 3 times to the Middle East; Operation Catalyst in 2006, Operation Slipper, Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2008, and Operation Highroad, Kabul, Afghanistan in 2019/20. She has also completed postings in RAAF Base Richmond, RAAF base Amberley, and RAAF Base Edinburgh.

She was awarded a Fellowship of the College of Australasian College of General Practitioners in 2019. Her other academic qualifications include Masters of Public Health, Diploma of Child Health, Graduate Certificate of Sports Medicine and Bachelor of Science.

Orthopaedic Surgeon Hand, Wrist and Microsurgery

Emergency Physician

After obtaining dual Bachelor's degrees in Commerce and Biomedical Science from UQ in 2004, Libby went on to complete her Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery in 2008, and then in 2012 was accepted into the Orthopaedic training program. In 2017, Libby spent 6 months at Princess Alexandra Hospital as the Hand Fellow and a further 12 months of subspecialty Hand, Wrist & Microsurgical training at the Regional Hand Centre, Middlemore Hospital, Auckland as part of the Plastics, Reconstruction & Hand Surgery Unit.

Libby currently works in private practice and as a consultant upper limb orthopaedic surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

She regularly presents at conferences, prepares papers for journal submission and is active in projects as a member of the Brisbane Hand and Upper Limb Research Institute. She is involved in teaching medical students and junior doctors and finds mentoring the next generation of surgeons to be particularly rewarding.

Eighteen years ago, she transitioned to medicine and has since practiced in a variety of settings, including metropolitan, regional, and remote areas, treating both adults and children. Kathleen is passionate about helping fellow doctors understand the intersection of law and medicine, and she enjoys clinical teaching and mentoring of junior doctors.

Bronte's professional journey reflects a strong commitment to both radiology and continuous learning. After graduating from All Hallows’, Bronte pursued a Bachelor of Medical Imaging Sciences at Queensland University of Technology, where she was awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Sports Scholarship.

Her initial professional experience as a Radiographer inspired Bronte to undertake a postgraduate medical degree at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. During this time, Bronte balanced her medical studies with part-time work as a Radiographer at St Andrews’ War Memorial Hospital and The Wesley Hospital, demonstrating her dedication and determination to manage multiple responsibilities.

Currently, Bronte is a Phase 1 trainee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, with her main training hub at Princess Alexandra Hospital. She continues to expand her expertise by pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare in Remote and Extreme Environments, highlighting her interest in diverse and challenging medical environments.

Madeleine credits her love for learning and dedication to academic excellence to her All Hallows’ education. Her dream was always to pursue a career in medicine. To that end, she dedicated herself to her studies, participating in Mercy Action, volunteering at local healthcare facilities, and shadowing medical professionals to gain firsthand experience.

Despite all this, she withstood some disappointments before finally being accepted into Medicine at Bond University.

Currently in her third year of Medicine, Madeleine is deeply passionate about leveraging her role as a future doctor to raise awareness on crucial health issues and to empower individuals to take charge of their well-being. She is committed to not only providing exceptional medical care but also addressing systemic issues to ensure equitable access to healthcare, particularly for underserved communities and those who need it most, by advocating for preventive care and fostering health-conscious communities.

Dr Maria Boulton is an industry leader, GP specialist, business owner, sought after media commentator and public speaker. With two decades’ experience working in private practice and hospitals in Brisbane and regional Queensland, and as outgoing President of AMA Queensland, she has played an important role in shaping state and national medical policy.

Maria’s experiences growing up in El Salvador underpin her reputation as a compassionate advocate for doctors and patients alike. Immigrating to Australia in 1990, she completed her medical degree at The University of Queensland in 2002. Maria is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and a graduate and member of Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Passionate about preventive medicine, continuity of care and ongoing education, Maria says that managing her own practice, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic, “increased my awareness of the challenges faced by my GP and non-GP specialist colleagues, motivating me to become involved in creating positive change [to provide] quality, evidence-based healthcare in the face of dwindling funding and inadequate MBS rebates.”

