Celebrating 160 years of Mercy Education

In 2021, All Hallows’ celebrates the 160th anniversary of the foundation of our School.

On 10 May 1861, Mother M Vincent (Ellen) Whitty and her companions, including SM Benedict McDermott, SM Cecilia McAuliffe, SM Catherine Morgan and postulant Emily Conlan (later SM Bridget), arrived in Brisbane from Ireland and England.

One can only imagine the first impressions of these courageous missionaries as they surveyed colonial Brisbane.

Mother Vincent’s leadership was founded on her firm trust in God’s providence. She was greatly influenced by the spirituality of Catherine McAuley, who had personally guided her formation, and the two sisters remained close until Catherine’s death in 1841.

Could Mother Vincent and her companions have dared to dream of All Hallows’ in the 21st century— its eminent place in society and the outstanding achievements of its students locally, nationally and internationally; its active outreach of Mercy spirituality at home and abroad; and the state-of-the-art learning spaces surrounding the beautiful Chapel?

Throughout 160 years, All Hallows’ women have excelled in almost every field of human endeavour— medicine, health and social science; law, commerce 2

They have performed on the national and international stages in our parliaments, the media, and elite sporting competitions such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and at the United Nations. They have lived as women of Mercy in their families, communities and religious congregations.

What will the future hold for All Hallows’ in the next 160 years? As we celebrate our history with gratitude, we embrace the future with confidence in God’s providence and continue to live our Mercy values of respect, compassion, integrity, joy, service and justice.

Mother Vincent immediately saw the need for a school to provide a Catholic education for the young women of the colony, particularly the poor. The first student, Annie Tighe, was admitted to St Stephen’s School in Charlotte Street on 15 December 1861. In November 1863, the sisters and students moved to Adderton and the School was blessed as All Hallows’.

EDUCATING WOMEN OF VISION AND MERCY

For our 160th year, a special anniversary logo has been created. The design of this logo features an elegant blue ribbon, providing a visual nod to the blue student hair ribbons, the Brisbane river that edges our School, and the timeline of our inspiring history flowing into our exciting future.

Angela O’Malley:

A Rich and Lasting Legacy At the final school assembly for 2020, the All Hallows’ community celebrated the distinguished contribution of retiring staff member, Mrs Angela O’Malley (Begley).

Angela was a student at All Hallows’ from 1969—1973 and a staff member for an outstanding 42 years. During her career, she served as Director of Mission, Head of English, teacher of Religious Education and English and, most recently, Mercy Charism Coordinator.

Principal Catherine O’Kane described Angela as a wonderful teacher, trusted advisor and inspiring role model, who always led by example, demonstrating exactly what it means to live our mercy values through her words and actions. Tributes were read from three former Principals as well as representatives of Angela’s first and final classes.

Sr Anne Hetherington recalled the time she employed Angela: ‘I saw her as someone with integrity, a social conscience and a deep faith. I knew that she would “go the extra mile” to be a great role model for the students in and beyond the classroom’.

Sr Anne O’Farrell reflected that ‘Mrs O’Malley exemplifies the life of a loving, caring, committed Christian woman and her contribution to the formation of young Mercy women at All Hallows’ has been immeasurable’.

Guard of Honour: Angela O’Malley

Dr Lee-Anne Perry AM highlighted how Angela pursued a successful career through exemplifying Mercy values: ‘She has demonstrated how you can shape your professional journey in many different ways that allow you to be stimulated and enriched while also enriching others. Irrespective of the role, Mrs O’Malley epitomised all that is Mercy—a strong, gentle, courageous woman who looked for, and drew out, the blessings in every individual’.

Past pupil Kathy Maguire (Devery), a student in Angela’s 11A class in 1979, reflected on the young Miss Begley and her role in shaping so many lives. Maia Thomas, a student in Angela’s last class, thanked her for devoting her life to embodying and sharing the spirit of mercy and for her wisdom, compassion, service and love.

