DIRECT SUPPORT

DIRECT SUPPORT

At Citizens Options Unlimited, DSPs are the backbone of the residential services we provide to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

From Sept. 7 - 13, we shared the stories of DSPs whose compassion and dedication transforms the lives of the people we support. We also heard from families and staff members who have been positively impacted by DSPs and all that they do.

MEET

MARTINE JEROME MEET MARTINE JEROME

DIRECT

SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AT THE RED SPRING LANE HOUSE

Martine joined the team just over four years ago and has been an essential part of the house ever since. Known for the warmth she brings to Red Spring Lane, Martine cares deeply about her work and the people around her.

Although Martine works the morning shift, she often helps prepare dinner to ease the transition for the next team always thinking one step ahead. She is also a skilled communicator who connects nursing staff, management, and family members. She follows up, checks in, and makes sure everyone stays in the loop. Beyond the house, Martine makes sure the people we support are engaged in their community, whether it’s going out to dinner, attending concerts, or just finding meaningful ways to make memories.

MEET CAROLLE JEAN BAPTISTE MEET CAROLLE JEAN BAPTISTE

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AT THE RED SPRING LANE HOUSE

Carolle has been a vital member of the Citizens Options Unlimited team for five years. She joined us during one of the most challenging times amid the COVID-19 pandemic when many of our programs were in crisis and the people we support needed us more than ever. From the moment she arrived, Carolle immediately became an integral part of Red Spring Lane.

Carolle’s care, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the people who live at Red Spring Lane are truly immeasurable. Her calm and composed demeanor allow her to navigate even the most difficult situations with professionalism and grace.

MEET CYNTHIA SAINT JEAN MEET CYNTHIA SAINT JEAN

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AT THE RUGBY ROAD HOUSE

Cynthia previously worked as a DSP providing Day Habilitation services at the Helen Kaplan Center before transferring to the Rugby Road residence in October 2025.

Cynthia explained that her work is different from her time at the Helen Kaplan Center, as the smaller group of people living there offers her the opportunity to spend more time exploring each person’s unique interests and preferences.

“I like my job,” said Cynthia. “I like everything I do. I like taking care of people.”

Cynthia added that she enjoys working with the Rugby Road team, and everything she’s learning along the way.

“In this field I learn a lot about kindness, because we are all human beings,” said Cynthia. “I like what I’m doing.”

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AT THE FORT SALONGA ROAD HOUSE

Kenesha has dedicated her career to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). She previously worked as a DSP for Brookville Center for Children’s Services’ Children’s Residential Program and a program director at another agency.

Kenesha enjoys the hands-on work and developing strategies matching each person’s unique interests and abilities. She also appreciates the opportunity to be a positive and supportive presence when challenging moments arise – offering space to process and talk about “What’s upsetting you?” or “Why can’t we move on?’’

Kenesha’s favorite part about being a DSP at the Northport residence is the people she supports.

LAVERN CHRISTIE BEDWARD LAVERN CHRISTIE BEDWARD

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AT THE PORT

WASHINGTON BOULEVARD HOUSE

Lavern began working as DSP at the agency in March 2022 after working as a home health aide.

Over her three years here, Lavern has supported people to gain more independence and develop skills that will increase self-sufficiency.

For Lavern, a special part of the job is spending time with the people supported and creating opportunities to celebrate.

“I love helping people feel important,” Lavern said. “I love when they have birthdays, to make them feel extra special.”

MEET SEANIE DUNCAN MEET SEANIE DUNCAN

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AT THE PORT WASHINGTON BOULEVARD HOUSE

Seanie began working as a DSP for Citizens Options Unlimited in December 2022. Previously, Seanie supported people as a home health aide, where she developed transferable skills that contributed to her success as a DSP.

“I love helping the people I support achieve their goals, gain independence, and feel proud of themselves,” said Seanie when asked about the part of her job she enjoys the most.

During her time here, Seanie said she’s learned the value of patience, compassion and teamwork.

“I’ve also discovered small acts of kindness can have a big impact on the people that we serve and their families,” said Seanie.

CELEBRATING DSP RECOGNITION WEEK ACROSS CITIZENS

MESSAGES OF SUPPORT!

Melbourne Henry has been a life-changing DSP for our son Nicholas. He’s helped bring Nick into the community and strengthen his social skills. His kindness, dedication, and care have helped Nicholas grow into a happy, confident young man. We’re deeply grateful. Thank you, Melbourne!

-Lisa Reminick, Parent of Person Supported

Thank you and God bless all the DSPs at the Greenlawn and Manhasset houses for all their hard work and care for Paul! Paul and our family are so grateful and pray for you daily! You are such special people!

-The Cusanelli Family, Family of Person Supported

My nephew has been blessed with the most caring and wonderful DSP and they have literally saved his life more than once. Thanks to these angels, our family has the peace of mind of knowing that our loved one is cared for not only physically, but socially and emotionally. Cris has experienced unthinkable tragedies in his young life, totally unrelated to his disability. He came to visit home today, dressed impeccably, laughing broadly and so content; it is proof that the DSPs at William Street have gone way beyond their duty in caring for him. Thank you all!

Special shout out to Brianna B, who has become almost like a sister to Cris. Her patience, love and understanding of him is remarkable. There are no words that can express our gratitude! May God always bless you and repay your kindness one thousandfold.

-Mary Gomez, Aunt of Person Supported

DSPs are special people who have the lives of our vulnerable family members in their hands. As a parent and a professional in this field, I know how hard DSPs work to ensure our family members are safe and help them to engage in meaningful activities each day.

Thank you to all DSPs that work day in and day out to support our kids (both young and old).

-Faylene Bonasia, Parent of Person Supported

Thank you to Christine Basile, Manager, and the Red Spring Lane DSPs for helping to make Arielle's summer a fun-filled one by taking her to Legoland and Splish Splash. She had a blast with all of you! Thank you all for the exciting adventures ! xoxo

-Michelle Laser, Parent of Person Supported

Here is a big shout out for our DSP Rosewood staff. We are so lucky to have each and every one of you! Happy DSP Recognition Week.

-April Pekrul, Staff Member

Citizens and AHRC DSPs, thank you so much for everything you do for my brother. Our family truly appreciates it, and we are so grateful. Plainview Ontario Home, and Carmens Road Day-Hab treat our brother with respect, and care for him daily.

-Jon Black, Sibling of Person Supported

The Dutchen family is forever grateful to the kind, patient & caring DSPs of Massapequa House. You are deserving of our highest praise & respect. Sincerest appreciation for all you do to ensure our loved ones’ well being.

-Debbie, Steve, Bobby & Mikey Dutchen, Family of Person Supported

A special note of gratitude to Channa and Jennifer at House C for their dedication and commitment to the residents. I've seen them mentor new staff, and set an example of caring that makes the house a home. Because they transport so many to medical appointments, they retain the information the doctors share and advocate for the residents every day. Their knowledge and experience are invaluable. AHRC-Citizens and families are very grateful they are there.

-Sandra Bolbrock, Parent of Person Supported

For the 20 plus years of involvement with our organization, I never get tired of expressing gratitude to those who work, both directly and indirectly, with our population. As I have said, and still so strongly believe, DSPs have a calling, and not a job. The kindness and dedication that they embody cannot be overly stated.

-Susan Broderick, Parent of Person Supported
