Welcome

In 1861 the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Brisbane to a scene of tents and scattered buildings. They soon established the first secondary school for girls in Queensland. From this historical moment, during our school’s 160 year journey to 2021, students have been educated to embrace their futures confidently and to live lives of faith, compassion, learning and leadership. These skills have been put to the test in another roller coaster year for all.

We were fortunate to host our International Women’s’ Day Breakfast and Welcome Back event for last year’s Graduates early in 2021. Due to the overwhelming positive feedback and success of these functions, they will both return in 2022 and go on to be annual events for the PPA. Our fingers are crossed for a successful launch of “Connect Blue” on 4th June 2022. We will also be conducting a ”Sisters in Law” Career networking event that will hopefully inform and open doors for our students. Most of all we really hope to return to an in person Reunion Day and Annual Mass and Morning Tea. A very big thank you to Bridget Delahunty and Libby Brown for setting our events up for next year.

Whilst we haven’t been able to meet in person, we have been so lucky to stay connected with you online and I’d like to thank the School’s Communications team along with committee members Maree Nugent, Gabrielle Goulding and Catherine Bonifant for the outstanding efforts to keep us all in the loop.

Thank you to Felicity Frances and Sarah Fraser who have done marvellous jobs as Secretary and Treasurer and to Gabrielle Goulding for her commitment to the role of Vice President. We are also grateful to Maree Nugent who as School Liaison always shares our vision and purpose and helps us to get things done.

This year we farewelled long serving committee members Lenore Thompson, Libby Brown and Carmel Muscillo. These ladies have devoted many years to the Past Pupils’ Association, fulfilling many roles over their tenures. Thank you as well to outgoing members Rebecca Cronin, Margaret Jennings and Mary Crowley for their involvement with our committee. We are most grateful for the valuable contribution you have all made and wish you all the best in the future.

sto ries To celebrate the conclusion of All Hallows’ 160th Anniversary we invited members of our community to share their memories of All Hallows’.

We received many submissions and unfortunately cannot reproduce them all here. All submissions, however, will become part of the ongoing All Hallows’ story in our 160th Anniversary Collection in our Archives.

Our stories are what define us and sustain us.

A sincere thank you to all who shared theirs.

Following are some of them, beginning with a warm and loving tribute from All Hallows’ School Principal, Mrs Catherine O’Kane, about her own wonderful All Hallows’ role model.

Margaret’s traits of courage and compassion inspired me as my husband Stephen and I were raising her grandchildren.

The values instilled in Margaret, in part by her time at All Hallows’, are values I’m pleased to say I see reflected in our students today.

My wonderful mother-in-law, Margaret O’Kane, a woman of great courage and compassion, is a past pupil of All Hallows’.

Margaret, now 88, grew up during World War II. Her father served in the Australian Army and was captured in Singapore, becoming a prisoner-of-war and toiling on the BurmaThailand Railway. Although he lived for 30 years after the war, he never recovered from his injuries.

During this tumultuous time, Margaret’s caring nature came to the fore as she helped shoulder family responsibilities.

With her mother a teacher, education was highly valued by Margaret’s family and she was sent to All Hallows’ in 1948 to complete her junior and sub-junior.

After high school, Margaret met and married my father-in-law Mike O’Kane, a primary school principal and eventually a QIT lecturer, and they had six sons. Despite the hectic pace of raising her family, Margaret always had time to help others, volunteering at Terrace, being an active member of the Queen of Apostles Parish in Stafford and volunteering for organisations including Lifeline.

A Whole Day of Silence Angela O’Malley (Begley) Class of 1973, staff member 1978-2020 During my time on staff at All Hallows’ I was involved in the preparation of many student retreats. We would explore themes about self-identity, self-worth, healthy relationships, and social justice. The activities involved fun ice breaker games, meditation and the liturgies which were rich with symbolism and colour.

I must admit that during these times of preparation my mind would recall the memories of my Year 8 Retreat and I would smile at the difference. For us, it was simply a whole day of silence. We would sit in the Chapel with only a few prayer cards and books available for reflection. These long blocks of silence were broken with times when we were allowed to sit on the Terrace but again in silence. Silence was to be maintained during morning tea and lunch on the Terrace but it also provided a welcome change and an opportunity for some bold girls to pass notes!

Personally, I must admit that although it was a challenge and it was a long day, I didn’t really mind this time of solitude and doing nothing. The digital world means that students today live with constant distraction and so they love times of silent meditation on retreat and in Religious Education classes often asking for extra opportunities.

On reflection, perhaps the sisters knew how important it was to simply be still and silent and allow your spirit to catch up but I’m not sure about being thrown in at the deep end!

All Hallows’ Abroad Marie Vallely Mullins Class of 1980, staff member since 1984 Having done a quarter of our 160 years, 3 as a student and 37 as a teacher, I have been blessed to have met so many wonderful people and our paths continue to cross unexpectantly.

In August 2011, my family were fortunate to holiday in the USA. A couple of days after arriving in New York, we realised that a hurricane, Irene, was about to hit. On the morning it was due, we rose early and headed straight for the Empire State Building as that was on our must-do list. By mid-morning, the city was starting to close. There were very few cabs or people in the streets, so we decided to walk back towards the hotel. Arriving at a café which was advertising traditional New York Cheesecake, my family didn’t need too much convincing to go in.

On entering the somewhat crowded café, my husband got in the queue to get served while my daughter and I found a table. When I looked up to get his attention, there was an AHS Past Pupil standing in front of him in the queue. She was by herself, so she happily joined us. Here we are in New York about to be hit by a hurricane and I managed to find an AHS girl.

“AHS Abroad” is not an uncommon event for me, I have run into AHS girls all over the world from the Information girl working at Harrods in London in the mid 80’s to a current student in the queue for tickets at the Louvre in Paris. I have been spotted across a busy street near the Sistine Chapel in Rome and by a flight attendant between Tokyo and Hong Kong.

No matter when or where it happens, it is always a reminder as to how vast the All Hallows’ network is and how lucky we are to be part of it.

The Only Boy Ever ‘Enrolled’ at All Hallows’ School!

A recollection of Francis Gerard Hennessy, son of Kathleen Hennessy (Andersen) as told to his daughter, Tricia Parry, Class of 1980 “As a student of St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, I naturally took more than a passing interest in some of the young ladies who attended All Hallows’ School. My mother, Kathleen Hennessy (Andersen), a past pupil of AHS and a fine musician, was close friends with a number of the Sisters of Mercy in the Convent, and we often took them on picnics and other approved gatherings.

Our family was very involved in tennis, something that my youngest sister Rebecca Devitt and in the following generation, my own three daughters, Tricia Parry, Karen Young and Monique Leadon, all continued the family tradition.

So it came as a complete but not unpleasant surprise when Sister Mary Consilio contacted Mum, requesting the help of our family, or more specifically, me!

Sister Mary Consilio wondered whether I, Francis Gerard Hennessy, member of the Terrace First Four, would consider coming to All Hallows’ in the afternoons to have a ‘hit out’, and be a practise partner for the young ladies of the AHS A Grade Tennis Team.

My response was ‘I most certainly would’.

You see, Sister Mary Consilio oversaw the AHS Tennis Program and she was absolutely determined that her girls would fully prepped to win the prestigious Catholic Secondary Girls Tennis Competition, a feat that All Hallows’ had achieved regularly.

