The 2022 Rose Ball journal is a publication of the Nassau County AHRC Foundation
About AHRC Foundation In 1994, AHRC Foundation was founded by key members of Nassau County’s I/DD community and members of the Long Island corporate community. The Foundation’s goal was simple; to provide a financial safety net for the I/ DD community that would ensure high-quality services would be available, regardless of budget shortfalls and/or the political climate. Since then, the Foundation has provided needed and strategic supports grant awards that advance the health, education, independence, acceptance and varied opportunities for children and adults with IDD across their lifetime. The Foundation continues to raise needed funds though special events and planned giving/legacy programs. AHRC Foundation manages two pooled special needs trusts. Unlike other types of trusts, pooled trusts are managed by a non- profit organization. AHRC Foundation board members serve as the trustees and possess knowledge of the law, finance and the specific issues facing people with I/ DD. AHRC Foundation trusts are an option for families for whom setting up an individual supplemental needs trust may be too complicated, costly or when there remains a question of selecting a trustee. The Foundation’s supports a continuum of services that include Health, Education, Respite for caregivers, community inclusion initiatives and guardianship supports. Recent areas of support and grantees include: Health – The Foundation’s commitment to health included a multi-year grant award to Advantage Care Health Centers, to support its expansion into the Freeport, Long Island community. Support continues as it continues to build upon its medical, dental and mental/behavioral health serving all members of the community regardless of their ability to pay. Education – Brookville Center for Children’s Services, an organization approved by the New York State Education Department and the Department of Health to provide educational and therapeutic services to children with developmental delays or disabilities. Operating 12 months a year, BCCS educates and supports over 1000 Long Island Children, with and without developmental disabilities. Guardianship – The Foundation recognizes that there are people with I/DD who require the protections of legal guardianship as they exist in New York State. The Foundation actively supports guardianship services provided by AHRC Nassau. Each year, the Foundation grants funds to pay a portion of the salary of its Guardianship coordinator to ensure a dedicated representative is established to work in partnership with the person along with his/her other support systems.
Additionally, the Foundation provides support to the Center for Children, Family and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University to assist families who do not have the financial resources to obtain guardianship for their family member who qualifies under the 17A guardianship law. It is a dynamic partnership, where law students under supervision, assist families through the guardianship process to achieve these appointments. Respite and Recreation – The Foundation’s commitment to community inclusion and healthy living are fulfilled in grants made to Citizens Options Unlimited, and most recently, in its support to AHRC Nassau for the Thomas S. Gulotta Wheatly Farms & Arts Center. Full community inclusion, participation and access are areas of focus for the AHRC Foundation.

Thomas P. Rosicki, Esq. President
Nassau County AHRC Foundation, Inc.
I am so pleased to welcome you to the Nassau County AHRC Foundation Rose Ball, as we highlight a year of success and opportunity for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Remaining present and alert to the changing needs of people supported and their families has been the AHRC Foundation’s call to action for nearly three decades. How we’ve responded as a grantmaking organization has been rooted in our ability to listen. Our goals are shaped by the voices of people supported, their families, and inspired community members ready to make profound and changes to increase neurodiversity, access and inclusion across greater Long Island. For this reason, I’m especially pleased to share a very special thank you to tonight’s honorees — Leadership Award Recipient, Doug Golub, President and Co-Founder of MediSked, LLC. , and Humanitarian Award Recipient, Joseph S. Saladino, Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay. Both honorees exemplify how meaningful partnerships in the private and public sector can bring to life new expectations and opportunities. My sincerest compliments to the Rose Ball Committee for all of their thoughtful planning and feedback to create this spectacular evening. Of course, we must also thank you – our donors, our supporters, and friends. Your participation at this event is an important expression of support for the AHRC Foundation and the critical services that assist people across their lifetime. Message from
Thomas F. Moore Rose Ball Chairman
Another special evening awaits the Nassau County AHRC Foundation community as we come together to celebrate the strength we find in our shared cause, our successes, and most importantly each other. Our joyful celebration at this event is important, as it energizes our way ever forward towards a future that celebrates and fully includes children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This evening, we honor two extraordinary individuals who have made exceptional contributions to realizing this shared vision. Our Leadership Award Recipient, Doug Golub, serves as President and Co-Founder of MediSked, LLC. An engaged disability rights advocate, Mr. Golub has deep personal and professional relationships throughout the field. A partner of AHRC Nassau for 17 years, Mr. Golub has created profound results in health information, security and implementations advancing the best outcomes within the lives of people with I/DD. The Foundation also recognizes the achievement of our Humanitarian Award Recipient Joseph S. Saladino, Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay. Supervisor Saladino has a demonstrated commitment to advancing support for neurodiversity. Under the Town of Oyster Bay’s leadership, the “Walk for Autism” has raised $100,000 in support of comprehensive assessments and interventions for people with autism. Saladino also has been a longtime supporter of AHRC Nassau, participating in numerous events dedicated to advocating for increased health, community inclusion and advocacy. As the father of a son with special needs, I cannot express enough my gratitude to those in the private and public sector finding new ways to improve the lives of people with disabilities and their families across Long Island. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I can’t wait to see what our shared future will bring.