Angela has left a rich and lasting legacy of Mercy through the many thousands of lives influenced over 42 years. In the words of Catherine McAuley, she has been a shining lamp, giving light to many generations of young women through their All Hallows’ journey and we will be forever grateful for her extraordinary contribution.

From the President TRON FISHER PRESIDENT – PAST PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION

It was a year of social distancing, isolation and mask wearing that could potentially have left the Past Pupils’ Association grounded like planes at the airport. Indeed, 2020 saw our regular events such as Reunions and the Annual Mass along with our regular presence of the merchandise stalls at School events all cancelled for the year.

Our inaugural ‘Connect Blue’ drinks on the Terrace, set to have launched in June, will now be an exciting addition to our 2021 calendars. However, there’s no holding a good committee down and even faced with the challenges of mostly working from home and limited resources, the wonderful group of past pupils who form our association kept very busy.

Our meetings still went ahead via Microsoft Teams and with strong collaboration there was a lot achieved.

The Publicity Working Group successfully launched our annual publication The Hallowian in digital form, giving us the opportunity to reach a wider audience and to include more content. This project received extremely positive feedback from the community. The Past Pupils’ Association also now has its own Facebook and LinkedIn pages reconnecting alumnae from all corners of the globe.

The Merchandise Working Group has been busy stocktaking and consolidating our merchandise lines—a task that has involved many working bees and hours of counting and sorting. In a year of all things being digital and online, our popular merchandise is now available to purchase through the AHS Shop, with a point of sale also available in the Uniform Shop.

Though events for 2020 were all cancelled, the Events Working Group was busy making plans for 2021. It is shaping up to be an action-packed year, with plans all in place for crowd favourites— the International Women’s Day Breakfast, Reunions and the Annual Mass and Morning Tea. Plans are also underway for a special event for our newest members—the graduates of 2020, and Connect Blue Drinks on the Terrace will launch in June.

Community spirit and friendship are typical takeaways from a student’s time at All Hallows’. As the academic year came to a close, we welcomed the Seniors of 2020 to the Past Pupils’ Association and we look forward to showing them the value of being an All Hallows’ girl beyond the gates of 547 Ann Street. In early 2021, we will host a picnic for our newest members, to touch base and hear all about life in their first year out of school.

Thank you to the School’s Leadership and Communications Teams who along with all committee members have worked together to achieve so much this year.

Principal’s Report CATHERINE O’KANE PRINCIPAL – ALL HALLOWS’ SCHOOL

There is no debating 2020 was a year of trials and surprises, so it was a joy to shift our focus to its silver linings recently as we farewelled our Year 12 girls and their families.

Chief among them, the importance of friendship and community in enduring life’s inevitable tests. I think 100-year-old Past Pupil Mary McKeering said it best in this video message for our Class of 2020, played to a delighted audience at their final school assembly in November. Her message contained many glittering gems—those timeless words of wisdom that illustrate why we place such importance on our AHSisterhood.

‘Keep in touch with the Past Pupils because, well, things are not easy in life’, Mary said. ‘You’ve got other girls who were your mates at school putting up with the same things, so it’d be a big help you’ve got somebody else besides yourself that’s carrying on. I’d certainly recommend you keep in touch with your friends.’

Our Class of 2020 has drawn strength and comfort, in equal measure, from their bonds of friendship, which served them well in navigating the unfamiliar and unknown. For the first time since 1972, Year 12 students faced the prospect of external exams and our girls did so with optimism and determination. Of course, they were well supported by the past

four years of preparatory work from our dedicated staff and the love, care and optimism of their parents and caregivers.

As the first Preps, first Year 7 high schoolers, first cohort to receive an ATAR and first in 100 years to graduate amid a global pandemic, our trailblazing Class of 2020 will long be remembered for their outstanding leadership and gratitude and their thoughtful, compassionate hearts.