This became a regular commitment for me, first walking over from Terrace, and then later from Teachers’ College, to carry out my duties under the watchful eye of Sister Mary Consilio. There were, however, some advantages to this arrangement. As the only lad on the AHS grounds, I did not face the usual competition when it came to organising invitations to dances, socials etc – and not just for myself, but for all our friends as well.

I must admit, when Sister first referred to me jokingly as the ‘only boy who was enrolled here at All Hallows’, I was somewhat taken aback. But it soon became her affectionate response. Whenever I greeted her with ‘Good Afternoon Sister and May God Bless You’, she would reply with ‘Good Afternoon Francis, our only boy on the AHS rolls’, and then direct me to the tasks of the day.

I remember those days with great fondness. I remember the ‘thwack’ of tennis balls hitting the old wooden racquets while orchestral music drifted down from the Concert Hall, and I, the only boy ever ‘enrolled’ at All Hallows’ , did my best to upholding the values of the AHS motto - God and Duty, instilled in me by my dear, beautiful mother, Kathleen.”

Sister Mary Alpheus’ Perspicacity Anne Shardlow (Haley), Class of 1960 For two years (1957 and 1958), I was in Sister Mary Alpheus’s class.

Every school day of those two years, in order to process into class in the morning or after breaks, our class would assemble in lines near the foot of the narrow wooden staircase that led to our first-floor classroom, then proceed up that staircase to our classroom. (It was very much our classroom, as there Sr M. Alpheus taught all 48 of us six, and for some of us even seven, of our Junior subjects – with great results, I have to say!) At the foot of the stairs, we filed past Sr M. Alpheus, who stood there with dignified impassivity and seemingly lowered gaze, and we, in passing, would give a perfunctory nod, the sketchy remnant of the curtsey accorded to the nuns by girls of some earlier generation.

I was, as teenagers often are, inclined to be a bit rebellious and questioning, and, one day, I decided that I was simply not going to perform this ridiculous nod. So, I approached the foot of the stairs with my head held firmly erect and face forward.

But, as I was actually passing Sr M. Alpheus a very strange thing happened: to my complete surprise, I found myself so affected by her presence that I actually turned towards her and gave her a slight, but very real, bow.

Performance Anxiety Anne Shardlow (Haley), Class of 1960 When I was about 14 years old, I won the Trinity College prize for the highest mark in the Brisbane area for the Speech and Drama exam I had taken.

As a result, I had to attend the Trinity College prizegiving event which was held annually in the Albert Street Methodist Church hall – and not just attend!! I was required to stand up on the stage, in my school winter uniform, and recite one of my exam pieces to the packed hall – a daunting prospect.

My Speech and Drama teacher was Sister Mary Marguerite, before she became Principal of All Hallows’ School, and, as I was both soft-voiced and extremely nervous, on the day of the event she positioned herself at the very back of the high gallery at the back of the hall, having instructed me to forget about everyone else in the hall and just to concentrate on projecting my voice to her.

Having this separate focus turned out to be very useful indeed, because, as I began my recitation, my knees actually began shaking wildly (I had thought that that was just a figure of speech!), and all I could think of was that everyone’s eyes would be riveted on my shaking, brown-stockinged knees!

What’s In A (Nick)Name?

Anne Shardlow (Haley), Class of 1960 Do all teachers wonder what their students’ nickname for them is?

Sister Mary Alpheus told us how she used to wonder what her nickname was, but then, one day, her class was listening to a schools’ English broadcast in which the poem ‘Kubla Khan” was read: ‘In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea…’

When the line about Alph, the sacred river, was read, the classroom was filled with waves of barely suppressed giggling. ‘So then,’ she told us, ‘I knew.’

The Day I (Almost) Met the Queen Elaine Smyth (Dunlea), Class of 1960 In 1951, at the age of 8, I joined my sisters Leonie and Deidre at All Hallows’, starting in Grade 4 down the slope at the junior school...I was the youngest boarder until about Scholarship year.

My special memory is the 1954 ‘drive past’ visit by the Queen and Prince Phillip along Kemp Place towards the Story Bridge.

I was selected to approach the car and present a stuffed koala and kangaroo to the Royal couple in the back seat. However, their driver only slowed down, and all I could do was toss the toys into the open window and try to curtsy without being run over. But I did get to wear a clean uniform mid-week!

One Hour with Mother Teresa Julia Matthews (Vandeleur), School Captain, Class of 1981 In 1981 All Hallows’ had the privilege of receiving a visit from Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

It was an incredible experience for the entire community as she had been honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. There was a sense that we were in the presence of a living Saint. Indeed, Mother Teresa was canonized as a Saint in 2016 by Pope John Paul II. Although a gigantic figure of faith and charitable works, in person, Mother Teresa was very small in stature. Her delicate physical frame reflected her plain humility.

I remember clearly watching as she stood on an elevated podium on the Terrace where she addressed the girls about her vital work with the poor in Calcutta (now Mumbai). Three or four other Sisters from the order stood beside her. She spoke very little English and an interpreter translated her speech as we all listened intently. She carried a small leather suitcase which held 2 white and blue cotton cloth dresses. This was the simple style we recognised from all the images we’d seen of her. She had a single pair of leather shoes and I remember her feet looked tired and worn. For us girls these belongings seemed so sparse, yet Mother Teresa spoke of the richness and reward she experienced doing her work with the poor, God’s work.

My eldest daughter travelled to India in 2011 and she was struck by the poverty in the cities. I was so proud to share my close encounter with Mother Teresa with her; the work she had done in her lifetime and the enduring legacy of the missionaries that continue her work to this day.

As young women at All Hallows’ we were blessed to meet Mother Teresa. As 17 year old senior students, we stood at the crossroads awaiting to enter the wider world. That hour with Mother Teresa was a shaping influence on our fledgling journeys to live Christ’s ministry in the real world. I am forever grateful for the experience.

Another Perspective on Mother Teresa’s Visit

Dr Elizabeth Crane, Class of 1984, AHS Teaching Staff since 1988 Grade 9, 1981, the whole school assembled along the driveway, on the Terrace nearest to the convent and on the convent stairs…

It was a drizzly, rainy grey day...exiting the car to our cheers and the beaming smiles of the Sisters and the Principal, was Mother Teresa...

And I have a very distinct memory of the sun coming out just at that moment.

How To Masticate the Morsel Zita Denholm (White), Class of 1950 From 1947, when we arrived in Sub-Junior until the end of 1949, Sub-Senior year, Sister Mary Cordula was responsible for the boarders’ refectory, and saw to it that we developed a range of social skills.

We were all taught to wait on tables, talk quietly in a crowded room, [...], address the clergy, greet visitors – everything that a well-brought up young Catholic woman should know. It was an apparently endless list.

There were sixteen square tables which seated two girls on each of the four sides – so, 128 girls having breakfast or dining.

Each table was in the charge of the Head of Table, usually a Senior or a Sub-Senior. Next to her sat the Assistant, who might be a reliable Junior. The most lowly places were on the side opposite the Head. That was where the Sub-Juniors sat.

The Head of Table was responsible for the behaviour of the girls in her care. She had the responsibility of correcting firmly any deviations from the rules. So she could, and did, tell her charges to take their elbows off the table, chew with their mouths closed, take the piece of fruit which was nearest to them in the bowl, wipe the gravy off her tie – whatever.

