Centenarians remember All Hallows’with love

Lola was an All Hallows’ pupil from 1935—1937 and excelled as a member of the interschool tennis doubles team, while enjoying studies in music, maths, shorthand, typing and bookkeeping.

Mary attended All Hallows’ from 1934—1935 and studied shorthand, typing and bookkeeping. One of her enduring memories was the kindness of her teachers and staff, one of whom took her aside one day when she was feeling unwell for a sneaky hot chocolate and piece of bun!

In the days when Mary and Lola were All Hallows’ students, Sister Mary Loretto was the Sister in Charge and well-known Brisbane artist William Bustard was teaching art at the School.

At a time when the world was in the grip of the Great Depression and in the lead-up to the Second World War, the gift of a good education was unavailable to many young people and particularly women.

The All Hallows’ community was honoured to welcome two inspiring 100-year-old past pupils, Mrs Lola Johnson (née Prout, above left) and Ms Mary McKeering (above right), back to the School to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020.

They reflected on the ‘big school’ of 550 students assembling in the current Catherine Court, during the era which saw the construction of the Story Bridge.

Lola and Mary shared some of their fondest memories of their time at All Hallows’ through a video presentation at the School assembly. They greatly valued the blessings of an All Hallows’ education and believed that the School influenced the person they became throughout their lives. Mary and Lola maintained enduring connections with All Hallows’ through lifelong friendships and family members who became All Hallows’ girls themselves. In fact, four of Mary’s great-grandnieces currently attend the School!

Both Lola and Mary were presented with brand new All Hallows’ badges by the School’s youngest Year 5 students, Natalie Chung and Allegra Cavallucci, before being clapped as they left the assembly, a tradition usually reserved for new students and graduating Seniors.

be working closely with the School and drawing on the skills and experience of our hard-working committee members to facilitate our project goals for 2020.

From the President TRON FISHER PRESIDENT – PAST PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION

We have certainly had to navigate some rough terrain over the past few months and I hope that you and your families have managed to survive the restrictions placed on us as a community and have endured the changes to our everyday routines, finding ways of living more simply.

2019 marked the end of an era as Lenore Thompson stood aside as Past Pupils’ Liaison. I speak for many when I thank Lenore for the commitment and passion she has demonstrated in this role and I wish her continued blessings as she maintains her position as Foundation Manager. 2020 introduces our new Past Pupils’ Liaison, Maree Nugent. Maree is also tremendously committed to and passionate about All Hallows’.

As a past pupil herself, her sister, daughters and nieces are also all past or present students, and so her connection runs deep. We

welcome Maree to the team and look forward to working with her as our conduit to the School.

As always, our 2019 Annual Past Pupils’ Mass and Morning Tea was well attended and was also a celebration of 50, 60 and 70year reunions. It is always a joy to see our past pupils reconnecting, whether it be after many years or 12 months, and across generations.

Thank you to everyone who was involved with the success of this event, including our celebrant Fr Gerard McMorrow.

Congratulations also to the classes of 1949, 1959, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2009 who acknowledged milestone years in 2019.

This year the committee has adopted a new approach and has branched into three working groups, focusing on Hospitality and Events, Memorabilia, and Publicity and Publications. We will

The Hospitality and Events Team has preparations underway for the Past Pupils’ Association’s International Women’s Day Breakfast 2021 and hopefully society will be on track in time for our Annual Mass in October 2020.

Details of these functions will be cascaded later in the year.

This year the Association had planned to launch a new event in June called ‘Connect Blue’. The intention was to host evening drinks and canapés on the Terrace, providing a social link for alumni.

Unfortunately, the event will not proceed this year, but we are excited about presenting it to you in the future.

Our Memorabilia Team has been busy stocktaking and condensing our current lines. The vision for this area is to streamline our product lines and aim to have an online store in the future. At this stage, if you would like to purchase any items, please contact our Past Pupils’ Liaison, Maree Nugent ppa@ahs.qld.edu.au.

Steering us through the twentyfirst century, the Publicity and Publications Team is focusing on the Association’s online presence and digitalising our publications.

I would encourage you to please update your details here, preferably with a personal or home email address, so that as we evolve to digital communications we will be able to keep you well informed.