Our 2020 School theme of ‘Respect Always, Love Deeply’ enlivened students, families and staff alike to finish Term 4 as a whole school community, brought closer than ever in these extraordinary times.

honours and celebrates the lives of the AHSisters who have passed away while they were students at our School.

Their fortitude shone every day and in difficult economic times, the generous support given by our community to our 2020 Whole School Project ‘Ignition Mission— Fueling Justice for Romero’ was truly heartwarming. It allowed the purchase of a new people mover for the Romero Centre—a Mercy Community ministry that provides a welcoming sanctuary for the most vulnerable and marginalised.

The new vehicle supports access to crucial services, both at Romero and other agencies, and allows staff to reach out to isolated clients—a wonderful outcome in a year when we were so keenly aware of how important it is to connect and belong. I am most appreciative of the generous donation by the Past Pupils’ Association to the whole school project in 2020.

Another 2020 highlight was the completion of the first stage of the Facilities Master Plan. Our five new science labs in Aquinas and the renovation and extension of the Tuckshop and Café 547 provide students with modern, functional spaces now and well into the future. We also now have our beautiful Magnolia Place, a sacred space for quiet reflection which

Vale Sr Monica (Mary) Nugent A life of generous service in Japan

Sr Monica (Mary) Nugent SGS died on 27 July 2020, aged 101 years. Sr Monica was one of All Hallows’ oldest past pupils, having attended the School from 1934 to 1936. Like many girls of her era, Mary studied shorthand, bookkeeping and typewriting and, after leaving All Hallows’, was employed as a steno-typist in Brisbane. Meeting some Good Samaritan Sisters changed the course of her life and she entered the Good Samaritan Novitiate at the age of 21. She trained as a teacher and taught in schools in New South Wales and Victoria from 1944 to 1949. In 1950, at the time of her perpetual profession of vows, her life changed profoundly again as she heard God’s call to go to Japan to join the Good Samaritan Sisters’ mission in Nagasaki.

Sr Monica spent most of the next 38 years ministering in Japan, where she became proficient in Japanese and specialised in teaching English and typewriting.

She completed the General Certificate Education Exam (Honours) in 1964 and Japanese Honours in 1969, both at London University. She also served as Superior of the Good Samaritan community at Nara from 1960 to 1963.

In 1988, Sr Monica returned permanently to Brisbane, where she was engaged in visitation and outreach ministries through Lourdes Hill Convent and later the Wynnum West Community. She retired to Holy Spirit Home, Carseldine in 2011. At her 100th birthday

celebration in 2019, Sr Monica spoke with love about the joys, blessings and challenges of her Japanese ministry.

Sr Monica is remembered with love both in Japan and Australia and was well known for her patience, compassion, continuous care for others, gracious smile, prayerfulness, and intelligence. May she rest in peace with God who she courageously and generously served for so many years.

Katie Duczmal A passionate tech pioneer

Katherine Jane Duczmal, better known as Katie, passed away after a short battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer on 19 March 2019.

Katie attended St Dympna’s Catholic Primary School from 1990 to 1996 and began her passion for playing the euphonium in Year 7 when a band commenced at the school. She completed high school at All Hallows’ (1997 to 2001) and was active in the orchestra, jazz ensemble and wind symphony, playing euphonium, trombone and bass guitar. In later years she played in various brass bands, adding drums to her skills. She also completed AMEB music examinations and achieved an Associate in Music (Euphonium).

Computer science was always Katie’s passion. She won the first prize for the subject Information Processing and Technology for Years 11 and 12 at All Hallows’ and she went on to complete a Bachelor of Information Technology at The University of Queensland. She won a Dean’s Commendation for High Achievement and an Australian Computer Society Prize at UQ during that time.

Katie went on to complete a Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours Class I) and was awarded a University Medal for Outstanding Scholarship. During her time at UQ, she also participated in research and tutoring.

Katie’s area of interest was information security and she worked in several companies where she was highly regarded. Her most recent position was Principal Security Consultant for the company Shearwater Solutions, which is honouring her memory by renaming an annual award after Katie, which she had dominated by winning two years in a row. In addition, a scholarship and internship program is being established in her honour. It is designed to encourage other young women to take on the demanding and rewarding field of cyber security.

