AHRC Nassau, in conjunction with The Arc of the United States and leaders in the private and public sector, is proud to host the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Virtual Conference, “Beyond the Comfort Zone: Understanding and Eradicating Injustice, Racism and Inequality in the Field of Developmental Disabilities” on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

Our Executive Director, Stanfort Perry, shared the following call to action both within AHRC Nassau and to the outside community…..

“As neighbors, fellow citizens and people of different backgrounds and experiences, we can

choose a better future. It will require work as individuals. It will require new ways of operating within organizations and government. It will require constructive conflict, opportunities and new ideas. It will be a process, but one well worth the effort. MISSION STATEMENT Mission Statement and Management Plan Each year, AHRC Nassau reviews the agency’s Mission Statement and Management Plan. It began with the council and Compass committee reviews in the fall. The following is recommended and will be reviewed by the Board of Directors in January.

PART 1 – MISSION STATEMENT REVIEW: Council Review: 1. Last year’s feedback on AHRC Nassau Mission Statement was as follows: No changes are recommended to the mission statement. However, the council would like the pictures on the agency poster updated.

2. The council also revisited their 2020 recommendations regarding wording. Specifically “wording used should be readable/ easier to understand by everyone. Many advocates will not understand some mission statements given the wording.”

Therefore, the following is recommended for this year: “AHRC Nassau supports people to live a life of dignity and happiness.”

PART II - MANAGEMENT PLAN REVIEW: Criterion #1 - Board and Management Commitment: 1. Add: Additional person supported to the Board of Directors.

2. Continue: Board of Directors physical plant inspections to be conducted remotely if needed to not compromise health and safety due to the pandemic.

Criterion #2 - Mission Statement and Commitment to the ISE: 1. Add: Strengthen systems related to Personal Outcome Measures to promote a Person Centered Plan for each person.

Criterion #3 – Empowerment: 1. Add to Diversity Initiative: Person supported to serve as a member of the DEI Committee.

2. Add Respectful Interactions to monthly rights training series.

3. Add “Empowering You” during virtual Friday Day Services to management plan and change Empowerment Training to as needed.

Criterion #5 – Self-Survey: 1. Pending: Assess possible changes to self-survey process. OPWDD Risk Stratified Survey Process is pending implementation. Upon receipt of system and protocols, RA will assess and obtain all stakeholders’ input regarding possible changes to the self-survey process.

Criterion #6 – Valued Outcomes: 1. Assess and possibly revise Personal Outcome Measures Quality Reviews to strengthen support of each person’s desired personal outcomes.

MISSION STATEMENT & GUIDING PRINCIPLES IN ACTION Donating Food to Help Families in Need!

Our agency is proud to continue our initiative to help families who face food insecurity. This year, beautiful food baskets were delivered to agency families that were in need of a Thanksgiving meal. Thank you to all who provided support by donating food and their time

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS AHRC Nassau contributed 240 fleece jackets to the Central American Refugee Center, a local nonprofit offering legal services and education to immigrant communities. Contributing to the Students Rise Fundraiser, the jacket donation was part of an ongoing collaboration between AHRC Nassau and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

Justin Dantzler, Director, Employment Services, said, “The project has been instrumental in providing training opportunities for men and women with disabilities enrolled in our supported employment services.”

The project began with 15,000 fleece jackets confiscated by the Nassau County District Attorney’s office from counterfeit embroidery operations in 2018. The DA’s office donated two confiscated SWF embroidery machines to AHRC to place embroidered patches over the counterfeit labels on the jackets.

Todd Borom, Director, Business Development, said, “We look forward to further collaborations with the Nassau County District Attorney’s office in providing warm jackets for the charitable organizations with which we partner.”

National Disability Employment Awareness Month October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which we embraced with a warm shout-out to Blink Fitness - Valley Stream and Baldwin.

Barbara, Robert, Artie, and Regina love going to work. There is always someone available to answer questions or concerns. It’s inspiring to see all employees supported to be successful.

Thank you for four years of a wonderful partnership, and here’s to many more!

VALIDATION VISIT Validation Visit 2021 The annual COMPASS recertification validation visit was held the week of May 18, 2021. COMPASS related activities were completed throughout the week and included interviews with Board members, advocates and staff, in addition to standard COMPASS related activities, (house and family meetings, Council meetings, empowerment training, etc.).

The validation visit was completed remotely, and documentation (COMPASS minutes, Board minutes, Council minutes, IRC/HRC minutes, survey results, etc.) was provided and reviewed by DQI in advance.

The validation visit was a great success. A recommendation was made to enhance our communication regarding recruitment and retention of DSPs across stakeholders. An action plan for this recommendation was developed and implemented.

AHRC Nassau was certified as a COMPASS agency with no findings noted. Congratulations everyone!

Journey to Success!

For Cheryl Cohen, being employed is an essential part not only of her personality but of her incredible drive. Anyone who knows Cheryl can see, her single-minded focus on making a living is something that matters most to her in her life’s journey. It is also the way in which Cheryl ensures that she has attained a measure of social capital in her life, giving her access to the benefits of community living.

Cheryl was happily employed for quite a long time at the Freeport Vocational Center as a receptionist. She was well spoken, efficient and friendly. I remember thinking, when I placed a call there, how pleasant her voice was and how recognizable. Cheryl would have been happy to continue her work there for a long time but the vicious COVID-19 pandemic intervened and the position was excessed. Not content with remaining home in her apartment, Cheryl secured the help of the Supported Employment department of the Vocational Center and began to get very serious about finding a job.

With the support of Employment Training Specialist, Meghan Sullivan, Cheryl focused on honing her skills in resume writing and interview techniques. These methods helped Cheryl gain confidence building talents to move forward with her search. Cheryl knew that she preferred to work in a retail setting and focused on that goal. After a few interviews at different retail establishments, she was asked to interview at Marshall’s Department Store. Cheryl told me she was anticipatory at the interview, and she knew that this was the kind of place where she would enjoy working. It is a safe bet to say her enthusiasm must have shown, because she got a call back with those happy words, “You got the job!!”

Cheryl is thrilled to be a part of the Marshall’s team, and working in stock allows her to acquire even more skills necessary to continue to grow as a valuable member of the community. Cheryl is proud of her achievements and is appreciative of the kind of support she received in her remarkable road to success.

PERSONAL MISSION Eric Ross: Using His POM to Create His Plan

By Kate Zimmerman, POM Interviewer On October 11, Eric Ross met with me for his POM interview in AHRC Nassau’s Farmingdale II hubsite. Since it had been quite a while since Eric had done a POM interview, he asked me to remind him what it was.