Looking to the future, the committee would like to develop a link between past and present students by way of a career mentoring program. Also, developing a goods and services register to endorse and promote past pupils’ businesses has been proposed and as we receive more updates for our database, this idea will develop further.

In the past year, funds raised through events and memorabilia sales have been donated towards the All Hallows’ Foundation, Catherine McAuley Bursary Fund, 2019 Whole School Project— Building Bingavia, Mercy Works and Sr Mary Ronan Fund. In January 2020, we made a special contribution to ‘Magnolia Place’, a newly created garden space adjacent to the convent. This area will incorporate plants, water features and mosaic work made up of pieces of patterned china from broken teacups from the Mothers’ Network’s collection. It has been designed to create a tranquil spot for reflection and remembrance.

Thank you to Principal Catherine O’Kane and the School’s Leadership, Administration and Facilities teams for their continued support and assistance throughout the year and a very special thank you to our wonderful committee members for their ongoing collaboration and commitment.

In these uncertain times, I ask you to reflect on the 2020 School Theme, ‘Respect Always, Love Deeply’. From this we can endeavour to respect ourselves, our loved ones, our community and our environment and from this respect comes love.

Principal’s Report CATHERINE O’KANE PRINCIPAL – ALL HALLOWS’ SCHOOL

2019 provided many opportunities for us to celebrate and grow in faith and love, as individuals and as a community. Our 2019 School Theme, ‘Journey with Courage and Compassion’, challenged us to step outside ou’rselves and into a closer connection with each other. In a year in which we celebrated 200 years since the birth of the founder of our School, Mother Vincent Whitty, we drew inspiration from her journey of courage and compassion to Australia from Ireland in 1861.

in raising funds for renovations and improvements at Mercy Secondary School in Yarapos, East Sepik Province, PNG, founded by the Brisbane Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in 1963. Today, the school educates over 700 determined young women, 600 of whom are boarders because a daily journey home is impossible.

Courage and compassion found their way into our 2019 School Captains’ Spirit Theme, #handinhand. Our students wholeheartedly embraced the concept of journeying ‘in partnership’, ‘together’ and ‘side-

by-side’ throughout the year, under the exemplary leadership of 2019 School Captains Ella Proberts and Abby Wellington.

Academically, the Class of 2019 achieved exceptional results. 95% of our eligible students received an OP1—15, 75% were in the OP1—10 category, 38% with an OP1—5 and the median OP score was 7. I thank and congratulate the teachers, support staff and parents who mentored these young women on their journey and pray for the ongoing health, happiness and success of our newest past pupils.

As five new science labs in Aquinas building and the extensive Tuckshop renovation reach completion, work continues on redevelopment designs for the Potter Building to incorporate the Library, Makerspace, Blue Chip and our Sports Department, with work expected to commence in Term 4, 2020.

Our students wholeheartedly embraced the concept of journeying ‘in partnership’, ‘together’ and ‘side-by-side’ throughout the year.

While our focus was squarely on the needs of the Class of 2019, our talented educators and professional staff worked diligently to prepare for the new Queensland Certificate of Education system of senior assessment, when our Class of 2020 will be the first cohort to achieve an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Work on our Facilities Master Plan was reimagined to factor in the recent acquisition of 501 Ann Street, and we now have a blueprint to improve and expand facilities for current and future students. The new reflection

For over 150 years, Adderton has been an important part of the social and ecclesial fabric of Brisbane and Queensland, first as the home of the Fullerton family and then as the All Hallows’ Convent, the foundation house of the Sisters of Mercy Brisbane Congregation. Now, as Adderton: house & heart of mercy, it has been transformed into an amazing multi-use exhibition, art and reflection space which will nurture the spirit and inspire creativity.

We congratulate the Sisters of Mercy on the completion of this important project in August 2019.

I make special mention of Past Pupils’ Liaison, Lenore Thompson, who decided to step down from the role at the end of 2019. For 22 years, Lenore has worked tirelessly to foster enduring connections and a sense of community between past pupils and our School. We are fortunate that we will not lose her talents, as she continues in a part-time role as Foundation Office Manager. I am delighted to welcome past pupil (Class of 1977) Maree Nugent as our new full-time Past Pupils’ Liaison and I know that Maree is looking forward to working with our Past Pupils’ Association and creating new opportunities for past pupils of all ages to connect with our School.