We are very much looking forward to welcoming back our milestone year groups (e.g. Class of 1944, 1954, 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, 2004, 2014) on November 2.

However Reunion Day is open to AHSisters from any year and all are welcome to join us for this one day of the year when the campus is open to the entire past pupil community.

The day begins with the Annual Past Pupils’ Mass in the iconic All Hallows’ Chapel at 9:30am when we celebrate those members of our past pupil community who are with us, as well as commemorate those who are no longer with us.

Members of milestone reunion groups are invited to participate in this Mass in various roles.

A fabulous Morning Tea follows at 11:00am (venue to be decided). This is a paid event so bookings are essential – unfortunately we cannot cater for walk-ins on the day.

Both the Mass and Morning Tea events are optional – you may attend one or both.

Some milestone groups choose to make the Morning Tea their reunion event, others choose to go off-site to a private lunch or gathering.

Between the Mass and Morning Tea an official photographer will be provided.

Class, friendship and family groups will all be offered the opportunity to have professional photographs taken. These will be provided free of charge after the day – a link will be shared with all registered attendees and shared on PPA socials and in the December edition of The Hallowian.

To ensure that the All Hallows’ Past Pupils’ Association continues to be relevant, responsive and pro-active we encourage past pupils of all ages and life stages to get involved. Your input and feedback is always welcome. Plus there are many ways you can lend a hand to whatever level of commitment you can.

The Association celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025 and it is a great time to look back with pride and to look ahead with new plans and perspectives for the next 100 years!

We are currently looking for new members for the General Committee, especially those with skills in finance and social media.

NEW CHAPEL FLOWERS celebrate a past pupil tradition Being married in the All Hallows’ Chapel is a special privilege afforded to AHS past pupils and those with special connections to the Sisters of Mercy.

As a token of gratitude for this honour and to acknowledge the recent handover of the Convent and Chapel to the School, the Past Pupils’ Association has gifted these beautiful new floral arrangements for the altar and entrance of the Chapel.

ERIN ROCHE: making a life and a living on a road less travelled // CLASS OF 2015

Erin Roche is in the enviable position of pursuing her passions – travel, photography and media – while building a brand and a business that takes her to some of the most amazing places in the world.

Her story is one of embracing creative thinking and embarking on non-traditional pathways.

SISTER STORIES

After studying a Bachelor of International Hotel & Tourism Management, Erin booked a one-way flight to Europe, got a UK Working Holiday Visa, purchased her first camera and hasn’t looked back.

She took an 8 week Photography & Social Media course and attended an intensive 10 day photography bootcamp in Bali which upscaled her skillset and produced a portfolio that enabled her, and partner Jackson Rule, to gain work photographing hotels, resorts, brands, tourism etc and offer photography, videography and social media management services via their platform The Way To Wherever.

Along the way, Erin, Jackson and friend and poet Amelia Michels travelled tens of thousands of kilometres to the most diverse, colourful, confronting and spiritual nations on earth to produce what would become ultimately an award-winning film.

As Erin describes it “Over two exhilarating months, we discover the lessons in humanity that surround us on the crowded streets of Delhi, the eternal funeral pyres of Varanasi and the starlit skies deep in the Thar Desert”.

The result was a visual and sensory extravaganza called India Unveiled: A Tapestry of Life and Death which was awarded 3rd place out of a field of almost 200 creative entries by Be Still Media Foundation, an organisation that seeks to incentivise creators of media and arts to explore their craft and achieve excellence.

Looking forward, Erin and Jackson continue to focus on their travel photography and videography via their platform The Way to Wherever and creative agency Lens+Lumen.

talks about press magazine “Press Magazine is dedicated to social justice journalism, integrated with photography, art, and creative writing.

Our central goal is to tell meaningful stories that are often missed in mainstream news headlines in an engaging way - by combining journalism with the arts.

A few of the stories we featured in our first edition include a discussion on the complexities of advocacy when dealing with assault, specifically in the film industry; debunking stereotypes about autism, and how art can be an important outlet for people with autism; and how curiosity led Clare Parsons to uncover inefficiencies within the United Nations in Timor Leste.