Katie’s colleagues have commented that people were struck not only by her intelligence and capability, but also by her ability to be balanced, warm, articulate, thoughtful, diligent, positive, determined, insightful, and caring. Above all, she was a very kind and generous person.

Margaret Tyler

An inspirational teacher Margaret Tyler (Walsh) (Class of 1959) passed away on 19 September 2020, aged 77 years. She attended All Hallows’ for Years 11 and 12 and was also a Senior History Teacher at the School from 1966 to 1967.

Margaret was well known as the first woman from Nanango to attend university. She studied at The University of Queensland, gaining a Bachelor of Arts in History and English and a Graduate Diploma in Education, and later achieved a Masters Degree in American History.

Margaret had a passion for education and was an inspirational teacher. Throughout her career, she taught in Queensland, Canada, England, and finally in Darwin

where she achieved the level of Deputy Principal at Casuarina Senior College. Margaret returned to the beloved Nanango of her childhood in her retirement years where she remained active in the community, including the Country Women’s Association.

Margaret’s daughter, Anastasia Tyler, wrote a tribute to her mother’s life, which was published in Burnett Today.

May Margaret’s soul rest in peace.

Helena McIlwain

Her legacy of love and kindness Helena McIlwain (Class of 2017) tragically and unexpectedly passed away in late 2019. Helena was a highly functioning, healthy young woman. Helena had broken her ankle, which was the unfortunate precursor to the pulmonary embolism she suffered. Helena has left behind her parents, Fiona and Eric, her adored younger sister Sophia (current AHS student), the McIlwain and O’Shea families, and her cherished friends.

Helena is remembered as a caring and kind young woman who wanted to make a difference. She held two part-time positions—both in disability services— at BestLife and Conductive Education Queensland. In addition, Helena was studying Occupational Therapy with a view to continuing her studies towards a medical degree.

BestLife and her family are honouring Helena’s memory with the project called ‘Helena’s House’. The creation of Helena’s House will see a special and much needed place where teenagers and young people living with disabilities can take that next step to independence—living together, learning life skills, and building lifelong friendships. The house will embody Helena’s qualities of enthusiasm, kindness and humour—everything BestLife’s children love and need.

Helena’s House will be a ‘home away from home’ for BestLife’s young clients living with disability. A regular house in a regular Brisbane suburb where our young people enjoy short stays, where they build on their journey of learning life skills and live a life independent of mum, dad and family.

Helena spent every day she had making sure she was doing her part to change people’s lives. Now, Helena’s House will allow her to continue to do so, and honour the undeniable mark she made on the world in the short time she had.

Past Pupil Snippets Eugénie Buckley New netball Chair Eugénie Buckley (Class of 1988) has been appointed as the new Board Chair of Netball Queensland. Eugénie is an accomplished sports administrator, and is currently the Managing Director of Suiko Consulting, a boutique agency providing specialist advice to the sports, major events and tourism industries. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from The University of Queensland and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne.

Eugénie’s past appointments have included CEO of the 2009 ICC Women’s World Cup, Chief Operating Officer for Queensland Rugby Union, CEO of the Brisbane Roar Football Club and, most recently, Head of Commercial and Strategy for Global Rapid Rugby.

Sr Liz Wiemers Accompanying Indigenous people Sr Liz Wiemers SGS (Class of 1967) has spent the past 12 years ministering with the Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) Community of Eastern Arrernte People, 80 kilometres south-east of Alice Springs. There the church is the heart of the community for its 500 Aboriginal people, all of whom are Catholics with a strong faith life. Sr Liz’s ministry as the Parish Assistant, as well as in parish administration, has included facilitating visiting immersion groups and coordinating the Spirituality Centre and parish accommodation. She has worked with the Arrernte women at the Spirituality Centre, who create colourful artworks such as crosses, scarves and paintings, which are sold to visitors from throughout the world.