We are blessed to have the support of a dynamic Past Pupils’

Association which unites and reconnects us through reunions and special events, such as the International Women’s Day breakfast. Each year, I have the privilege of meeting past pupils from across the generations and I am always struck by the fond memories they have of their time at All Hallows’, the strength of their connections to each other and the School, and how All Hallows’ values continue to influence their lives.

At the Assembly of Catholic Professionals’ luncheon in July 2019, the guest speaker was Samantha Cohen (Class of 1985) who worked for almost two decades in the private office of Buckingham Palace, eventually as Assistant Private Secretary to the Queen. Samantha fondly recalled drawing early inspiration from her All Hallows’ teachers, who were mostly Sisters of Mercy, and how they were such strong women and powerful role models for her in life.

During the year I was also thrilled to accompany 97-year-old past pupil, Bernice Malouf (Class of 1939), on a wonderful trip down memory lane as she visited our School. Now Sydney-based, Bernice who boarded from 1935 to 1939, recalled one of her fondest memories of her time at All Hallows’ was studying art in The Studio with William Bustard as her art teacher—we are fortunate to have three of his renowned watercolours hanging in prominent positions in the School today.

It is lifelong connections such as these that make All Hallows’ such a special community and pay tribute to the legacy created by Mother Whitty almost 160 years ago.

Reunions in 2019 10 Year Reunion CHLOE DAWSON On Saturday, 16 November 2019, the All Hallows’ Class of 2009 celebrated our 10-year reunion at The Alliance Hotel in Spring Hill.

Our celebration included former students who travelled from interstate and internationally for the reunion, with 62 AHS graduates attending on the day.

It was great to see everyone ‘10 years later’.

The feedback from the day was that everyone was still the same as when we were in high school. The girls reminisced about the Jumpin’ Jive days on the Terrace and also had some trivia questions based on our school days.

We look forward to the next Class of 2009 reunion.

20 Year Reunion ELANI GREENAWAY

On Saturday, 7 December 2019, over 55 ladies from the Class of 1999 reunited for Mass celebrated by Fr Eric Alleaume OMI in All Hallows’ Chapel. Mass was a joyful occasion; the highlight was the singing of ‘Angeli’, which brought back many memories for all. Mrs Catherine O’Kane gave a moving speech before we embarked on a tour of our alma mater. The AHS sisters of ’99 were delighted to see many changes. Our old pool area was nowhere to be seen; instead replaced with the stateof-the-art Concilio Aquatic Centre. Most ladies stopped for a spot of shopping, stocking up on AHS memorabilia including tea towels, stationery and wine glasses.

The afternoon was spent at nearby Howard Smith Wharves and included lunch and a joyful ‘walk down memory lane’, where we reconnected with the young women who had shaped our teenage years. Thanks to our organising committee, Dominque Harvey and Anna Caton, for bringing together the AHS Class of 1999, in what was a very memorable 20-year reunion.

It is certainly true as the adage goes ‘Once an All Hallows’ girl, always an All Hallows’ girl’.

30 Year Reunion KELLY CLEARY

On Saturday, 14 September 2019, the Class of 1989 celebrated our 30-year reunion. What a wonderful event with more than 100 classmates attending from all over Australia, and several flying in from London, Switzerland and Houston. To have so many of our cohort back together in one place was special—you could feel the excitement in the air!

The day started with a beautiful Mass in the All Hallows’ Chapel celebrated by Monsignor Peter Meneely, with Sr Chris Watt playing the organ and our classmate Sarah Crane leading our choir. Miss Liddy (who taught us in 1989) welcomed us to the reunion Mass and recounted many fun facts from when we were at school. Whilst sitting in the Chapel with our classmates, so many precious memories of school came flooding back.

After Mass, we headed to the Terrace to have a professional photo taken of our group. We then converged on the Queens Arms Hotel for a fabulous afternoon of drinks, dinner, videos, speeches and

reconnecting with our classmates, some of whom we hadn’t seen in 30 years!