I talked with him about the conversation we’d be having that day, and that ultimately his POM is a tool to help him advocate for what he wants for his life and at his life plan meeting. Immediately, Eric had several questions for me, about things he wanted for his life and if they were a possibility for him. I answered yes and that the POM would get to his whole team so they would know what he wanted to achieve. Eric shared that his life plan meeting was the following Monday, and asked if I could come advocate for him, since he doesn’t know how to read, to share his POM information on his own. I said yes, and a few days later e-mailed Eric’s completed POM to his team with the simple request to “please attach and discuss at life plan meeting”.

When I arrived at the hubsite for Eric’s meeting, Site Manager Blosom Cole had Eric’s POM data summary and current life plan on her desk, ready for the meeting. She pulled a chair into the office for me to sit in and logged us into the meeting. Once all parties had logged on, including Eric, his care manager began the meeting. Blosom shared that Kate from the POM Department was on the call at Eric’s request. His care manager greeted me, and stated “If it’s ok with Eric, I’d like to turn the meeting over to Kate so that we can build his life plan on what he wants.” Once Eric gave his permission, his care manager introduced me and asked me to review the recommendations from the POM so that they could be discussed and implemented. The first item discussed was Eric’s expressed desire to get a job working as a DJ, but needed to learn how. The recommendation had been made to reach out to our community partners at Caffeine Academy. Eric’s residential team shared that they had already visited Caffeine Academy’s website and looked at the schedule for DJ classes. They were in the process of arranging transportation for Eric to be able to attend the classes. Eric had also said he would like to learn money skills and how to read. I recommended contacting Literacy Nassau as a way for Eric to be more integrated into his community while learning to read. His care manager and residential team were quick to accept the contact information and discuss transportation for Eric to get to those classes as well. Blosom shared that it would be something that was worked on at program as well. Other supports, such as getting Eric Community Habilitation staff and teaching him how to use Able Ride so that he could have increased independent access to his community in the future were discussed.

With the support of Blosom and the amazing team at the Farmingdale II hubsite, Eric has already begun learning how to write the letters of the alphabet and put together short sentences. When I spoke with Eric to get his permission to share his story, he was very excited about the opportunity and asked if he could contribute to the article. I was thrilled and told him he absolutely could, but not to put pressure on himself to get it done and that we could do more articles as he accomplishes all the things he wants to.

I went to visit Farmingdale II in the beginning of December and was greeted by a very excited Eric, who handed me a notebook and simply said “Hi Kate, look what I did.” I opened the book and a few pages in was his name and 3 things he wants to accomplish. My jaw fell open and I asked Eric if these were the sentences he wanted to put in the article. When he told me yes, I asked if he had done the writing and he shared that he had and that staff had taken pictures of him doing it for me. I congratulated Eric and shared with him how impressed I was with his determination and hard work. We spoke more about his plans for the future, doing more articles together, and being the first person supported to be featured in the POMs Department’s upcoming “Show Us Your POMs” initiative.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Meetings were held monthly, except for December and a summer break, consistent with the Management Plan.

Stanfort Perry, Executive Director Honored Please join us in congratulating Executive Director Stanfort Perry, who was presented with the Executive Excellence Award from the National Conference of Executives (NCE) of The Arc on September 27, 2021. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the NCE and given to Executive Directors/CEOs whose career exemplifies, to the highest degree, fulfillment of the mission, core values, and position statement of The Arc. Stanfort has a 30-year career forwarding The Arc’s mission and values. As a result of his commitment to excellence, AHRC Nassau has successfully assumed oversight of struggling programs and services from other agencies and turned them around. He currently is overseeing the creation of Wheatley Farms and Arts Center. This dynamic, multi-function community center will offer a unique setting for people of all abilities to experience agriculture and horticulture.

Stanfort’s commitment to equity and diversity also is evident in his leadership of many diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, to promote a culture of respect and opportunity across the organization.

Board COMPASS Council Presentation AHRC Nassau’s Board of Directors has continued to meet virtually over the past few months due to COVID-19. On November 15, 2021, Coleen Mackin, a member of the Executive Council and a Nassau County SANYS board representative, joined the meeting virtually to share the Councils’ accomplishments with AHRC Nassau’s Board of Directors. The accomplishments were highlighted in a video which showed pictures of advocates carrying out these accomplishments.

The annual presentation being virtual this year was different but great. Seeing all the events since the beginning of the pandemic reminded us of all we have accomplished during these challenging times and of how strong the Councils and Boards connection remains. The annual presentation continues to provide a vital link between the Board of Directors and the Councils, enabling the Board of Directors to learn of the Councils’ endeavors and share in their goals. Thank you Coleen!

Annual Board of Directors COMPASS Training Do you know what Social Capital is? Well, AHRC Nassau’s Board of Directors knows. The Annual COMPASS Board training was given on November 15, 2021 by Susan Gill Orange, Certified POM Trainer, and Bridget Cariello, Program Administrator/Day Services, who discussed the value of Social Capital in people’s lives and development of such throughout the organization. Thank you to both for this thoughtful and educational program. It included information on the importance of digital equity for all people supported, as well as connections formed through Community Partners. It is hoped, a strong commitment for continuous growth and adaption as a COMPASS agency that has made us strong through the adversity of this past year continues.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS SIBLING GROUP In response to the pandemic, the Sibling Group continued to meet virtually over the past six months. The meetings have been held approximately every two months. Most recently Marianne Barbera, a longtime member, attended to review her advocacy efforts regarding sensitivity when a loved one is hospitalized. Marianne was kind to share the following information: I recently was the guest keynote speaker at Northwell’s December 2021 Empathy in Action Patient Experience Conference to speak about my sister’s experience while she was in the hospital on numerous occasions at the Northwell LIJ Valley Stream location. The primary goal was to provide the hospital staff with our perspectives as individuals with I/DD as well as the family/guardian/ caregiver, so the medical staff can have a deeper understanding of our needs. Additionally, I was asked to participate in a patient testimonial filming so that our experience can be used for Northwell’s internal educational program to help their staff stay connected to a patient’s journey and their own purpose in health care, as well as potentially inform others at national presentations of the breadth and depth of patients Northwell serves, and the numerous roles that can positively impact an experience. This will reach a larger audience and will assist in educating the staff to the needs of individuals and families/caregivers/guardians with I/DD while in their hospital so that they can best understand and meet our needs.

Besides my involvement with Northwell, I am on the board of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices whose focus is to educate others, both families and professionals, about dementia and aging of individuals with I/DD.