Alongside our love of print media, we also acknowledge the benefit of social media in democratising access to news, so we aim to be active on Instagram. The focus of our Instagram is the 'What Have You Missed' series, where university researchers break down important topics in an easily digestible way. So far, we have covered the war in Sudan and the Israel/ Palestine conflict. We will also be launching an ‘Open Court’ series in future editions, where law students will break down topical cases in the courts.

Creating the first edition of Press has been such a rewarding and challenging experience, and it would not have happened without the support provided by the Dr Lee-Anne Perry AM Leadership and Service award. I am immensely grateful for the encouragement from Dr. Perry and All Hallows School'."

‘CHANTEFIQUE’:

A trio of AHSisters raise their voices in France

Three AHSisters, Robyn Bauer, Class of 1975, Michele Endicott (Gomm), Class of 1970, and Mary-Ann Miller (Marshall), Class of 1973, members of Chantefique, recently returned from an emotionally charged journey to Somme, France.

Chantefique, Brisbane’s sole French-singing choir, embraces members of all ages with diverse levels of proficiency in French. Bound by a shared passion for music and a deep appreciation for French culture, the choir sings at numerous events across Brisbane annually. These include prominent occasions like the French Film Festival, the largest of its kind outside of France, as well as Bastille Day celebrations, the annual Beaujolais Nouveau event, and Alliance Française Christmas festivities, among others.

On November 11, 2022, Chantefique performed at Anzac Park, Toowong, for a poignant ceremony dedicating the RAE Bailey Bridge of Friendship between Australia and France—a permanent tribute to every Australian Army Engineer unit from World War I onward. The event, meticulously coordinated by Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) George Hulse OAM, was a resounding success. In the aftermath of this special ceremony, the choir received an invitation from the Mayor of Amiens to perform at the dedication of the twin Bailey Bridge of Friendship in Le Jardin des Plantes, Amiens, scheduled for April 24, 2024. This invitation was embraced eagerly by Chantefique members, many of whom had personal connections through their grandfathers and great-uncles who fought in the Somme during World War I, imbuing the event with profound emotional significance.

The Chantefique choir set off to France, personally funding their journey from Australia, bolstered by the proceeds from fundraising efforts, and supplemented through support from the French Consulate, Brisbane and Alliance Française de Brisbane.

Chantefique joined voices with a local Amien choir to perform at the Bailey Bridge of Friendship dedication ceremony on April 24.

On April 26, Michele Endicott (Gomm), granddaughter of a World War I Sapper, orchestrated a performance for Chantefique at La Cathédrale Notre-Dame d’Amiens, renowned as the largest cathedral in France—twice the size of Notre-Dame in Paris! The choir delighted in the cathedral's magnificent acoustics, singing amidst the central labyrinth, beneath its grand dome. It was a transcendent experience, lifting their voices to new celestial heights.

Bretonneux, local French attendees savored a formal concert featuring Chantefique's hourlong repertoire. This included French and English wartime songs, traditional Australian melodies, and beloved French classics. The evening culminated in a momentous standing ovation, marking the unforgettable pinnacle of Chantefique's journey in France.

Michele Endicott (Gomm) reflects on this triumphant experience and attributes the success to the strong foundations that were instilled during her French studies at All Hallows’, allowing Michele to develop exceptional French pronunciation. ability to sing. She finally tracked down ‘Little Gomm’ and asked why I wasn't in the Choir like my three older sisters. I told her I couldn't sing, but she insisted that I follow her to a piano in the corner of the Concert Hall to sing a scale while she played it. At the end, she said: "Hmmm, have you thought of joining the Orchestra, Dear?"

Mary-Ann Miller (Marshall) developed a passion for French while studying at All Hallows' from Year 8 to Year 10. Although she paused her French studies in Grade 11 and 12 to focus on Maths 2, her interest in the language persisted. Years later, upon returning from abroad, Mary-Ann pursued an Arts degree majoring in French Language and Culture. She retained a fervent interest in all things French at IML, Alliance Française, TAFE, the France-Australia Chamber of Commerce, and private speaking groups before eventually joining Chantefique.