A big ‘thank you’ to our School Captain, Bernadette Dutton and our Vice Captain, Carmel Howard, along with our fabulous reunion committee, who helped make the reunion an event to remember, including Megan Smythe; Kellie Drew; Anna Harding; Deanna Wong; Britt Pradella; Kelly Cleary; Siobhan Bickle; Jenny Caro; Lucette Thompson; Jenny Wells; Lucy Harding; Judy Horan; Judy Hishon and Annie Dercole.

The reunion reminded us all what an incredible school All Hallows’ is, providing us with such a supportive and nurturing environment to learn and grow and the opportunity to meet lifelong friends.

It was wonderful to catch up with our classmates, and we can’t wait for the next reunion!

40 Year Reunion BERNADET TE DIXON

On 17 August 2019, over 70 ladies from Year 12 1979 and Year 11F 1978 were welcomed back to the School by Mrs Catherine O’Kane. We were joined by our Principal, Sr Anne Hetherington rsm, Mr Allan Cameron, the homeroom teacher of our class 12B and Mr Brian Charlton, our maths master who travelled from Sydney. We were also fortunate to have with us Mrs Lorraine Martin, and her son Peter who had travelled from Sydney, to help us remember our friend Jeannie, their daughter and sister.

Accompanying Mrs Martin was Mrs Diane Andrews, whose daughters are past pupils and whose son Craig was a contemporary of ours.

After a tour of the School, we celebrated a Mass led by Bishop Joseph Oudeman OFM Cap. We were able to draw on the considerable talents of our cohort for the music, both organ and violin solo, and the singing, even forming a choir to lead the hymns. Several memorable photo opportunities later, we walked to Catherine Court where we shared a meal, enjoyed a few cool beverages and exchanged stories well into the night. A photo booth was set up with some uniforms from our school years as props. The uniforms appeared a little tighter than most remembered but they brought back so many memories.

Several ladies travelled from regional Queensland, interstate and even Singapore and Washington, DC and

we thank them for making the effort. Your presence added to the success of the night.

The reunion was a very relaxed and happy event.

Friendships were reignited and arrangements to meet up again were made. Happily, many follow-up gatherings have already occurred and continue to be organised.

Before the reunion, a private Facebook group was created and many photos and stories from our school years and the reunion have been shared. We also have a Messenger group and through these social media platforms have been able to continue to enjoy our friendships. If any of our year group would like to join us in these forums you can contact me.

I wish to thank Lenore Thompson of the Past Pupils’ Committee for listening to all our plans and helping make them a reality. To my fellow organisers, Boo Brett (née Pearson) and Nicola Godfrey (née Donoghue), thank you for your unwavering help and constant enthusiasm.

50 Year Reunion TERRY FENNER

On 26 October 2019, 50 ‘OLD GIRLS’ met for the Annual Mass and Morning Tea, to be followed by a get-together at Mantra on Queen. It was special to walk into the Chapel after so many years and the singing of the School song was, as they say, PRICELESS. It is true that ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’.

Some shared thoughts of our ladies on the day: Joan Hanley—Catching up after 50 years was a good experience. Lots of fun.

Claudia Ukalovic—I felt very happy to see everybody.

Stella Rush—The 50 years melted away and the AHS girls were back! Very special!

Stephanie FitzGerald—The best and amazing thing was we all chatted like it was just a few years not 50! Loved sharing our lives and experiences. Fabulous!

Dianne Russ—What a wonderful day it was! Fabulous to catch up with so many old friends.

Erica Tomkins—A day never to be forgotten! What we all have in common are those experiences of all those years ago that we don’t need to explain! They are a given that

we remember exactly as they occurred! And our shared language that also does not need explanation!

Paula Tewksbury—The whole thing was great, no expectations; the Chapel made me feel special to be part of such a strong and loving community. The morning tea was special because we are part of such a long history of girls; the reception after was perfect as we are old enough to have lost being self-conscious and could be school friends again.

60 Year Reunion We had 40 of our 1959 Senior Class return to All Hallows’ School for our 60th reunion. This event was held as part of the Annual Past Pupils’ Mass and Morning Tea. An enjoyable morning was had by all, reconnecting, laughing and sharing stories. Thank you to Rosie Russell and Diane Josephson for coordinating this wonderful event.