The goal of these endeavors is to help the aging individuals with I/DD and to educate their families, legal guardians, and caretakers so they can be as best prepared as possible for what may lie ahead.

Board of Directors Physical Plant Inspections The Board of Directors physical plant inspections continued virtually this past year. A protocol for these virtual visits are utilized and then shared with the Compass department for review and follow-up if needed. These virtual visits have been very successful.

This virtual modified approach for Board Physical Plant Inspections will continue and will be reviewed at the annual Physical Plant Inspection meeting in February 2022.

AHRC Nassau - Councils Executive Council Met Monthly (Except Summer Break and November) A weekly Executive Council Zoom meeting continues to be held every Wednesday at 10:00a.m.

Training was offered on 12/1/2021 on DEI and a new advocacy council relating to this endeavor was announced.

Susan Gill provided training on Social Capital in December.

Our Book of Inspirations was shared with all departments as our holiday gift that keeps giving.

Jim Stock attended the Council meeting on 12/8/2021 to review current staff recruitment and retention efforts.

Executive Director Stanfort Perry joined the Council on November 17, 2021 to answer questions, share information and receive input. It was great to see him and spend time together!

In September, Paul Giordano, AHRC Board President, joined the Council.

In August, Robert Kneitinger, who has written our children's books, joined the council. Diagnosed with Asperger’s, Robert shared his story of success.

We have also had many guests attend to just say hello and experience advocacy in action.

Book of Inspirations The Executive Council is proud to share that the book is here and has been shared. We would like to thank Pam Boyle for being there each week, since the start of the pandemic. We love that we are now able to share with everyone that which Pam gave so freely to us.

AHRC Board President Paul Giordano attended the Executive Council Meeting on September 1, 2021 On September 1, 2021 the Executive Council welcomed back Paul Giordano to the Council meeting. As part of the Compass Management plan, a Board member attends at least one Council meeting a year—Paul attends several. Paul provided those present with an agency update, Board happenings and answered Council member’s many questions. The Council greatly values Paul’s attendance.

AHRC Nassau - Councils Executive Council Hosts Advocates and DSP Virtual Forum Advocates to DSPs, Just Between Us! On August 5, 2021 a DSP forum was held to discuss the Covid-19 Vaccine. Advocates that received the vaccine shared their experience and why it was important to them that their staff be vaccinated.

AHRC Day Hab Council Update In July, the Safe Driving Campaign was reviewed and people were reminded to report any unsafe driving practices. Shark Week was celebrated by showing a virtual shark event which clarified the difference between myth and truth about sharks.

Council members displayed their artistic talents at an Art in the Park Event which was held at Wantagh Park.

People that live in our residences began to return to their programs and it was great reuniting people in the hub sites.

In August, Council members attended a rally at Suffolk JCC where they protested against any more budget cuts and advocated for salary increases for direct care staff.

A disaster relief drive was held for Haiti after it was devastated by a hurricane, and an abundance of much needed items was collected.

A Council member sponsored a blanket and toy drive for a local animal shelter.

In September, Council members enjoyed many virtual events such as ASL and Spanish. They also participated in a craft workshop where they were assisted virtually to a project. Ms. B presented a dance and movement exercise program on Zoom, which was enjoyed by all.

In October, the Council celebrated Spirit Week by wearing predetermined shirts on particular days of the week.

A haunted house contest was held and each hub site created a unique version of a spooky house. Additionally, some hub sites participated in a Halloween parade, displaying their costumes and enjoying a treat.

Another Autumn in the Park event was held at Forest City Community Park. People had the opportunity to display their autumn themed art work.

Breast Cancer Awareness month was acknowledged by people wearing pink on Fridays to honor survivors of breast cancer, those lost to the disease, and to show support for the progress that has been made in fighting breast cancer.

In November, a food drive was held and an abundance of items were collected and distributed to a food pantry. An “I Am Thankful” project was completed where people made posters that stated what they are thankful for. Interested Council members gave their speeches for offices for the Day Hab Council. Elections will be held in the beginning of next year.

Letters of gratitude were written to veterans in honor of Veteran’s Day. They were brought to a VA hospital by a volunteer group. People celebrated World Kindness Day by doing something nice for one of their peers.

In December, people were encouraged to make cards for the troops that are currently overseas. A gingerbread house contest is currently being worked on by various hub sites and preparations for a holiday celebration is in the works.

Advocacy and Councils SANYS Board of Directors Representatives Elections The process of electing new SANYS Board members to represent Nassau and Suffolk Counties began in August with election campaigns then underway. Elyse Olson, Meredith Shear and Cathy Loquercio, three advocates from AHRC Nassau, ran for Nassau County representative. The election process took place starting in November with speeches by all the candidates, and winners were announced in December. Cathy Loquercio was voted in as the new Nassau County SANYS representative. Congratulations Cathy! We are very proud of all the candidates.

SANYS Statewide Conference

by Michelle Rudoff This year’s SANYS Statewide Conference was again virtual. While many people miss travelling to Albany, over 300 advocates connected through Zoom. The conference ran for three days, December 9th -11th. The theme was “Stronger Together”. Highlights this year included the Commissioner's Forum. Advocates had the opportunity to meet and talk with OPWDD’s Acting Commissioner, Kerri Neifeld. Ms. Neifeld is expected to be confirmed by the Senate in early 2022. AHRC Nassau’s employees, Bridget Cariello and Coleen Mackin were presenters at this conference, sharing their experience and knowledge on virtual services. The conference also included a number of attendees from OPWDD (including the current and past Commissioners,) as well as State legislators and officials. Organizers of the conference were pleased to witness such a strong presence of people from AHRC Nassau, and also to provide people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the experience of advocating on a critical level. Their voices will continue to be heard by people who implement change in our system.

DEI Consultant meets with Executive Council On October 13, 2021 the Executive Council enjoyed meeting with Dawn Cooper, DEI Consultant, to learn about and share their DEI thoughts, experiences and desires.

It was so nice to have Dawn join and share her thoughts and visions and to learn more about diversity, equity and inclusion.

We are excited to be a part of the agency actions in this important area.

AHRC Nassau SANYS Statewide Awards and Recognition On December 11, 2021, at the close of the three day SANYS conference, Colleen Tapia received the Steve Holmes Lifetime Achievement Award. The Steve Holmes award is given to a person that has done great work with advocacy for more than twenty years. Michelle Rudoff and Coleen Mackin presented this award. It was also announced that Coleen Mackin was made a permanent Board member for SANYS state-wide Board. Coleen has served this Board as the Nassau County Representative and as the President of the Board. It is obvious that Coleen’s continued presence at SANYS is valued and desired. We at AHRC Nassau agree. Congratulations!