We were all taught to wait on tables, talk quietly in a crowded room, never to gasp when an accident such as a dropped plate occurred, fold serviettes, place cutlery correctly, eat fruit with a knife and fork, write and reply to formal invitations, address the clergy, greet visitors – everything that a well-brought up young Catholic woman should know. It was an apparently endless list.

Most of this education took place in the refectory, but on Sunday nights after Tea – we had our hot meal, Dinner, at midday – we gathered in the main study (ground floor at the end of The Walk) for a lecture on the finer points of table etiquette.

Sister was good at euphemism. She never, in my memory, said ‘chew’ she always said ‘masticate’. We were instructed, for instance, to cut meat into small pieces, use the fork in our right hand (and with the prongs turned downwards) to transfer the food to our mouths, close our lips and ‘masticate the morsel’.

There is a lovely rhythm as well as alliteration in that phrase, and it loaned itself to irreverent parody. I wish I could remember the lyrics of the song that Lorraine Stevens created about Cordula’s Sunday night lectures. The fragments are floating in my head ……how to masticate the morsel of every separate dish… ….and don’t forget how to fold our napkins too and eat up every separate bit of stew…

Remember – do not turn your fork upside down to eat peas, spear them on the prongs – but if you can manage to quietly bog them in potato, that’s convenient and acceptable.

The only foods that should be eaten with the fingers are grapes and asparagus. Of course it was an era before readily available deep fryers, and therefore before chips (or fries) were served on domestic occasions – so there was never need for a decision about them!

The Aviatrix and the Archbishop Maree Nugent, Past Pupils’ Liaison All Hallows’ has a long and illustrious tradition of producing progressive, innovative women of purpose and courage. Ivy Pearce Hassard was no exception.

Born in Ipswich in 1914, Ivy Pearce became one of the first female pilots in the Southern Hemisphere and a fashion pioneer on Queensland’s Gold Coast. She commenced at All Hallows’ in 1928, where she excelled at music, playing the cello, violin, and piano, for which she impressively earned her ‘letters’ while still at school.

Ivy took her first flying lesson at only 16 years of age. By the time she was 18, she had her A-Class pilot’s licence and, compliments of her father, a Tiger Moth plane. She went on to become one of Australia’s first aerobatic pilots.

In 1934 Ivy Pearce was runner-up in the Courier-Mail Flying Scholarship. Despite that accolade, and the fact that there were no other female pilots, certainly no-one so young (let alone one that could do loops in the air), Ivy had trouble finding a willing passenger.

Eventually, the Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, James Duhig, volunteered to be Ivy’s first passenger, joining her on a flight from Archerfield Airport to Ipswich on September 4, 1935. Duhig reported afterwards that Pearce handled the craft admirably and the flight was indeed perfectly steady. However, Pearce later said “I’ve never been absolutely sure whether he put his faith in me or the Almighty on that occasion” After much success as an aviatrix, including out-flying Reg Ansett, founder of Ansett Airlines, in the 1936 Brisbane to Adelaide Air Race, Ivy Pearce Hassard (her married name) went on to become a fashion entrepreneur, opening the first boutique on the Gold Coast, creating the first ever fashion parades in the region, and designing and creating clothing items so desirable people would smuggle cameras into her show to take surreptitious photos of the styles.

Our Constant Friend Bill Tricia Parry (Hennessy), Class of 1980 Despite the many and varied activities that happened at All Hallows’ during the day and well into the night, there was always one constant – someone who was there to protect us, shut windows and doors after us, make sure the convent was safe and secure, or simply to wait until the very last student had been picked up, and then finally lock the gates.

That someone was Bill, Bill Mullen, also known as Sir Bill, Bill The Nightwatchman, Bill the Protector, Bill the Defender.

Bill started at the School as a groundsman, and later moved into the Gatehouse next to the Main Gate, as the Nightwatchman. He became part of the fabric of the All Hallows’ family and community.

We loved Bill – his cheeky smile and contagious laugh; his interest in the activities that we were involved in whether it was sporting or cultural. Bill knew the ebb and flow and rhythm of the All Hallows’ landscape.

How he also knew us all by name was beyond me. He would discreetly cheer from The Walk as we came off the tennis court between sets. Sometimes, he would disappear for a short while – we assumed he was doing his rounds of the school, and he probably was, but we later learned those absences may have also included a quick visit to the TAB! If a musical instrument or bag was left behind at school, we could be pretty confident that Bill, trying to keep us out of strife, would very likely have rescued the abandoned items, and carefully left them in Lost Property so they could be quietly collected the next morning.

Bill was at All Hallows’ School so long he saw generations of families move through the school. He kept a watchful eye over the daughters of students he had looked out for decades before.

In 1994 I was appointed Head of Creative Arts at All Hallows’.

I had seen Bill in the years since I had left AHS, but in his eyes, I still deserved the same watchful care I had received as a student at school. Whether working late in the office, conducting weekend rehearsals, or packing up after a concert, there he would be sitting on the bench outside the Old Kitchen until we were ready to leave, so he could safely walk us to our cars.

While I was still on staff, we had the opportunity to celebrate Bill’s 80th Birthday – although embarrassed by the fuss, he was also absolutely thrilled!

After we had our two daughters, we made regular weekend visits to All Hallows’ to see Bill. When our elder daughter Lucy started in Middle School, the Sisters in the Convent invited us to drop in for a cup of tea. As we left, I noticed a little tear trickle down Lucy’s cheek. I assumed she was feeling nervous about starting her new school, until she explained ‘Mum, I always thought that Bill would be here to meet me and now he’s gone I miss him so much’. Sadly, Bill had died at the age of 84 the previous year.

I know there are thousands of All Hallows’ girls who have countless stories about their encounters with Bill. He was always respectful and appropriate. I had known him since my primary school days at St Ann’s, and I had the privilege of being with him at Mt Olivet Hospital as he left this world in 2006.

He was friend to many, fierce protector of the Sisters, staff and students of All Hallows’ School, the kindest grandfather figure you could wish for. If you ever visit Magnolia Place, you will find a wooden bench placed there in Bill’s honour by the Parry/ Hennessy and Nash/Rosengren families.

Please take a minute to sit there, looking over the grounds, just like he did on a daily basis for so much of his life – and remember our constant friend Bill.

I will always be grateful to Sister Mary Claver who taught me German in Years 11 & 12 (1968 & 1969), including how to say the Our Father & Hail Mary in German.

To give this story some context, back in my school days, students weren’t required to sign an authentication declaration when handing in assignments, not only because assessment was almost always done in exam conditions, but also because our parents didn’t get involved and we didn’t have tutors!

I think I was born with a fear of the dentist.

I was having some dental work done and dreaded the drill and numbing injections.

It was quite hard to get outside ‘assistance’ as I found out in my Year 8 Home Economics sewing class.

Trying to take my mind off the high pitched whine of the drill I would fervently and silently recite,

I am not sure where Sister Mary Eucharia got what she thought was a modern pyjama pattern, described to us as the Baby Doll style! Right from the start, they just seemed wrong on every level.

Vater unser der du bist im Himmel etc, etc............. and Heilige Maria ..............etc etc over and over.

The A line top had short fly away sleeves and a deep scoop neck. The pants were knee length bloomers with an elasticised frill. Having said that, I had zero talent in this area, which caused me anxiety each week when we had our lesson.