Mary-Ann recalls: “Singing Angeli [for me] was not restricted to the chapel. While working in London in the early 80’s, a nursing mate and I did a cycling trip through parts of France. Along stretches of open road, be it bitumen or cobble stones, I would belt out the Angeli in full voice, I guess to express the joy of that experience or maybe to suppress the pain of landing on that bicycle saddle day after day!”

While Mary-Ann wasn't a member of the All Hallows' choir, she fondly remembers singing the Angeli with the entire school in

DR STACEY PIZZINO counting the real costs of the casualties of war As a former paramedic, Stacey Pizzino (Brennan) has witnessed disasters, mass casualties and vulnerable communities, but it is not these memories that have etched the deepest imprints on her life. Rather, it is the devastation caused by armed conflicts and the humanitarian complexities that follow war.

Dr Pizzino recently completed her PhD with the UQ School of Public Health, where she collated and analysed the world’s largest study of casualties caused by landmines and other explosive remnants of war.

She also examined the cause of mortality and injury among this group. Dr Pizzino explored data from more than 100,000 casualties in 17 countries, including Afghanistan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Angola and Ukraine.

One of the key findings from her research shows that around 4 in 10 people injured by weapons die from their injuries.

“Explosive devices, like landmines, grenades, missiles and mortar shells, are always left on the ground after war, and they entrench communities in poverty,” Dr Pizzino explains.

“They cause horrific injuries to survivors, place financial burdens on families and reduce access to agricultural land, which leads to food insecurity and limits livelihood.

“Weapons can also remain live in the environment long after war is over, which puts children born in the future at risk of dying from explosives dropped during conflict today.”

Sadly, the number of armed conflicts occurring in populated areas around the world is growing, which prevents reconstruction efforts and displaced communities from returning home.

“My research helps to strengthen the evidence on this and shows that explosive weapons continue to harm innocent communities long after the fighting stops,” Dr Pizzino explains.

“We need to increase global understanding of the reverberating effects of conflict and disasters, and how they affect the health of impacted communities.

“I also want my research to improve global disaster responses. For example, climate change poses a real threat to communities with contamination.

Extreme weather events, like floods and landslides, can transport hazards from previously cleared land and recontaminate areas.”

In June this year, Dr Pizzino travelled to the United Nations (UN) to share her research and highlight the plight of devastated communities.

In the early 2000s, Dr Pizzino backpacked through Laos and Cambodia for months.

“I was 18 years old, and it was the first time I had seen minefields and communities battling with post-war contamination,” Dr Pizzino recalls.

“The experience motivated me to study a Master of International Public Health at UQ when I returned to Australia.

“I chaired a UN session on the rights of war survivors,” Dr Pizzino reveals.

“This degree brought me back to Laos to do fieldwork, and helped me connect my understanding of injuries, gained from working as a paramedic, with war-ravaged countries.

“I explained that survivors of war often experience catastrophic injuries that leave them with lifelong disabilities, and that countries must provide rehabilitation across their lifespan, especially for children.

“It also helped me identify a knowledge gap in the epidemiology of injury from explosive weapons for my PhD work,” she reveals.“My research has reaffirmed to me the inequities within our world and the need for sustainable solutions to progress humanity.

“Through research evidence we can catalyse solutions to complex, global health issues.

“This is why I am passionate about developing the evidence base for policy response, program planning and advocacy for communities affected by disasters and humanitarian crises.

“And, via impactful settings, like the UN, countries can work together to improve the daily lives of war survivors.

“A culmination of life experiences has left a lasting impression on me and brought me right where I am today.”

“Without these efforts, history only repeats itself.”

DR AMELIA JARDIM (GRANGER): // CLASS OF 2001

"I think it's really important to be visible and show other young girls out there that you can be a surgeon, have a family, have a good life" We continue to be inspired and amazed by the work of neurosurgeon Amelia Jardim whose skill and intellect are matched only by her compassion and empathy.