EMPOWERMENT Second Year—Virtual Rights Rally!

The annual Rights Rally was held virtually on 10/20/21. It was a fun, festive, educational and motivational event.

Steve Holmes, previously from SANYS, provided opening remarks and Stanfort Perry, Executive Director, commended the advocates for their continued advocacy during the pandemic The POM Department presented a fun game called “Right or Responsibilities” Then awards were presented. The award for SelfAdvocate of the year was given to Debra Grupp and it was presented by Chris O’Connor. Michelle Rudoff received an Outstanding Achievement award for her leadership and advocacy. Tom Moore announced Rights Ambassadors. The rally ended with songs by Coleen Mackin and Michelle Rudoff. It was wonderful to all be together, celebrating people’s rights and the strength that we all gain from each other and our community.

Calling All Advocates—Rise Up Campaign Many of us know, BJ Stasio the current President of SANYS. However, BJ is also very involved in many projects of his own. He started the "Rise Up" campaign as a self-advocate, not in his role as SANYS President. BJ is very passionate about the staff crisis and has started a campaign for people to share their stories about how the staffing crisis affects them.

The “Rise Up” campaign encourages all advocates to tell their personal stories, particularly as it relates to supports provided by Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and the workforce crisis. The goal is to make clear to Governor Hochul, that due to the lack of investment for years, we are now at a crossroads and need New York State to finally invest in our support services.

The campaign is designed to bring to Governor Kathy Hochul’s attention a workforce crisis that is leaving New Yorkers with disabilities without daily assistance. BJ Stasio decided to start the campaign after sharing his own story about the lack of staff support at a New York State Senate hearing in September. He hopes to receive at least 10,000 letters written by people with disabilities, their families, workers, and community members. He intends to hand them directly to Governor Hochul himself.

“This is your opportunity to make change for yourself and for others. So please use your voice. It doesn’t have to be a long story. It can be a short story, it can be however long you want. Just telling your story, families, DSPs. those who are, those who know people with disabilities, tell the stories, because I want to tell the governor that she needs to work to change this for everybody. Because the system is broken. It’s not working right now. It’s not working for any of us,” Stasio said. Many individuals with disabilities receive assistance from workers such as home health aids or direct support professionals. New York Disability Advocates reports that disability services providers surveyed showed one in four positions vacant in the State, with 93 percent of agencies having a decrease in job applicants. Many attribute this workforce crisis to low wages, which are controlled by Medicaid funding.

EMPOWERMENT 2021 Advocate of the Year Award It was with great pleasure to award Debra Grupp with the 2021 Advocate of the Year for AHRC Nassau. Debra became a driving force during the pandemic, never missing a Council meeting and always advocating for issues people face, especially those policies as they related to Covid-19 and the pandemic. Debra always advocated in a professional manner, expressing gratitude and common sense. She quickly made herself known within the agency and continues to be a positive influence. Congratulations Debra!

2021 Outstanding Achievement Award Congratulations Michelle Rudoff!

On October 19, 2021 Stanfort Perry, AHRC Nassau Executive Director, presented Michelle with the 2021 Outstanding Achievement Award.

Michelle is a strong advocate for herself and others. She sits on three internal Councils at AHRC Nassau and has held many Board positions such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Co-Advisor. She has worked for AHRC Nassau for the past ten years as an Advocate and Trainer. Her work ethic and quality of work are exceptional.

During the past eighteen months, Michelle continued to create pathways that enabled others to achieve personal outcomes despite the pandemic. She did this by immediately connecting with others virtually, assisting and supporting her friends and people that receive services to do the same. She encouraged people to reach out to others to prevent isolation and showed resiliency in her own life when re-entering the community after “sheltering at home”. She trained others on mask wearing, social distancing, handwashing, COVID19, virtual connections, etc. She promoted virtual “Camp Connections”, was the lead in a fundraiser in conjunction with Farmingdale State College, and raised 3,000 pounds of food for people in the community. She continues with this effort and is presently working as a volunteer on addressing food insecurity as it continues to exist in many communities recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

Michelle helps others that cannot speak up for themselves. Michelle is a Rights Ambassador. This means she not only exercises her own rights, she serves as a role model to others and assists them with their rights. After an injury many years ago, Michelle was told she no longer could play basketball. Michelle effectively advocated remaining on the team by pointing out to her team the physical risks taken by athletes every day, particularly in the NBA. She made an appointment with her doctor and received the clearance to play.

Michelle acts as a community liaison and recognizes businesses and people that go above and beyond in helping us achieve and further our mission. Several years ago, Michelle lost both her parents in a short period of time. She was living in a group home at the time. To provide support for her brother, Michelle had advised the agency that she was leaving the residential program and applying for Self-Direction. Michelle’s team, for safety reasons were not in full agreement with this decision, but Michelle remained steadfast and has successfully been living on her own, with her brother for many years now. Michelle independently runs many advocacy ventures at AHRC Nassau such as safe eating, safe driving, befair2irect care, and an empowerment book club. She coordinates and holds fund raisers for those in our community, State, country and overseas.

Supported Decision Making Update In 2016 SDMNY was originally funded for 5 years by the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC).

Although the fifth and final year was “lost” because of the pandemic, DDPC was unable to continue the grant for a sixth year.

Without funding for a “bridge year”, SDMNY would have closed down on March 31 of this year.

SDMNY got incredibly lucky when the value of the work was recognized by the Ford Foundation, and then by The FAR Fund and The Taft Foundation. Together they made it possible for SDMNY to continue through April of 2022. Their generosity and faith in SDMNY means that goals set for the project, include 100 signed SDMAs. It also means SDMNY will still be around to provide information about SDM and SDM facilitation to legislators as they consider the SDMA law that the State Senate passed last session.

OPWDD also contacted SDMNY to see if they would be interested in applying for grant money that they had as a result of Covid relief funds and, of course, they were! SDMNY thought about what might be the most important way to move SDM facilitation forward, and to make it available for everyone in the state who wants it, regardless of ability to pay. The good news is that SDMNY has been funded for three more years!

The model is going to be a little different; Supported Decision Making is a valued alternative to guardianship and offers people a more autonomous, self-determined and inclusive life.

AHRC Nassau has been supporting this initiative for the past 4 plus years and looks forward to being a part of the future initiatives, especially to support legislation that will make SDM a legal alternative to guardianship.

Investments In Direct Support Workforce Coming Soon Wonderful news everyone. The Governor announced in November 2021 a 1.5 billion dollar investment in DSPs. This will be in incentives for vaccination, bonuses and investments in recruitment and retention.

