Nassau County AHRC Foundation, Inc.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 69th AHRC Foundation Rose Ball. Every Rose Ball is a unique expression of our community’s growth and the immense contributions made over the past year. While this field’s opportunities and challenges are ever-evolving, what remains constant is our team and partners, who all share a sincere commitment to the best possible outcomes for children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. Our wonderful celebration is a yearly promise and opportunity to reenergize as we forge ahead into a brighter, more accessible future. AHRC Foundation is a formidable source of financial strength and creativity. We are especially fortunate to have Stanfort J. Perry leading our family of organizations. He continues to welcome new stakeholders and approaches, so that our supports remain of the highest quality, today and far into the future. Today’s innovations are tomorrow’s best practices. We honor the innovators in our community, whose new approaches have expanded the reach of our organizations. We are proud to present this year’s Leadership Award to Neal L. Sweeney, Marketing Executive, CIGNA Healthcare, and our Humanitarian Award to Judge Gail Prudenti, Dean and Executive Director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Thank you to our most deserving honorees and – and to all who support our noble mission. Together, we continue to change the world.

Message from

Thomas F. Moore Rose Ball Chairman

All of us, here at AHRC’s Rose Ball, have come together to celebrate. This evening, we proudly stand at the forefront of a rich history of families and community members, dedicated to building the brightest possible futures for children, adults and their families. We know the power of our community. We value our traditions, especially this event where we can enjoy time with friends, both old and new. It’s also an opportunity to honor two distinguished individuals, whose strength of purpose and contributions to our wonderful cause have made a profound impact. We are pleased to present the Foundation’s Leadership Award to Neal Sweeney, Marketing Executive, Cigna Health, in recognition for the outstanding professionalism he displayed in building excellent new health care options for our employee team. We also are honored to present the Foundation’s Humanitarian Award to the Honorable Gail Prudenti, Dean and Executive Director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Judge Prudenti spearheaded a partnership with AHRC to offer pro-bono 17-A guardianship appointment services to some of Long Island’s most vulnerable. The contributions of our honorees are exceptional and we are proud recognize them and welcome them more fully into our mission-focused family. It is a family that weathers challenges and celebrates successes. Above all, it is one that endures. With your dedication and support, we look forward to even greater successes in the years to come!

Message from

Stanfort J. Perry Executive Director

What we accomplish every day throughout our family of organizations is exceptional. Our annual Rose Ball is always a welcome occasion to come together and celebrate before we set course for even greater successes. In a few short months, we will complete our three-year strategic planning process strengthening the opportunities we offer the people we support, their families and the greater community. This process forged new initiatives, expanded existing processes, and engaged our mission-oriented leadership team in creative discussions about new partnerships and approaches. I am extremely proud of the outcomes. In this time, AHRC Nassau and Citizens Options Unlimited earned the four-year Person-Centered Excellence Accreditation With Distinction from CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership — CQL’s highest designation given to less than 30 organizations worldwide. As part of this process, our advocacy initiatives reached farther than ever before and facilitated deeper relationships with government partners, as we called out for greater support for #bFair2DirectCare and other vital campaigns. At the program level, we developed inspiring venues, such as the One Stop Gift Shop which is nearly a year in business and Wheatley Farms and Arts Center, a new program soon to open its doors. Our unparalleled team makes all of these opportunities possible. Though Staff Appreciation Day just took place, we continuously seek to recognize our team who contribute so much. Our Staff Diversity Committee, in particular, is dedicated to celebrating what makes us all unique while inviting all to enjoy. This evening is also an opportunity to recognize our partners whose service has created profound contributions to our community. Thank you to Humanitarian Award Recipient, Judge Gail Prudenti, Dean and Executive Director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and Leadership Award Recipient, Neal L. Sweeney, Marketing Executive at CIGNA Healthcare. You have our deepest appreciation. Your commitment to our family of organizations is powerful and energizes our efforts to fulfill our mission for generations to come.

