NE WS WINTER 2023 VOL. 70 ISSUE 1 Supporting Our Shared Community - AHRC’s Inclusive “Dream Project” Launches at Glen Cove’s Annual MLK Commemorative March and Program - Wheatley Farms & Arts Center Continues to Grow With Community Classes & Volunteer Opportunities - Calling All Advocates: Share Your Perspective With Federal & State Legislators on Disability Funding

à{x Wxá~ Éy à{x VXb

Dear AHRC Families and Friends,

As always, I hope this letter finds you safe and well. The strength of our programs and advocacy always comes back to you – our community. Our engaged network of self-advocates, families, staff and partners makes new opportunities for people with developmental disabilities possible. It also makes our impact resonate far beyond what we might have imagined.

I can’t emphasize enough our collective need to advocate. In the coming weeks, please take the time to use our one-click email advocacy tool to share your support for disability services.Your support matters as legislators at the state and federal levels consider critical investments, from wage enhancements in the direct care workforce to cost of living adjustments to assist providers in offering quality care and services.

We would also welcome seeing you at Wheatley Farms or as part of our inclusive Dream Project assisting neighbors facing food insecurity. As you can see from this magazine, there are many wonderful opportunities to get involved. Your participation, advocacy and volunteerism is critical as we work to advance a shared vision of a world where people of all abilities are valued.

Best regards,

MLK Day of Service for Agency Kicks Off Year-Long Dream Food Project

Proudly marching behind AHRC Nassau’s banner, members of the AHRC community joined neighbors to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 39th Annual City of Glen Cove MLK Commission March and Commemorative Program.

The event is the longest-running, continuous march and program held in honor of Dr. King and his contributions to justice and equality. For members of the AHRC Nassau community, remembering how the civil rights movement advanced disability rights made the event particularly meaningful.

More than 100 marchers walked on the chilly January morning from the First Baptist Church in Glen Cove to the Wunsch Arts Center at Finley Middle School. Along the route, event organizer Sheryl Goodine led the progression with civil rights songs, including “Oh Freedom” and “We Shall Not Be Moved.” Once at the middle school, the celebratory program included remarks from Pamela Panzenbeck, Mayor, City of Glen Cove; Rev. Roger C. Williams, Pastor, First Baptist Church of Glen Cove; Dr. Maria Rianna, Superintendent of Schools, Glen Cove City School District, as well as Matt Hofele, AHRC Nassau community member and self-advocate.

From the podium, Hofele shared the impact of Dr. King on his life and advocated, “My dream is for everyone to be aware that we all have the same rights and deserve to be treated equal and with equal opportunities because nobody is better than anyone else.”

Hofele also encouraged attendees to “think of ways we can honor Dr. King with a commitment to the community and service by volunteering. No one should have to worry about not having enough food for their next meal.”

At the Glen Cove MLK Commission event, attendees were encouraged to bring canned goods as AHRC Nassau kicked off its annual Dream Project. Made possible in part by a grant from The Arc of the United States, this inclusive volunteer initiative is inspired by Dr. King’s dedication to community action and offers opportunities throughout the year to support neighbors facing food insecurity.

As a result of the day of service, two vans of donations were collected and sent to the food pantry, NOSH Delivers, based in Glen Cove.

Join AHRC Nassau’s Dream Project.

To volunteer time or make a donation, please visit ahrc.org/dream.

AHRC Dream Project volunteers from across AHRC’s community, including Purolator International employees and the Giving Tree Family, came together just before Thanksgiving to put together food baskets for more than 40 families. This project continues to affirm our dedication not only to our shared community, but to supporting genuine inclusion for all members of our community, regardless of background or ability.

AHRC Nassau Board of Directors Installed

At the annual Dansant event, the AHRC Nassau Board of Directors reaffirmed their commitment to the organization. Board officers were installed for another year of service, while directors upheld their two-year terms. AHRC was pleased to welcome new board member, Dean Lakis, Esq., and re-connect as an engaged leadership team.