Sr Liz attributes much of her sense of the dignity and right treatment of people to her family and to her days at All Hallows’. ‘I had wonderful teachers who gave us the skills to critique in the light of our values. I developed a much wider world view.’

Sr Liz has embraced the Arrernte culture and language and sees a seamless connection between Eastern Arrernte spirituality and Catholicism. Indeed, she says that the experience of living in the Ltyentye Apurte Community has greatly enriched her faith.

Indigenous people. She grew up with Aboriginal children in Atherton; later she worked as a jillaroo on the Queensland—New South Wales border; then as a teacher and school counsellor.

Local Ltyentye Apurte couple, Kellie Mayne and Marcus Williams, say Sr Liz will be missed.

‘Sr Liz is such a good stick. She’s always available to everyone and anyone. Her door is always open. Locals often go to her for prayer, help and advice,’ says Kellie.

Marcus agrees that Sr Liz’s embrace of the Arrernte culture and her warm presence have made her a muchloved member of the community.

‘She’s a person who understands our way of life in a cultural sense,’ he says. ‘Sr Liz spent a whole lot of time creating relationships. She’s been a rock in our community.’

Sr Liz will farewell the community in January 2021. She does not know where her next ministry will take her but, with God’s grace, she prays that she will be able to continue to support Indigenous people through the Good Samaritan spirituality of compassion and love.

Caitlin Cronin Future Olympian

Past Pupil Updates

Elite rower and AHSister Caitlin Cronin (Class of 2012) is exceptionally talented. Caitlin joined Rowing Australia’s Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre in Penrith at the end of 2016, while also studying Chemical Engineering at The University of Queensland and rowing full-time. Caitlin rowed in the U23 Women’s Quadruple Scull at the World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam in 2016. In 2017, she was named in the Women’s Quadruple Scull for World Rowing Cups II and III, with her crew winning silver and bronze medals that year. In 2018, Caitlin was again selected for the Women’s Quadruple Scull. Caitlin participated in the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland in May 2020 and now has her sights set firmly on the Tokyo Olympics. Best of luck, Caitlin! We will all be cheering for you!

Phoebe O’Connell A life-changing experience Phoebe O’Connell (Class of 2017) has a changed outlook on life.

When Phoebe was 18 she contracted a near-fatal bout of the ‘Y’ strain of meningococcal disease and lost the function of both her kidneys, in addition to the ability to walk and use her hands. Over several months, Phoebe had to undertake therapy to regain her mobility, and also dialysis, which was arduous due to severe pain and her other medical complications.

Phoebe’s mother, Katy, offered to donate one of her kidneys and fortunately testing showed that she was a compatible donor. Phoebe says the transplant made her mature very quickly as she had to take responsibility for herself and not risk the wonderful gift she had been given.

Phoebe now focuses on what is most important. As Phoebe says: ‘I really appreciate how great it is to be able to do what you want without health issues’. She is so grateful for her All Hallows’ friends who have ‘always been there’ and made her believe all would be well.

‘Sometimes I look back at my 17-year-old self and I don’t recognise myself. I lost my hair and so much time but I gained so much more insight, especially into others who are struggling. I’ve seen how ill and depressed people in need of an organ can be, and I’ve seen how an organ transplant can change your life, so I’ve become a passionate volunteer for DonateLife and talk to schools about sharing my experience and the importance of organ donation. It really does change lives.’

Izzy Robinson MVP at USA College Past pupil and elite athlete Izzy Robinson (Class of 2017) has enjoyed huge successes abroad. She is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, majoring in exercise science, at Wayne State College, Nebraska in the USA. Izzy also plays rugby for the women’s team at the college and has participated in three national championship wins. In the past two years, she has been honoured as a National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) All American Player and Most Valuable Player of Nationals, and has also been selected on the U24 NSCRO team.