Message from
Stanfort J. Perry CEO | AHRC Nassau
This evening, we come together as a community of all abilities and experiences—of people supported, family members, staff, friends and neighbors—to advance a more inclusive and equitable future. We do so with the full hearts and joyful spirits, that the annual Rose Ball always inspires. Recognizing this opportunity to connect, I’m pleased to share that AHRC Nassau continues to work toward a vision of a world where people of all abilities are valued. This person-centered vision is integrated throughout our services supporting men and women with developmental disabilities, and also in how we approach our ongoing relationships with staff, volunteers and community partners. Such practices are the foundation in the development of sustainable services and expressions of how all are valued in our community. Education and engagement are how our agency amplifies our values and shares our best practices more widely. With The Arc of the United States, AHRC Nassau recently hosted an international Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Virtual Conference with more than 3,450 registrants, 30 sessions and 80 presenters dedicated to exploring issues at the intersection of disability and race. It was a day of learning and connections. Session videos and handouts will be available through May 2023 at ahrc.org/deiconference. This event will continue to offer insights from those with lived experiences as well as leaders in the public and private sectors to new audiences. Notably, our Leadership Award Recipient, Doug Golub, President and CoFounder of MediSked, LLC, generously shared his time as a presenter at the DEI Virtual Conference. His insight and long-standing participation in the AHRC community continue to be deeply appreciated. Humanitarian Award Recipient Joseph S. Saladino, Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island, is also a notable member of our community, who has championed inclusion throughout Nassau County, making more opportunities possible than ever before. Our deepest thanks to our honorees, but also to you for joining this community and celebration.
AHRC Foundation Community Trust Program AHRC Foundation Community Trust Program allows people with developmental disabilities to have their own trust fund to provide for their supplemental needs without affecting that person’s eligibility for government benefits. The trust can be funded by a parent, relative, any other person for a loved one or by the beneficiary individually. Community Trust I is for parents, relatives or other loved ones who desire to utilize their own funds to establish a trust fund for a person with a developmental disability to ensure their supplemental needs are met after the donor has passed on. Community Trust II allows a person with a developmental disability who already has their own resources through income, inheritance, lawsuit award or legal settlement to participate, thus protecting their assets while maintaining their government benefits. In some cases, this type of trust is the only option for those beneficiaries who want to have use of their funds during their lifetime while still benefiting from available government programs. The minimum initial contribution is $10,000 upon acceptance of the Sponsor Agreement with the balance of the $25,000 to be paid within 5 years. Trust accounts can be funded during your lifetime or through a bequest under your will or as a designated beneficiary under a life insurance policy, retirement account or other asset. The Trustees are Foundation Board Members, as well as parents or siblings of men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These Trustees have extensive backgrounds in the law, banking, insurance and finance. The funds are invested in a balanced portfolio in accordance with the Trust’s investment policy, which is established by the Trustees. The Trustees utilize the services of a professional custodian and investment advisor.