I can’t quite remember the last lines of each prayer now, but over the past 53 years my high school German has got me through many, many dental visits.

I was still cutting out when others were already busy on the sewing machines. The finished product was to be marked, so Sister Mary Eucharia would stand at the door at the end of the lesson as we filed out to make sure no one took the pyjamas home.

Hopefully those dentists have also unknowingly benefited from my calling down blessings on them!

At our second last lesson before hand-in day, I was in quite a state at my pending pyjama disaster. Normally a very compliant student, I made the desperate decision to smuggle my pyjamas out so I could take them home for Mum to fix. As we filed past Sister Mary Eucharia, I was sure she was going to call me out, but miraculously she got distracted by another student.

Oh, what a sweet relief!

Mum had a tough time undoing my poor machine work, however, with an iron and neat fold we put them in a bag and I successfully smuggled them back into class.

It was the best pass mark I have ever received. I tried to like them, especially given the effort that Mum had put in, but after one wear my original first impression was right – they were just wrong.

I think we put them in a recycle bag and I can only hope that someone put them to better use!

The Lady Doth Protest...

Zita Denholm (White), Class of 1950 My sister Carmel, one year behind me when she started at All Hallows’ was a protester – actually, she was a Mistress of the Effective Protest.

When we progressed from Sub-Junior to Junior, we moved from the dormitories in the Main Building to those on the top floor of the University Wing. The two large dormitories were dedicated respectively to Our Lady (the larger one) and the Sacred Heart.

The beds in the Sacred Heart dormitory were a bit shorter than the beds in Our Lady’s and were usually allocated to the girls who were shorter, and always to Juniors. Our Lady’s was the preserve of taller Juniors and Sub-Seniors.

When Carmel moved to the University Wing she was given a bed in Sacred Heart. Being a SubSenior I was in Our Lady’s. This may have been to keep the pair of us separated, possibly even to give Carmel some peace from my domineering presence, but she was, manifestly, too tall for the bed.

Night 1: Being Carmel, she inspected the bed, and then she requested a move.

‘Not possible!’

Night 2: Nothing if not persistent, Carmel again requested a move, insisting that she had not been able to get any sleep the previous night.

‘I don’t know what the fuss is about. It’s the same as every other bed.’

Very reasonable and polite, ‘I am not the same as every other girl. I’m taller.’

‘Get into bed and stop making a show.’

Virtuous (but also devious) Carmel obeyed.

Night 3: ‘Carmel White! Again!’

My sister made her preparations for maximum effect.

Before her classmates were themselves ready, she placed a chair at the foot of her bed, untucked the sheets and blankets, got into bed, pushed her feet out through the iron frame bed-end, arranged a towel over her toes ‘to keep them warm’, and with some gentle snoring pretended to be asleep.

It was impossible to keep a whole dormitory of teen-aged girls from giggling, especially as they all understood the protest. Making or causing noise in the dormitory at bedtime was as wicked as not giving up lollies for Lent (and Advent) or holding conversations in the toilet block.

All Hallows’ boarders did not commit those crimes.

Sister on duty arrived to investigate the unseemly behaviour, Carmel was ‘wakened’, told to put on her dressing-gown, and moved to a bed which had been vacant all the time in Our Lady’s.

And silence reigned in Sacred Heart.

Joan and Me – Kathrin’s Story Kathrin Grave (Klauke), exchange student in 11 and 12C, 1989/90 In August 1989 I travelled all the way from Wilhelmshaven/Germany to Brisbane for one year. I was seventeen years old at that time.

My first host sister attended All Hallows’ School, and therefore I ended up in the same fawn school uniform. My school in Germany back then was (and still is) a Catholic school as well, but that is probably the only similarity.

The girls in my class were fabulous and made it easy to make new friends (thank you 11C and Mrs. Blair). I joined the choir, played cello in one of the orchestras, took flute lessons and became a member in the flute choir, had the possibility to be part of the school trip down to the Snowy and enjoyed being part of the community. I can still hum the school anthem today, which also proves that the time at All Hallows´ really inspired me.

My first host family was wonderful, but after about five months I moved to Sandgate to live with my second host family, the Drapers. My second host sister was in my class at All Hallows’ and we got on so well that she decided to come and live with us in Germany for a year.

And believe it or not: I became an English teacher and my host sister Joan fell in love with a German boy and is still here in Germany. I was ‘best man’ at her wedding and she reciprocated the honour at mine!

So my time at All Hallows´ definitely changed the course of our lives! I am very grateful for the opportunity I had, and – of course - I always encourage my students to spend some time abroad. I have never been back, but if I ever get the chance to travel to Australia again, I will definitely stop at 547 Ann Street. I wish you all the best for the next 160 years.

The Art of Modesty Gwenyth Cutler, Class of 1955 Those doing Senior (grade 12) did physics on Saturdays. Dorothy and I did Art that day. It was a relaxed time in Sister Mary Celestine’s room. Sometimes she produced art books for us to look at. I remember being intrigued by some colourful books of pictures by the French Impressionists, Degas, Monet and Renoir. They were draped in strange towels or bathing costumes which could be partially removed by scratching with your fingernail. So our eyes would not see naked bodies, Sister Mary Celestine had painted on the swimming costumes and towels to cover them.

During the time of Sister Mary Loreto who was Head of the School some girls tried to raise the height of their hems. Every so often there was an inspection of hem length.

I think we were allowed the width of two fingers above the knee. If it was deemed the hem length was too short the girl had to sit in the large study/ classroom which Sister Mary Loreto occupied, along with two open classes, and unpick the hem and attempt to sew it up to the designated height.

When Mum was at All Hallows’ in the 1950’s, there were lessons on Saturday mornings.

Mum said that she and other students were always anxious to make it out the front gate before the bell rang at midday for the lengthy Angelus prayer. If they were still on the school grounds when that bell rang, they were not allowed to leave until the Angelus was completed, extending the school day by several minutes!

When I was in year 11 or 12 our watches were confiscated for several days as they were not considered part of the school uniform. We had to go to Sister Mary Loretto, apologise for wearing them and ask for them back.

Year 12’s: 0 Sister Mary Borgia: 1 Cathie Neil, Class of 1974, Head of Culture When I was in Year 12 in 1974, the Year 12 classrooms were on the ground floor of Aquinas.

My class teacher was the very gentle and quietly spoken Sr Mary Borgia, one of whose passions was looking after the gardens around the school, and in particular the sloping terraced garden that separated the Terrace and Aquinas. You would often see her early in the morning or late in the afternoon, (if you had netball training or music practice as I did) watering and tending the various seasonal plants and flowers she had sowed so lovingly.

One day we arrived at school and noted that the garden had grown overnight with the addition of many new flowers and stems, which on second glance seemed to be of non-organic (as in plastic) origins. A quick investigation must have followed as a couple of days later, to our collective amusement and newly found respect for Sr Mary Borgia, we observed several of our peers assisting, somewhat sheepishly, with the watering, weeding and general maintenance of the new ‘flora’ that had appeared so mysteriously!