This is a real victory for everyone and something to celebrate. OPWDD is making these needed investments to help immediately address the workforce shortage our service system currently faces. The new investments include: COVID-19 Workforce Performance Incentives Workforce Longevity and Retention Bonuses COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Payments Thank you for your continued advocacy.

DEI Advocacy Ambassadors Council A new Council will begin in 2022 specifically focusing on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). AHRC Nassau was awarded a grant from the DDPC. The members of this Council are known as Advocacy Ambassadors and will be tasked with developing training as it relates to this grant. “DEI Advocacy Ambassadors, Self-Advocates Leading the Way” drives new advocacy pathways across NYS by training and elevating a team of self-advocate leaders. These leaders will serve as DEI Advocacy Ambassadors to educate, expand, train, and mentor other self-advocates along with their families and staff to expand their advocacy to speak up on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the many intersections of diversity and disability.

At AHRC Nassau, we are grounded in person centered philosophy and dedicated to putting people first. The organization’s foresight in embarking on an agency system-wide DEI movement would not be complete without engaging our key stakeholders, the self-advocate leaders whom we support and their community partners Through this initiative, AHRC Nassau will elevate a team of DEI Advocacy Ambassadors who will establish an interest survey and advisory, create “A Self-Advocates Guide to DEI” handbook and an accompanying video with a summary of this important DEI work to share broadly across systems. Self-advocate leads from AHRC Nassau will participate in many facets of the work scope such as taking a DEI interest survey, developing/presenting curriculum, video compilation, and a DEI Guide for SelfAdvocates. Their DEI expertise and self-advocacy leadership will be demonstrated during a forum at the agency’s DEI conference and Family Seminar Series, as well as during COMPASS and Council events. AHRC Nassau is uniquely positioned as a prime candidate to work alongside self-advocate leaders to expand DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) advocacy pathways within our organization and beyond. AHRC Nassau has years of experience delivering quality supports and services to people with developmental and other disabilities. We will use our expertise and vast capacity to elevate the team of DEI Advocacy Ambassadors.

VALUED OUTCOMES "I Love My Job!" Margaret Recognized as NYSID Outstanding Performer Congratulations to Margaret Baylis for being recognized as a William B. Joslin Outstanding Performer representing the employment impact of contracts from the New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID).

Margaret serves as a porter assistant at the Department of Labor in Hicksville and says, “I don’t just like my job. I love my job.” Even with her N95 mask on, Margaret’s beaming smile can be felt in the tremendous pride she feels.

Margaret first began work at the Department of Labor in Hicksville during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. When asked about the prospective job, she didn’t hesitate. Margaret was eager to have more hours and proud of being chosen to work “solo.”

Margaret understood the importance of staying focused while cleaning hightouch surfaces during the pandemic and continues to do so. Now, with more people in the building, Margaret is always friendly and polite, and has learned to knock before entering a room.

Skills learned on the job also include maneuvering a commercial Rubbermaid cart in and out of the small elevator and many doors at the department, as well as the supplies needed for the cart and whom to ask to restock.

At the beginning of Margaret’s career at the Department of Labor, she was escorted to the lower level by a job coach to put the cart away. Now, Margaret independently pushes the correct button on the elevator, returns the cart to its proper location, and meets the job coach on the first floor to leave for the day.

When asked about her dream job, Margaret says, “Exactly what I’m doing.”

Supported by AHRC Nassau Employment Services, Baylis was presented with a $500 check, flowers and lunch from Wheatley Farms for her outstanding service. AHRC Nassau is proud to recognize the men and women making a difference in the workplace and demonstrating the power of a diverse and talented workforce.

Playing Cards by Helene Ramer I had the pleasure of interviewing a gentleman in his AHRC residence for his Personal Outcome Measure (POM). He has had a challenging year. His current day program is no longer open because of COVID and while he is looking for new opportunities to fill his day, he has found himself home a lot more.

I asked him, if he could go anywhere, or do anything, what would he like to do. He said that he enjoys playing cards, but does not always have someone to play with. I asked him if he would like me to play cards with him, after I interviewed his house manager, and he said yes.

After the interview, I went to his room and he was waiting for me with a deck of cards in his hand. We proceeded to the dining room and played Rummy. I had the idea of showing him how to play solitaire so he could play on his own and not have to depend on others. He had never played that before and was getting familiar with how to play.

I thanked him for playing cards with me. I enjoyed myself and hoped that he did too.

After his interview, I got in touch with Jerri Walker, who works with agency volunteers. We are in the process of finding people that would like to play cards with this gentleman. Given the holiday season, it looks like it will happen after the New Year.

What a great way to start 2022! It will be wonderful for him to enjoy playing cards and hopefully make new friends.

VALUED OUTCOMES University of Personal Growth

It was a super fun day at UPG when our very own Karen Wahl joined to perform and teach belly dancing.

Karen has been belly dancing for twelve years. She went to school weekly in NYC and like any sport, she practiced. Karen performs at parties, clubs, restaurants and conventions.

Karen performed for us wearing a hip scarf and wings of ices (like a cape). She also had a silk veil and used finger symbols. She took us to another land.

Karen educated us on the history of belly dancing and countries that practice this tradition, including the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Greece. Men, women, old and young participate in this dance experience. It is wonderful exercise, great music and a lot of fun.

Karen then had everyone stand and stretch to get ready to dance.

When the music started Karen showed us the importance of good posture, snake arms, shoulder movements, hips, and foot placement. Hip circles and shimmies were also done. One fast shimmy was called the choo choo shimmy where we moved around the floor.

Jerri Walker had some belly dancing clothes to share, which really enhanced the experience for people at Carle Place who dressed for the occasion. People from ten other hub sites also joined to enjoy the experience.

Personal Outcome Measures Update Each year the POMS Department interviews a different set of people supported by both AHRC Nassau and Citizens through various services (Residential, Day Program, Supported Employment, Community Habilitation, and Self-Directed Services).

For 2021, 277 interviews were conducted vs. 260 people interviewed in 2020. POMs are typically conducted every two years or as requested, with the exception that people with formal rights restrictions are interviewed annually. Therefore, while it is useful to compare data for 2021 with 2020 to reflect larger trends within the agency (as well as trends influenced by OPWDD), each year’s data represents a different group of people with different wants and needs that can change over time. In 2021, 17 more people receiving services were interviewed using CQL POMS methodology than in 2020. It is noteworthy to mention that the POMS Department continued to interview the people we support even during the pandemic via phone or virtual interview and face to face only when safe to do so.