Amelia is among just 17 percent of Australian neurosurgeons who are women. She juggles three children aged between one and 5 with a demanding role as a brain surgeon working across the

Queensland Children’s and Mater Health hospitals in Brisbane.

Recently Amelia led a team of neurosurgeons who operated on teenager Harlow Perry-Kuhn to remove a tangle of blood vessels, known medically as an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) using a world first three-dimensional robotic microscope. Harlow was at risk of never walking or talking again, but

under the expert care of Dr Jardim she was back at school just 3 weeks after she collapsed unexpectedly with a brain bleed at a swimming carnival on the Gold Coast.

In an interview with ABC News, Harlow spoke of her admiration for ‘Dr Amelia’ who was able to balance all the complexities of brain surgery with Harlow’s needs as a young woman, such as taking particular care when shaving Harlow’s hair before her procedure. Not surprisingly, Amelia has become something of an inspiration for Harlow who describes her as ‘phenomenal’ and is quick to acknowledge the importance of both being and having great female role models.

An update on the journey of AHSister Maddie Andersen, who recently volunteered for Mercy Ships aboard the Global Mercy, in Sierra Leone. The All Hallows’ Past Pupils’ Association was proud to provide some financial support to Maddie to help her achieve this amazing act of volunteerism.

Mercy Ships deploys the world’s two largest nongovernmental hospital ships, the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy, to provide free surgical interventions and essential healthcare services to underserved populations worldwide. As an international faith-based organization, Mercy Ships has been collaborating closely for over 40 years with in-country partners to enhance medical infrastructure and train local healthcare professionals, ensuring safe, sustainable and lasting healthcare solutions for communities who would otherwise go without.

Each year, more than 3,000 volunteers from over 60 countries, including surgeons, nurses, dentists, cooks, and engineers, dedicate their time and skills on-board the Mercy Ships working towards the collective mission

of bringing hope and healing to all.

As a radiographer, Maddie’s job is to provide care to patients in need, but she felt the need to do more, to help the marginalized and underserved around the world. Maddie volunteered to perform diagnostic imaging on the Global Mercy, using imaging guidance to assist surgeons in theatre, identify pathology and educate local health care professionals on imaging practices. She recounts this truly life-changing experience in her own stirring words: “Months have passed since my transformative journey in West Africa, and I wish to convey to you all the depth of this experience in writing, especially to those who supported my journey.

Saying goodbye to my parents at the Brisbane Airport, I felt my own sense of excitement welling up inside me.

The feeling was consuming, the sense of pride I felt, being on my way to fulfill a dream I’ve held since I was a child.

SISTER STORIES After almost forty hours, I arrived. Standing beneath her, marvelling at both her size and what she stands for, I took in the Global Mercy (GLM) – my home for the months to come.

The beginning of my journey aboard GLM was far from typical. Instead of the usual hospital hustle, the ship buzzed with New Year's festivities as we welcomed 2024. The sense of community was palpable as we joined on the deck, singing and dancing under the stars.

"My understanding of biomechanics was challenged as I saw kids walking with legs shaped like "Z" and "X". This was a precursor to the severely advanced pathologies we would encounter. It was my responsibility to obtain "standard" imaging for all of them."

Soon, the ship echoed with the footsteps of our first patients, children with malnutrition-induced limb deformities. My understanding of biomechanics was challenged as I saw kids walking with legs shaped like "Z" and "X". This was a precursor to the severely advanced pathologies we would encounter—goitres constricting airways, intraoral tumours the size of oranges, and overgrown facial bones causing "lion's face" disfigurement. It was my responsibility to obtain "standard" imaging for all of them.

Working in the imaging department, we supported patients and staff 24/7 with a range of services similar to Australian hospitals. However, without radiologists, radiographers often had to review imaging and make clinical decisions. When patients sought care elsewhere, we provided printed copies of their images, as we couldn’t assume their doctors had CD or DVD players. This highlighted the disparity in access to medical technology between Sierra Leone and Australia.