2019 Leadership Award Recipient

Neal L. Sweeney Marketing Executive CIGNA Healthcare

Neal L. Sweeney is an experienced marketing professional specializing in new business sales for the New York and New Jersey region at the global health care company, Cigna. With more than 30 years in sales, Sweeney’s excellence is grounded in an acute empathy and understanding of his clients’ needs. As a result of Sweeney’s outstanding professionalism, AHRC’s family of organizations shifted toward health care services offering greater access and affordability to all of our team. In supporting the health and wellness of staff, Sweeney has bolstered the very foundation that the work for a more inclusive future for people with developmental disabilities is built on. A true industry thought leader, Sweeney has consistently produced results that qualified him for Cigna’s Gold Circle Superior Achievement Conference 23 times. He also has served on Cigna’s Gold Circle Cabinet Advisory Panel. He is a frequent guest speaker at various industry seminar sessions and an expert on the overall impact lifestyle choices have on one’s health, strategic health initiatives and funding alternatives. Sweeney’s career at Cigna began in 1984, and he is currently responsible for opportunities involving large groups with 500 or more employees. Neal’s producer/broker assignment includes many of the most recognizable brokerage and consulting firms in the industry. Sweeney is a graduate of Hofstra University.

2019 Humanitarian Award Recipient Judge Gail Prudenti Dean and Executive Director Center for Children, Families and the Law Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University The Honorable Gail Prudenti is an exceptional jurist and administrator, whose dedication to public service has changed countless lives. Under her stewardship, the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University has become an engaged AHRC Foundation partner and made significant contributions to our community. In partnership with AHRC Foundation, Judge Prudenti meaningfully promoted new supports for some of Long Island’s most vulnerable with the launch of the 17-A Guardianship Appointment Clinic at the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law. Since January 2017, this clinic has assisted families in need throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, with law students facilitating guardianship appointments for young adults with developmental disabilities nearing the age of 18. This crucial initiative not only collapses barriers to legal services for the economically disadvantaged, it also safeguards important medical, legal and life decisions for Long Islanders with developmental disabilities. Judge Prudenti’s compassionate leadership is grounded in an impressive judicial career spanning more than two decades. Judge Prudenti served as Chief Administrative Judge of the courts of New York State. In this role, she supervised the courts’ administration and operation, with a budget of more than $2.7 billion, 3,600 state and locally paid judges, and 15,000 non-judicial employees in over 350 court facilities. She also served as a member of the Oversight Board for Judiciary Civil Legal Services in New York, which grants annual awards totaling $85 million to legal service providers to the indigent throughout the state. A trailblazer, Judge Prudenti is the first person to hold both the titles of Dean and Executive Director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. She also was the first woman to serve as the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division for the Second Judicial Department in New York State as well as the first woman from Suffolk County to serve as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division for the Second Judicial Department. Judge Prudenti earned her law degree from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, which also awarded her an honorary Doctorate of Laws and an honorary appointment as Professor in the School of Law.

AHRC Foundation Gift Opportunities Your gift to the AHRC Foundation can help make an important difference in the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families. It can also offer you significant tax advantages.

Cash: Cash is the easiest kind of gift to make to the Foundation. Gifts of cash are fully tax deductible up to 60% of your adjusted gross income.

Appreciated Stock:

It makes sense to give a gift of appreciated stock, which you have held for more than one year, because it generally offers substantial tax savings. If you sell the stock, you must pay capital gains tax. If you donate the stock to the Foundation, you avoid having to pay the capital gains tax. Furthermore, your gift of the stock is fully tax-deductible up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. The tax deduction is based on the fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift. Gifts in excess of 30% may generally be carried forward and deducted over subsequent years.

Real Estate: A gift to the Foundation of real property, such as a personal residence,

vacation home, farm, acreage or vacant lot can offer a twofold tax saving. If the property has appreciated in value during your ownership, you must pay a sizeable capital gains tax when you sell it. If you make a gift of the property, you receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property subject to AGI Limitation and you also avoid having to pay the capital gains tax. You may also make a gift to the Foundation of a remainder interest in your personal residence, and continue to live there for your lifetime, while still realizing a tax deduction in the year you make the gift.

Gifts with a Retained Income for Life:

You may make a gift of cash, stock, real estate, or personal property to establish a Charitable Remainder Unitrust or a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust that will give you income to be paid to you and/ or a loved one for the rest of your life, after which the trust assets are distributed to the Foundation. By making this gift, you can increase your income and make a tax deductible contribution at the same time.

Wills and Bequests: You may wish to include a bequest to the Nassau County AHRC Foundation, Inc. in your will. Your bequest is fully deductible for federal estate tax purposes and you will also receive a New York State estate tax deduction.

For information on making a gift to the AHRC Foundation, speak with Mary McNamara, Foundation Director at (516) 626-1075, ext. 1133. We will be pleased to assist you and work with your personal advisors. *We do not provide tax advice, and you should consult your own tax consultant.