Data Analysis: In 2021, the outcomes met for people’s rights remained stable. There was a noted 4% increase to supports within this area. This increase is likely due to continued efforts of Compass and our Executive Council, and program teams in reaching out to the people we support to ensure they understand their rights and opportunities, especially during such challenging times. Within the domain of continuity/security the outcomes numbers remained low but stable with an increase of 5% for supports within this area. Also in 2021, there were overall increases in outcomes for people experiencing safety (3.73%) utilizing natural supports (2.2%) and being free from abuse and neglect (2.14%).

In 2021, there was a significant decrease in outcomes and supports within the areas of interaction (-13.6%) social roles (-16.23) and community participation (-31.21%). The data indicates a significant decrease in outcomes and supports within the areas of choosing where they live (-22.76 outcomes and -28.61 supports) and work (outcomes -22.74 and supports -23.96) in both outcomes and supports The outcome for people choosing their own personal goals and services remained consistent during 2021. Thus it is clear that people remain able to meet such outcomes despite supports being significantly impacted by: 1) The worst staffing crisis the Human Services field has ever known. 2) The continued surge of the COVID-19 pandemic 3) Limited face to face community experiences 4) Continued restrictions related to distancing and community outings.

Although there was a decrease in satisfaction of people’s choosing their services from 2020 to 2021, efforts have continued to offer new initiatives and continued to foster practices such as: 1) Creating new activity packets to support increased virtual and blended face to face services 2) Continued facilitation of home options review based on individual request. 3) Review and implementation of the cross17 program person support interest and staff interest survey. All of these initiatives have helped to support people during these challenging times.

VALUED OUTCOMES Staff Recruitment and Retention Efforts By Lauren Batencurt AHRC Nassau’s Talent Acquisition Team (TAT) has overcome several challenges our industry has faced in the last year. From pending vaccine mandates, a “ghosting” rate of 50%, and the status of the labor market amid the COVID-19 pandemic, TAT has been consistently hiring between 20 and 30 new staff per week since the summer of 2021. This level of rapid success has been achieved by implementing structure and improved strategies for TAT. Senior Talent Acquisition Specialists have been paired with Talent Acquisition Coordinators to help facilitate weekly in person and virtual hiring events where job offers are made on the spot.

One of our many strategies for 2021 was heavily investing in online, social media, and print advertising and marketing. Our candidate engagement is influenced by outreach from the Talent Acquisition Coordinators, giveaways for candidates who come on site for our hiring events, and sign-on bonuses. Not only do we offer sign-on bonuses for many positions, but we also offer a $1,000 referral bonus as a retention strategy. We strive for candidate engagement to keep the “ghosting” rate below the average 50%, which is still one of our largest obstacles. An accomplishment the Talent Acquisition Team is most proud of is the implementation of a new applicant tracking system, iCIMS. We live in a fast-paced and technology-driven era where doing paperwork is just too time consuming. iCIMS makes the application process easier for the candidate and for the hiring managers with its easy-to-use design. Candidates simply create a profile on iCIMS and are sent a digital copy of our application packet. iCIMS also offers a texting platform which is most popular with the Gen X and Z candidates. iCIMS allows for job alerts to be set up for passive candidates who may be interested in an opportunity in the future or for a job title that we may not have currently available. Retention efforts for 2022 include, but are not limited to, increasing employment engagement and development efforts, celebrating the completion of 60, 90 and 120-day milestones, and further increasing lines of communication with managers to ensure a positive experience for both new hires and management.

Art In the Park On October 29, art work was displayed and sold at a fall-themed Art Event in beautiful Forest City Community Park in Wantagh, NY. Some people wore a costume and enjoyed the colorful original paintings, craft items, music and more.

House and Family Meetings by Deanna Allen House and Family meetings continue per the Compass Management plan. Holiday gatherings also played a vital role! The holiday season was kicked off with delicious Thanksgiving dinners from our very own Wheatly Farms Catering. Each house enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner with all the fixings as we had a chance to celebrate all that we are thankful for.

This season, we are especially thankful for our dedicated staff who have gone above and beyond to ensure the health and safety of those in our program. We especially would like to give a shout out to the staff at the Hicks Place residence who stepped up to save one of our folks who choked. Esperanta Clerge, Jackie Thompson, Lordlyn Lewis, Sabrina Holmes and Monica Pascutto demonstrated outstanding team work and saved one of our ladies lives; we will be forever grateful.

As the 2021 year comes to an end, we continue to celebrate the holidays with our friends and family. The residential program would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year.

VALUED OUTCOMES More on Staff Retention by Kate Graham AHRC Nassau loves to show our employees how much they are valued and appreciated. The following were the initiatives implemented over the last quarter to show our staff how important they are to the organization: We were excited to have two virtual events held to honor the Employees of the 2nd & 3rd Quarters, recognizing 14 employees for each quarter, across all companies.

The honorees, management teams and invited staff all enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Wheatley Farms Catering. The honorees were also provided a framed certificate and $100 deposited to their account to commemorate the event. Be on the lookout for our nomination form in the coming weeks. Please take the time out of your busy day to distinguish one of your welldeserving colleagues!

Our Diversity Committee held a number of events including a wonderful celebration of Friendsgiving, which included messages of gratitude, a cookbook and cooking demonstrations. A DEI conversation hour was held on 11/11 and included a discussion on creating goals for the new year with DEI in mind. Preparations are underway for the “Celebration of Winter Holidays and Celebrations from Around the World”. Which department will take home the grand prize? Stay tuned…We continue to search for a meaningful way to celebrate Length of Service Milestones, and anxiously await guidance from the Executive team on how to proceed during these extended Covid times.

Holiday bonuses were distributed to all employees, who all deserve our appreciation for doing their best, during these difficult times. Employee Open Forums were held. We are happy to announce that we are in the process of developing a new Staff Recognition Calendar, to ensure that we recognize our devoted staff throughout the year, as well as some fun days, just to smile and enjoy each other. We continue to offer our in-person Defensive Driving Classes; new sessions were recently added on Relias for your convenience. We are excited to share that the HR Division continues to invest in a most important resource—our workforce. As a result, the new position of Human Resource Specialist was created to focus solely on communication, engagement, and retention. These responsibilities are handled by Kate Graham. The family questionnaire is a vital component of AHRC Nassau’s COMPASS Management Plan. The questionnaire is sent to all families to obtain their feedback, assess level of satisfaction and improve services.

The response rate for this year is 29.9% compared with 30.9% in 2020.