70 Year Reunion CATHARINE COURTNEY RSM

Thanks to the Past Pupils’ Association for being wonderful hosts and to Lenore Thompson’s superb organising, six of us from the Class of 1949 proved to be more than mere survivors from our first-ever reunion 20 years ago! Ignoring the changes in hair colour and the occasional wheelie walker, appropriate to us having arrived around 87 years of age, the catch up was enlivening and enjoyable. Considering that it was arranged with little advertising and largely by word of mouth, we also had eleven apologies. Sadly, we remembered many deaths from former reunions. These statistics hardly touch on the 200 of us who spent 1946 and 1947 at All Hallows’ and the 23 who did Senior in 1949—little knowing of the life changes ahead.

onwards. Yes, we had the Concert Hall and tiny Science Rooms, and the ‘bird bath’ for swimming but no library, no language laboratories, no Science block or gym!

However, we can count amongst us, graduates who have done the School proud and who have raised two more generations of valiant women.

No! We are not planning our 80th reunion. Better to hang on to the belief that one day we will all be reunited in another world beyond planning and beyond our imagining!

Sydney Reunion JANE MILLER

For the sixth consecutive year, All Hallows’ past pupils living in Sydney gathered for a night of networking and connection.

The conversation flowed as we shared memories and made new connections through our professional careers and personal lives.

Held on 18 October 2019, the group convened at CBD restaurant Secolo Dining.

Our oldest guest, Bernice Aboud, once again proved that age is no barrier to getting out and maintaining social connection. Still spritely at the age of ninety-something, she is a true inspiration.

We were again joined by Lenore Thompson, Past Pupils’ Liaison, who despite the distance, is always a warm and familiar face at this event.

Lenore Thompson: Lighting the Way for Past Pupils

Lenore’s connection with All Hallows’ School began over 60 years ago in 1959 when she commenced her studies as a boarder, and later as a ‘day girl’.

Lenore joined the Association following completion of her schooling in 1964 and for the past 22 years, she held the busy roles of Past Pupils’ Liaison as well as Foundation Office Manager, both on a part-time basis.

Lenore’s enduring love for All Hallows’ and the past pupil community inspired her to work with great dedication to fulfil the aims of the Association. She has been the constant voice and face of the Association, greeting and advising generations of past pupils, representing the Association within the School and wider community and providing sage guidance and practical support to the succession of past pupils’ committees. Lenore is guided by her strong Christian faith and is always ready to offer a listening ear, personal kindness, care and friendship to those she meets. Her quiet, self-effacing outward manner is complemented by her inner strength and devotion to people and issues close to her heart.

As Catherine O’Kane said during her address at the Association’s Biennial General Meeting: ‘Perhaps unsurprisingly, the meaning of the name Lenore is “light, torch, bright”. Clearly, it was your destiny, Lenore, to be a beacon for the All Hallows’ community, lighting the way home for all those who have passed through our gates.’

In late 2019, Lenore decided to resign from the role of Past Pupils’ Liaison, while continuing as Foundation Office Manager, to enjoy a greater work-life balance.

We are delighted that she has agreed to remain as a member of the Association’s Committee so that we can continue to draw on her wisdom and enjoy her friendship. We wish Lenore abundant blessings for the future.

COVID-19 restrictions may have kept us quiet in 2020, but we plan to return in bigger and better voice in 2021.

A note from Lenore:

In Grateful Appreciation To begin from my first day would be impossible, but I would like to say that I have totally enjoyed working as School Liaison for the past pupils. It has been very rewarding for me, and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many of our ladies. To the Presidents and committee members over the last 23 years, my sincere thanks for their never-ending support during this time.

In 2025, the Past Pupils’ Association will mark its centenary, and I wish them well as they prepare for this significant milestone.

I am also incredibly grateful to Sr Anne O’Farrell, Dr Lee-Anne Perry and Mrs Catherine O’Kane for allowing me the opportunity to pursue this journey. When I asked Catherine if I could reduce my hours by dividing my duties she was most gracious, but said the decision as to which role I continued to work in was mine. I must say it was one of the most difficult decisions in my working career. I opted to keep my position with the Foundation as I was employed in that role initially.

Introducing

Magnolia Place: A Place for Reflection and Remembrance

A new and special part of the School is Magnolia Place, an area on the Kemp Place side of Adderton, which the Sisters of Mercy have generously allowed to be transformed into a contemplation space and garden.

