In this moment, the world is changing. It’s aligning with who we believe we are and what we believe is possible for a better tomorrow.

Now more than ever, I hope you feel proud to be a part of the Nassau County AHRC Foundation and its important work supporting children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.

The sincerity and rightness of our mission is a beacon, blessed by the hard work and faith of the generations of families, friends and leaders who came before us. They, too, experienced hardship and uncertainty, yet forged a path for services so that children and adults with developmental disabilities could lead meaningful lives. They insisted, informed and inspired at a time when disability was hidden away or ignored.

Now, 70 years later, we honor their work by building on it and continuing the tradition of the annual Rose Ball. This event has always been a way to celebrate the successes that have been achieved over the past year. Rose Ball has always combined the joy of accomplishment with the pride of connecting as a community.

This year’s Rose Ball, of course, maintains this legacy and adds to it.

Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, this year’s event will be held virtually for the first time. Our evening of celebration will continue and this, in and of itself, is a success. We choose to come together. We choose to recognize the important work of the Foundation. Above all, we choose to advance opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities, now and always.

Each year, we celebrate the Nassau County Foundation’s Rose Ball. It is a time to come together as a community and recognize the important work of the Foundation to support children and adults with developmental disabilities. This year, in particular, is special.

Covid-19 has impacted all of our lives. We remember those we have lost, those who have recovered and those on the frontlines who have kept us all safe. As a parent of a son with I/DD, I have always known that the direct support staff, the people who make it happen for my son and others like him, are not only essential – they are quite simply everything. I am privileged to know and be a part of a foundation supporting staff’s heroic actions at each and every level as they elevate all of our lives.

As we gather in front of our phones, tablets and computers for the first virtual Rose Ball, we see how the Foundation has made a crucial impact within the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families.

As each one of us has a role to play, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity in supporting AHRC Foundation. Your support is what makes all of the important and wonderful things for children and adults with developmental disabilities possible across Long Island.

About AHRC Foundation In 1994, the AHRC Foundation was founded by key members of Nassau County’s I/DD community and members of the Long Island corporate community. The Foundation’s goal was simple; to provide a financial safety net for the I/DD community that would ensure high-quality services would be available, regardless of budget shortfalls and/or the political climate.

Since then, the Foundation has provided needed and strategic supports through grant awards that advance the health, education, independence, acceptance and varied opportunities for children and adults with I/DD across their lifetime.

Additionally, AHRC Foundation established and manages two pooled special needs trusts. Unlike other types of trusts, pooled trusts are managed by non-profit organizations. Five AHRC Foundation board members serve as the Trusts’ trustees and possess knowledge of the law, finance and the specific issues facing people with I/ DD. AHRC Foundation trusts are a great option for families for whom setting up an individual Supplemental Needs Trust may be too complicated or costly. If a person with a developmental disability has assets in his/her own name, Community Trust II can preserve these assets (received, for example, from a legal settlement, inheritance or lump-sum benefit payment) while maintaining eligibility for government entitlements.

Recent areas of support and grantees include: Health – The Foundation’s commitment to health included a multi-year grant award to Advantage Care Health Centers, to support its expansion into the Freeport, Long Island community and to support the successful transition of Advantage Care Health Center into a Federally Qualified Health Centers offering quality medical, dental and mental/behavioral health services to all members of the community.

Education – Brookville Center for Children’s Services, an organization approved by the New York State Education Department and the Department of Health to provide educational and therapeutic services to children with developmental delays or disabilities. Operating 12 months a year, BCCS educates and supports over 1000 Long Island children, with and without developmental disabilities.

Guardianship – The Foundation recognizes that there are people with I/DD who require the protections of legal guardianship as they exist in New York State. The Foundation actively supports guardianship services provided by AHRC Nassau. Each year, the Foundation grants funds to pay a portion of the salary of its Guardianship coordinator to ensure a dedicated representative is established to work in partnership with the person along with his/her other support systems.

Additionally, the Foundation provides support to the Center for Children, Family and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University to assist families who do not have the financial resources to obtain guardianship for their family member who qualifies under the 17A guardianship law. It is a dynamic partnership, where law students under supervision, assist families through the guardianship process to achieve these appointments.

Respite and Recreation – The Foundation’s commitment to community inclusion and healthy living are fulfilled in grants made to Citizens Options Unlimited for its Camp Loyaltown, a program that welcomes more than 650 campers, and 100 international staff to enjoy the wonders of the outdoors, exchange of cultures, in a safe and fun environment. Additionally, the Foundation supports Citizens ComeUnity sports and recreation, providing exceptional opportunities for adults to engage in their community.