There is one program trend for Freeport Supported Employment (13%), Freeport Vocational services (17%) and Community Habilitation (18%); “Is your family member able to connect virtually to services and activities they like?” Freeport Vocational program had two additional trends, “Are you kept informed of your family member's ongoing health (i.e., weight loss, emergencies, test results, illnesses, and consents)? (17%)” and “Are you aware of what to do if you do not agree with a service, recommendation, etc. (if you have a complaint)? (17%)” A trend is defined as a score of 89% or lower. A quality improvement plan is under development for the three programs noted with a trend(s.) No other trends are noted throughout AHRC Nassau. These are outstanding results which reflect the excellent services AHRC Nassau provides. A site by site analysis of the Residential program reveals a potential negative issue at one residence. Board and Administrative notification is complete with Administrative intervention underway.

Each program will also address any family questions, concerns or requests shared on individual “comment sheets” provided with the questionnaires. Follow-up action taken is documented on corrective action tracking sheets. Corrective action forms will be maintained by each site with a copy forwarded to the COMPASS Department. As per the COMPASS Management Plan, these results are provided for Board of Directors review and Agency planning purposes.

VALUED OUTCOMES Family Seminars 2021 Series The 2021 schedule for Family Seminars was developed based on needs. Most recently, on August 5, 2021 a virtual Family Seminar was held on Respectful Interactions; DEI Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for family members. The seminar shared with family members, as stakeholders, our mission and activities related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Michelle Rudoff, QI Trainer, provided the definitions of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Bridget Cariello, Day Hab Administrator, provided family members with the activities and initiatives the DEI committee has accomplished over the past year. Pam Boyle shared with the committee the work she has facilitated with many advocates throughout the agency and the impact those advocates have had. Paloma Contreras recited the poem, “I am Diversity.” It was a very informative seminar and enjoyed by many family members.

In 2022, we will again offer families the opportunity to attend the seminar on Respectful Interactions; DEI as they remain vital in helping us to share this message. A Technology Seminar is also planned based on our DDPC grant, and will be led by Bridget Cariello. The training department will also plan a seminar on Guardianship, Wills, and Trust. A Financial Training series will also begin in February 2022 and run for approximately 8 weeks to educate and expose people to all items that relate to them financially including benefits, budgeting, Representative Payee etc.

On December 2nd Oscar from Mott St. gave the Oceanside Rd hub site 2 yellow-bellied slider turtles. We gave them the names Nathan and Peter, named after Nathan Zaffuto and Peter Finn, the 2 individuals that passed in the beginning of the year. Thank you Oscar for our new friends.

Regulatory Affairs By Eric Rosen Throughout calendar year 2021, the Regulatory Affairs Department completed ninety-five (95) site–based surveys. Site-based surveys were not completed for all of the agency’s sites/programs during this calendar year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the suspension of site-based surveys between January ’21 and April ‘21 (to parallel DQI’s suspension of routine surveys). Those surveys completed included surveys of small IRAs, large IRAs and day habilitation programs. Those sites not reviewed in 2021 will be prioritized for survey in 2022. In addition, Person Centered Reviews were completed for a sample of people supported receiving services from AHRC Nassau.

During surveys completed, exceptional practices observed included respectful/supportive interactions, choices being offered, 21 independence being promoted and the continued satisfaction with services and supports.

VALUED OUTCOMES The COMPASS Committee & The Quality Improvement Process AHRC Nassau and Citizens: 2021 QUALITY ENHANCEMENTS In 2021 the pandemic continued to create challenges for the systematic measurement of quality improvement goals. This included reduced data collection due to OPWDD regulatory pauses in 2021 and the continued need to attend to higher priority health/safety items.

It is clear that AHRC Nassau’s culture of on-going improvement, made it possible to develop and adopt improvements effectively and on a large scale during the pandemic. This culture certainly supported the wealth of new improvements developed, as well as the extensive collaboration across all stakeholders, along with the rapid deployment of new supports/services in response to the pandemic. This is commendable and a tribute to all stakeholders.

The pandemic has forced us to reassess and think creatively about quality in a post-COVID-19 world. Stakeholders’ well-being and emotional support continue to be at the center of all quality efforts. It is evident that many people are now experiencing pandemic burnout and that a sense of exhaustion is on the rise. Thus, as we continue with the pandemic, it appears important to take a moment to reflect back on all that has been accomplished. It is wonderful to see the extraordinary enhancements in people’s lives during these difficult times.

Throughout the pandemic, considerable changes to supports and services have been made. The need to consider which changes have been helpful and should continue, and which routine services/supports do not need to be reinstated, would be beneficial. We look forward to exploring these items during CQL accreditation in 2022.

All FACTORS Everyone rallied to advocate for the right to receive the COVID vaccine. And we did it! Beginning in January 2021, members of the Agencies began to receive the vaccines at the Advantage Care Health Center, and community health organizations, as part of the phase 1A COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan.

Extensive Diversity Equity Inclusion initiatives were initiated this year and included the hosting of a lunch and learn series. Sharing, enlightenment and growth are evident!

Exciting changes are underway at AHRC’s Freeport work center this year. The workshop has begun the transition to a fully integrated business center. The Wheatley Farms and Arts Center corporate banner includes culinary services, commercial cleaning, landscaping and snow removal, greenhouse and nursery, embroidery services, as well as packaging and shipping.

The Board of Directors physical plant inspection process was changed to virtual visits in March 2021 to enhance connections and supports during the pandemic.

RIGHTS The annual individual satisfaction questionnaire was distributed electronically to all participants this year, thereby increasing the ease of completion and reducing paperwork (manual distribution/receipt, tally of results, etc.). A big win for all! It now includes a self-assessment of rights that are important to the person.

Four people signed a Supported Decision Making agreement this year. Congratulations!

New rights training including decision making and COVID safety, were added to the monthly trainings.

A Book of Inspirations was developed that highlights lessons learned from the pandemic that can be used every day.

DIGNITY & RESPECT A Respectful Interactions training was hosted for people and families to support and educate all on the basic human right to be treated with dignity and respect.

AHRC hosted the annual rights rally virtually. It was a wonderful opportunity to share and celebrate rights.

Virtual Family Seminars were offered on various topics.

A Lifetime Achievement was awarded to people achieving a high level of advocacy for ten plus years.

Regular “live” updates on DSP recruitment and retention was provided to people directly from the Agency talent and support team.

NATURAL SUPPORTS Although in-person gatherings were sporadic in 2021, we are grateful that we had more opportunities to be together in person in 2021 and to return to some normal routines to celebrate together and see old friends.

Alternate ways of being together also continued, to support people to maintain relationships with their family and friends. This has included, as needed during the pandemic, virtual visits, parties/celebrations, telephone calls, etc.