To learn more about the Community Trust Program please call Mary McNamara, Foundation Director at (516) 626-1000, ext. 1133, or email foundationtrustservices@ahrc.org.

Welcome to Holland
I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability. To try to help people who have not shared that, you need experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this...
When you are going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum, the Michelangelo David, the gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting. After some months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland." "Holland?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?" I signed up for Italy! All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy." But there is a change in the flight plans, they've landed in Holland and there you must stay. The most important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease.
It's just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books and you must learn a whole new language and you will meet a whole new group of people you have never met. It's just a different place. It's slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you have been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills, Holland has tulips, and Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy. They are all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life you will say, "Yes, that is where I was supposed to go, that's what I had planned." The pain of that will never, ever go away because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland. -Emily Kingsley, Author

AHRC NASSAU TODAY AHRC Nassau provides opportunities and choices for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/ DD) throughout Nassau County. Our mission is to empower people to live fulfilling lives, together with family – friends – community. The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) recognizes AHRC Nassau as a Compass agency, a distinction of excellence held by only four agencies in New York State. AHRC Nassau also holds the four-year Person- Centered Excellence Accreditation With Distinction by the international accrediting organization, CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership, a distinction that is held by less than 35 organizations worldwide. As one of the largest providers on Long Island, AHRC Nassau offers day habilitation services, pre-vocational and supported employment support, family respite services, community habilitation, guardianship, recreational opportunities and residential services for more than 2,000 people. AHRC’S Day Habilitation Services utilizes a person-centered planning where people are supported to discover their personal goals. Men and women are supported to contribute, participate, and become valued members of the community, enjoying quality interactions with those around them. With over 27 community-based “starting points of action,” the men and women in our program are actively involved in making the community a wonderful place to work and live. By shopping for the frail and homebound, providing support for local animal shelters, beautifying parks, welcoming people at events, and helping local organizations through local drives and volunteering – day habilitation is a partnership between the people supported and the community. The opportunity to work and earn a competitive wage is another goal for the people supported through vocational and supported employment services. At the Freeport Work Center, employment options are growing to meet the needs of people and area businesses, ranging from the Wheatley Farms catering service, to our landscaping division.
AHRC Nassau residential services supports 630 men and women in every community throughout Nassau County to lead full and meaningful lives. Through 78 communitybased homes and 56 apartments, the bedrock of the community living services are the direct support professionals (DSPs), who provide individualized levels of support to promote independence and an exceptional life experience throughout our shared communities. Family supports include providing families with training and education, respite services, community habilitation as well as the disbursement of a home-based reimbursement grant. This grant supports families in need to care for a family member with a developmental disability living at home. AHRC Nassau, as a chapter of The Arc New York, has the authority to act as guardian for an adult with I/DD residing in Nassau County. Guardianship is a legal process for adults with IDD who are unable to make or communicate effective decisions about their daily selfcare, health and safety. Corporate guardianship should only be considered as a last resort after all other potential guardians for the person have been exhausted. An applicant is expected to be a Life Member of the chapter and contribute financially to the lifetime costs of providing guardianship oversight. AHRC Nassau presently provides Guardianship to 31 people and additional supports for 54 others as an alternate and standby guardian.

Citizens’ Family Support Services (FSS) offers a wide range of unique programs to support families living in the community. The program offers a family reimbursement program, respite services (including residential respite) and most recently virtual opportunities. Citizens’ FSS was able to respond to the pandemic by offering virtual Camp Loyaltown as well as initiating Respite Connections. Respite Connections offers day, evening and weekend opportunities to connect, create and achieve on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville campus. Plans are underway to return to Camp Loyaltown in Hunter NY for 2022 for both the summer Camp season and off-season respite. Citizens’ residential services are growing both in Nassau and Suffolk counties, from the Five Towns to Shoreham, LI. Increased independence, inclusion, productivity and person-centered planning are the goals for each person receiving residential supports. Men and women are provided with a variety of nursing services and clinical supports that include psychology, nutrition, physical therapy and human growth and development services.