Part of the purpose of Magnolia Place is also to acknowledge and honour those girls in our community who passed away while they were students at All Hallows’. Plinths within the garden feature plaques with their names.

Magnolia Place is a beautiful expression of light, texture, landscape and natural elements. Within the space, there are quiet spots to sit, paths to wander and touchpoints on which to think and focus. The garden tells a lovely story of connection and continuity—so poignant to us as past pupils.

Mosaic sculptures created from old teacups from the Mothers’ Network’s collection are a special feature.

The Past Pupils’ Association was pleased to make a financial contribution to the Magnolia Place project, and you are encouraged to take a moment to enjoy its gentle beauty next time you visit the School.

La Toussaint: Our School Anthem CATHY CLEM SCHOOL ARCHIVIST

What is La Toussaint? La Toussaint means All Saints in French. As a title, La Toussaint is used for a Latin intercessory text from the Prayer of the Church for the feast of All Saints set to music.

All Saints’ Day is celebrated on 1 November and known as All Hallows’ Day, which our School celebrates as its name day.

So, it seems fitting that the hymn La Toussaint was adopted as the school anthem.

Sister M Claver Mullany, Assistant to the Reverend Mother during the years 1892–1895 and 1907–10, was the central figure in the musical life of the School. She shared her love of French literature with students and perhaps it was she who introduced the French hymn to

the School (Dieu et Devoir page 71). It can be found in Sister Claver’s hymn book which is held in the School Archives. While the music could be by a French composer, there is no research to prove or disprove the idea.

This prayer seems to have been adopted by the School for most of the School’s history as its School Anthem.

The Sisters of Mercy and past pupils remember fondly the singing of the School Anthem at Mass and on special occasions. It is written in the history of All Hallows’ School, Dieu et Devoir, that this hymn was sung by the Sisters of Mercy at

Mass celebrated in the Chapel in early years. There are many other references to the singing of the La Toussaint hymn on All Saints’ Day found in the School Magazines published since 1933. The 1939 School Magazine, which included the School Jottings diaries, refers to Choir singing La Toussaint and the 1940 Magazine mentions the boarders leading the singing after Benediction on All Hallows’ Day. In the 1950s, the boarders’ choir and not the Sisters’ choir led the singing at the morning Mass on 1 November. By 1944 the students were singing their Angeli for Peace at the Naval Depot and in 1946 the magazine stated Angeli Archangeli was ushering in another All Hallows’ Day. So, it was around this time that the pupils began referring to their School Song as Angeli, being the first word of the hymn. Sister Margaret Quane, a boarder at All Hallows’ in 1953, remembers singing the Angeli and it being referred to as the School Anthem.

Current teacher and past pupil, Ms Marion Horan remembers being in Year 8 in 1967 and the Sisters of Mercy coming to her classroom to teach this hymn. In these lessons the hymn was official referred to as the School Song. The 1993 School Captain, Sarah McGarry, made a request to the Principal, Sister Anne O’Farrell, that the Angeli be sung at all School assemblies. Her reasons were that by the end of

SR Regis Mary Dunne RSM AO: A Modern Pioneer

Sr Regis Mary entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1946. She commenced training as a medical laboratory scientist at the Mater Public Hospital, South Brisbane in 1949, completing a Diploma in Medical Technology. She became a leader in the field of cytogenetics (the study of the number and structure of chromosomes in cells) and was the first to introduce this study into a laboratory.

In 1962, she co-established Australia’s first genetic counselling clinic. While working as a Cytogeneticist, she lectured for many years at The University of Queensland. In 1981, she was appointed the inaugural Director of the Queensland Bioethics Centre and from 1995 to 1999 she was a consultant for the Mater Medical Research Institute and the Mater Hospital. Sr Regis Mary’s academic achievements also included a Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Medical

Laboratory Technology and a Diploma in Theology. She studied in the United States, including bioethics at Georgetown University and Saint Louis University and moral theology at Loyola University Chicago.

In 2007, Sr Regis Mary was recognised as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). During her eminent career, she received many awards, including an Honorary Doctorate from the Queensland University of Technology, a Medal for Outstanding Service from Griffith University, a Fellowship of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and a National Health and Medical Research Council Outstanding Contribution Award.