AHRC Nassau Chosen for New York State Credentialing Pilot

We are proud to have been selected by the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) to participate alongside 16 worthy organizations in the New York State Credentialing Pilot 2022/2023.

This program was made possible through a three-year contract between the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and NADSP. This contract resulted in grants to agencies pursuing NADSP certification through the NADSP E-Badge Academy. Chosen agencies were selected through a rigorous request for proposal (RFP) process.

We look forward to continuing to strengthen our direct care workforce and further promoting their successes.

Wheatley Farms Volunteer Spotlight

Delee Smith joined the ranks of the growing Wheatley Farms volunteer crew after reading about our opening in Newsday this past summer. While Smith has a busy full-time work life, she shares her time and passion caring for the sixteen animals currently at Wheatley Farms! Delee took on the activities of feeding, changing out water and maintaining the living environments of the animals, rain or shine, even on the chilliest of weekend days. When asked which animal on the farm is her favorite, Delee smiled. “Well, that’s not really fair,” she said. “Each one is special in their own way.”

Volunteers are the heart of Wheatley Farms. Every Tuesday and Thursday, men and women supported through AHRC Nassau's Day Services provide interactive , informative tours of the farm, clubhouse and greenhouse. The highlight is always introducing the Farm's animal residents.

Caitlin Wilkenshoff “I love meeting and talking with people. I introduce myself, welcome the group, read the rules and then the tour begins.”

Samantha Reuben "I show the visitors around the site, give them some information on how to be safe and then I tell them about the animals and how we care for them each day."

Alex Wiegmann "We were trained on how to present the information on the various animals. We also have a little cheat sheet with the information just in case we may forget something. We were also trained to be polite, and to listen to the questions that visitors may ask so we can answer correctly and of course staff is there to help if we need some assistance.”

Tours are being scheduled for families/care managers who are interested in learning more about enrolling in AHRC Nassau's Day Services and its partnership with Wheatley Farms.

To request a tour or learn more, please complete the form at www.ahrc.org/wheatleyfarms.

AHRC’s Community Gives Back for the Holidays

Making the holiday season merrier for families in need is an important holiday tradition. 2022 was no different, with volunteer teams and initiatives led by Jerri Walker, Volunteer and Project Coordinator, AHRC Nassau, seeking to close the gap created by the ever-increasing costs of living on Long Island and the very real realities of caring for a loved one with a disability.

We’d like to thank the following for their kindness in making wished for and needed gifts possible:

Marie Greco and Tina Munz, along with caring members of the entire Greco-Munz family for stepping into Santa’s boots and making the wishes of five families become a reality on Christmas morning. The families have been adopting the needs of AHRC families for over two decades – always carefully shopping and wrapping each gift with care. “It is wonderful to have my grandson, Michael involved,” shared Marie. “He knows exactly what the kids would love.”

The incredible volunteers at Purolator for coming together and hosting a holiday party for 13 families complete with a visit from Santa and his dancing elves. Purolator employees adopted the needs of the entire family making this a very beautiful and meaningful celebration.

The students of St. Luke’s Preschool & Early Childhood Center in Dix Hills who are learning lessons of compassion and gratitude by adopting the needs of their peers, selecting a wished for gift and making sure it will be opened on Christmas morning. The students were able to adopt 100 wishes this year. You all are our Santa, elves, and reindeers, every year. Thank you!

The EGC Group and its president, Nicole Penn, for adopting the needs of children and adults who struggle during the holiday and who truly benefit from the connection these gifts bring into their lives.

Employees and Community Volunteers for stepping forward to support the annual Giving Tree at AHRC’s three offices in Brookville, Plainview and Freeport supporting dozens of wishes this season.

A Social Enterprise of AHRC Nassau

At Wheatley Farms, we’re about more than the fresh flowers, produce and plants that come out of our greenhouse. We’re about more than the high-quality meals that come out of our kitchen. We’re about making lives better.

From the people who buy our products to the people who prepare them, everyone at Wheatley Farms is part of something truly special. We can’t wait for you to be part of it too.