Destiny Claire Easton, Director of Mission As I look back at my almost 30 years as a teacher at All Hallows’ School, I believe I was destined to be here. At the end of the second year of my Arts degree in Sydney, my new husband Paul and I decided to move to Brisbane to give ourselves a better chance of buying a house. Paul was about to start his first job with Price Waterhouse and I needed to complete my degree and then my Dip Ed. Prior to moving to Queensland we came up for a holiday with friends. We hired a ‘Rent-a-Bomb’ car from the Gold Coast and drove to Brisbane for our first look at the city that would be our home. Eventually, we found ourselves on the Story Bridge and I said to Paul, “I wonder what that building is there at the end.” As we drew nearer Paul said that he thought it looked like a school, to which I responded, “I’m going to work there one day”.

Two years later, towards the end of the recession, there were very few teaching positions in Brisbane – nobody was moving jobs. It was April of 1992 before I even got a job interview. But withing 2 days I had an interview at a school on the Gold Coast and one at All Hallows’ School. I really wanted the one at All Hallows’ because we had just purchased our first home in Brisbane and… well, it was All Hallows’!

Eventually, we found ourselves on the Story Bridge and I said to Paul, “I wonder what that building is there at the end.” As we drew nearer Paul said that he thought it looked like a school, to which I responded, “I’m going to work there one day”.

After my Gold Coast interview, I had a feeling I might be offered the job. The next day, I had the interview for a part-time job at All Hallows’. I thought it also went well but I couldn’t be certain. I was told a decision would be made that afternoon and if successful, I would hear after 3pm.

I was so sure that I would be offered the Gold Coast job that day, that I went home and took the phone off the hook so they couldn’t contact me. At 3.10pm, I placed the phone on the receiver and it rang soon after. I nervously answered only to hear Paul’s frantic voice at the other end.

“Where on earth have you been?” he said, “The Gold Coast Principal has been trying to reach you all day to offer you the job.” How they located Paul at his place of work I don’t know, but now I was in a bit of a quandary – do I put the receiver back on the phone or wait a bit longer in case All Hallows’ called?

“

I decided to take the risk and put the phone back on the hook. Just after 3.30pm, the phone rang. To my delight, it was Sr Anne Hetherington calling to offer me the job as an English/RE teacher for the remainder of the year.

The rest, as they say, is history!

Anne-Marie Ward—A passion for languages and life Anne Goulding, Class of 1979 Anne-Marie Ward holds a special place in the hearts of students and staff of All Hallows’ between 1975 and 2010. She is remembered as an exceptional teacher, mentor and friend. Hallmarks of her character included her kindness, genuine interest in people and great sense of joy and fun.

Anne-Marie was a student at All Hallows’ from 1955 to 1967, before becoming a teacher of French and German. Later in her career, she returned to university and qualified to teach Japanese.

Her students recall that Anne-Marie’s passion for the subjects she taught extended to arranging events such as Bastille Day morning teas, with French fare purchased from the nearby Eiffel Tower Pâtisserie. She also arranged dinners with students at restaurants such as La Grange and the Munich Steak House. Immersion trips to New Caledonia became regular events organised by Anne-Marie. Several of her students continued their language studies at university, no doubt inspired by Anne-Marie’s passion for her subjects.

Former student, Anne Goulding recalls that Anne-Marie had a great love of travel and holidayed annually in destinations across the world.

Anne still has several postcards from Anne-Marie describing her adventures. Anne-Marie kept in contact with many of her former students and was always interested to know about their lives.

In 2011, Anne-Marie travelled to Noumea with former class of 1979 students, Helen Gore (See), Michelle Grau, Kate McKeon, Tina Bakker (Jell) and Tina’s family. There were many laughs and enjoyed experiences during that trip. In these later years, several students from the 1979 group also enjoyed Anne-Marie’s friendship at lunches and dinners as well as visits to the French Film Festival. Champagne was a feature at these events!

Anne-Marie’s great faith was reflected in her approach to life and people and her love of everything about All Hallows’. Sadly, she passed away in 2012 but she was still travelling up until three months before her death. She will always be remembered with great affection by all who knew her.

Stay Away From Those Anglicans James McIntyre, from memories of his mother Dorothy Murphy, Class of 1955 I remember Mum telling me that All Hallows’ girls were told, that on no account were they to meet up with the boys from Churchie for milkshakes at the city milk bars. There was no mention, however, of whether it was acceptable to meet up with boys from Terrace or Nudgee at the milk bars!

One School, Two Houses, Three Home Rooms Genevieve Easton, Class of 2017 At All Hallows’, when you are allocated to a House in your entry year, that is your House for the rest of your stay at the school. Unless of course, your mother works there and completely messes things up for you…

My mum (Claire) was Acting Head of Adderton House during my Year 7 year in 2012. I had been in Gorry House since arriving in Year 5 and I was proud to be a golden girl.

At the end of 2012, however, the Head of Gorry House retired and Mum was offered the role in a permanent capacity. Of course, I was thrilled for her, but this is where the drama started.

For logistical reasons, I couldn’t be in the same house as my mother so, I had to move from Gorry House when I started high school the next year. Mum broke this news to me as we drove to Celebration of Excellence that night. I was devastated. Belonging to a house is like being part of a family… and now I was just supposed to move families.

I eventually came to terms with changing houses and actually began to feel very excited about the move to Adderton as I would be in the same house as my best friend. Moving houses for the first year of high school felt normal, appropriate even; most of my peers were new to the school and knew no different. I settled into life as an Addertonian well and had a fantastic Home Group – AD3 with Mrs Malone. Things felt comfortable… AD3 was beginning to feel like family to me.

Until… in March of that year, the Head of Adderton House decided to leave and in the interests of continuity, Mum was asked if she would return to the house she had led the previous year – Adderton – my new house!

Off I went again, back to Gorry. There were more tears, of course. It felt like the AHS gods were out to get me – change is hard when you’re 13 years old. However, I soon realized that I was blessed with yet another brilliant Home Group – GO2 with Ms Hickey. Somehow, I was lucky enough to be blessed with two phenomenal home group ‘families’ in just as many terms.

This all happened just two years before all Home Groups were reshuffled to accommodate the incoming Year 7 cohort. I would be moving ‘families’ yet again. All I could think was ‘Really? Again? That would make it three homegroups and two houses in three years.’

By the start of 2015, I was in GO3 with Ms Allen and 21 of my Gorry Sisters. As a family, we ate many birthday cakes together, shared opinions on dozens of semi and formal dresses each year, and triumphantly won the Gorry Grail for three consecutive years.

I could not be more thankful that GO3 was my family until I graduated in 2017.

A Bomb in the Bin?

The scene, 1984...once again the school is assembled on the Terrace in evacuation mode for what felt like the 1000th time because of a bomb scare or a drill !

I think in reality there had been about 6 ‘bomb scares’ that year.

Our Principal at that time had probably had enough of these distractions and ordered the Grade 12’s (of which I was one) to search all the bins in Aquinas Building and mall areas.

Interesting conversation around the dinner table that night with Mother saying, “you did WHAT today...?”.

Our cohort had watched for more than a year the building of the Claver, pool, gym and piazza area but due to delays we never got to use any of these facilities before we graduated.

After Final Assembly and Guard of Honour through the school, which ended in the newly completed Piazza, the Year 12 students spontaneously jumped fully clothed into the new pool. We were determined to have one swim before we left.

Dr Perry said though she was disappointed, she could understand the students’ actions.

The teachers has a chuckle at those students who forgot to remove their mobile phones from their pockets before jumping in.

Mrs Florey, however, seemed more preoccupied with trying to save our watches.