Sr Regis Mary was well known for her life of Mercy and her qualities of gentleness, care, friendship and humility.

Sr Regis Mary served on numerous state and national boards and committees relating to medical research and ethics. Many tributes have been written to honour Sr Regis Mary’s life, including the Mater’s eulogy which is available online.

May she now enjoy everlasting freedom with the God of Mercy.

Past Pupil Snippets Tara O’Kane – Angel of Mercy Tara O’Kane (Class of 2013) has demonstrated true Mercy values in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After recently completing a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Queensland, Tara, together with co-founder Julian Corvin established Shopping Angels Australia in March 2020. Working from the Gold Coast, Tara and Julian connect people impacted by COVID-19 with volunteer ‘angels’ offering to do essential shopping.

Tara said: ‘It has been an amazing experience helping the community in a time of need. It really makes my day seeing how grateful the clients are that we are providing assistance. I can’t wait to see what happens next for Shopping Angels AUS’.

Clare Stewart Elected First Female Mayor of Noosa Clare Stewart (née Sultmann, Class of 1994) was recently elected mayor of Noosa Shire Council, the first woman in 115 years. Family, friends and supporters have posed the question: ‘How do you feel about the new role and being elected the first female mayor of Noosa Shire?’

For Clare: ‘The answer combines multiple thoughts and feelings; most of which focus on the privilege and the responsibility that the people of the Shire have shown me; and, importantly, my deep appreciation for those who supported the campaign in operational terms, through the ballot box, and across my formative years. Family, Friends, Faith, Service, Relationship, Transparency, Connection, Presence, Accountability, Vulnerability and Perseverance characterised my electoral pledge: values forged over four decades.

All Hallows’ was so much a part of my development and now the deeply entrenched values serve as a mirror on engagement; a compass for collaboration and deliberations.

If there was any advice to students of today, it would be “Don’t miss the experience; enjoy, and take it all in; the lessons will inform the immediate and the future—they are all invaluable”’.

Congratulations to Valerie Dawson (née Tuson, AHS 1948—1949) who has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to the performing arts as a singer and songwriter.

Valerie’s works document some of Australia’s most significant social, historical and sporting moments. After receiving her OAM, Valerie wrote to us expressing her lifelong gratitude for the Legacy scholarship which enabled her to attend All Hallows’ and said ‘I would like to say that I owe my Award in part to the excellent education and interest in music, singing, poetry and writing nurtured in me by the wonderful and caring Sisters of Mercy….at All Hallows’.

Kayla Coombs Gains Worldwide Attention Dux of All Hallows 2011 and Melbourne-based scientist-turned-illustrator Kayla Coombs created an animated wedding proposal which garnered worldwide attention when it received tens of millions of online hits in just a few days. Kayla took six months to rework the characters of Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming into real-life sweethearts Lee Loechler and Sthuthi David. At a theatre screening of the movie packed with

friends and relatives, the real Prince came to life when Lee got down on one knee and proposed to a very surprised Sthuthi—who immediately said ‘Yes’!

Cecile Falvey OAM – Weaving Her Way To Heaven Cecile Falvey (Class of 1948) is at her loom in her studio in Tamborine Mountain almost every day.

Her Catholic faith is intricately woven into many of the wonderful creations she has produced and its thread runs through her recently published book Happiness is weaving every day : Cecile Falvey : 50 years of a weaver’s life 1969— 2019.

Cecile was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2007 for service to the textile sector through a range of professional associations and as an educator. Despite already working on her next exhibition, when the time comes she is counting on taking her loom ‘upstairs’ with her as she’d be lost without it!

Further Recognition for Sarah Ryan Dux 2019 The Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority’s annual Queensland Certificate of Education Achievement Awards recognise outstanding academic achievement based on a student’s achievement in school subjects, Queensland Core Skills Test, additional studies at a tertiary level and areas such as performing arts.

We congratulate Sarah Ryan (Class of 2019) on receiving a Distinguished Academic Achiever award, placing her in the top 31 graduates in Queensland in 2019. Sarah is currently studying a Bachelor of Science (MD Provisional Entry for School-Leavers) at The University of Queensland.

Margot de Groot awarded AM Margot de Groot (McKellar, Class of 1977) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division of the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours List for significant service to the law, to professional legal bodies, and to women in business.