Personal outcome measures data (outcome and supports) remained high for people’s connection to natural supports (family, friends, etc.), a wonderful reflection of people’s satisfaction. The data reflects what the entire nation was feeling during NYS pause; however, the Agencies efforts are notable in maintaining and promoting natural supports. In spite of these efforts, there were slight decreases noted in the data related to people feeling connected to natural supports. Now that the restrictions related to the pandemic have been lifted, efforts will continue in this area to educate and provide supports for people to achieve their desired outcomes.

In response to the pandemic, a virtual Sibling Group, as well as virtual Family Meetings, continued to be held this year to promote connections and provide support as well as information for all.

Family and individual satisfaction scores that relate to natural supports demonstrate extremely high levels of satisfaction (90-99% satisfaction). The lowest satisfaction score was 90% with other satisfaction scores 98th percentile.

VALUED OUTCOMES FREEDOM FROM ABUSE, NEGLECT & EXPLOITATION In 2021, the goal to reduce the number of substantiated allegations of neglect by 5% was met by AHRC. The goal for reducing the number of substantiated allegations of neglect by 5% related to not following the IPOP level of supervision, was met for AHRC with the overall number of substantiated allegations decreased by over 40%.

AHRC Agency positive incident reporting trends were also noted this year in a 62% Decrease in Rate of Substantiated Abuse, a 63% Decrease in Rate of Substantiated Neglect, a 47% Decrease in Rate of Substantiated Physical Abuse per 100 People Served, a 54% Decrease in Rate of Substantiated Deliberate Restraint, a 60% Decrease in Rate of Confirmed Mistreatment, a 50% Decrease in Rate of “Conduct” incidents.

BEST POSSIBLE HEALTH An overall decrease in emergency room visits was noted due to the emergence of new telehealth capabilities and the ability to do COVID testing on site during the pandemic.

Systems continued to be modified and implemented to promote the best possible health for people during the pandemic.

SAFE ENVIRONMENTS Physical Plant Board of Directors Inspections resumed in 2021 via phone/virtual visits to support maintenance of sites.

CONTINUITY AND SECURITY In 2021, within AHRC’s and day and residential services Personal Outcome related to choosing personal goals have all increased.

In 2021, data from a cross program interest survey continued to be gathered to capture people's interests, desires, and talents regarding how they wish to spend their time throughout the day to create services that are aligned with their interests.

A staff matching survey was developed to match staff interest with people supported interests to share out in 2022.

The Wheatley Farms and Arts center expanded its services to include hydroponics and gardening education as well as stackable trainings to aid people in learning grooming and animal husbandry as well as maintenance, care for stalls and the overall farm environment.

A grow to give initiative is underway with our partnership with Island Harvest, and varied church and local food pantries.

For AHRC, a rehab is planned to commence in early 2022 to create greater accessibility in several homes, to create open floor plans, widen doorways, and upgrade entrances/exits to accommodate people aging in place. Additionally, there was 1 rehab project completed in 2021 to create 4 additional single bedroom opportunities at a house which will increase privacy.

AHRC and is also in the process of developing new residential opportunities for children. Two homes were opened by AHRC in June 2021. Additionally, the search for houses continues for 24 people to move to smaller homes.

During the pandemic, tablets were given to all homes to ensure that people were able to maintain video contact with family and friends.

STAFF RESOURCES AND SUPPORTS In 2021 at AHRC Nassau, 30% or 488 employees responded, to the Employee Engagement Survey, which reflects a 9% increase in response rate from our last survey.

Based on the Employee Engagement Survey, positive trends are indicative of an 80% or greater satisfaction level. AHRC is excited to share that there are 12 positive trends this year, up from 8 during our last survey We expressed our deepest thanks during Direct Support Professional week. This year, DSP week was celebrated with breakfasts, brunches, food trucks, gift cards, raffles, etc. It also included personal moments of sincere thanks from people supported, families, colleagues and community members.

An annual Employee Appreciation Day was held as a drive through event on October 2021 with over 500 employees in attendance. There was a Halloween theme, with music, dance performances, and gifts for all. It was a festive and fun day.

The agency was thrilled to resume the Employee of the Quarter and Length of Service recognition awards as well as various recognition events such as DSP of the Year, DSP Appreciation week, Hero’s Luncheon, and Caught in the Act events.

Enhanced communication continued to be promoted through increased use of text messaging and robo calls, as well as DSP Focus Groups, semi-annual open forums, enhanced email communication (Constant Contact), HR/EMT program site visits to be scheduled. Resumption of monthly employee newsletter.

Continued enhanced recruitment and retention efforts.

This year a relationship was formed with Minority Millennials. Minority Millennials is a resource specifically dedicated to recruiting people of color for all positions.

This year 81 employees to date have completed the Leadership Training with Nassau Community College.

The on-site Master’s Program offerings through Stony Brook University continued this year with expected completion in 2022.

A new HR Business Partner position for Citizens was created and filled.

An Employee Health Manager position was created and filled. This person oversees all Covid-19 related issues as well as employee health and wellness.

PERSONAL OUTCOME MEASURES A Personal Outcomes Measures (POM) Rally, titled “When your Dreams take Flight” was held in May 2021 to celebrate and support people’s dreams. The POM Department was also thrilled to return to in-person interviews, as desired, in August.

Every holiday season, AHRC Nassau seeks to respond to the needs of people and families in its network. This year, despite the continuing pandemic, issues with the global supply chain and staffing challenges, there remained a deep commitment to making wishedfor and much-needed gifts ready for the holiday season.

Under holiday trees in Brookville and Plainview, AHRC stakeholders selected a paper ornament with a wished-for item and replaced it with a beautifully wrapped gift. St. Luke Preschool and Early Childhood Center in Dix Hills shopped for and wrapped over 100 gifts for BCCS families.

The Greco and Munz families have been longtime, annual leaders of this holiday campaign. In addition to the tree wishes, they have included over a dozen men and women supported in AHRC Nassau’s residential program who struggle during the holidays.

“These men and women remember the holidays shared with their family and unfortunately, their family is now gone,” shared Deanna Allen, Director of AHRC Residential Services. “It is so incredible to feel the love that comes through when these gifts and cards are opened.”

The Knights of Columbus James Norton Council retooled their annual holiday party and instead delivered notes and gifts to AHRC homes in the Glen Cove area. “This season is about giving,” shared Knight Richie Alois.

Volunteers from AHRC Day Services are part of the team, picking ups gifts, sorting them and making sure they are under the right tree for the holiday.

“This was incredibly meaningful this year,” shared staff leader Jerri Walker. “Such an outpouring of generosity and service from our community should give us all hope.”