Pearls of Wisdom Wendy Florey, Deputy Principal – Students, 2002-2021 My 20 year part of the 160 year All Hallows’ story commenced towards the end of 2001 when at the last minute I applied for the position of Deputy Principal Students which was being vacated by my long standing friend Jan Neumann after 14 years.

I had decided against applying for the position because I had just accepted a permanent leadership role at another school. Jan was convinced I should apply regardless, and a couple of days before the closing date insisted I at least put in an application.

We worked on my application together at her house over the weekend and Jan delivered it in person on the Monday morning it was due.

Jan loved All Hallows’ and made an amazing contribution to this School through her pastoral care of thousands of our students.

After leaving All Hallows’, Jan became Principal of St Monica’s in Cairns, and I was offered and accepted the position at All Hallows’.

After her passing, Jan’s sisters gave me a beautiful string of pearls [...], and I wore them proudly in her honour when I made my farewell speech as I retire from All Hallows’ after twenty years as Deputy Principal Students.

Jan and I remained friends throughout her time in Cairns and then as Principal of Brigidine College, Indooroopilly. Sadly, Jan passed away from ovarian cancer in December 2013 and as I said in her eulogy, Jan’s love of All Hallows’ and ties to the Mercy tradition never ceased.

After her passing, Jan’s sisters gave me a beautiful string of pearls given to Jan by the All Hallows’ P & F when she left, and I wore them proudly in her honour when I made my farewell speech as I retire from All Hallows’ after twenty years as Deputy Principal Students.

Jan passed her love of All Hallows’ onto me, and I have been so blessed to have been so lovingly embraced by the All Hallows’ community over the years. Overseeing the implementation of the 8 House vertical pastoral system in 2003 and watching it flourish over the years to provide ongoing pastoral care and support to thousands of All Hallows’ students and their families has been my greatest joy. As I retire from teaching after forty two years and from my beloved All Hallows’ after twenty years, I know that just like my friend Jan, All Hallows’ and all of the staff, students and families that I have been privileged to meet and work with will forever remain dear to my heart.

Memories of Family and Friends These were kindly and lovingly collected by Nicola (Nic) Mullins (Breene) Class of 1982 From Marcia Maranta RSM (Class of 1950): Sister Mary Loretto had a black book which names would go into if you were in trouble.

A boarder (who was supposed to be a friend) asked Marcia to buy some boiled lollies for her as they weren’t able to get any. Marcia bought some and gave them to her, and when her friend was caught, she straight away admitted who had got them for her.

As a result, Marcia was sent to Sr Mary Loretto’s office where her name was entered into the black book. To make matters worse, this caused her to be late for choir which resulted in Sr Mary Celine making her sing solo in front of the whole choir.

Not a good day and obviously one she still remembers after all these years. She even remembers the name of the boarder very clearly, but we chose not to disclose this other than that her first name was Molly!

From Beryl Breene (Maranta) Class of 1958: In 1958 Beryl was in Year 12 and they were to have their Soiree in the Concert Hall at All Hallows’. The boys from both Nudgee and Terrace were chosen by the school. On the night of the Soiree their names were put into a hat and the girls would pick one out. This young man would be their partner for the start of the Soiree. Gypsy Tap and Progressive Barn Dance were the popular dances of choice.

Mum recalls Sr Mary Loretto and other Sisters being on the stage of the Concert Hall for the entire soiree to supervise the evening.

The hat band was removed from your hat if you had done something wrong and everyone who saw you at school would know you had done something wrong. For example, if you travelled on a tram or bus and people complained to the school that you were making too much noise or were not wearing your gloves, you would be called up. The punishment was to have your hat band removed - for up to 6 months.

From Margaret Boman (Eaton) Class of 1959:

Margaret recalls when she was in Year 3 in 1951 there was roll call in the Study. A passenger on the West End bus had made a complaint and any girl who caught that bus was asked to step forward.

Margaret did as requested, even though she was tiny at the time (being Year 3) and the other girls were older. The next instruction was to step forward if you had talked to any boys on that bus. Margaret stepped forward with the other older girls and as a result had her name was put on the Board for a whole year due to this mishap. Margaret was very upset about this injustice as the boy she had been talking to was her brother who went to Terrace!

From Betty Mullins (Gardiner) Class of 1948: Betty remembers that in the mid 1940’s on the 1st of November Sr. Mary Julius and Sr. Mary Alpheus would decorate the statue of Mary in front of the Convent with streamers coming down from her hands and flowers all around her feet.

The students would then parade around the statue singing hymns. They did not sing the Angeli as only the boarders were allowed to learn it and sing it in the Chapel. The Day girls never had that privilege.

The Power of Prayer, The Strength of The Sisterhood Lwana Bradshaw (Chayeb), Class of 1992 My story is about how God works in mysterious and wonderful ways.

Nandani Louchart (Dutta), Caroline Brumpton (Knott) and I were best friends at All Hallows’ but we went our separate ways after Grade 12 and despite efforts to the contrary, we lost touch.

I reminisced about my school friends often, wondered how they were and what they were doing. I used to refer to us as The 3 Stooges. We almost did everything together and were inseparable at school.

Years went by and in 2013, I was pregnant with my second child when I developed pre-eclampsia, which put both my and my baby’s life at risk.

I was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety and begged God to give me strength to get through this.

While in hospital awaiting life-threatening surgery, something made me put a post on Facebook (I had tried to find Nandani and Caroline before this way, without success). But this time, Nandani and Caroline saw it. After 21 years, I received a message from them – followed by a surprise visit that very afternoon. It felt like God had indeed heard me and answered my prayers. My dearest friends, my sisterhood, had come back to me. We hugged, laughed just like old times, and relived so many school memories.

I firmly believe that seeing my friends again gave me the strength to get through the next day, when I delivered my miracle boy, Tarik Bradshaw, who, after a very rocky start, is now a happy and healthy 9 year old!

I am so grateful for Nandani and Caroline and for my years at All Hallows’ which fostered a bond and a sisterhood that has sustained me in my darkest days and continues to bring me great joy.

Connecting in the Time of COVID The Online Liturgy For the second year in a row, our past pupil community was able to share an online liturgy on what was to have been our Annual Mass and Reunion Day. Many past pupils from our milestone year groups contributed to its prayers and readings.

The liturgy was watched in many different time zones and places around the world. It helped to connect us through its message of hope, founded in the belief that a community made remote is still a community.

EVENTS

Reunions While on-site reunions could not happen at the School, several groups went ahead with their off-site plans, either on what would have been Reunion Day, or some time soon after.

They have kindly shared news and images from these events. Those unable to attend were missed and remembered, while those who could be together did so with joy and gratitude.

Class of 1966 – 55 Year Reunion 25 Seniors of 1966 gathered aboard the Kookaburra Queen for a luncheon cruise on the Brisbane River on 25/11/2021. While the weather was not perfect, most of us were unaware as there was so much chatter and reminiscing.

We were delighted to welcome our much-loved teacher Catharine Courtney (who we knew as Sister Mary Benedict), who taught many of us for Senior. We renewed friendships that we first made all those years ago - it seemed like only yesterday as we recalled and re-visited our days at All Hallows’.

Class of 1970 – 50+1 Year Reunion Almost 50 members of the Senior Class of 1970 and the Junior Class of 1968 attended a stand-up cocktail party at Oakwood Apartments (opposite All Hallows’) on Saturday October 30, exactly a year after our original planned reunion date. The food was plentiful, and the drinks kept flowing as we re-connected with old friends and connected with classmates, we may not have spent much time with before.