Hannah Belanszky Indigenous playwright and performer Hannah Belanszky (Class of 2012) is an emerging writer and actor and a Yuwaalaraay woman based in Brisbane. Hannah’s focus is on telling Aboriginal stories and creating work that is bold, imaginative and female driven.

Hannah’s play ‘don’t ask what the bird look like’ was a finalist for the 2018—19 Queensland Premier’s Drama Award and was commissioned by Queensland Theatre. She wrote and directed her cabaret ‘The Wives of Wolfgang’, which was performed at Brisbane Powerhouse in 2017 and toured to Fringe World Perth and then to Adelaide Fringe in 2020, where it was awarded Best Cabaret. Hannah’s play ‘Shadow in a Dress’ was developed through Queensland Performing Arts Centre/Playlab Theatre’s ‘Sparks’ program for First Nations writers and was programmed at La Boite HWY and Bleach Festival.

Hannah has been commissioned by Playlab Theatre to co-write a new eco-feminist work ‘Rising’, which will be performed at Metro Arts in February 2021. Hannah is also co-writer and performer in ‘Ghost Story’, a new work created by Kristen Maloney, which blends augmented reality with live performance and underwent development as part of the 2020 Metro Arts Creative Development program.

As an actor, Hannah’s credits include ‘Harrow’ and roles in television commercials for Village Retirement, Humira, Dominos and Ascent Shoes.

Excitingly, Hannah is developing a piece for All Hallows’ that has the working title ‘Heatwave’.

It will be performed by the Year 10 Drama students.

Hannah has been working with a group of students from All Hallows’ and St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace to workshop ideas for the piece. Hannah’s goal is to involve the students in the creative development process of playwriting so that they have the opportunity to participate in all stages of building the new work.

Hannah says that it has been so special to come back to All Hallows’ and work with teachers, Sue Pearn and Lydia Patterson, and the students.

Sophie Gruhl Teaching innovation Sophie Gruhl (Class of 2012), a Mabel Park State High School teacher of Science, Mathematics, Digital Technologies, and Health and Physical Education, was named winner of the 2020 Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX Excellence in Beginning to Teach Award.

Since 2019 Sophie, who is also a Netball Excellence Coach, has taken the school’s first Indigenous netball team to a tournament. She organised a second-hand shoe drive with her local gym, through which she obtained over 50 pairs of shoes for students. She also organised a Year 12 ‘Big Day Out’ in a successful attempt to increase school attendance, taught Muslim students how to float in a lake, managed a girls’ Metropolitan East Rugby League team and organised the Year 9 celebration evening.

Sophie was appointed the school’s Years 11 and 12 Coordinator from 2020 after she showed an exceptional grasp for differentiating student learning and an ability to build strong relationships with students.

Sophie is also a GEMS (Girls Excelling in Maths and Science) Leader and was appointed a Curriculum Leader for the school’s inaugural Year 9 iMPact class, in which students are provided opportunities to leverage technology. She has joined Mabel Park State High School’s Aspiring Leadership group and has led wellbeing activities and knowledge-sharing sessions for staff.

Sophie says: ‘I’ve taken little aspects from what I enjoyed about my schooling, for example, having matching team ribbons (for students’ hair) and celebrating students’ birthdays in my form class with a cake… these little things that make the kids feel special are what makes such a difference’.

Maureen Ross Scientific innovation Maureen Ross (Class of 2009) is a final year PhD student with the Biofabrication and Tissue Morphology research group at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Maureen completed a Bachelor of Medical Engineering and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours), which led her to the exciting field of medical manufacturing and tissue engineering.

Maureen’s passion for research began in 2016, when she commenced working on an Advance Queensland Knowledge Transfer Partnership between QUT and a local charity, Hear and Say. Maureen’s research aims to use new technologies such as 3D printing and 3D scanning to create low-cost, personalised healthcare treatments for a range of tissue losses and medical conditions. For her PhD, Maureen’s research has focused particularly on the area of cartilage regeneration. Her work has created new collaborations with national and international researchers, resulting in a two-month laboratory stay in Dresden, Germany, in late 2019.

