What began in the late 19th century as a modest collection of books shared from a private home has grown into one of Arlington Heights’ most enduring institutions. Inspired by the Chautauqua movement, sisters Effie and Lucy Shepard opened their Dunton Avenue home to neighbors in 1894, lending about 150 books and planting the idea that access to knowledge could strengthen a growing community then known as Dunton. That grassroots effort evolved into an official public library in 1926, when residents voted to establish the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. From its first location in the People’s State Bank building to later homes on Belmont and Dunton Avenues, each move reflected a community eager to read, learn and grow together.
Over the decades, the library has continually expanded what access means, embracing new formats, technologies and ways of serving people. From early magazines and talking books to computers, digital resources and Wi-Fi, the library evolved alongside its customers. In recent years, the Studio and the Makerplace have extended that legacy through hands-on creativity and experiential learning, while outreach programs and the bookmobile ensure service reaches every corner of the community. The library is also thrilled to debut its new bookmobile in the coming months. As it marks 100 years, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library remains a place where generations connect, discover and continue writing their shared story.
Learn more about the library’s history at the exhibit on the first floor now through the end of August or visit ahml.info/100