Unfortunately, for many patients the process of pre-operative imaging was traumatic -many patients cried. In these moments I had to remain empathetic to how overwhelming this journey is for patients and their families. In these early days, it was hard to

feel the positive difference I was making in their lives, opposed to feeling like I was giving everyone PTSD. Navigating cultural differences added another layer of complexity. I had to be vigilant about fertility symbols worn under patients' clothing that could appear on imaging, and careful when it came to entertainment and sticker selection—like avoiding "The Little Mermaid," as mermaids were seen as symbols of the devil. Yet, amidst these challenges, the gratitude of patients' families and local day-crew members resonated deeply. Their communal identity, where helping one meant helping all, stood in contrast to Western individualism.

at the end of each day, I would feel so full of purpose and love. I cannot express how much these moments nourished my soul.

Spending time immersed in Sierra Leonean culture enriched my understanding of the human condition beyond measure. It challenged my preconceptions and opened my heart to new perspectives. Whilst onboard, I was afforded many opportunities to learn new skills and be part of life changing activities. With community engagement programs on constant offer and support to start your own activity, it was very easy to get involved in the community beyond the ship. In my first week aboard, I was able to help build a school in the George Brooke Community. Every Wednesday evening you could hear the out-of-tune sounds of me participating in group ukelele lessons. With the help of another fellow Aussie, I co-founded the “No Mercy Ships” Cricket Team and made my own international cricketing debut as vice-captain against the Sierra

Patients remained onboard within the wards in the weeks following their surgery. This allowed them to access the rehabilitation and medical attention they needed – physio, counselling, pathology, etc. There were four main wards (A-D) within the hospital, each designated a particular surgical program and, further, an intensive care unit and a low care unit to facilitate care for patients with different needs. Each evening, we were encouraged to visit the patients within the hospital. For me, this simple ritual had the biggest impact on my time aboard. Visiting patients was not about prying into their lives and playing “counsellor” to their hardships. It was about enriching their experience onboard. Whether this was through playing jenga, teaching the children to make pipe-cleaner animals, or having dance-offs with the adults - leaving the wards

Reflecting on my journey, I carry forward lessons of resilience, humility, and the transformative power of empathy. I learnt the importance of being unassuming and leaving your heart open to the kindness strangers can offer you. Sierra Leone and its people have left an indelible mark on my soul, inspiring me to embrace a more compassionate and inclusive worldview.”

STORY TIME with Miss Bond Congratulations to Annabelle Bond, Class of 2015, on her selection as a story time presenter on ABC Education.

Annabelle teaches Year 1 at West End State School, a vibrant and diverse community of 1500 students from Prep to Year 6 in Brisbane’s inner south.

Daughter of a school principal and fourth generation All Hallows’ girl, Annabelle has always wanted to teach and is passionate about early learning.

“My time at All Hallows’ School was pivotal in shaping both my personal growth and career. The nurturing environment and dedicated educators at All Hallows’ instilled in me a deep appreciation for the power of education and the importance of creative expression. A BOOK CLUB

In Term 2, the group read ‘Outlaw Girls’ by Emily Gale and Nova Weetman.

Past pupil Margaret Morton, nee Lynch, Class of 1966, came along with her granddaughter Molly Wade, Year 6. Margaret thoroughly enjoyed the experience and highly recommends it to other past pupil grandparents, aunts, parents and significant others.

Cathy Clem, School Archivist at All Hallows’ and I had the privilege of spending the morning with Pauline Burnett (Long) the day before she celebrated her 100th birthday on January 26, 2024.

We did not know at the time just how special that morning was, as Pauline passed away just a couple of weeks later. She was delightful company that day, happily sharing snippets of her life. Her memory was sharp, as was her sense of humour.