It’s the AHRC Foundation’s 70th Annual Rose Ball! The 70 years of this event have seen many changes for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). As we come together virtually, we continue this important tradition of celebrating as a community. We are doing so at a time when history is being made – and we are doing so from our homes.

In reflecting on this, I am mindful that this is similar in ways to how it was 70 years ago for families of children with developmental disabilities. These first families came together in post-WWII homes, sitting at kitchen tables and envisioning a society that would include their children. A world where their children could grow up in their own homes, go to school, have the opportunity to work and earn a paycheck, have friends, and be welcomed in houses of worship, locals stores, parks, pools and restaurants.

As we continue to respond to a changing world, we are grounded in what we hold most dear. For over a quarter of a century, the AHRC Foundation has provided necessary financial support to community-based providers who effect the vision of these first families. With the Foundation’s support, we have experienced how supporting our community goes hand in hand with our American ideals and advances the concepts of civil rights, personal liberty, family and community for all.

As we move ever forward, we remain grateful for your generous support of the Foundation and all it makes possible in the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families – it truly makes a difference.

I look forward to a time when we can be together again.

AHRC Foundation Community Trust Program AHRC Foundation Community Trust Program allows people with developmental disabilities to have their own trust fund to provide for their supplemental needs without affecting that person’s eligibility for government benefits. The trust can be funded by a parent, relative, any other person for a loved one or by the beneficiary individually.

Community Trust I is for parents, relatives or other loved ones who desire to utilize their own funds to establish a trust fund for a person with a developmental disability to ensure their supplemental needs are met after the donor has passed on.

Community Trust II allows a person with a developmental disability who already has their own resources through income, inheritance, lawsuit award or legal settlement to participate, thus protecting their assets while maintaining their government benefits. In some cases, this type of trust is the only option for those beneficiaries who want to have use of their funds during their lifetime while still benefiting from available government programs.

The minimum initial contribution is $10,000 upon acceptance of the Sponsor Agreement with the balance of the $25,000 to be paid within 5 years. Trust accounts can be funded during your lifetime or through a bequest under your will or as a designated beneficiary under a life insurance policy, retirement account or other asset.

The Trustees are Foundation Board Members, as well as parents or siblings of men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These Trustees have extensive backgrounds in the law, banking, insurance and finance. The funds are invested in a balanced portfolio in accordance with the Trust’s investment policy, which is established by the Trustees. The Trustees utilize the services of a professional custodian and investment advisor.

2019 AHRC Foundation Margiotta Memorial Golf Outing The AHRC Foundation Golf Outing was held on September 12 at the Muttontown Club. Over 100 guests spent the day golfing, enjoying the beautiful grounds and raising over $131,000 for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

2019 AHRC Walk On September 29, 2019, 123 teams and more than 1,000 attendees celebrated with a lively 3K walk through Eisenhower Park, a variety of inclusive games and endless entertainment.

Thanks to our wonderful community of supporters, we raised over $110,000 to continue our legacy of ensuring a better future for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Welcome to Holland I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability. To try to help people who have not shared that, you need experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this…

When you are going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum, the Michelangelo David, the gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.

After some months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”

“Holland?” you say. “What do you mean Holland? I signed up for Italy! All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.”

But there is a change in the flight plans, they’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The most important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease.

It’s just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books and you must learn a whole new language and you will meet a whole new group of people you have never met.

It’s just a different place. It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy.

But after you have been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills, Holland has tulips, and Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy. They are all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life you will say, “Yes, that is where I was supposed to go, that’s what I had planned.”

The pain of that will never, ever go away because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

AHRC NASSAU TODAY AHRC Nassau provides opportunities and choices for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/ DD) throughout Nassau County. Our mission is to empower people to live fulfilling lives, together with family – friends – community.

The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) recognizes AHRC Nassau as a COMPASS agency, a distinction of excellence held by only four agencies in New York State. AHRC Nassau also holds the four-year PersonCentered Excellence Accreditation With Distinction by the international accrediting organization, CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership, a distinction that is held by less than 30 organizations worldwide.

As one of the largest providers on Long Island, AHRC Nassau offers day habilitation services, pre-vocational and supported employment support, family respite services, community habilitation, guardianship, recreational opportunities and residential services for more than 2,200 people.

