Summer’s Here, Make Your Fines Disappear

Last October, we offered our very first Fine Forgiveness Week as a treat during Halloween. Throughout the week, more than 4,000 library customers contacted us to have their fines waived. It was amazing to discover that almost 400 of our valued customers reached out to us again after not using the library for more than 18 months, and we’re happy to have you back. Your positive feedback and the insightful conversations we had about how your library can support you helped pave the way for our next Fine Forgiveness Week. Many times, we heard that you felt you could not return to the library while owing fines. We appreciate that sometimes unexpected events prevent items from coming back on time. We want you to return to the library to see all we have to offer while still bringing the items back so others can enjoy them, and we don’t want fines to prevent these things from happening. This is why we are pleased to again offer you the chance to make your fines disappear, just in time for summer reading. Our next Fine Forgiveness Week is June 1–8, which coincides with the kickoff for our summer reading programs for all ages. I truly hope each of you will come see us at the main library, at the Reading Room in the Senior Center and on the bookmobile to sign yourself and your family up for the summer reading program and let us make your fines disappear. Visit or call us any time between June 1–8, and we will waive up to $50 in fines from your account. This offer does not cover material replacement or collection charges, so please contact us about what options might be available. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS MEMORIAL LIBRARY
Create a custom display for the community to enjoy
Each month visitors to the Arlington Heights Memorial Library experience a fresh line-up of displays thanks to the creativity and ingenuity of Arlington Heights organizations and residents like Chris Espinoza. Since 2004, Espinoza has created a custom display every year – a mini exhibit of sorts– to educate and share with the community about one of her many interests. “I have a passion for history and poetry, and I noticed certain groups or cultures aren’t always honored,” said Espinoza, a paralegal by profession. “So using my research and writing skills, I decided to promote the positiveness of different groups and cultures.” Espinoza devotes about nine months to prep her displays, allowing time to research, write, gather visuals and finally, to assemble a visual story for passersby to enjoy during its month-long run. Topics have included Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and International Poetry Month. In July, her display honoring African-American astronauts will be featured in the first lobby case near the Dunton Avenue entrance. “The satisfaction is providing other views,” says Espinoza. “Why not pass on knowledge that is positive and can bring joy.” Customers are encouraged to contact the library if they are interested in curating a display of their own. EARTH FROM
SPACE
Marking the 50th anniversary of the first man moon landing, this exhibit showcases 20 satellite images created by Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service. See rare views of natural disasters and man-made ecological effects on the Earth, listen to NASA-produced video and audio materials and enjoy a spacethemed photo op. Earth from Space is a collaboration with geographer and curator Andrew Johnston at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum’s (NASM) Center for Earth and Planetary Studies. The traveling exhibit won a 2007 U.S. Geological Survey communications award for science content. The exhibit presents large color reproductions of images captured by high-tech satellites constantly circling the globe, recording conditions and events that are nearly impossible to document on the planet’s surface. WALL-E, a trash-collecting robot, is left alone on Earth years after humans abandoned the planet. One day WALL-E sees a spaceship deliver EVE, a probe designed to seek out vegetation. Sculpt in 3D using virtual reality
The world of virtual reality offers more than gaming. Just ask Arlington Heights resident John Kurman, an artist and instructor at Harper College, who recently discovered Oculus Medium, the library’s immersive VR tool that lets you sculpt, model, paint and create tangible objects. “This has blown me away,” says Kurman during one of his Studio sessions. “Anyone who is a creative should be using this and the fact that the library has it, you can’t get any more cutting edge than this.” Wearing the Oculus headset, Kurman enters the virtual world and with intuitive head movements and hand gestures begins to create the surrealistic figures that are his trademark. He describes the VR experience as “play-doh that you can pull on and rearrange into all kinds of shapes.” Oculus Medium allows users to flatten objects, smooth edges, swirl, inflate and paint— both spray paint or as if using a brush. Best of all, everything you do, you can easily undo with Oculus Medium. “It’s amazingly easy to use and very intuitive,” says Kurman. “Hollywood artists are using apps like this to create special effects. It’s another tool in the toolbox.” For Kurman, the result has been hundreds of designs, many of which he has turned into molds - prototypes of sort, using the library’s 3D printer. “They could easily be turned into metal or scaled to become larger – a sculpture or some other metal structure,” says Kurman, “But mostly they are funny little creatures that are fun to make and that people enjoy.” Check out where these virtual designs can lead in From Virtual to Real, a display of Kurman’s art and bronze work in Lobby Case Two, near the Dunton Avenue entrance, in July.

One Book,OneVillage 2019
And the Winner is… The votes are in! The winning title from our community vote for this fall’s One Book, One Village is…The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century by Kirk Wallace Johnson. This is the first time we asked you to help us choose ‘the book’ for our annual community read and more than 1,150 people responded! Of the three books on the ballot, which ran from March 18-April 14, The Feather Thief captured about 43% of the vote. Thank you to everyone who voted!

Parking lot resurfacing planned for July The exterior parking lot is scheduled for resurfacing in July. Half of the lot will be resurfaced at a time to minimize impact to our customers. Each side of the lot will take about ten days. Visit ahml.info for updates on this project this summer.