Outside of her research, Maureen has a passion for science communication and community engagement, which has led her to present at local and international conferences and run showcases of her work at public events. She has been heavily involved in mentorship, inspiring young minds through QUT’s Vice Chancellor’s STEM camp, QUT’s High School Internships and direct outreach programs with local high schools.

Maureen has been recognised as a leading young female researcher in Queensland and was one of three finalists in the 2020 Women in Technology Awards for the Young Achiever in Science category.

Lileana Colarelli Dr Lee-Anne Perry award winner Lileana Colarelli (Class of 2018) is the 2020 recipient of the Dr Lee-Anne Perry AM Leadership and Service Award. Lileana is currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Law at the University of New South Wales, and will use funds from the Award to provide water infrastructure and education in Cadulawan, a village in the Filipino province of Cebu, as part of a project for her university college, Creston College.

Since finishing school, Lileana has been involved in a wide range of social justice activities and is a most deserving recipient. Congratulations, Lileana, we look forward to hearing more about this hugely important project.

Past Pupils’ Liturgy:

Keeping us connected during COVID-19 We experienced so many cancellations in 2020, including all our scheduled reunions of the ‘0’ year cohorts, and our Annual Past Pupils’ Mass and Morning Tea. We were able to keep connected however with our inaugural online Past Pupils’ Liturgy, which combined a much-loved version of Angeli performed by the Senior Choir, a beautiful reflection by Angela O’Malley and a video version of Prayers of the Faithful, contributed by Past Pupils of all ages, from all parts of the world. It proved a touching and comforting reminder that no matter how far away we are, we are all still connected by our shared All Hallows’ history.

Changes, events and date claimers We are currently planning new and re-imagined events for 2021. These remain subject to any potential future health restrictions.

The most significant change is that Reunions with an onsite component will be held on 2 designated days only – mid-year on Saturday May 22 and our traditional Annual Mass day, on Saturday October 30. This change is due to a major construction project in 2021, and the need to rationalise the imposition on facilities and staff out of hours.

Reunion organisers/committees for 2021 or 2020 reunion groups who wish to gather in 2021 are encouraged to choose their preferred date (May 22 or October 30) and contact the Past Pupils’ Liaison as soon as possible, by emailing ppa@ahs.qld.edu.au.

community is warmly welcomed to celebrate our past, present and future.

Since 1997, the Foundation has played an important role in the development of our campus and community. In the last year, the Foundation donated $200,000 towards the Aquinas Project and Magnolia Place, bringing the total contribution to $4.4 million since 2001.

The priorities of the Foundation continue to involve our community in partnership, to attract funds and to invest wisely so we can provide the facilities and environment for our All Hallows’ Sisters to flourish. A sincere and heartfelt thanks go to our Foundation Board for their wise counsel and management of such an important investment.

We thank our outgoing Board Members, Mr Paul Lindstrom, Mr Brian Kilmartin, Mrs Noela McMullen, Mr James Baxter and outgoing Chair, Mrs Bernadette Egan for their

dedication and leadership over many years. We also thank and acknowledge the tremendous work of Ms Lenore Thompson who after an outstanding 23 years as Foundation Office Manager, has decided to retire. We wish Lenore all the very best and we look forward to welcoming you all back on campus in the future.

We also thank our continuing Foundation Board Members, Mr Matt Bell and Ms Phoebe Wowor, and our new Board Chair, Ms Ann-Maree David, as we welcome incoming members for 2021, Ms Mary Macuga, Ms Jemima Welsh

2020 was certainly a challenging year for many and the All Hallows’ community is not immune to the uncertainty and disappointments that a global pandemic can deliver. Now, more than ever, the support of our community through the Foundation is welcomed, appreciated and invested wisely to create maximum impact.

2021 will bring new opportunities for our past pupils to play a valuable role in the development of the School through the Foundation.