AHRC’S Day Habilitation Services utilizes a person-centered planning where people are supported to discover their personal goals. Men and women are supported to contribute, participate, and become valued members of the community, enjoying quality interactions with those around them. With over 30 community-based “starting points of action,” the men and women in our program are actively involved in making the community a wonderful place to work and live. By shopping for the frail and homebound, providing support for local animal shelters, beautifying parks, welcoming people at events, and helping local organizations through local drives and volunteering – day habilitation is a partnership between the people supported and the community.

The opportunity to work and earn a competitive wage is another goal for the people supported through vocational and supported employment

services. At the Freeport Work Center, employment options are growing to meet the needs of people and area businesses, ranging from the catering service CafĂŠ 230 to our landscaping division.

AHRC Nassau residential services supports 630 men and women in every community throughout Nassau County to lead full and meaningful lives. Through 78 community-based homes and 56 apartments, the bedrock of the community living services are the direct support professionals (DSPs), who provide individualized levels of support to promote independence and an exceptional life experience throughout our shared communities.

Family supports include providing families with training and education, respite services, community habilitation as well as the disbursement of a home-based reimbursement grant. This grant supports families in need to care for a family member with a developmental disability living at home.

AHRC Nassau, as a chapter of The Arc New York, has the authority to act as guardian for an adult with I/DD residing in Nassau County.

Guardianship is a legal process for adults with IDD who are unable to make or communicate effective decisions about their daily self-care, health and safety. Corporate guardianship should only be considered as a last resort after all other potential guardians for the person have been exhausted. An applicant is expected to be a Life Member of the chapter and contribute financially to the lifetime costs of providing guardianship oversight. AHRC Nassau presently provides Guardianship to 31 people and additional supports for 54 others as an alternate and standby guardian.

Throughout the year, Brookville Center for Children’s Services (BCCS) offers education, residential, therapeutic, home- and school-based services to more than 1,000 children with developmental disabilities, as well as typically developing children in daycare and preschool programs. Center-based programming is available at five locations while home and community-based services are available for Nassau and Suffolk County families.

Brookville Center educates and supports children of all abilities. We provide comprehensive services to children (ages 0–21) with an emphasis on assisting families to understand their child’s strengths and areas of need. All programs are designed to enhance cognitive, communication, social/emotional, motor and adaptive development through the implementation of New York State standards.

The fully licensed and certified staff follow a collaborative service model and research-based curricula while additionally providing therapeutic interventions that include, but are not limited to, therapeutic feeding, auditory training, music therapy, mobility and pre-vocational training.

To stimulate overall development, BCCS offers activities such as languagebased groups, arts and crafts, computers, music and movement, sensory and structured/directed play, socialization and physical education, including gross and fine motor interactions.

Citizens Options Unlimited, Inc. Citizens supports people to live the life they choose. The organization provides supports and services across Long Island to more than 1,500 people with developmental disabilities.

Citizens’ services include self-direction, family supports and education, respite and recreation and residential services. Citizens provides selfdirection services, including fiscal intermediary (FI) and broker services. Selfdirection is the philosophy that a person “self-directs” all aspects of his/her life through a plan that incorporates choices, such as where to live, how and with whom to spend time, as well as how to participate in the community. Selfdirection also allows people the opportunity to hire his/ her own staff to provide services such as supported employment, community habilitation and respite.

Citizens’ Family Support Services (FSS) offers a wide range of unique programs.

The ComeUnity Sports and Recreation program provides exceptional opportunities for adults to engage in their community and meet people through exercise and leisure activities, ranging from weekly social and athletic activities to trips. A family reimbursement grant is also administered to support families facing financial hardships and in need of goods and services related to the care of a family member with a disability.

Citizens’ respite services include residential services for both families’ crisis and traditional needs, as well as respite opportunities provided through Camp Loyaltown.

Camp Loyaltown provides oneof-a-kind camp experiences in Hunter, NY for people of all ages as well as respite opportunities throughout the year. Over 900 families are supported annually through respite services.

Citizens’ residential services are growing both in Nassau and Suffolk counties, from the Five Towns to Shoreham. Increased independence, inclusion, individualization, productivity and person-centered planning are the goals for each person receiving residential supports. Men and women are provided with a variety of nursing services and clinical supports that include psychology, nutrition, physical therapy and human growth and development services. Every person is supported to reach their goals and dreams.