AHRC FOUNDATION BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

AHRC Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization established as a public foundation to support and raise funds for the benefit of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. AHRC Foundation is the primary philanthropic supporter of AHRC Nassau, Brookville Center for Children’s Services, Citizens Options Unlimited and Advantage Care Health Centers and awards grants to over a dozen community-based organizations that support its mission. The Foundation offers a wide range of gift-giving opportunities to ensure the fulfillment of its mission, including cash, appreciated stock, personal residences, life insurance, retirement benefits, trusts, wills and bequests, as well as gifts with a retained income for the life of the donor. Your gift to the Nassau County AHRC Foundation supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It can also result in significant tax savings and generate income to help you meet your own personal and family financial objectives. Your caring gift will make it possible for the Foundation to help children and adults who need a lifetime of care and support today, and into the next generation. To learn more about the AHRC Foundation and how you can participate in gift opportunities, call Mary McNamara, Foundation Director at 516-626-1000, ext. 1133. Nassau County AHRC Foundation, Inc. Thomas P. Rosicki, Esq., President 189 Wheatley Road Brookville, NY 11545-2699 www.ahrcfoundation.org

THE 21st CENTURY SOCIETY AHRC Foundation’s 21st Century Society was formed in 1999 to recognize those individuals who have made a planned gift to the AHRC Foundation. By naming the AHRC Foundation as the beneficiary in one’s will, life insurance policy, retirement plan, savings account or charitable remainder trust, you are ensuring that future generations of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will continue to benefit from the invaluable services and programs serving those with special needs. Every act of charity improves the quality of life, not only for those in need, but also for those who contribute. People who give so generously during their lifetime are often unaware of how much their contributions will be missed when they are no longer around. A charitable bequest or planned gift can make a significant difference to the AHRC Foundation and bring peace of mind for the donor. Aside from tax benefits that may accompany a gift, when you make a planned gift you ensure that the good work you championed during your lifetime will continue long after. To date, the Society has over 70 members. A bequest made to the AHRC Foundation need not be cash assets. The Foundation is also pleased to accept gifts of stock, real estate, bonds, or a living trust. If you would like help in this planning process, please contact Mary McNamara, Foundation Director at (516) 626-1000, ext. 1133. Remember, a gift to the AHRC Foundation is a gift to the future of your loved ones.

AHRC Foundation Community Trust Program AHRC Foundation Community Trust Program allows people with developmental disabilities to have their own trust fund to provide for their supplemental needs without affecting that person’s eligibility for government benefits. The trust can be funded by a parent, relative, any other person for a loved one or by the beneficiary individually. Community Trust I is for parents, relatives or other loved ones who desire to utilize their own funds to establish a trust fund for a person with a developmental disability to ensure their supplemental needs are met after the donor has passed on. Community Trust II allows a person with a developmental disability who already has their own resources through income, inheritance, lawsuit award or legal settlement to participate, thus protecting their assets while maintaining their government benefits. In some cases, this type of trust is the only option for those beneficiaries who want to have use of their funds during their lifetime while still benefiting from available government programs. The minimum initial contribution is $10,000 upon acceptance of the Sponsor Agreement with the balance of the $25,000 to be paid within 5 years. Trust accounts can be funded during your lifetime or through a bequest under your will or as a designated beneficiary under a life insurance policy, retirement account or other asset. The Trustees are Foundation Board Members, as well as parents or siblings of men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These Trustees have extensive backgrounds in the law, banking, insurance and finance. The funds are invested in a balanced portfolio in accordance with the Trust’s investment policy, which is established by the Trustees. The Trustees utilize the services of a professional custodian and investment advisor.

To learn more about the Community Trust Program please call Mary McNamara, Foundation Director at (516) 626-1000, ext. 1133.

Welcome to Holland I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability. To try to help people who have not shared that, you need experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this… When you are going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum, the Michelangelo David, the gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting. After some months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.” “Holland?” you say. “What do you mean Holland? I signed up for Italy! All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.” But there is a change in the flight plans, they’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay. The most important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place. So you must go out and buy new guide books and you must learn a whole new language and you will meet a whole new group of people you have never met. It’s just a different place. It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you have been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills, Holland has tulips, and Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy. They are all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life you will say, “Yes, that is where I was supposed to go, that’s what I had planned.” The pain of that will never, ever go away because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland. -Emily Kingsley, Author