We are now so grateful that Pauline allowed us to film parts of our visit and invite you to watch the highlights of our conversation in the video on the following spread. In the meantime, this is my version of Pauline’s story…

Pauline’s family lived in Hastings Street, New Farm. She attended All Hallows’ School from January 1930 to 1939. (Pauline describes an unfortunate incident on her first day at AHS in the video below). Her only, elder sister Mary was four years ahead of her. Mr Long worked at the brewery across Kemp Place in Martin Street and Pauline remembers going there after school to help him ‘check the froth’ on the beer.

Pauline (and Mary) made several appearances in the School Magazines during the 1930’s, in photographs, articles and Pauline’s poem ‘Spring’ was published in the 1934 edition.

Some of these are reproduced here.

Pauline Bridget Long was born on January 26, 1924. Pauline was actually baptised Pauline Elfrieda Long but apparently, she did not much like Elfrieda, which her father John had chosen, and at some stage decided to change it to Bridget!

Pauline was so proud of and grateful for the lifelong friendships she made at All Hallows’, in particular Eula Jackson, who married an American and moved to the States after the war.

Pauline still giggled about jitterbugging with her girlfriends in Queen Street to celebrate the end of World War II. Distance never dulled their connection, and Eula and Pauline visited each other many times over the years.

Pauline’s other lifelong school friend was Bernice Aboud, nee Malouf. Before becoming a hairdresser (following in

the footsteps of her sister Mary) Pauline worked for the Malouf family in their clothing and fashion businesses. She and Bernice, who moved to Sydney after she married, spoke every week on the telephone until Bernice passed away at 99 years of age, two years ago.

Pauline and her husband Tony Burnett were not blessed with children of their own. Instead they became the most devoted aunt and uncle to their six nieces and nephews who were orphaned while still quite young. Pauline’s niece, Janice Henderson, recounts that ‘Everything was more fun when they

were there’ and that she and her siblings ‘were very proud of them and felt special that we had a part in their lives’.

After Tony’s death in 1989, Pauline continued to embrace community life. Her friend Peggy Skehan recalls Pauline had an amazing capacity to Archivist Cathy Clem and Pauline going through old photo albums.

connect with people ‘with love, interest and genuine care’. The Laidlaw Parade, St Joseph’s Kangaroo Point and St Benedict’s East Brisbane communities benefited from Pauline’s devotion to fun, friendship and faith – there were picnics, parties, progressive dinners, fetes, school functions, choir, Parish Council, Legion of Mary, St Vincent de Paul and Care and Concern.

Pauline passed away at Marycrest, Kangaroo Point on February 9, 2024. May she rest in peace.

ZITA DENHOLM (WHITE) “…still methinks faint echoes sound Of those that trod that hallowed ground”* // CLASS OF 1950

Thérèse Mary Zita White (always known as Zita) was born May 29, 1933, the eldest of nine children, Carmel, Michael, Bernard and Alan (all deceased), Ken, Anne, Leo and John.

As such, she took her responsibility to be a ‘good example’ seriously.

Despite living outside Queensland for much of her life, Zita was the epitome of an All Hallows’ girl. Her echo and tred still abound on this hallowed ground in the many treasures she donated to the School Archives; in her stories about boarding, etiquette and school life that she contributed to School Magazines and editions of The Hallowian; in her published memoir Over the Top which includes many All Hallows’ anecdotes; in her legacy of introducing lifesaving training to the school; and in her keen interest in anything All Hallows’. The Covid pandemic cruelly denied Zita the opportunity to celebrate her 70th reunion in 2020 – but she continued to stay in touch and interested in any way she could.

In the eulogy delivered by Zita’s sister Anne White at her funeral earlier this year, Anne began by referencing the All Hallows’ motto, Dieu et Devoir…God and Duty. She said ‘Zita aspired to this all her life’.

She certainly packed much of both into her 90 years and experienced a vast and rewarding professional, academic and community life from school teacher, author, Managing Editor of Jacaranda Press, publisher, Masters graduate, musician, orchestra and choir conductor, to equestrian competitor, organiser of equestrian events, clubs and school programs, and lover of the Connemara pony breed.

Age really was just a number for Zita. In her 80’s, she started riding again and bought a pony mare – Jazz – and they competed in dressage at local official events.