The atmosphere was jolly, convivial and inclusive, tinged with just a little sadness for the 10 girls we have lost, each represented by a candle and name tag. The video messages from absent friends, the powerpoint displays, memorabilia and photos proved to be great conversation starters.

Such a good time was had by all that we resolved to meet again in 4 years’ time, rather than wait another 9 years for our milestone 60th!

Class of 1971 – 50 Year Reunion Approximately 60 members from the Class of 1971 gathered for a fabulous 50 year reunion at Cloudland, Fortitude Valley on Saturday October 30. A further 10 girls from our year also dialed in for the ‘Zoom’ portion of the event – from as far away as Edinburgh.

The venue was great, the room a perfect size for our group and the catering excellent! It was a wonderful afternoon filled with lots of laughter and reminiscing. We had lots of positive compliments about the day and intend to meet more regularly in future years.

Class of 1981 – 40 Year Reunion On what was to be Reunion Day on October 30, a group of 13 girls from the Class of 1981 reunited at George’s Paragon Seafood restaurant at Eagle Street Pier (with a view of All Hallows’ School). Our numbers may have been small but spirits were high and the thrill of being together was palpable - some of the group had literally not seen each other for 40 years. It was so lovely to catch up with each other’s lives and reminisce about our old school days.

Inspired by the success of the first event, an impromptu catch up was also held a few weeks later for some of those who were not able to attend the lunch at George’s.

Those who couldn’t travel or were unable to make either gathering were much missed and we resolved to have another bigger get together long before another 10 years goes by!

A special thank you to Annette O’Hara for taking the lead on organising these events.

Class of 1991 – 30 Year Reunion On Sunday 14th of November, more than 30 ladies from the Class of 1991 met at the Osborne Hotel in Fortitude Valley for a casual afternoon catch-up. It was lovely to reconnect with those that were able to attend, despite the closure of state and international borders and the cancellation of the formal reunion function.

Many stories were shared from our school days from 1987 through to 1991, and the school annuals on the tables were good fun to flick through with a cocktail in hand!

Thank you to all who attended and especially those who flew down from up north and to the ladies who helped to organise the afternoon, especially Letiscia Xavier McMullen, Anne Bannister, Anna-Maria Ridolphi and Kate Ward.

Class of 2001 – 20 Year Reunion On 30 October 2021, the class of 2001 gathered at Bar Pacino on Eagle Street Pier to reminisce and reconnect with that familiar backdrop from All Hallows’ days: the Story Bridge and Brisbane River.

Thanks to Bridget Delahunty for leading the informal get together and enabling us to mark our 20 Year anniversary.

Word was spread via social media and the event was well-attended with over 50 women (and one baby) present.

Many apologies were received from interstate and overseas, due in part to prevailing border restrictions. The most far-flung of those regretfully unable to attend must surely be Erin Oostenbroek who sent apologies from Sakhalin (a Russian Island in the Pacific Ocean).

All in all the event was a resounding success. The dresses had frills. The heels were high (but not so high as 10 years ago). The smiles were genuine. There were calls for a do-over, perhaps in 2022, or at least to mark 25 years since our last lunch-time dance around the All Hallows’ flagpole.

International Women’s Day Breakfast 2022 Friday, March 4, 2022. Cloudland. 7.00am.

Although the IWD breakfast has previously been a biennial event, our new format (‘two sides of the story’ conversation, express breakfast, work/lifefriendly timing) was so well received in 2021, we will keep the fast and fabulous momentum going in 2022!

In keeping with the 2022 theme of #breakthebias, we are thrilled to announce 2 very special past pupil/ guest speakers, Eugenie Buckley and Jamie-Lee Lewis. We applaud their amazing achievements, both personally and professionally, but particularly in sport, traditionally one of the most ‘unlevel playing fields’ for women.

Our new signature cocktails and connections event was cancelled in 2021, but fingers crossed it will become a past pupil social highlight of 2022 and beyond.

Eugenie (Class of 1988) is a national and international leader in sport events and administration. She was worked for or consulted to Rugby Australia, Football Australia, ICC, Queensland Reds, Brisbane Roar, Netball Queensland and is the newly appointed CEO of Swimming Australia.

Jamie-Lee (Class of 2008) is the first deaf person to represent Australia in a hearing sport (water polo) and has played elite level Rugby and QRLW (league).

She works in concreting and also hopes to have her carpentry ticket soon.

Eugenie and Jamie will share their sides of the story with moderator/MC Aislin Kriukelis (Class of 2002) from the Nine Network’s Today Show.

Farewell Miss Florey Wendy Florey is significant to literally thousands of our past pupils. She has walked a sometimes challenging path with many, and always with great care, compassion, consideration, justice and faith. At the heart of her actions and decisions has always been the welfare of the students and their family.

Wendy has left an indelible mark on the story of All Hallows’, not the least of which has been the development of the House Pastoral system and the evolution of the School’s Wellbeing focus.

I thank you all for your kindness, friendship, generosity and support which I will never forget It has been a journey where I have shared some happy, sad, special and significant occasions and experiences with so many.

It has been an absolute blessing in my life to be part of the 160-year story of All Hallows’ School. Inspired

by Catherine McAuley’s words to “trust in God’s providence” I feel sure that my own path and especially the path of my beloved All Hallows’ School moving forward is one of opportunity, gratitude and positivity”

A big thank you to Hannah who worked with the All Hallows’ Year 10 Drama class on a specially commissioned play, Heatwave, which explores the intertwined issues of student activism and use of social media.

Vale Shirley McCorkindale

A life of distinguished service As a young woman, Shirley, born on August 11, 1930, was an accomplished ballet dancer, achieving the highest vocation graded examination, the Solo Seal, and maintaining a love of dance and opera throughout her life.

Fluent in French, Italian, Greek and Russian, Shirley graduated with a BA degree with Honours in FrenchGerman from the University of Queensland, and went on to receive her MA and in later years, Master of Theology.

In a long and successful career spanning some forty years at the State Library of Queensland, Shirley co-ordinated library services to Queensland Government departments and was the Library’s first genealogy librarian. She was awarded a medallion for achievement within the State Public Service, and retired in 1995.

A keen traveller, photographer and collector, in her eulogy she was described as ‘knowledgeable, reliable, with a wonderful sense of humour and a rapier wit!

A long term member of the Brisbane History Group, her proof reading skills were legendary, as was her capacity to improvise after she substituted for a speaker who failed to show up at on BHG seminar by reading Mt Pickwick’s address to the Pickwick Club to the assembled audience.

A proud member of All Hallows’ Class of 1948, Shirley passed away on June 23, 2021

Dorothy McIntyre (Murphy)

Recollections of a devoted teacher by a loving son More than anything, Mum’s father wanted all his girls (Dorothy, Helen and Colleen) to complete Senior, and All Hallows’ made that possible. Mum told me she always knew she wanted to be a teacher and thanks to her All Hallows’ education she was able to go to Teacher’s College and pursue her chosen career.

After just one year of Teacher’s College training at Kelvin Grove, Dorothy, and her AHS friends Judy Jordan and Gwenyth Cutler (Barns), was sent into the primary school classrooms. It is almost impossible to imagine being put in charge of a classroom when you are not even 20 years old and have only a year’s training - they were certainly thrown in the deep end!