AHRC NASSAU TODAY AHRC Nassau provides opportunities and choices to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) throughout Nassau County. Our mission is to empower people to live fulfilling lives, together with family – friends – community. Offering a wide array of outstanding supports, the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) recognizes AHRC Nassau as a COMPASS agency, a distinction of excellence held by only four agencies in New York State. AHRC Nassau also holds the four-year Person-Centered Excellence Accreditation With Distinction from the international accrediting organization, CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership. Our CQL distinction is held by less than 30 organizations worldwide. AHRC Nassau’s best-in-class services are focused on person-centered outcomes, developed alongside the people we support as they fulfill their personal goals. Our services include day habilitation, pre-vocational and supported employment, family respite, community habilitation, guardianship, recreation and residential opportunities for more than 2,200 people. With over 30 community-based “starting points of action,” the men and women in AHRC’s Day Habilitation Program are actively involved in making the community a wonderful place to work and live. By shopping for the frail and homebound, providing support for local animal shelters, beautifying parks, welcoming people at events, and helping local organizations through fundraising and volunteering – day habilitation is a partnership between the people supported and the community. The opportunity to work and earn a competitive wage is another goal achieved through vocational and supported employment services. In our Freeport office, employment options are also growing to meet the needs of people and area businesses, ranging from the catering service Café 230 to our landscaping division.

AHRC Nassau Residential Services supports 630 men and women in every community throughout Nassau County to lead full and meaningful lives. Through 78 community-based homes and 56 apartments, the bedrock of this program are the direct support professionals (DSPs), who provide individualized levels of support to promote independence and an exceptional life experience in our shared communities. AHRC Family Support Services provides families with training and education, respite services, community habilitation as well as the disbursement of a homebased reimbursement grant, that assists in-need families with the care of a loved one, who has I/DD and lives at home. AHRC Nassau, as a chapter of The Arc New York, has the authority to act as guardian for an adult with I/DD residing in Nassau County. Guardianship is a legal process for adults with I/DD who are unable to make or communicate decisions about their daily self-care, health and safety. Corporate guardianship should only be considered as a last resort after all other potential guardians for the person have been exhausted. An applicant is expected to be a Life Member of the chapter and contribute financially to the lifetime costs of providing guardianship oversight. AHRC Nassau presently provides Guardianship to 31 people and additional supports for 54 others as an alternate and standby guardian.

ADVOCACY SUPPORT EDUCATION

Membership equals influence as our legislators and policymakers struggle with economic restraints, allowing us to effectively advocate on behalf of the people we support. Membership provides networking opportunities for family members, professionals, advocates and others interested in promoting the wellbeing of those who have developmental disabilities. Membership promotes awareness and acceptance of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout our communities.

Citizens Options Unlimited, Inc. Citizens supports people to live the life they choose through family and community engagement. The organization provides supports and services across Long Island to more than 1,500 people with developmental disabilities. Citizens’ services include self-direction, family supports and education, respite and recreation and residential services. The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) recognizes Citizens as a COMPASS agency, a distinction of excellence held by only four agencies in New York State. Citizens also holds the four-year PersonCentered Excellence Accreditation With Distinction by the international accrediting organization, CQL ǀ The Council on Quality and Leadership. Citizens provides selfdirection services, including fiscal intermediary (FI) and broker services. Selfdirection is the philosophy that a person “self-directs” all aspects of his/her life through a plan that incorporates choices, such as where to live, how and with whom to spend time, as well as how to participate in the community. Self-direction also allows people the opportunity to hire his/her own staff to provide services such as supported employment, community habilitation and respite. Citizens’ Family Support Services (FSS) offers a wide range of unique programs. The ComeUnity Sports and

Recreation program provides exceptional opportunities for adults to engage in their community and meet people through exercise and leisure activities, ranging from weekly social and athletic activities to trips. A family reimbursement grant is also administered to support families facing financial hardships in need of goods and services related to the care of a family member with a disability. Citizens’ respite services include residential, both crisis and traditional, as well as respite opportunities provided through Camp Loyaltown. Camp Loyaltown provides oneof-a-kind camp experiences in Hunter, NY for people of all ages as well as respite opportunities throughout the year. Over 900 families are supported annually through respite services. Citizens’ residential services are growing both in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Increased independence, inclusion, individualization, productivity and personcentered planning are the goals for each person receiving residential supports. Men and women are provided with a variety of nursing services and clinical supports that include psychology, nutrition, physical therapy and human growth and development services. Every person is supported to reach their goals and dreams.
