Year of Change, Continued Commitment to Mission While 2017 was a year of growth and change, AHRC Nassau responded with more nimble capabilities and programs to meet the evolving needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “The entire field is experiencing a transformation requiring a more considered, inclusive and strategic approach," said Stanfort Perry, executive director, AHRC Nassau. “This past year, through ongoing engagement across all stakeholders, AHRC is better positioned and strengthened to meet the challenges that are on the horizon," said Perry. "From strategic planning to #bfair2directcare, it’s been a year of advancement and continued success because of the strength of our community."
Strategic Planning Creates New Milestones Family led and family focused, the AHRC Nassau community is built on the belief that all people deserve the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Over the past year, board members, association leaders and community partners have met on an ongoing basis to discuss the strategic direction of the organization, as part of a three-year process called strategic planning. Part of the process was to update AHRC’s existing mission statement, vision and values. “We have a rich history,” said Perry. “The core of our organizational priorities remains the same, but we must continue to move our organization forward and create new opportunities that are person centered, practical and empowering.”

2017 AHRC Membership Luncheon
2017 was a record-breaking year in terms of events and fundraising. The importance of increased inclusion and connection among AHRC Nassau families and friends was reflected at the 68th annual Membership Luncheon and Fashion Show. At this event, AHRC N a s s a u h o n o re d its members, advocated for g re a t e r p ro g re s s , a n d c re a t e d an opportunity to re-connect as a community. The event has grown since it first started in 1949 as a way for AHRC members to come together and rally for more opportunities and greater inclusion for people with disabilities. In attendance were more than 600 AHRC Nassau members, who pledged support “to e m p o w e r people to live fulfilling lives.” “We must stay focused and vigilant, so that we don’t lose what the last generation fought for,” said Paul Giordano, president of the AHRC Nassau Board of Directors, in his w e l c o m i n g remarks. G i o rd a n o
presented a proclamation on behalf of Governor Andrew C u o m o and highlighted how the community’s collective emails, telephone calls and letters advanced important initiatives. “Our voices will be heard,” Giordano said.
“It’s a day to unite our voices.

District Attorney Madeline Singas, Mayor of Brookville Daniel Serota and Assemblyman Michael Montesano
expressed their support for the organization and its members. “I believe in all of you. I see myself as a voice. . . for people who don’t and you are the same,” said Singas. “(This organization) is so important to the fabric of society that all of us have to support.” While the community focused on gains and challenges of the present moment, the event maintained the traditions that have served as an AHRC touchstone and thank you for families over decades. Enjoying lunch on the mansion’s patio and grounds, members sat where families have come together for nearly 70 years to watch the annual fashion show featuring the latest designs from Birch Boutique and Peter Duffy Furs, hosted by Darlene Camille.
The East Meadow Art Gallery presented handmade arts and crafts.
The AHRC Greenhouse was also represented by volunteers helping to share their love of plants and flowers.

Despite the blustery weather, nearly 500 people showed up to AHRC Foundation’s re-scheduled walk on Nov. 5 at the Brookville campus. This year’s walk raised more than $120,000 — the most in the event’s history. “These results reflect the energy and commitment of the people in our programs, as well as their families, friends and team members across AHRC Nassau, Citizens Options Unlimited and Brookville Center for Children’s Services,” said Mary McNamara, foundation director, AHRC Foundation. “Together, we make a positive difference for children and adults with disabilities.”

Also, in 2017, the doors to AHRC Nassau’s ballrooms opened for private events. One of the first was board member Harriet Traversa’s 50th anniversary party. For Harriet, “the event was everything we wanted at this beautiful mansion. It was groomed to perfection. The flowers were outrageous. Our special day was so very memorable for our family and friends and very special because we celebrated at AHRC Nassau.”

New opportunities for inclusion and growth remain a part of AHRC Nassau’s call to action. AHRC Nassau, alongside its sister agencies, shone the spotlight on direct support professionals in September as part of both national DSP Week and our year-long #DSPsRock campaign. Recognition throughout the agency ranged from barbeques to thank you gifts and profiles of DSP #superheroes shared throughout the agency.

culinary service received its license to cater events throughout Nassau
County, in addition to its ongoing preparation for daily Meals on Wheels deliveries to seniors.
“I love helping cater,” said Regina King, a longtime Café 230 team member. “Serving the food and
watching people come back for seconds is (the best).”
Café 230 has already catered executive events and is ready for business. “DSP work often happens behind the scenes. It’s a way to offer our sincere thanks for the important work DSPs do, every day,” said Perry. “We look forward to continuing to highlight these important team members throughout the year.” Last spring, AHRC Nassau p a r t n e re d with the Long Island Council of Churches to develop a food pantry at Hanse Avenue in Freeport and serve neighbors in need.