Mum started her teaching career at Petrie Terrace State School and when she turned 21, became eligible for country service.

She was first sent to be the sole teacher at Tandar State School (near Gympie) and then to a four-teacher school at Kalkie (outside Bundaberg) for three years.

After completing country service, she returned to Brisbane and taught at Indooroopilly State School until the early 1970’s (when I was born.) According to my mother, students at Indooroopilly were frequently tested on spelling and multiplication, and a teacher never knew when the headmaster might pop down to the classroom to keep an eye on the students’ progress.

Teaching was never just a 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock, 40 weeks a year role for Mum. Every evening she prepared the next day’s lessons, and planning for the upcoming term began well before the end of the school holidays.

Mum returned to full-time teaching at Oxley State School in 1983 and commenced her final posting, teaching Grade 2 at Ironside State School in 1990.

It was wonderful that her dedication was recognised

by Education Queensland on World Teachers’ Day 2000 with a Golden Apple Award for her contribution to education.

Even when she retired around 2003 after 40 years of full-time service, she remained involved at Ironside for many years after, and would visit the school to help out the Grade 2 teachers a few days a week.

Although she did not have any granddaughters, I know that, had there been any, she would have loved them to attend All Hallows’. She took great pride in seeing the School’s strong academic performance (and was happy to remind me of it when AHS had outperformed Terrace.) She was so delighted that Colleen’s granddaughters went to All Hallows’.

But the most important legacy from Mum’s time at All Hallows’ was her friendship with Gwenyth and Judy – they were at AHS together, trained as teachers together and remained firm friends for almost 70 years.

Gay Welch

The First All Hallows’ Supermodel?

Long before the world discovered our Miranda Kerr, there was Gabrielle Welch, who was born in 1933 in Paddington, Brisbane and attended All Hallows’ School between 1942 and 1948.

In 1952, Gay travelled to London and enrolled at the Lucy Clayton College for Ladies, which was Britain’s top modelling agency at that time. Her career took off after graduation when Gay was invited by Norman Hartnell, the Queen’s dressmaker, to model a collection for the Queen Mother.

Welch ultimately moved to Paris, where she was scouted by Hubert de Givenchy while in the audience of one of his shows. She went on to model for Coco Chanel, who famously sacked all her models – except Gay – at the end of the season.

Welch returned to Australia in the early 1960’s, living in Sydney before settling on the Gold Coast where she started her own modelling school.

While Gay became passionate about the environment and promoting First Nations art internationally, her love of fashion was a life-long passion.

When she passed away in 2016, her extraordinary and significant haute couture collection which reflects the changing role and image of women in the 20th century, was gifted to the Queensland Museum.

It includes iconic designer garments and accessories

by Coco Chanel, Givenchy, Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Norman Hartnell, Pierre Balmain plus photos, clippings and handwritten notes.

The Gay Welch Collection is currently being catalogued and researched and will hopefully be available to the public in the near future.

Bernice Aboud

“The greatest virtue is love...”

Bernice Malouf was born on August 9, 1922. She attended All Hallows’ from 1935 to 1939.

Her brother Calile (‘Cal’) recalled that after their mother almost died giving birth to their sibling Michael, Bernice insisted that she leave boarding at All Hallows’ and act as ‘mother’ to the family. According to Cal, Bernice ruled the house as if it were All Hallows’ School, and was as strict as the Mercy nuns with her brother and sisters, who adored her in spite of her dexterity with the straw broom.

In 1942 when the Japanese were getting perilously close to Brisbane and the rest of the family evacuated to relatives in Connabarabran, NSW Bernice stayed on with her father to keep running the family business, Marcia Gowns. This was a typical example of her putting others before herself.

An extraordinary and ‘empowered’ woman, a gracious and generous hostess, Bernice was comfortable anywhere and in any company. She was a treasured friend to many. One such friend is Pauline Burnett (Long), who Bernice met at All Hallows’ when she was just 11 years old. They went to the pictures every Saturday together, contributed to the war effort together, and together they kept the American soldiers entertained too.

After Bernice moved to Sydney on her marriage to Alf Aboud, she and Pauline spoke every Saturday by phone without fail. They were the best of mates – and distance made no difference to their lifelong friendship.

A child of the Depression, she had an ingrained respect for work, resilience, and thrift (although this frugality did not extend to her collection of Ferragamo shoes!)

Attention to detail in life was everything to Bernice.

“The nuns taught me that” she would say. ‘They taught me everything” Bernice was not only matriarch of her family (as her son Russell said, family was everything) , but also our All Hallows’ Sydney reunions, which were unfortunately cancelled due to Covid in 2020 and 2021.

Bernice died in Sydney at the age of 99 years and 3 months. She was, and will be, much loved, much missed.

Continuing Catherine’s Legacy There is an Indian proverb that goes something like, “Blessed are those who plant trees under whose shade they will never sit”. I am paraphrasing just a little to convey that our donors, who support the work of the Foundation, give to benefit others, most of whom they will never meet.

To all our AHSisters who have given through the Foundation this year (regardless of whether you have supported building development or the Catherine McAuley Bursary) we thank you for your generosity and advocacy.

Our Activities this year Our annual appeal this year invited our community to give to the reimagined Potter building and more specifically, to the Senior Study Centre. Our families could additionally give to the Catherine McAuley Bursary. We were able to raise over $42,000 during a

period that continued to challenge our plans to engage our community face-to-face on campus. Thank you to everyone who donated.

We continued to build upon the pledge program which enables us to; • Continue the extraordinary legacy of Catherine McAuley through the bursary fund providing opportunities to families who might not ordinarily consider All Hallows’ due to financial reasons •

Plan and design facilities and programs that create the most appropriate and impactful environments for our students and community

Maintain our fees at a comparatively moderate level – with a forecasted decrease in government funding, this will be increasingly challenging.

From Mercy Congregation Leader, Sr Catherine Reuter rsm:

A message to our newest past pupils, the Class of 2021 It’s Tuesday Morning and I wanted to put fingers to keyboard to wish you the joy and blessings of the end of a very different and uncertain but in no way less significant Year 12.

In these strange COVID times and throughout the school’s 160th year you have surely experienced what Catherine McAuley spoke about over 190 years ago in her cycle of “joys and sorrows intertwined, one following the other” and “of complicated joy with vulnerability and possibility intertwined”.

Your Graduation this week is a time when you will acknowledge these paradoxes but live into the joy and celebration of your personal achievements as well as the incredible witness as a Year 12 student body that you have been for the AHSisterhood. I have been truly amazed, as have the Sisters, at your creativity in staying connected, your sense of purpose and application, your acceptance of what is, your willingness to see possibilities and your incredible resilience in the ebb and flow of life as you could never have imagined in January 2020 as you entered Year 11.

The farewells and goodbyes will be difficult because they come tempered with that sense of loss and deep sadness wrapped in all endings but be assured that the seeds of the future are already held in you. You are young, well-educated, mercy women who have good news to spread.

Remember that God’s abiding ‘spirit of mercy’ will continue to guide you through the unfolding chapters of your life. Be open to and listen for these God whispers.

You will be reminded on many occasions this week you are an All Hallows’ girl!

Please don’t take this ‘gift’ for granted but live into it and into the future - be generous, just, tender-hearted and gracious towards others.