"She was highly intelligent, intellectually rigorous, extremely witty, passionate about history, literature and horses, a loyal friend, a woman of strong faith, and she loved her husband and family with all her heart."

On her 90th birthday, she rode her beloved Connemara stallion Gneevebrack Storm and posted a photo of her ride on the Aging Horse Women International Facebook page. She bragged with delight that it got more than 2500 ‘likes’ and ‘loves’ and almost 500 comments!

She was highly intelligent, intellectually rigorous, extremely witty, passionate about history, literature and horses, a loyal friend, a woman of strong faith, and she loved her husband and family with all her heart.

Zita passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, surrounded by family. She leaves behind Andrew, Ursula, Leah and Emily and Madeline and Aaron, Imogen and Harry. *Memories of All Hallows’ by Frances Shattock.

SISTER MARY JEANNE SHOECRAFT RSM A shining example of service and compassion // CLASS OF 1938

All Hallows’ doesn’t keep statistics on the longevity of its alumni, but when Sr M Jeanne Shoecraft RSM died on 31 December 2023, aged 105 years 4 months and 28 days, she surely numbered among our oldest ever past pupils. She was certainly the oldest ever member of the Brisbane Sisters of Mercy.

Jean Shoecraft and her twin sister Julie were born on 3 August 1918, a few months before the end of World War I. They were part of a large family of six girls and

four boys born to Peter and Mary Shoecraft who had a farm near Jondaryan, west of Toowoomba.

After finishing their primary years at the small Prairie State School near their home, they went to live with an aunt at Kangaroo Point and attended All Hallows’ as day scholars. Here they passed the Junior exam in 1936 and then did an extra year of commercial studies.

Jean joined the Sisters of Mercy in February 1938, followed a couple of months later by her twin sister.

They took the religious names Sr M Jeanne and Sr M Eudes, after their joint patron, French priest St John Eudes. Both became primary school teachers and carried out this ministry in many Mercy schools in southern Queensland. Although they were not identical twins, they were very hard to tell apart. This must have caused confusion in the Darra school at the beginning of 1962, when SM Jeanne was replaced as the Year Two teacher there by her twin sister.

SM Eudes died in 2013, predeceasing her sister by ten years.

After many years teaching large classes, Sr M Jeanne ‘semi-retired’ to Toowoomba where she first worked with small groups of students requiring extra help and then became the school library assistant. She retired to the Mater Convent in 2000 before moving to Emmaus Aged Care in 2007. This was to be her home for the next sixteen years. Here she continued to take a lively interest in the world around her. Right to the end, she insisted on taking her meals in the dining room where she enjoyed the company, even if she was no longer able to take part in much of the conversation. She is remembered as a very kind person, gentle in speech and ladylike in manner. May she rest in peace.

The Magnolia is believed to be one of the first flowering plants which evolved on Earth over 100 million years ago. As such it symbolises endurance, longevity, and perseverance. The All Hallows’ Magnolia Society is more than a bequest program; it's a commitment to nurturing the future of our beloved community.

Just like the enduring magnolia tree, the Magnolia Society will provide shade and support for generations to come. Leaving a gift in your Will is a promise for the future, a lasting tribute, supporting our school programs, our campus, and our students. IMAGINING PROFOUND IMPACT: an update from the All Hallows’ Foundation

In June we asked our community to imagine if two hundred years ago, Catherine McAuley decided to use her inheritance solely for her own personal comfort; to imagine a reality where her pioneering spirit and generosity never existed, where the Sisters of Mercy never emerged to touch the lives of countless women and children.

Where would we be?

We invited our community to reflect on the profound impact of our choices, actions, and generosity and to imagine the difference you could make for someone else.

You did that. In spades. The ripple effect we created has empowered All Hallows’ to make a monumental difference for someone else.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child; similarly, it takes a community to educate one.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Giving Day this year. Your commitment to making a

difference has paved the way for lasting impact that will touch the lives of many people you may never meet, showcasing the extraordinary power of collective generosity.