Advocacy/ Fundraising AHRC Nassau’s rich history of advocacy continues, as the community actively
responds to the political threats directed at crucial programs ensuring the health and safety of more than 100,000 New
Yorkers with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. AHRC activated its community on
the following issues (found on the next page) through organized advocacy events, telephone calls, petitions, emails,

The Issues Medicaid There have been concerted efforts and a number of bills by Congressional GOP members to overturn the Affordable Care Act as well as institute large cuts to Medicaid through proposed block grants and per-capita caps. These changes would translate into funding no longer being based on need, but instead a set funding amount. It would also limit or fully cut waiver services for residential and adult day programs, self-direction, respite, and community habilitation – the services needed to ensure a dignified quality of life for people with disabilities. Recently, federal tax legislation cut funding streams for programs supporting people with disabilities.
#bFair2DirectCare After many years of campaigning to raise the minimum wage of direct support professionals (DSPs), Gov. Andrew Cuomo, alongside the New York Assembly and Senate, signed into the budget a 3.25% pay increase, effective Jan. 1, 2018 and an additional 3.25% increase for April 1, 2018. The campaign has seen success, yet the next campaign leg in winter–spring 2018 seeks to accelerate the distributions over the next two years, rather than six.
Keep the Promise There is currently an escalating housing crisis underway, leaving thousands of New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities in immediate need of permanent housing. As a member of the Keep the Promise Family Coalition, AHRC Nassau seeks to urge Governor Cuomo to create a transparent process and allocate appropriate funding to remedy this situation.

2018 is set to be a year of continued growth. We have a variety of exciting programs and opportunities that are currently in
development. Two that we can share with
you now are Wheatley Farms and Arts Center and One Stop Gift Shop.
For Wheatley Farms and Arts Center,
AHRC Nassau is proposing a progressive
concept – a center for adults with I/DD that
offers therapeutic horseback riding, organic farming, culinary arts, dance, yoga and other engaging activities.
Also, AHRC is preparing to open a store in 2018 – One Stop Gift Shop.
This venue will offer the opportunity for
volunteers to participate in the running of a retail store in Hicksville. The store will help
develop job skills and greater engagement in the local community.

Congratulations Joe Forte Joe was recently recognized for exceptional job performance and personal growth with the NYSID William B. Joslin Outstanding Performance Award, presented at a Freeport Chamber of Commerce meeting. For the past nine years, Joe has worked at the New York State Department of Labor Hicksville Career Center as a custodian and takes great pride in the work he does, every day. We would like to thank the Department of Labor, Freeport Chamber of Commerce and all the local community partners who promote inclusion and professional opportunities for people with disabilities.
Wenceslao Herrera Wenceslao won the art competition at The Arc New York Fall Board of Governors meeting. Wenceslao’s favorite medium is acrylic, and he began painting at an early age. Wenceslao attends the Oceanside Anchor Ave. hub site and has also presented his work at the East Meadow Art Gallery.

Temple Zion Tree Planting Ceremony When Temple Zion in Long Beach decided to plant eight cypress trees, AHRC Nassau was invited to take part in the tree planting and dedication ceremony, this September. Our landscaping division planted the trees and were recognized for their participation in beautifying and helping bring life to the West End temple.

LIREG and NSASA Support New Hydroponic Garden Long Island Real Estate Group (LIREG) and Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society of America (NSASA) supported the development of AHRC Nassau’s new hydroponic garden. With our new towers and electrical system coming to the AHRC Greenhouse, we can better grow awareness and employment opportunities for the people we support.

By the Beach: Centerplate Onboards AHRC Team Members Members of AHRC Nassau’s Workforce gained employment at Jones Beach, this summer, working at Centerplate concession stands. These new hires were trained at the same orientation as typical summer employees. Throughout the entire season, Centerplate staff always placed the people AHRC Nassau supports into a fully integrated setting. People with I/DD stood front and center assisting customers on a daily basis as they worked behind the counters and at condiment stands in all the fields throughout Jones Beach.

Meet Our Team
Hello, I’m Shanthea Buckle AHRC Nassau Gave Me the Resources to Pursue My Dream About Me I was a teacher for special needs children, traveling to and from the city, when my mom, who works at AHRC Nassau, told me about an opportunity to work as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) with the possibility of advancing professionally. It was a great fit. I worked hard, received promotions, and was also able to pursue a Master's Degree in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, while working full time. My Dream I want to make a difference in the developmental disability field. I know from working as a DSP to a House Manager, and someday I hope to go even higher, that the more you learn, the higher the standards you have for yourself. . .and the more you expect from those supporting our population. Joining a Team Working in an intimate environment as that of AHRC, you learn to be a better person. You become more patient and understanding, as you get a hands-on role in improving people's lives. You will work with families, behaviorists, nurses, doctors, and other professionals. What you see and do directly impacts how people achieve their goals. Becoming Part of a New Family My family knows and loves the ladies. You also become an extension of (or addition to) their family and this goes vice versa. When my mother comes to visit, they sometimes call out, “Hiiiii Mom” and the same with my sister. Weekend Dance Parties It is important to do the little things that can make a difference in their day. For example, some Saturday mornings, we turn up the music as we make breakfast and dance around. It’s an extension to Wednesdays, where we push the coffee table to the other side of the living room and dance at the end of the day, throwing in some karaoke. Sharing Your Interests Like all of us, sometimes a person we take care of doesn't want to go to work, but then maybe you'll hand her a toy fan and she'll start smiling. And, with the adorable way she fans herself, this puts a smile on your face, as well. It's the little joys and moments that you look forward to again and again that makes this career so rewarding.