Margot is a Director of de Groots wills & estate lawyers, which she established in 1986. She was admitted as a solicitor in 1983 and completed a Business Management Program at the Harvard Business School during 2004–2006. She is also a Notary Public and was a finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s Awards in 2004.

Margot founded the Queensland branch of the international Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and was a founding member of the Queensland Law Society’s Succession Law Committee. She has served as Chairman of Law Australasia and held directorships with the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Trust, the Queensland Law Foundation and Energex Retail Pty Ltd. After undertaking studies at the New York Flower School, Margot opened Flowers on Tedder at the Gold Coast in late 2016, and in 2017, 2018 and 2019 it was voted the best florist shop on the Gold Coast in a competition sponsored by the Gold Coast Bulletin. At the same time, Margot was elected Queensland President of Women Chiefs of Enterprises International (WCEI), having been a member of that organisation since 2004. In late 2017, she was elected as the National President of WCEI and served in that capacity until October 2019.

Adriana Basiaco – Past Pupil With a Focus on the Past Adriana Basiaco (Class of 2008) achieved the award of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Archaeology from The University of Queensland on 24 June 2019. Previously she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts with first class honours in the field of Archaeology. She will soon begin postdoctoral research. What a wonderful achievement, Dr Basiaco!

Averyl Mitchell – Kicking Goals and Living the Dream Averyl Mitchell (School Captain, Class of 2012) describes her selection in the Australian Wallaroos Rugby Team as ‘the best moment of my life’. She sees being asked to represent her country as a great privilege—one she is unbelievably grateful for. Averyl’s rise to international representative honours came after a late start in the sport—she only stumbled on women’s rugby when she walked past a training session at The University of Queensland. She sees her journey as a great example of the fact that you can be ‘any shape, any size, from any background, but if you want it and you’re willing to learn, you can do it’.

Dr Cath O’Shea – First Australian Dentist to Work at the South Pole Cath O’Shea (Class of 1996) spent many years abroad in Scotland, New Zealand and Canada studying to become a specialist Orthodontist, focusing particularly on the treatment of children and young adults.

Before settling permanently back in Brisbane, Cath was season Dentist for the United States Antarctic Program, stationed at McMurdo Station in Antarctica, with the added career highlight of visiting the South Pole Station.

She is now in private practice at Ethos Orthodontics alongside her friend and colleague, Dr Kate Barker, also a 1996 AHS graduate!

Mercy Works

helping the poor throughout the pandemic Catherine McAuley is well known for stating ‘The poor need help today, not next week’. This could not be more true than in today’s world of the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath.

Mercy Works has responded swiftly to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on vulnerable communities in Australia and Papua New Guinea, focussing resources on giving a ‘hand up’ to those among the hardest hit.

clean water. Their situation is acute because the closure of the nearby markets has deprived them of their normal source of food and drinking water.

These struggling families are being provided with bowls in which they can transport water back to their houses from wells a good distance away. These bowls, along with soap supplied, are also used for hand washing, to improve hygiene. In addition, seeds and basic gardening tools are being distributed so the families can grow food in the small area around their make-shift houses.

In Australia, the Mercy Connect refugee and asylum seeker student mentoring program was curtailed during the school lockdown, with only a small number of students being able to be supported by their mentor remotely.

Many asylum seeker and refugee children have found home schooling even more challenging than most others because of the particular barriers to learning which they face. This means they have found it more difficult to cope and have fallen further behind.

Mentoring of these disadvantaged students is needed now more than ever.

The Past Pupils’ Association has been most generous in their longterm support of Mercy Works’ projects. Most recently, in 2019, PPA contributed to Building Bingavia, the Whole School Project for the renovation of boarding facilities at the Mercy Secondary School in Yarapos.

An opportunity to be part of our Inaugural Mass in our

160th year

In 2021, the All Hallows’ Inaugural Mass will not only be a celebration to mark the beginning of the new school year, but also a celebration to mark the milestone of 160 years since the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy who were inspired and determined to build a school dedicated to the ‘careful instruction of women’.

Next year’s Mass will feature a special procession to commemorate this rich heritage and will be made up of representatives of each decade of our 160 years.
